BIOS CHIP NOT SOCKETED!!!???

ARE THEY CRAZY !! A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO MY BUDDY BOUGHT A 875FIS2R AND IT HAS A SOCKETED BIOS ROM ON AUG 20TH I RECEIVED MY GORGEOUS 875FIS2R.  UPON OPENING THE BOX, THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS WHAT SEEMS TO BE A BIOS CHIP THAT IS PERMANENT.  I'VE ALREADY FLASHED MY BIOS TO VER. 1.6 USING LIVE MONITOR WITHOUT A PROBLEM, THEN I COME TO THESE THREADS AND OH MY GOD ALL THE NIGHTMARES WITH BIOS FLASHING AND THE RESULTING DEAD BOARDS.  YOU WOULD THINK MSI WOULD RATHER HAVE A BUNCH OF CHIPS RMA'D INSTEAD OF WHOLE BOARDS.  I DON'T UNDERSTAND EVERY PICTURE OF THE 865'S AND 875'S (INCLUDING THE MANUAL) HAVE SOCKETED BIOS'?  AM I MISSING SOMETHING??  NEEDLESS TO SAY MY FLASHING DAYS ARE OVER!!  TALK TO ME GUYS AND GALS - WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SOCKET?  MY VIA P4B-400, WHICH I JUST TOOK OUT AND REPLACED WITH THE 875NEO EVEN HAD A SOCKET. ?(

MSI decided to use chip-soldered BIOS chip solution to cut cost, they know that they have to cover the cost of RMA due to wrong BIOS flashing. Which again, appear to be cost-effective solution for high-volume manufacturing. There is something call BIOS recovery procedure.
Nothing more to discuss in this thread, this is a known topic. Hence I close the thread to avoid rants.

  • H-61MU-E35 (B3) 4MB BIOS Chip Vs 8MB BIOS BIN File - WinBond 25Q32BV

    Hello,
I have MSI H-61MU-E35 (B3) motherboard with Ivy Bridge Processor, and everything was working fine,  Using Windows XP, I may have updated BIOS with different model no, so upon booting I was getting message that "BIOS File Not Found..."  In past, I had posted message in forum and got Big help but nothing worked nor message changed...
So, finally I build Rayer's circuit to flash BIOS using SPIPGM Software utility.
Rayer's SPI Circuit and SPIPGM software is working fine. I am also able to write BIOS and retrieving it back and also comparing with what was actually written, and able to compare to make sure, its writing correctly.
BIOS Chip Detected: Winbond 25Q32BV  (4MB)  Datasheet is Attached
I also read Chip number visually, which is matching with what's detected by SPIPGM (Rayer's software)
    Product Page: us.msi.com/support/mb/H61MUE35_B3.html#down-bios
    Issue is:
I have Ivy Bridge Processor and this motherboard supports Ivy Bridge Processor only with BIOS version12.x above.
    (1) All Ivy Bridge Supported BOIS BIN File size is 8 MB  and BIOS Chip size is 4 MB
Question is: How it's possible to write 8MB BIN file with 4MB BIOS Chip ?
There are 4MB size BIN File with older version, but that does not support Ivy Bridge Processor and with Ivy Bridge Processor in the socket, system will not boot to even say something.
Using SPIPGM utility, when I tried to feed 8MB BIN file to BIOS chip, it's complaining me that, File Size does not match with BIOS Size...

    Hello SVet,
THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !!!
I downloaded your BIOS file using SPIPGM into Chip..... AND....
After 6 month later... finally My dead board is live again and booted Windows XP as original....  Amazing....
Agian... THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !!!

  • Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4E) - BIOS chip location

Does anyone know the location of the BIOS chip on this Toshiba or have an image of something similar so I know what I am looking for? I have taken out the motherboard and despite a sticker that says ISKAA V1.20 BIOS, AAB4, U52 I cant find it (assuming U52 refers to the chip number).
Dead laptop after a failed BIOS update so investigating getting another reprogrammed if I can find where the chip is.
I didn't actually want to update the BIOS - I run the Toshiba BIOS util to see what version I had installed (I think every other BIOS util I have used allows you to see this info before doing anything) - the sire lists v5.6 for XP but v2.6 for Vista (haven't heard of different BIOSes for different OS's before. The Toshiba util went straight into programming - no info, no warning.
It's not worth the cost to replace the mobo and environmentally I would prefer to at least try the chip replacement (perhaps if anyone from Toshiba is reading this and they would prefer that environmentally it would be better to try than chuck it away, then they might feel inclined to let me know where it is!)
    Any info gratefully received.
    Cheers
    Rob

Well Paul at Grains sent me a new programmed BIOS next day and it all worked perfectly. Being only 8 pins witha decent soldering iron it wasn't hard, and you don't even have to remove the motherboard as you can get to the PCMCIA mechanism retaining screws via the second hard disk slot.
So to recap if you have killed your BIOS:
You can pay a Toshiba ASP 150+VAT for a new mobo, plus 90+VAT fitting, plus 30 P&P
    or
Get a new BIOS from GRAINS for 14 total inc P&P
He will fit for I think about 50 plus postage, but that is still a lot cheaper and it you are out of warranty a good option.
Hope the info helps someone else.

No one will give you that. You only can download to update the bios you will not get the source code and any bios you download and edit is use at your own risk. And since we have no P/N no one can direct you to the BIOS update your system needs. If HP support didn't give you this information why do you think the HP user are going to have access to that information.

  • Delta-L seems to be killing BIOS chips.

    Long post, but please read.
I had (stiil have) a Delta-L, and it ran fine about a year or so.
After this time, ramdom/massive lockups begun.
After some time it died (in truth the bios chip got corrupted, and SURELY it was corrput, tried everything, even took out batteryfor a day, cleaned the entire mobo).
So i bought a BIOS chip with 5.8 bios version in it.I placed it on the board and it revived. After a day or so it died again.
Then I bought better PSU (its a Seventeam 420, I believe it's good PSU) to run my new mobo AN7.
Now I got a bios chip (49lf020a 2Mbit) and hot-flashed it with 5.8 bios and  Uniflash said the process was
    succesful.
So I put the in Delta-L (now using the new PSU) but it didn't come to life (shows Red-red-green-green or maybe green-green-red-red).
But CPU is perfect as memory is (theyre the same ones I'm using in AN7).
I believe that using bad PSU for about a year may have damaged something in the mobo.
Now why I believe it's killing BIOS chips.
After the Delta_L didn't came to life, I tried to reflash it with AN7, but now UNIFLASH shows red things in the progress bar.Looked like this http://img194.echo.cx/img194/9025/imagem8nr.jpg.
I even tried another brand new chip and it seems to have been killed by the mobo again.
    The question is..
What is probaly damaged in the mobo??? I want at least to try replacing it.
Of course CPU (and heatsink) and memory was placed correctly. And I don't belive it's VGA related since the code taht d-bracket shows is the same even if I take CPU or memory or VGA out, or even take the BIOS chip out.No beeps at all, nor
bootblock trying to access floppy.I tried it outside the case to prevent any shorts.
I believe IT MUST BE something related to BIOS cause the first time it died replacing the chip for a brand new one (with 5.8) revived it, but only for a day (and the first time it died the code in d-bracket was the same as now).

Quote from: Fredrik Åsenius on 15-May-05, 08:00:16
There are no unused stand-offs left behind the mobo, or a wire poorly isolated, pulling power all the time.
Is the memory well in place?
You are not sure, but might this be the lamp post  you got:
    "4 BOTH BOTTOM RED
Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting"
"Now I got a bios chip (49lf020a 2Mbit) and hot-flashed it with 5.8 bios and Uniflash said the process was
succesful. So I put the in Delta-L (now using the new PSU) but it didn't come to life (shows Red-red-green-green or maybe green-green-red-red)."
I'm tired: How did you flash the BIOS chip if it wasn't on the Delta board? What good would that do?
I tried reinsert memo lots of times, but It seems to have nothing  to do with memo, cause no matter if I take out memo, vga, or even CPU, the d-bracket always shows the same code and no beeps at all.
And I hot-flashed the chip with my AN7.Quote from: Glenn on 15-May-05, 08:26:18
Yep, board's probably fried.... Get an RMA
Is it possible for me to RMA it since the store where I bought  only gave 1 year warranty?
How can I test those little (some are about 0.08x0.03inches and some are bigger) components to check if they-re working? At least I would have some clue on how to fix this mobo.

  • Where is the bios chip located in the Equium A210-1C4?

Have replacement bios chip for this model, but not sure where the bios chip is located on the motherboard?
    Any assistance appreciated.

The BIOS chip is soldered onto the mainboard, you just can't replace it. It also needs to be programmed before usage using a special EPROM machine..

If your your thinking of messing with it doesn't matter if you find it you can't reset the password if you don't have the unlock code. And if this is a Business or Elite model that requires you contact HP support to send you a firmware to reset that password.

I'm not quite sure on that MB as I don't have a picture of it but on the boards I have seen it is near the lower left corner. It has an AMI BIOS so look for a chip that has somthing like that printed on i.t

I think it using a new BIOS chip, maybe FLASH chip.

  • PT880 Bios Setting Not Correct After Bios Flash

Hey guys. Flashed bios from 1.1 to beta 1.5 and am now experiencing this problem. I get the message Bios settings not correct. After loading defaults all I get is my monitor going in to "sleep" mode. The only way to get PC to post is to clear the CMOS jumper. I find it odd that my PC booted to Windows fine with 1.1 and now this problem. The reason I flashed to beta is because I have a 2.4a prescott and heard that the beta is more compatible. Any ideas?

After finding that it sucked I uninstalled it. Went into bios and upped my FSB in 5mhz increments. I also loaded optimized defaults first disabling the dynamic OC and the usual settings and changed vcore to 1.425. I still cant get past 3.06, when I try higher, the PC restarts when trying to load windows. Ive tried bumping vcore in increments to 1.5, Northbridge up two notches, AGP at 1.7, RAM at 1.75 all with no luck. I dont want to get too gready but as my temps idle at 40C I feel I have more room to work with. I am going to try and manually enter my mem timings if I can find them and see what happens.
Another thing I've found. When you change the FSB in the bios and it does not boot, wait a while and see what happens. For me about a minute later it finally rebooted and posted but the FSB setting went back to default. You may not have to clear cmos if you wait long enough.
Good point about letting it sit----and then it will finally reboot after about a minute----back to FSB 200---this worked for me a couple of times.
In Bios-----one of the tricks I did was to set the DDR to 466 and 500 and then see how that affected other bios settings----without going ahead and posting.
It showed me that it jumped up my voltages on AGP, VDIMM and Northbridge (and I think soutbridge as well)
Anyway----went back into bios and reset the DDR to 400----1:1----then raised all those voltages---then set my FSB up to about 230.  That was really about the highest I could get with any stability.  And that just doesn't cut it with a 2.4c which I've known to easily overclock to around 3.2 on an 875 or 865 board.
That's why I think a 3.0c is a good chip for this VERY inexpensive board.   At 230 FSB You are doing 3.45 Mghtz which ain't too shappy
Best timings for me were Cas 2.5 4,4,8 and changing the Vlink settings really did nothing that I could tell for performance or stability.
Good Luck----let's us know how it turns out-----John

  • K7T 266 Pro2 - bad flash ,bios chip manufacturer wanted

Hi, i've problem like many others, i've flashed my PRO2 Mother board with bios file of PRO2-A(the picture of PRO2 in msi site is bad, i've cooler on my northbridge and there isn't, but it's my mistake  ) now i want to reprogram it and i need know the name or type you know, of  that bios chip to reflash it with chip programer ,i can't see that name because after i unsticked the ami seal from chip, the text on chip have dissapeared  ,can somebody help me with this? The only which is possible to see is the manufacturer - maybe EON or smthng similarly i'm not sure,i need to know all that is on that chip, thanx for help saculcz

Its probably just a bricked board. I suggest you phone your local PC shops and find out which one has a ISP programmer. That way they can flash the latest, or any BIOS version for that matter, onto the current BIOS chip, ensuite.  Here is an example of such a programmer http://www.xeltek.com/In-System-Programmers/SuperPro-IS01/
Fry's Electronics in the US seems to be quite helpful from what I understand. That is of course if you are from the US.
You can download the latest BIOS from the MSI site and take that along on a USB flash drive, and they will be able to flash it for you, at a fee of course, normally.
Else you can search the web for companies that specialise in sending you ready flashed BIOS chips, which will of course cost money as well and means you have to solder it onto the board.
Alternatively you can send the board to a MSI technical centre and they will also do the job.
You will have to weigh up the costs and time effort and decide.

Yup. That would probably work. I don't know. Not sounding good. Is there a reasonable priced pc shop in your area that has an SPI flash programming device that could flash the chip for you?

  • BIOS Chip TOSHIBA Satellite L305D-S59222

im trying the locate the bios chip on this laptop. can some one help me out.

If you are trying to reset a password or clear a bios that won't do a darn thing and could damage the bios chip.  You need to use the cmos clear pins and for security reasons Toshiba does not disclose their locations to end users.  Only authorized service centers have access to that information.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Broken bios chips

I had two new boards (ms-6330) k7tpro2-a  do the same one as one guy stated on this talk site. all comps working fine for about 2 months and the other about 11 months. I think that msi is hidding a bios chip problem. I make computers for customers and am an isp administrator. I think I will have a hard time on recommending their product.
Has anyone found a solution for this problem? As stated from another writer, board are working fine reboot and dead no post no nothing, forget the power issue all work fine, cpu in other boards work fine.
Two boards both with the exact same problem. Does anyone have a solution cause I can't flash a broken bios chip.
should i buy two new bios chips??? And i hope that these would not be faulty also, signed really discouraged!!!!
