BIOS & SSD problem on a Gateway laptop

Hey guys, I posted this in the Hard Drive Forum but got no responses.  I'm hoping someone has run into this and has a solution. I have a Gateway NV59c laptop, and on this site I have a compatibility guarantee for the Crucial MX100 500 GB SSD I picked up. I used Acronis to clone the drive, and the cloning went great. However when I remove my current HDD and replace it with the SSD, the computer doesn't even get to the BIOS screen, it just shows the Gateway splash, says hit F2 for Setup, but it won't respond to F2, it shuts off and restarts.  Rinse, repeat. It's like it hits a fault of some kind before the BIOS can load.
I do have a work-around but it's tedious. If I disconnect the SSD I can get to the BIOS. From there I can switch the type of HDD in the BIOS from AHCI to IDE. Then I re-installed the drive. This got me past BIOS, but only once at a time.  I reset it to AHCI and it works. I have to repeat this workaround anytime I reboot the machine because it continues to give me issues on reboot. I've flashed the BIOS to the latest version and updated the SSD firmware.
Any ideas?
 

I have a very similar issue, a Gateway NV55C38U, HDD is still working, but I wanted a fast SSD - so I clones the HDD - that worked - no error messages, and it won't boot up after the clone when I swap the HDD out and put the SDD in.  With similar  games I got it to boot once onto the SSD so I know the copy of windows (7 Home Premium) is good and works) but it won't boot again without playing similar games - and those are not usable for a college daughter who will be using this machine.  I was not able to access the tread you pointed the other person back to.  I have an account, but that must have been a thread just for that person. Any ideas would be appreacited

    The screen behavior you post about here indicates a possible hardware failure that is about to get worse. You can try and update your video card driver , but in the end, it very well might not be curing that line in your screen. I wish I could give you better advice , but since I am not in front of your particular machine its very hard for me to diagnose the problem in a more accurate manner.

    i have a lenovo 3000 N100 0768 AQ1...I don't know which bios it had...i tried to update it...i downloaded bios update utility from

    and extracted it...after that i went to C:/> drive where it was extracted and double clicked a file name ...
    "ADROMLDR.exe"....a window poped up i flashed the bios using a file "DL01108.WPH" in realtek folder...since then i have been faacing problems ...i dont have back up bios ...i formatted my laptop thinking it will get ok......
    my pc still has the problem....if i use keyboard the usb get connected and disconnected frequently...and the audio is having problem too....if i start my pc with headphone plugged in..te speakers of laptop don't work..just the headphones....and if i restart with no headphone plugged in...speakers play but they play even when i plug in the headphone..i.e. both headphone and speakers work at same time........
    please help me.....what should i do???

    Couldnt find any information on the site or the manual about that, Im thinking of ordering an SSD but I dunno if I can put whatever type of SSD in there.
    The 128gb SSDs in sweden are just in my price-range right now and it would be reeeally nice to check out how fast this thing can run... :D.
    My laptop is the i5-2410m-version.
    Reason I wanna upgrade to SSD is obviously because of improved performance but also that I can probably turn the current built-in HDD into an external device maybe? I am setting up my laptop for music production and I just want a fast SSD for windows,software. Other HDDs for recording audio, having projects on them and so forth.
    The HDD in mine is the 500gb/7200RPM one, I hope I can turn it into an external somehow(read that you can somewhere and I assume most drives can be turned into external HDDs???)

    Shouldn't be any problem. You can replace the 2.5" HDD of your notebook with any 2.5" SSD. Be aware that you need to reinstall Windows unless you have a software to clone the current on the SSD.
    With an external USB hdd case you can use the HDD as an external drive. However if you erase the current partitions you will loose the possibility of using the F3 recovery with the HDD reinstalled if the Windows on the SSD gets destroyed by a virus or similar problems.

    I got an ipad 2 today. Already have an ipad 1 and gateway laptop. Have wireless internet with windstream. I have internet connection on ipad 1 and laptop, but can't connect to internet on ipad2. It says i'm connected, but when accessing Safari, it says not connected to internet. Tried unplugging router and resetting already, still not working. Thanks for the help.

    I did try turning off the firewall, and reducing all the security levels to a minimum (under Control Panel>Internet Options). Also, I'm using a direct cable from my m/c to the Airport Extreme. But nothing helps. Due to the usage pattern in my family, using the MacBook for configuring the network is not optimal, hence my struggle to do it on my Windows desktop. But if that is the only way to go I suppose I'll have to.
    Subsequent to posting my query, I discovered that Apple had not singled me out, and many others with a Win OS face this problem, too. I would have thought Apple would do a proper job of testing before putting up the Windows version of Airport Utlity on their site.

    Be sure that the battery is fully charge then try the following:
    Hit the ESC key after power on to bring up the Start up Menu and then select System Diagnostics (F2).  Now run the battery test.
    If the battery is OK then try the below suggestion:
    Go to the Control Panel ----> Power Options and then select the HP Power Manager on the left column.  You can then select one of the power plans and see the effects on battery life.
    Depending on the power plan selected and what applications your are running, you may not get more than one hour on battery.

  • Install Solaris 8 on Gateway Laptop with Windows XP

    I have Gateway laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. Now I want to install Solaris 8 without removing the Windows XP. I wanted to use dual boot option. Can any body advice me if there is any whit paper on this subject(with step by step insturctions). I have partition magic but it can only partition and format to NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and Ext2 (linux only).

    It can be done but the biggest stump is the network interface. I've an Acer 350 series with a built-in NIC. I also use XFree86 because the Xsun doesn't recognize the video card. The biggest problem in getting Solaris x86 working is getting the network interface to work, since the PCMCIA support is horrible. You need to be sure the the components on your laptop conform to the HCL. As for X, just use XFree86.

    Help!! I have a Gateway laptop M685-E. The computer doesn't recognize the dvd/cd drive. When looking at the device manager there's a small yellow exclamation mark on the drive. This happened

    The yellow exclamation point means quite a few things. First of all the drivers could have got lost in another installation process. Second of all, there could be some kind of hardware conflict with another newly installed driver thats really slowing things down.

  • 3000 N100 0689-A42 BIOS update problem

    I bought this laptop one years ago and it came with 63ET62WW, V1.08 BIOS. After then, I haven't updated any BIOS.
    But today, I go to the website  BIOS Update Utility - 3000 C200, N100   and download the 63af07us V3.11 BIOS (DL01108A.WPH). I run th AdRomLdr.exe as a administrator under Vista Basic. Then a Phoenix WinPhlash windows pops up. Next, I flash the bios without battery  and external USB device. After all, it says the BIOS succeed to update and shut down Windows automatically.
    The problem is: when the laptop reboot, it still shows the V1.08 BIOS, not the V3.11 BIOS.
    1. Does it mean the BIOS update is fail?
    2. What should I do in order to update my bios sucessfully.

    Hi Joseph, I don't know whether my guidance is still relevant for you and others after all this time but anyways, here goes. the version v3.11 is the version number for the bios utility file 63af07us and not for the actual bios that is going to be installed. as the bios image file in version 3.11 is DL01108A.WPH, the version number for the bios is also 1.08. even the latest utilisty version 3.12, file 63AF08US, which is only meant for XP loaded models has the same bios version 1.08 (actually meant for vista models) being installed on XP loaded lenovo n100 models. As I have XP on my N100, I can't even get the dam 3.12 utility to install the XP bios like it is supposed to.
    So rest assured that you laptop has the latest verion of the bios, i.e. the version 63ET62WW, V1.08 BIOS

    Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved. Some of these steps are only possible if you have control over the wireless router.
    Step 1
    Turn Wi-Fi off and back on.
    Step 2
    Restart the router and the computer. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 3
    Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 4
    Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
    Step 5
    In OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and fix the issues listed in the Summary, if any.
    Step 6
    Back up all data before proceeding.
    Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 7
    You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:

    Potential sources of interference
    Step 8
    Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    Step 9
    Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

Her tech person told her it's equiped to work at home with adding any software, but we get nothing. Something we're supposed to tweak?

    I know you can't help with my Yahoo problem, however, apparently at some time in the past I have went to the Sync and tried to figure it out on both my laptop and my desktop, because I have the long snyc key information. However, when I go to try to sync both computers I never get the box to enter that key on either one. That is my problem. So should I try and get a new sync key and see if that works.
