Bios Settings For MSI K8N Neo4/SLI Platinum MB

Hello all...  Has anyone came up with the best and most stable bios settings for the MSI K8N Neo4/SLI Platinum motherboard yet.  Specifically under the CPU and Memory menus.
If anyone has seen any, please post them. or post a link.
Thanks
DaaDoctor

Well that depends on the installed CPU and memory, doesnt it? So I find that question kinda odd.
One thing though: Dont use Cool n Quiet.

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum / HDD_LED Problem

    Hello,
First off I would like to say that MSI boards rock! I've always been happy with them, in fact this is my fourth MSI board. The board is K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum.
Unfortunately, I'm having a problem with this one. The problem is minor, but it shouldn't happen, at least I don't think. The problem is that even though the hard drive activity wire is properly connected to HDD_LED, it is not working with my SATA drive. No light at all!
I read in newsgroups that there are people with this same problem (although not necessarily with this same board). I haven't found a solution to this yet. So my inquiry here is:
    1. Is there anyone else with this exact board with a SATA drive that can confirm his/her HDD_LED light is also not working with a SATA drive?
    2. Does MSI have a fix/solution for this?
    Thank you.

THere is a positive and negative side on those pins have you tried flipping it over?

  • MSI K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum power requirements

Is it true that it needs a -5v rail on the PSU in order to properly power the onboard SB live?

The 12 volt and 5 volt rail are allowed a 10% tolerence and on very high end PSU they actually go 5%.
    12 volt +/- 10%= 13.2 max and 10.8 min
    12 volt +/- 5%= 12.6 max and 11.4 min.
The biggest mistake you can make is using software to check voltages. Software and BIO (BIO is just software) readings are not accurate.
The only way to see what is really going on is to backprobe your P/S connector or a molex cable while system is booting, running and then under load using a multimeter.
I will include a little thing that I made up a few years ago for someone else, mind that it is a few years old but most of the ratings still hold true and you can adjust it to meet your needs. Like a few others I think that might have memory issues or maybe a driver problem.
    Here it is then:
    A 7200rpm HD draws around 20 watts, this 20 watts includes both the 5v & 12V rail.
HD and CD's generally are figured at 2 Amps per device, let’s brake this down some.
    Spin-up: 12V x 1.3A + 5V x 650mA = 19W
    Read/Write/Idle: 12V x 350mA + 5V x 700mA = 7.75W
    Seek: 12V x 675mA + 5V x 725mA = 12W
Those would be typical for a 7200 rpm IDE drive. As you can see a HD requires more power at start-up then during actual operation. This is why sometimes a PC takes a few tries to start up before it will actually make a successful boot and once it boots to windows all seems well or sometimes a occasional restart, which would indicate a weak/ bad P/S.
Now to find the power used by the CPU you can check either AMD or Intel for the spec sheets on that CPU or you can follow this link that has tons of CPU ratings, CPU specs.
Some more basic mathematics… When a 12-volt circuit is drawing 10 amps, it is consuming 120 WATTS of electrical power. 12 Volts X 10 Amps = 120 WATTS.
    This is the formula: P = E x I
    P - Watt (power)
    E – Voltage (electrical pressure)
    I – Amperage (current flow)
Serial/PS-2 ports draw <35mA and if you have USB ports then they have a maximum of 500mA per port, again only if they are used- no use means no draw.
The PCI slots are allowed 5A of the +5V, 0.5A of the +12V and 7.6A of the 3.3V Max per slot, again that is if the slots are used. So if the serial ports, PS-2 and USB ports are being used you are looking at around 5A draw on the MB, which would be around 20 Watts.
So now we can add things up. (This is just an example of a basic system)
    MB=20W
    CPU= 60W, used as a norm.
    HD=20W
    CDRW=25W
    DVD=20W
    Graphic card=15W / newer GF4 and ATI 9000 and up= 35W
RAM 10 Watts per 128 MB
    Network Card 5 Watts
Average per PCI Card 8 Watts
Total around 200W for this example.
Now this will fall on different rails and that is were things get tricky, because as you see in my above break down of the HD that a HD use's both the 12V & 5V rail. This is why it is important that the 12V rail be at least 18 Amps if you plan on having more then 1 HD and case fans. Then you have the 3.3V & 5V rails that need to be strong too, the 3.3v rail is actually not so important with newer DDR MB and today’s CPU’s as it is mainly supplying the PS-2 ports power as well as some device cards. Most newer MB use the 5v and 12v rails mainly to supply the demands of today’s devices.
Now this 200W is the bare min what is needed for things to run but in the real world you will want to add 50% to the 200W for your min P/S need, this allows room for spikes and heavy demands and a little head room to add hardware in the future.

  • Does k8n neo4/sli platinum support creative 6.1 surround speakers?

I own an MSI k8n neo4/sli platinum mother board with an on-board SB live 24-bit sound chip. I have confirmed that the retail version of the sound blaster live 24-bit pci sound card will support a 6.1 speaker set up (specifically creative labs megaworks 650) with creative labs proprietary plug configuration of having front center, sub, and rear center speakers all on the same (orange) plug. The plug configuration on the back of the k8n neo4/sli platinum is color coded the same as the retail version of the sound blaster live 24-bit sound card. what I need to know is... Does the k8n neo4/sli platinum support a 6.1 surround sound speaker configuration? I can find no documentation in the literature confirming or denying this. FWIW... the creative sound card softwear that came with this motherboard will allow me to configure and test for 6.1 speakers... but I get no sound from my rear center speaker. On testing, the 5.1 speaker configuration works as it should but I am unable to test for 7.1 config as I lack a 7.1 speaker setup. I am using Version 5.12.1.356 of the creative drivers downloaded from the MSI driver support.
    Thanks for your time.

    Update...
Last night I noticed that, in windows sounds and audio devices_advanced speaker settings, there is no 6.1 speaker configuration option. (GO to: control panel \sounds and audio devices \sounds and audio devices properties \ volume \speaker settings advanced \advanced audio properties \speakers \speaker setup pull down menu).
I don't know if this pull down menu is generated by windows XP auto detection or the MSI/Creative drivers and .inf files that are installed for the SB 24-bit chip, but it leads me to believe that this MB does _not_ support 6.1 sound.
Can anyone else confirm that this 6.1 speaker option is present or missing in windows with:
    1) This MB
    2) Windows XP in general
or 3) if it is available to those that have an audigy or 6.1 compatible sound card
    Once again...

    Welcome to the forum DaaDoctor
If you creat a signature (in profile) it will save you having to type your spec's  out each time or us looking for it. Use mine as a template.
What PSU are you using ? Can you list the power output ? (writen on side of psu)
Going from your specs you listed your graphics card is very hungery on power so I would suggest your psu isn't up to the job under load.
Post the spec and we will know for sure.

  • Confused - whats the difference between K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and Diamond??

MSI web page says the Diamond has:
"Silicon Image's SATA RAID supports another 2 SATA II ports. Transfer rate is up to 300MB/s."
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=638
their Platinum page doesn't list the Silicone Image raid as a feature on the Platinum.
I have K8N Neo4/SLI Platinum and it has the Silicone Image raid - I'm using it now.
    Can anyone explain this?
Another question:  for both boards it shows:  "NV RAID (Software) - - RAID function available for ATA133 + SATA HD drives or 2 SATA HD"
How can the Raid fuction work for ATA133 drives since the cables for SATA and PATA are different?   What do the mean Raid for 133?
    Thanks!!!

  • K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and Dual Core

I just received my new MSI K8N Neo4 LSI Platinum motherboard and I am waiting on my new processor AMD Athalon64 dual core 4400+. My questions are:
    1. If the bios on the motherboard is not the latest one will the motherboard boot with the dual core processor. If not what are my options?
    2. If I manage to boot, and all the components are new, assuming I will boot into DOS, can I make a bios update from there or I need to install Windows and then do a bios update?
    3. And what are the bios update procedures for MSI motherboards?
Thanks a lot guys for help

    hi,
In order to use dual core CPU on the MB, update BIOS to the latest version (3.4 and above) before using it. After flashing BIOS, please enter BIOS Load Optimized defaults, Save&exit it, then change CPU to dual core one.
For how to update BIOS, refer to:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/support/bios/note/award.htm
You can use the dual core without updating the Bios. However, your second core won't work until the update. So you can use the cpu without the correct bios version to install windows.

  • NOT Stable overclock on K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum 3.9 MOD + Venice 3000+

Hi, to all the people that make this forum so usefull.
    I´m wondering what i´m doing wrong? ??? ??? ???
    I have a Venice 3000+ E3 on a K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum and 1 Gb OCZ Rev2, TCCD.
    I have overclocked the CPU to 9 x 290 Mhz (2610Mhz) HTT 3X, MEM 1:1 290Mhz 2.5-4-3-10 1T 2.75V.
Memory is ok at this setting on MEMTEST v1.65.
I have tried Every VCORE possible to the CPU and Nforce Chipset and can´t make it stable.
I can work on windows with this settings but some times the computer locks. >:(
If any of you in the forum have a suggestion or recomendation, please Let me Know.
For a list of complete hardware of my rig, look at the signature.
    Thank for all.

I had this exact same problem, same RAM, same MOBO, with an X2 3800+.
For some reason it wouldnt overclock 1:1, and that RAM at wouldnt run at 2.5-x-x-x-1T timings (and i dont think it did 2T stable for too long either). So i was limited to either 2 or 3.
So right now I'm running my X2 at 2.55ghz and my OCZ Platinum 1gb TCCD @ 232(2-3-3-6-1T). Done so by using 183 divider at 255fsb. HTTmulti=3x
Does dual prime 95 for 10-12 hours (havnt tried for longer)
Oh also, for voltage, the RAM has 2.80-2.85, and NF4 gets 1.55-1.60v.

  • MOVED: Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

This topic has been moved to AMD64 nVidia Based board.
Best BIOS setting for MSI K8N Plat + AMD 3000+ Venice + Geil Value RAM

If you want SSE3 support and you do not overclock, Bios 1.4 is the only one officially available (1.41beta is not official).
Try to upgrade to 1.4 and see it for yourself, do the upgrade with floppy in DOS so that you can save your old Bios.
I would rather wait till mid June when a less troublesome new bios is suppose to be availabe for NEO4 MBs.

  • MSI K8N Neo4/SLI SB Live! 24 bit CA 0

    Hello,
I have the MSI K8N Neo4/SLI with SB li've! 24 bit sound card on-board and I want to buy a 5. speaker system with 3 digital input 3(2 optic / coaxial).
The digital optic or the digital coax output from the sound card can make 5. output so i can receive with the 5. system
    The system is a Panasonic SC-HT5 (http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...s&displayTab=S)
    Thank you.

The card cannot create 5., so if the audio you're playing isn't already an encoded 5. (AC3) stream, then the card cannot change that. If you're playing DVDs, they should work fine provided everything is set up correctly (including the DVD software, it should be set to SPDIF/Bypass).

  • How to SET or Configure BIOS to use XFX6200 TC video card for MSI K8N NEO4 Plat.

    Hello Friends,
Can any body help me to the following problem?
I am having XFX 6200 TC Geforce / nvidia Grafix card for my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra board.
The BIOS states PCIE clock speed as 100 Mhz as default.  The setting can be changed upto 145Mhz.
My Video card can be configured upto 350 Mhz.  How to do this and which is the right way to use the display card with optimum setting?
Thanks for all those who reply to this.

    the coolbits link http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
to manually set the clocks on the graphic card, after installing coolbits, just follow the instruction on that page:
    Quote
Unpack the achive (self extracting) and then in the setup directory simply click on the .reg file. To get to these options simply right-click on your desktop and go to 'NVIDIA Analog Display' (Win XP/2003). For Win 2000 and lower you may need to get to the Nvidia Control Panel the old way. Right click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce xxxx
for overclocking just take a look at the overclocking sections of the forum. make sure to read the stickies before you do anything.

You can put a SATA-II card in.
But don't expect miracles, as SATA-II isn't any faster then SATA-I.
Only the busspeed is a bit higher, but the performance is the same.
Drive's are still not fast enough to even load the ATA-100 BUS to it's full potential, but they do get close to that
    Ya..i agree with it.

  • :K8N Neo4 SLI Platinum bios problem

I have a strange problem with this bios, it goes back to default when you shut it down for awhile.
The date goes back to Jan 1 2004 and all settings go to default.
I've changed the battery thinking sure that was the problem, I've heard they've had some problems.
The funny thing is if you shut it down and then restart it it's ok, but if you leave it for awhile it goes
back to default. I flashed to 3.7 bios thought that might do it, but no such luck.
MSI said just get the board or bios serviced, has anyone ever got a new bios chip from MSI?
I'm trying to get this fixed without all the hassle, but it's not looking good.
I like the board everything else has went fine, I guess I could leave it running 24\7's.
When you make changes in the bios all works great, no problems except it won't hold them.

I checked the sticky's (which I should have done to start with) I see there have been a lot of
    problems like this.
Most of the problems have been with the K8N Neo4 Platinum, mine is the sli platinum but the problem
    seems the same.
The bios shows the new energizer I put in at 2.86.
I will try to fix this as it was a refurbished board from Newegg.
I tried the cmos button several times and it made no difference, most of the complaints were having
to change batteries every 2 to weeks.
The new battery I put in didn't last the next morning when I booted it up it was right back to default
and didn't even see the raid setup.
It only takes about 1 minute to reset it but thats a pain in the butt, as I said if you just shut it down
for a little while it saves the bios setting's fine.
I like the board, it overclocks fine if you can keep the settings.
I'm going to take the board out where I can get a good look in the batt. holder and see if I can
see anything that might short the batt.
Thanks for the reply  and any other suggestions
