  • Help Please - X200 will not boot after Bios Upgrade - keeps asking for power on password

    Hi there,
I am new to this forum and please let me say a big Thank You for your help in advance.
I am using a lenovo thinkpad x200 running windows vista with service pack 1.
The laptop has always been running fine and has never given me any issues. Unfortunately, all this came to an end yesterday when I ran the system assistant which did a round of updates and it prompted me to reflash my bios.
I did what was instructed and closed all open applications and after the laptop restarted, there was a noise from the harddisk (the sound was basically like what happens if the harddisk suddenly loses power). Then, all i got was a black screen, no harddisk acitvity with only the power cable LED and another LED (with the shape of a N tiled at 20 degrees) on.
I searched the forum and did what was suggested in this entry: http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Blank-screen-after-Bios-Upgrade-on-X200/ta-p/29...
This is what I did so far"
I turned off the power, took out the backup battery and waited for about 30 minutes (repeated this step several times, also removing the harddisk) but to no avail.
I removed the RAM and tried booting and there was that characteristic beeping sound.
I replaced the RAM, redid the CMOS clearing, and now there is the Lenovo startup screen. However, there would be an error code 0271 (no date time) and 0251 (something about default configuration). Then, these disappear and all I am left with is the Bios Power On password prompt. Somehow no matter what I type nothing can be input into the field (and I did not create any password as far as I can remember).
I redid the clearing for the power on password by removing the backup battery as suggested at the bottom of this page http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=migr-59377   but it is no use. Each time I restart, even if I press the blue Think Vantage button or F1 or F11, I still get the same 0271 and 0251 error messages and am left with the power on password prompt.
I am really desperate as I really like my lenovo x200 and there is important data on the laptop. I would appreciate any suggestions on how I can solve this. Its amazing how a simple update can turn into such a disaster. Now i know i should never upgrade or update my Bios (or at least proceed with extreme caution).
Anyone can provide some help to get my laptop workin again?
    Thank you very much,
    Mark

  • BIOS password (power-on password) replacement by fingerprint on x61s

Hello, just bought x61s (type 7669) and want to know whether (and how) I can set fingerprint login for power-on password.
    Thanks
On Lenovo web I found only "BIOS password (also known as power-on password) replacement is currently available on select ThinkPad notebook systems"  which is not really helpful for me

    1. set the power-on password within bios (save and reboot)
    2. go to "ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software"->fingerprints->register fingerprints->power-on password
and add a new fingerprint (click on empty field above windows password)
    3. check "ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software"->security with power-on->

  • BIOS UPGRADE - HOW TO DISABLE POWER-ON PASSWORD

I have a message to download and install a BIOS upgrade. The instructions were:
Do not power off while the BIOS is being updated.
The AC-Adapter must be used during the update process.
     Power-on passwords must be disabled.
      My questions are:
    1) Is this the password that I use to logon to the laptop?;
    2) How do I disable this Power-on password?

How do I disable this Power-on password?
Don't confuse this with the Windows password. The "user password" is described on p. 113 of your User's Guide. If you don't know about it, then you haven't set one.

  • Fingerprint instead of power on password not working any more

    Hi,
my current configuration is T530i model 2392.
I recently updated BIOS to version 2.52 from 12. Feb. 2013 and of course some other software especially solid state drive firmware Version FWSS28 from 14. Feb 2013.
In BIOS Predesktop Authentication is enabled in addition with harddisk password and power on password.
    Now to my problem:
before updating I software I could start with only swiping my finger over fingerprint sensor, without providing any kinde of password for harddisk or power on password. I received information about success & windows 7 (64 bit) was booting.
Now I need to provide power on password all the time, seems that fingerprint or BIOS now has a bug ?!
    I did several things like:
disabling every password request in BIOS rebooting...
disabling deleting fingerprints on laptop and rebooting...
unchecked all necessary settings in fingerprint security software like SSO, power-on-password, fingerprint sensor should replace power on / hard disk password..... reboooting...
    - then enabled everything again which I unchecked before.... rebooting....
Nothing has worked so far, so there it seems to be a bug in predesktop authentication...
Could you please advice or provide a fix ?
    Rgds

    - resetted fingerprint with bios too
    - loaded bios setup default (cause it was a BIOS update)
    - shut down computer
    - startup again and set everything in BIOS which is needed and has been disabled before
    - did the same in windows (enabled everything again)
    - rebootet.... prayed... computer prompts with "fingerprint matched" ==> first YEAH

  • T61 Power On Password ... can`t reset it

I used to have 2 passwords, one on the hard drive and one for the Power On. But I was never asked about them, every time using the fingerprint. Yesteday I have just re-installed the Windows. I shutted down the laptop and when I need it opened I found that I need to put my passwords. I couldn`t remember the Power On Password.
I searched on the net and found this link
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-59377
    Turn off the computer.
    Remove the battery pack.
    Remove the backup battery.
Turn on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The POP has been removed.
Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack.
I did exactly what they say for reseting the Power On Password. Or maybe I might missunderstand the POST meaning. I thought this means the Icon where I am asked about the Power On Password. Am I right? If not, what does "POST ends" means? Because I am sure that this message for the password won`t dissapear.
Please let me know what should I do in this case.

I'm really sorry,   but we are dealing with the supervisor password, the most secure password on a ThinkPad. The pictures on the site you linked to are unfortunately a little outdated.
You will need to remember this password and delete it in BIOS. The forum rules forbid discussion on this subject. Discussion of the POP, (Power On Password), is permitted as this is openly published for all to see. e.g. the site you linked to.
You may be able to get some assistance from support if you call them.
Unfortunately, in accordance with the rules, I am locking this thread.
I wish you luck and hope you can resolve this.
    Regards

  • Power on password for compaq 6910p

How do I find out what the power on password is for a Compaq 6910p
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
Here is the service manual for the 6910p.
    http://bizsupport2.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01566975/c01566975.pdf
You will find the information you need to clear the power on password in chapter 4, page 38.
Wait 30 minutes before re-connecting the CMOS battery, not 5. You may even want to leave it unplugged along with the main battery and start the notebook only with the A/C adapter with BOTH batteries disconnected. But at a minimum you must leave the main battery disconnected, and start only with the A/C adapter attached.
If that procedure does not clear the power on password, your predecessor enabled stringent security in the BIOS, and it will be your chance to get a new notebook for your new position, as the one you currently have will need a new motherboard in order to be of use again.

  • Power-on password problem

i have a hp mini 2140 and I took the cmos battery out, disconnected power and battery, let it sit for 2 hours, pressed power on switch maybe to discharge any power left in the system. Plugged ac power in (cmos bat not connected) powered up and I still get the power on password with pic for a key, you make three entries and then you get the big asterick symbol, no code, and then you cannot do anything else until you power it off and then when you power back on and your back to the power on password request. I then replaced the TPM module with another one from a system with no power on password requirment. No luck.

    Hi,
Unfortunately,  business machines have more stringent security than consumer models - they don't produce 'halt codes', the password cannot be derived from the Serial No. and the code is stored in non-volatile memory so removing the RTC cell will not reset the password in this case.
If you Contact HP Business support they should be able to send you a customised SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password - the only other method that will work on these machines is to replace the bios chip - an example of what you require can be see on the following link.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Mini-5103-5102-5101-2140-311-200-210-110-Programmed-Bios-Chip-No-Password...

  • HP 15g000 (15gt) laptop administrator/power on password needed. Error code after 3 tries= 88816924

Hi:  My friend bought a laptop and after a couple of months it immediately asks for the Administrator password or Power On password.  They bought it from "fingerhut" who says they will do nothing.  They have not even completed paying for it yet.I have removed all batteries, even the one supplying the CMOS.  It then says it will reset the CMOS to default, but it then still is asking for the password. Is there a password or utility to fix this? thanks.

Hi: Please read this post which should resolve your dilemma. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/System-Hal... Then... You can: 1. Use the unlock code you generated to enter the BIOS
    2. Disable all passwords that are enabled in the BIOS's security menu.
    3. If asked for current password - type the unlock code
    4. For new password, just press ENTER key
    5. Repeat the same for verify password column.

  • Set up a power-on password

I would like to set up a power-on password - very common in Windows set in BIOS. I am aware how to set up a password to login in the Leopard OS but cannot find where to set the power-on password. Can someone give me guidance to do so. Thanks!

The best you can do is set a firmware password in conjunction with disabling auto-login.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
Setting a firmware password will require a password to boot the machine from any volume other than the preset boot volume. Since that volume is set to ask for a user password once it's booted, you get the same effect, without the overhead of having to enter two passwords to boot the machine normally.

  • T420 ignores letters' cases in power-on password

    Hi!
just noticed that when I start my laptop with power-on password it accepts the password regardless of the letters' cases I enter. For instance, if the password is set to 'qwerty' it boots up with 'qwerty', 'QWERTY', 'qWeRtY', 'QWErty' and so on. The same goes to HDD password. Is that a bug or a feature?

That's just how it works.  The BIOS passwords actually use the scancodes of the keys that are pressed, and not the ASCII representation.  In this implementation the modifiers (such as SHIFT key) are ignored.
