BIOS Flash Update Utility "Failed to Read BIOS"

As the title says.
The computer has been flakey on startup recently, so I want to update the BIOS.
I run the Thinkpad BIOS Flash Update Utility on my Thinkpad Yoga, it returns an error saying "failed to read the BOS".
Can anyone suggest a work around?

I am told that the update burn down the motherboard    looks like a serious update
those who are going to do a bios update should think twice... I have done it a million times before.. never had a problem.
the worst part : I have a 160GB intel ssd that I bought to use with the new w510 is sitting idle on my desk.
ABOVE ALL , I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE WARRENTY SERVICE TO REPLACE THE PARTS AND SEND IT BACK TO ME...
I can't believe that I am going through this.. I am like a handycapped these days.
I ordered this laptop three months ago when it was introduced, by the time I ordered it went out of stock... I had to  wait three whole months to get the laptop. I didn't even use it.

I think the gpu has failed again, if the bios was dead you would get no beeps, it is the bios that generates the hardware failure beeps.
Home brew reflows generally do not last too long or can cause more damage.
The reason the gpu comes loose on most of that vintage was due to 2 problems
    1. Overheating
    2. Poor quality solder used when the gpu and other motherboard components were flowed at the factory.
Reflowing it does not always work because of the quality of the ball solder they used, also you only get one reflow attempt, doing more than one weakens the original solder even more. Most likely the seller reflowed it shortly before selling it to you.
Proper repair is what is called a reball (solder replacement) of the gpu, not may repair facilities have the equipment to performed this, and is usually expensive procedure depending on the motherboard design.

  • BIOS flash update to W510 = dead laptop

    Hi ...
I just did an update to the BIOS flash that is given in the updates section of w510 ( windows utility ) upon sucessful update it asked for restart. Nothing happens just black screen. If I press 'Power ON" then it checks the capslock and some other lights but nothing on the screen, then it restarts itself a coupleof times then the thrid time it just stay on powered... CPU fan is running like crazy.
Brand new laptop... got it yesterday... was installing win7 ultimate and then installed drivers from lenovo site and on BIOS flash update "BOOM"
Is there anything I can do now to make it run again, or do I have to go and give it to the tech support guys ??

  • Can't enter bios afer update. Raid "Cam read disk error"

I've been having really bad performance out of my HP a6863w machine.  I've tried everything to speed it up but no luck.  I finally decided to update the bios to 5.13 on my MSI MS-7548 (Aspen) motherboard.  The bios seemed to flash properly, but when it powered off to reboot, I now get an error message and can't enter the bios using any F keys or ctrl-home combo's.  It appears that the system was changed to RAID but I can't enter the Bios to change it back.  I get the following:
    "RAID option ROM Vesion 3.0.1545.55
    Cam read disk error!"
and then nothing works.  I've tried everything F key, ctrl-home, ctrl-i, pulling the CMOS battery and reset, and nothing work.  The screen right before the RAID screen looks like it is hardware diagnostics but then says:
"Default BIOS settings have been loaded due to BIOS update or checksum issue."
and then something about pressing F10 or allowing the system to boot.  However, F10 does nothing.
    What can I do?

The best way is to use a 98 boot disk with the ramdrive. XP boot disks don't work.
Windows OEM bootdisks load basic tools like format, etc to a ramdrive. Watch the last line it will say "The diagnostic tools were loaded to your drive E:" or similiar.
You will find alll the tools there, you will also copy the BIOS file and the flash utility to the RAMDRIVE and run the flash from that.
Go here http://www.bootdisk.com/ and download the 98SE OEM boot disk.
Get the latest bios and flash utility on another floppy and keep them handy.
Boot with the 98Boot disk created by the utility you downloaded from bootdisk.com.
As mentioned above, the disk will create a RAM drive and name it. If all your drives are NTFS, it will likely be called C:\ but be sure and do a "dir /p" at the prompt to see the contents, if you see files like "ramdrive.exe" and "Format.com" etc. then you know thats the RAMDRIVE.
Remove the 98 floppy and insert the floppy with the BIOS and flash utility and then copy the files to the RAMDRIVE, you can then launch the utility and flash from that point.
I recommend taking notes on your current BIOS settings and then just select "Load Setup Defalts" option to reset all the settings to the original, and set the BIOS to boot from the floppy then save and restart with the 98floppy.
After the flash is successful, imediately re-enter the BIOS and put your settings back the way they were.
If you don't do this, you take the chance of losing options that were disabled prior to the flash, it can carry over to the new flash.

I have just got my Satellite today and was updating the Toshiba drivers and tried to install a new bios update. I ran the program and the laptop restarted and has gone to a blank screen, power light on, and nothing. This was 10 min ago and stills no change. What should I do? It said not to turn it off.

Just to let you all know. I tried to turn the laptop off at the power button and no luck. So I tuck the battery out and unhooked the power to shut it down. Powered up and started in safe mode ok. What is it with flash updating had it brick a router and a net book

  • KT4AV MSI-6712 Dead after BIOS Flash to support XP3000 CPU (Photos)

Hello, I'm a 15-year veteran system administrator and hardware hacker and this is the first time I have ever had what appears to be a truly DEAD mobo killed after a BIOS flash!
Of course I read all the stickies and spent 2 hours research & homework first, before posting here.  I tried everything to revive this mobo.
    Here's what happened:
MSI-6712 KT4AV system with onboard Audio and Ethernet, Athlon 2800+ CPU, 1GB (2 x 512MB PC2700 DDR) RAM.  300W PSU.  It's been running great for years with never an issue.  I just got a Athlon 3000+ CPU I wanted to upgrade, but before I did I decided I had better upgrade the BIOS to support this newer CPU, since the BIOS Version History says the later revisions handle the 3000 CPU.
I upgraded the BIOS from DOS Boot via a Bootable USB and it Verified successfully.  Then I rebooted and it said something like Invalid CMOS settings, so I entered BIOS Setup to view my new BIOS.  I noticed new features like Network Boot ability, so the new BIOS seemed to be a success.  (Note this was a soft-reboot, not a hard power-off reboot).  I set my normal settings and saved to reboot and the system was DEAD from that point on!  No beeps, monitor stays black.  CPU fan does run but that's it.
    Here is what I have:
(This image is larger if you view it directly)
    Things I have tried:
Removing all RAM and vacuuming dust, reseating 1 stick nearest the CPU.  (This shouldnt be necessary since I have not removed the ram or disturbed it, but I tried anyway since D-Bracket LED indicates a Memory error.)
Trying a different brand PC2700 DDR RAM stick.
Removing CMOS battery for 10 minutes.
Jumpering Clear CMOS a dozen times.  Leaving Clear CMOS jumper overnight (desperate!).
Disconnected all devices from mobo, all HDs, even the AGP video card.
Unfortunately, since the mobo fails so early, it never beeps or initializes the keyboard, so safe-mode INS or CTRL-HOME don't work... so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one.
As you can see the BIOS chip is soldered directly to the mobo.... so am I 100% dead here?  Is there anything I can do?
I am 100% positive I did this BIOS update correctly and there is no reason it should have killed the mobo!

UPDATE: Oh boy, it looks like I may have flashed the WRONG BIOS???!?!
Too possible, that's why i ask

I'm not sure what my old bios version was, I couldn't find any way to tell?  The BIOS flash utility did not display my old version anywhere either.
Well you told that you have created BIOS backup before update the BIOS, ==> "so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one."
Can you upload it somewhere to check it?

I now see that I should have instead flashed BIOS v5.4 for KT4AV: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=552
I am shocked at this mistake...  Can such a small discrepency (KT4V-L vs KT4AV) really kill my motherboard?  I saw the KT4V-L and thought it was right because my mobo has Onboard LAN...
    I'm doomed!

  • K9A BIOS Flashing Question.

Ok this is a quick question regarding BIOS flashing,
When flashing the BIOS of the K9A Platinum, I should follow the AMI BIOS Flash Procedure
Instructions NOT the Award BIOS Flash Procedure or Flashing the BIOS for Non-FAT file system instructions, right? (my hdd drives are NTFS formatted).

I downloaded yesterday the Windows Proggie AMI gives for flashing the BIOS ... works like a charm
    nice as well
so 1.6 is hurting VGA performance you got 8800 GTX with lower scores when using 1.6 and just fine scores with 1.5.
crackedd got the same result, but with x1950 VGA.(https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=109699.msg814859#msg814859)

  • BIOS flash results inconsistencies

I will be the first to admit that I don't know what the heck I'm talking about
Just looking for comments on this phenomenon.
But I noticed many people's results from BIOS flashing are inconsistent for the same BIOS version.  If two people flash to the same BIOS, one may run flawlessly and the other one's goes berserk.
Could it be that different people use different options when flashing?  See this thread:
Winflash help with BETA BIOS, thanks.
Not everyone uses winflash but even dos flash has command line options.  Some people think only bootblock needs to be flashed whereas others think everything should be flashed.  Won't different degrees of flashing give different results?
I know this isn't the only reason.  Everyone has different hardware, which is probably the main reason why one BIOS doesn't work the same for everyone.  But I also wonder how consistent the results would be if everyone used the same BIOS flash options?
Am I in left field here?  feel free to educate me or pontificate further.

HERE is the download link for Version 2.0.  However, chances are very high that you will NOT be allowed to install an earlier version.  If it were me, I would keep it as is and just don't try to use Fast Boot.  Fast Boot is not all it's cracked up to be,  loads very little faster and causes other problems at times.

It fails to start the flashing process, with the error popup: "BIOS directory cannot be found. • BIOS Update Bootable or Update Utility

    Hi,
I am in the process of installing all updates on my new W520.  Regarding the BIOS, I noticed there are two options as following:
BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 7
BIOS Update Utility for Windows 7
Is it preferable to use one over the other?  What is the reason why Lenovo offers this choice?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I can tell you that with previous models the bios update utility wouldn't run under a 64bit windows version so their solution was a bootable dos type disc that would do the flash, however I don't (personally) think it was designed well. The bootable disc will do the job just fine assuming there are no problems with the computer, but I had it destroy a computer because I hadn't realized that a used computer I picked up had a failing optical drive, so a few simple read errors on the disc and it flashed garbled data onto my bios chip and there is no easy way to recover.
Since your unit is new and in top condition, it shouldn't matter, and even if the bios flash did ruin your system board, it would be fixed under warranty, but if I was designing the bootable disc I would have it pause with a "do not continue if your system appears unstable", instead of having it continue no matter what state the system is in.
The update utility is my method of choice now, but keep in mind that you do need a stable operating system. a random bluescreen crash in the middle of a flash and you could end up with an unusable system.
