Bios to unlock cores on k9a2 platinum

Is there any chance of a bios release to unlock the remaining two cores on my phenom x2 550 black edition cpu on a k9a2 platinum motherboard? If not, please explain why.Is it impossible to do,or do they just want us to upgrade to a newer board?Thank you very much.

No you cant unlock it.
The boards that can are using a southbridge SB 710/750 chip based. It s a hardware limitation. This SB 710/750 have a feature called Advanced Clock Calibration which can substitute some CPU internal feature. The unlocking is not guaranteed to work even on such boards.
K9A2 Platinum uses SB 600 ,a rather old southbridge ,designed before ATI was bought by AMD.
You re CPU is fully supported (as it is) by K9A2 Platinum with BIOS version 1.9.

  • Are there any MSI K9A2 Platinum Bios version with better V-core adjust?

    Hi everyone
I wonder if anyone knows if there are some bios version to MSI K9A2 Platinum there they have change the V-core settings. I think it´s very big step between the different V-core setting.
    In my bios (v.1.3) i have this settings at V-core. Auto=1.32v (AMD 5000+ BE) then 1.36, 1.39, 1.44, 1.49, 1.51. etc.
So, if anyone knows if there are som bios version that have better options to the V-core settings i would be grateful

  • The new 3.0 Ghz Phenom II X4 940 quad core processor and the K9a2 Platinum

Okay! So I have been looking at this processor for a bit, AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad Core Processor HDZ940XCGIBOX - 3.00GHz, 6MB Cache, 1800MHz (3600 MT/s) FSB, Deneb, Quad-Core, Retail, Socket AM2+, Unlocked Multiplier, Processor with Fan Link=http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4330959
I have the K9A2 Platinum Motherboard. I have updated the Bios to version 1.6. Now I called MSI and Tiger direct and none of them know if this processor will work with my board. Now I did post a previous thread and every one said I should have come here sooner for answers and that is what I am doing. I looked at Cyberpower PC where they are building this spec with the 3.0 ghz Processor and the K9A2. Now I would like to assume that it will work but with the manufacturer and tiger direct not giving the most accurate information I am worried.
I think it will work just fine but I am double checking before I spend the money.
So guys and gals will my motherboard support this new chip? Does any one have the processor running on the MSI K9A2 Platinum? Bios version 1.6?

  • K9A2 Platinum BIOS - Beating a Dead Horse?

I heard a rumor (posted on the AMD processor forums in one of my posts) that MSI has stopped adding to the K9A2 Platinum (V1 board) BIOS.  They will not be adding a selective disable to the TLB bug, they will not be adding a northbridge multiplier setting.  Any truth to this horrible rumor?  My support request with MSI to add a northbridge multiplier so I can actually get my memory speed up where it is rated was met with the likes of "we probably won't be doing that".  Is BIOS 1.3 going to be the last one?  I don't really WANT to go back to BIOS P.0E just so I can unlock the northbridge multiplier.  It has a bunch of other issues with memory.  This board is priced quite low considering... I wonder if they ended up losing money on it and decided to stop supporting the V1 board?

I would probably consider not being able to turn the TLB errata fix off a problem. Going from the original BIOS (v1.0 I think) to 1.3 lowered my computers performance by about 10%ish. This includes FPS in games and all 3DMark scores.
Now it could be something totally different causing the lowered performance as I do not know when MSI added the "fix". I never run virtualization programs so the fix does only harm in terms of performance.
I did ask MSI about the posibility to disable TLB fix in BIOS and this what they answered:

I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum Motherboard. Bios version 1.8
AMD Phenom II X4 940 3.0 GHZ that I have over clocked to (17.5) 3.4Ghz
However anytime I go over that to say multiplyer set to 18 (3.5 ghz) it still runs but crashes when running high end games. I know I have to go in an adjust voltages. However, in the cell menu I can't access the CPU voltage areas I hit enter but nothing happens. It tells me Grey is defualt, White is stable and red is the obvious not recommended setting, but again I can't access it.  Is there something I need to disable before I mess with the voltages?
I know that doing any of this could fry the chip I have liquid cooling pretty much this idles at 28 deg Celcuis, that is with it over clocked so I know I have som room and know I should only up the vltage slightly. I just need to know how to do it.
I also wanted to adjust the FSB from the current 200 to 270 which I was told is possible with this board and also that is where it should run stable. Again I just need to know how to access these things in the Bios. If its a bios issue I can update to the next one,1.9, but did not see the need to do so. Anyways any help is greatly appreciated. I am familar with overclocking just not with this motherboard. Any user who uses MSI who could offer assitance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • K9a2 platinum motherboard, trouble with mouse/updating bios.

Hello all, I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum mb, using vista 64 bit. I wanted to flash my bios, Pretty sure I have 1.4, wanted to try 1.8, or 1.9. When I go to download center will ask me where I want to download from, I click on U.S nothing happens, even tried the other countries nothing. Up top tab will say blank page and go back to download center. Reason I wanted to try and flash my bios to update it is. I have a USB razer lachesis which I have to unplug and plug back in several several times a day, Im having trouble with it lagging or stuttering. I have tried every driver update new and old and nothing works. I have unchecked enhance pointer precision, I have tried every usb port on my computer. Nothing. I have tried updating my video card, on board sound drivers, mouse drivers nothing. Im at a lost. I have no clue  on what else to try. Do you think updating my bios will work? Thank you all for reading this. Hope it makes sense)

Get another mouse. I bought a Razer Copperhead a few years ago, and had similar troubles on several different boards. I just use cheap generic mice again now, they just work.
    QFT
I just use some leftover kensington notebook mouse (ci25m), even though its small it fits my fingers(not my palm, just my fingers ..because my hand/palm is huge lol) and it just works. The only time I bought a really spendy mouse (creative fatality) I only ever had problems with it.

  • K9A2 Platinum BIOS, are there any hard drive size limitations ?

I have a K9A2 Platinum system with version 1.10 of the AMI BIOS. Recently trying to re-initialize a Linux grub /boot partition which is near the end of my 2 TB hard drive I received the message:
"Error 18: Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS"
I see nothing in the AMI BIOS limiting the number of cylinders on any of my hard disks. Is there some setting in the BIOS I should be changing to fix this problem or is this just a legacy grub limitation ?

  • K9A2 Platinum - ATI4890 - Ocasionaly no Signal on startup, no post bios HELP plz

Hi. I'm having some weird issues, it has only happened tree times in 2 months, no signal is displayed, monitor remains in standby mode. Then I hard reset it, and then every thing works fine. I have a MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard with an AMD Phenom II 940 BE, all powered by a CoolerMaster Silent Pro 600w PSU. I haven't updated my motherboard bios yet, nor the vga bios.
Driver is Catalyst 9.5 for Vista x64, it shows my 4890 like "HD 4800 Series". The card is conected via DVI to a DELL s2409W 24'' lcd.
When it happens it does not show any video signal in my monitor, not even bios info, the monitor remains in STANDBY mode, i don't think drivers can cause that.
The card power supply is connected through two PCI-E 6+2 Pins conectors directly to the PSU.
I haven't updated my motherboard bios, this i could do, i know there are new updates for my motherboard. I have no floppy though, is there any way to update the bios via flash or making a booting CD?
Also, i have 2x OCZ 2gb memory stick running at 1066 in slots 3 and 4, this could be a issue??
Its a weid issue really, i can use the system normaly without problems right now, but this is still making me wonder whats was wrong those 3 times since i couldnt see any errors, cause there was no video.
I hope you can help out here, thank you.

Just came from work, and happened again, no signal, I couldnt hear the windows logon sound, so the bios is not posting.
I'd updated my signature with my system specs.
Also i cheked out my bios version with CPU-Z: V1.5
    Also heres my PSU specs
It should be working fine with the card, it has 40A on the +12v line.
I'm using the 3 and 4 memory slot from the board in dual channel, I'm gonna change it to the 1 and 2, to see what happens...
Lastly, would you guys recomend me to upgrade the bios?

  • BIOS update for K9A2 Platinum V2

Hi. I have old trusty K9A2 Platinum V2 motherboard, and latest BIOS drivers were back in 2007. I wonder if there are newer driver for it, 'cause i have this MBO for some time and it works great.

This was not caused by Windows 10. It's pretty much impossible. You probably just had a hardware failure while installing or something, bad luck.
    Try this maybe? https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/images/TroubleSt/BIOS_FD.pdf

  • K9A2 Platinum & Promise T3 Windows 7 Raid Drivers

    Hello,
I first want to thank everyone for taking the time to read my post. Hopefully together we can make this work. I am currently running Vista 64BIT and purchased a Windows 7 64 BIT to upgrade. I need helping finding a stable driver for the installation.
    Current Specs:
K9A2 Platinum (BIOS 1.0B LATEST VERSION)
    Windows Vista 64BIT
    4GB DDR2 RAM
    Phenom 9500 2.2GHZ Quad Core
2X 250GB Sata hard drives (currently RAID 0) on Sata ports 5&6 Promise T3.
    850WATT Antec Power Supply.
I already have the two 250GB hard drives in Raid 0 on sata ports 5 & 6 (Promise T3) which works perfect in Vista. MSI doesn't have Windows 7 drivers on their website. I did however find that Promise has on their website the FastTrak TX2650 Driver which supports Windows 2008/7 which I believe will work. I believe the model number is promise_PDC42819.
If anyone has any information on this that would be wonderful. I need to know which drivers to load up with Windows 7 when installing.
Thanks again for all the support everyone!

It looks to me that the fastTrak 2650 is for an installed internal card to run a RAID config so I see that as a NO.
You are right, that promise T3 Raid driver is tough to find.
Have you tried contacting MSI tech support?
    http://www.msi.com/service/download/driver-2702.html
This is the only definite RAID I see at MSI's site, the one you found for ports 1-4.
Is One controller better than the other?
    IDK.
If you don't get a reply here, again, contact MSI tech support.
I also, like you, found old threads here that never answered that question.

  • My six year old K9A2 Platinum Mobo (Is it failing?)

Hey All, I'm a long time MSI customer. I've owned at least three MSI mobo's. On my day-to-day rig, I've maintained a K9A2 Platinum. Which, is rather old (6 years). I've attempted to keep it in good working order, but over the past year. I have been encountering a persistent problem with the on-board Sata ports. Sata ports 1-4 have trouble reading my HD, during the boot sequence it fails to read the drive. The AMIBios will not recognize the HD if, I have it connected to port 1. 2-4 it works, however once booted and in windows. The system is unstable. I experience freezes and delays in HD processing. Essentially, I abandoned the on-board Sata ports and bought a HDD Controller, it's a Rosewill Sata II/ATA PCIe card. It runs and works, but lately I have been experiencing disk read errors upon boot, after my PC has been shut-down for 6+ hours. I have to restart, enter bios and "trick" it to boot. Basically just restarting a few times.
I've attempted multiple troubleshooting techniques, ranging from Memory test diagnostics all the way to Hijackthis and looking for any malicious programs on my system. It's clean, I use Nod32 and the HD is defragged and optimized on a weekly basis. I've flashed the BIOS, running the latest version.  Upgraded the CPU from dual-core to quad-core (more so because, I wanted a faster processor). I've pretty much exhausted, what options I can think of to combat the issue. I'm running windows xp pro sp3. I know this mobo is 64bit compatible and windows 7/8 ready. However, I just haven't made the leap yet.
Wondering, if anyone could provide information on how to properly diagnose Sata II port problems. Thank you in advance.
Apologies forgot to include system specs:
Board: MSI K9A2 Platinum AMD 790FX based chipset.
    Bios: Version 1.B0
    VGA:  GeForce 450 GTS 2gig
PSU:   Raidmax ATX 500w (+3.3v +5v +12v) (Stock case PSU)

Thank you again, for the replies. I unhooked the 24pin ATX main power connector, eyeballed the pins and cleaned the caps. I reseated the connector, and I haven't encountered an error yet. However, I'm not convinced and ordering a new PSU. I'm better off with a new one anyway, even though this stock PSU has served me well over the years. I would test, but I don't have another 500w PSU on hand. I do have a digital voltage reader. I'm going to test it. (mostly for science) I was beginning to suspect the PSU, since this has been an on-going issue. You guys, have been much more helpful than the MSI techi-support. The tech immediately assumed it was the HD, in their reply to my concerns. Anyway, long story short. I know it's not the HD. I'll check the bios, voltage reading just for comparison. Thank you once more for the help and advice. :-)
Wanted to reply because I had that board for years and liked it a lot...  Yea, I think you can get it running....!  Upgrading the PSU is solid advice like the other posters have pointed out.  It surely can't hurt *anything*.  (Great thing about the PC is upgrading individual components when it suits you, right?)  Best of luck in getting it running to your satisfaction!
--About tech support in general...one of the most difficult jobs there is in "PC-dom" is long-distance tech support.  Sight unseen, the best technician is still only guessing when he offers suggestions, but the best advice you are likely to get is from people who have long years of experience and who have tackled  and solved many a problem themselves--people like the ones in this forum, as you point out.  The best anyone can do, though, in this situation is offer advice and opinions based on that experience.  As you noticed, people who inhabit a company's "official tech support" are often salaried, scripted employees who can read a problem checklist wonderfully but often have little to no understanding of how the various concepts the checklists cover actually work...  So, yea, often you are better off seeking out a forum for its advice--only going back to the company as a last resort if you've tried everything the people advising you come up with--it's probably time for an RMA at that point (if the product is under warranty) or else purchasing new components (as in your particular case.)  Again, good luck--I loved that board!!!!

  • MSI K9A2 Platinum has weak MOSFETs

Well gang I am on my fourth K9A2 Platinum board.  The first two I got were just plain unstable.  The third one I got and put into my kids computer is very stable.  I bought a replacement for my second one and I have to say with 8GB (4x2gb), 9850BE, SB Fatal1ty, 4x 3870 voltmodded to 1.675V at 985/1210 this board was running every test perfectly.  I was able to get the FSB up to 230 with DDR-920 5-5-4-10-2T and it ran 10 hours stable on Prime95 (4 instances, affinity) with 1920 MB on each instance.
Well I figured without a working northbridge multiplier this was darned good so I started on the CPU.  I bumped the CPU voltage to 1.6V in the BIOS and set the multiplier to 13 for an overclock of 2990MHz.
Started Prime95, came back in a couple hours and the system was OFF.
When I press the power button only a flicker on the mobo LEDs then nothing.
Decided to unplug everything except I forgot to unplug the 4-pin power connector, then I jumpered pins 4 and 6 on the 24-pin power supply.  A MOSFET decided to go up in smoke.
Did I mention I am water cooling everything now?  NB, SB, CPU, VRM, memory, video cards... I checked and the VRM heat transfer pad was secure on and got burnt from the pop.
All I can say is, gang, after working with this motherboard for almost 6 months now and having nothing but trouble I was ***SO*** encouraged to get everything working so stable.  I did not experience a single cold boot loop with this new board either.  Then POP... I'm so upset now... this board can't handle the settings in its own BIOS.
I have a DFI Lanparty I bought with a Promise FTTX4650.  I am going to switch to that now.  It has a digital PWM.  This shouldn't happen there.  I think it does PCIE slots in a x16/x4/x4 configuration though so I am not entirely encouraged and it only has room for 3 of my 4 video cards.  It's either that or suffer with PCIe 1.1 on a Skulltrail and drop $1500 for a CPU.
Well anyway, this board in general has so much potential.  It's too bad MSI just didn't manufacture or support it properly (no northbridge multiplier, no PCIe setting in the BIOS, etc).

At work I just put together a Gigabyte X48 based board and the thing has 14 chokes (the square blocks) labeled R80 while the K9A2 Platinum has just 5 I believe labeled R34 or R45 (I forget, I'm too lazy to go look).  It does appear this board is a bit weak on the VRM side.  I see more MOSFETs on the K9A2 Platinum than on the X48 board I saw, however.  I'm sure everyone will be using a Digital PWM/VRM pretty soon.
Honestly if your board is giving you fits return it to where you bought it and ask for a new one.  It took MSI 3-4 weeks I think to replace one of mine and it looks like the "repaired" it but I have no idea what they actually did to it...  Anyway that's my advice.  The newer ones MFG in 2008 seem to be pretty good.  The Promise SAS chip onboard is incredibly fast at RAID0 and 4 PCIe 2.0 slots at 8x/8x/8x/8x is really, really sweet.  This board is still very unique in the market, I think these two features make it that way.  I would have paid $50 more for the same board, just with higher quality caps/chokes/VRM/etc on it.
Looking forward to the 45nm Phenoms, that's all I can say.  I seem to have topped out at 2950MHz on the Phenom 9850 I have.  I took one core up to 3.3GHz for a while under Prime95 but haven't been able to do it again (BSOD: failed to receive a secondary processor interrupt)...

  • K9A2 Platinum PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, im on BOARD #2, and #3 is on it's way....
ok, I purchased the first board on NewEGG thogether with a Phenom 9950BE, 4GB OCZ 2x2 DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 @2.1v and Saphire ATI HD4850. well the first try was bad, the board would not recognize my 4 WD RAPTORS, the promise controller would not detect them, and the SB600 could only read 2 out of 4 and only if 2 where connnected and not the 4....
well, I send that board back, in the mean time I visited Fry's Electronics and purchased the board again, now this time is working so, so...   I managed to install VISTA64 SP1 with all the patches, etc, and play few games, except i still have problems:  I disabled the promise controller as i need to run 2 ARRAY's of RAID 0 (2 Raptors 740 each, one array for OS and one for GAMES) the problem is that I get random lockups, Blue Screens, etc. also when I choose to restart the computer or send it to SLEEP, as it is shutting down the HD make a weird sound that they never made before and if I restarted the SB600 raid bios would not detect the arrays, i physically have to power down, wait and restart, so the arrays are detected.
also I try to overclock the PC, the Phenom is able to run at 3ghz but it freezes some times immediately but others it would last few hours with gaming in between, i tried several voltages from 1.33v to 1.41v and some times get a BlueScreen that reads a processors error, one core did't respond on expected time... or something like that.
    [bashing removed]
    my spec's are:
AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition B3
    MSI K9A2 platinum 1.5 bios

    4GB OCZ DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 @2.1v Dual CH.(2x2GB)
4x WD RAPTORS WD740 on RAID 0 (two ARRAYS)
    PIONEER DVD-RW DL IDE
    CoolerMaster STACKER case w/2 120mm fans and 1 80mm
Dual PS: CoolerMaster Real 450w PS & Ultra 400w PS

well, the design of the CoolerMaster STACKER case is for two Power supply's working in tandem, it has a connector that turns on both supply's at the same time, so I split the load as follows:   all Motherboard plugs, 3 120mm fans, 1 80mm fan & Pioneer DVD drive; powered by thr CoolerMaster REAL 450w, it list power as follows: PEAK (60S) +3.3v@30A, +5v@35A, +12v1@18A, +12v2@16A, -12v@blank?, [email protected]
    CONTINUOS: +3.3v@20A, +5v@25A, +12v1@12A, +12v2@10A, [email protected], [email protected]
as for the other power supply it powers the following: HD's (as of now 2; 1 WD Raptor and 1 Seagate 7200.9), 1 120mm fan and the ATI HD4850
I don't think Im starving the system of power...
im installing windows vista 64 (yeah, yeah, XP is more stable, but I had an ABIT A8N nforce4SLI, Athlon X2 3800 OC's, 2GB Patriot DDR, 2x Geforce 7800GT OC's on SLI and 4 HD's, and I never had any problems, and I had the CPU running on stock cooler and stock voltage. and I had VISTA 32, and 64 and never since I bought it ever give me problems, i could OC everything from CPU, memory, HT, PCI-e, etc.
why this board is so bad?
this is the current ERROR i have just now:
"A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval..."
    technical info. ***STOP: 0X00000101  (0X0000000000000031, 0X0000000000000000, 0XFFFFF980012C6180, 0X0000000000000001)
I did enable promise controller and used the 2 HD on the ports controlled by it as JOBD each, the RAM is @ 1066mhz, voltage as recomended 2.1v and I did try to OC the processor just to try, since that is the purpose of buying the Black edition 9950 to 15x200 @ 3000mhz 1.41v, everything else is on Auto.
before I get SCHOOLED by other users, yes I do want to OC the proc. I have installed vista 64 w/o OC the proc and it runs ok, but i still had random BSOD here and there...  but since this is proclaimed the best board for OC the Phenom and AMD even pushes the SPIDER plataform and makes it easy to OC.  I also just installed an after market heatsink (CoolerMaster Gemin II w/2 120mm 1200rpm) and the bios reports the CPU @ 29* C

  • K9A2 Platinum - RAM at 800 instead of 1066

Thanks for the help previously, my machine is booting now.  However, I am getting BSoD that say 'MEMORY_MANAGEMENT' at random times when I had the RAM running at 1066 Mhz.  I changed the BIOS multiplier to 1:2 which gives me 800MHz DDR2 speed equivalency and now I am getting no beeps or BSoD.  This is not a huge deal but I just read somewhere that you get a reasonable performance increase with 1066 Mhz compared to 800 Mhz.  Any ideas how I can get the full speed of my RAM?

I need some help here if anyone is able to help me I would appreciate it. I just upgraded to the Phenom II x2 (940) AM+2.  Everything is fine, but at this time I would like to move to PC8500 Ram from PC6400.  I am waiting for my new gskil 4G 1066 RAm.  It is supposed to run at 2.1v with timings of 5-5-5-15.  I am guessing my bios should auto sense the ram, but in the event that it does not I am not clear on what settings I need to change.  I noted that if i change the timings from 1:1 (settings for the 800, and it shows ram to be 800) to something like 1:3 66, it changes the ram to 1066.  Would this be the only setting I need to change, or do I need to change the other auto settings for the CAS etc to 5-5-5-5-15 and I guess which ones, there is a a large list of settings with many letters such as Trs etc.  It also appears that the voltage settings are on auto, but i dont seem to be able to change those even by hitting enter etc.  Sorry to sound so dumb, but I am just not sure here.  Thanks.

  • K9A2 Platinum SB600 RAID & SATA DVD

    Quick question for you.
    I have the K9A2 Platinum (V1) MS-7376 board.
Original setup has 2 drives on SATA ports 1/2 in a RAID 1/Mirror config - plus an additional HDD and DVD-Writer on PATA (Cable Select).
The original DVD-Writer has given it's all, and was removed and "buried with honor".
I'm replacing with a BluRAY SATA.
From what I've read, I can't fire up the PROMISE Controller (Ports 5/6) because that will conflict with the SB600 Raid.
I don't believe I can add the BluRAY to one of the SB600 ports (3/4) because it's expecting to add it to a RAID array....is that correct ??
If that is correct, it would appear that my only option is to backup everything, put the hard drives on the PROMISE controller in RAID (or just use software/OS raid), and set the SB600 to AHCI - and probably reinstall the OS from scratch.
    Comments/confirmation greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately it does not appear to be as simple as plugging it in to one of the existing ports. I've tried both 3 and 4 (since the 2 hard drives are on 1 and 2).
    OS is Vista Ultimate 64.
To make sure there is nothing else is at fault, I updated to BIOS last night to the latest. I also updated drivers. Unfortunately, using the ATI Catalyst Install Manager, I don't see a way to update the SB drivers.
The BIOS recognizes the BD and reports it correctly. In the RAID BIOS it is also visible. VISTA boots successfully, and runs fine (I'm using it while typing this). Completely stable as it always was. Until you put any kind of disk in the BD drive. After it senses the presence of the disk, the system immediately blue screens with a 'driver irql not less or equal' showing the culprit code being in ahcix64s.sys - the SB ahci raid driver.
    PSU = Corsair HX620
    MB = K9A2 Platinum V1 (MS-7376)
CPU = Phenom 9550 Agena AM2+ Quad Core
    Memory = 2 x 2GB OCZ Reaper PC2 8500 (DDR2 Dual Channel Kit)
    2 x Seagate Barracuda 500GB SataII in Raid 1 Mirror on SB600
Vista Ultimate 64 fully up to date with all updates.
I can see the AHCIx64s.sys on the latest driver package is more recent than what's installed, but can't find a way to install it (as described above).
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.
