Bios update problem (memory manager)

I'm trying to install arch on a sony vaio pcv-e203 desktop pc. When ever I enable legacy usb support linux becomes very stubborn and gives a bunch of problems. current version of the bios is 6.0.B, I'm trying to update to 6.0.K to try and fix these problems. I'm getting an error that googling can't seem to fix. It launches the bios flash utility and rom file fine, but then gives an error that it can't flash due to a memory manager being in use.
First I tryed using a windows 98 boot disc instead, which failed with the same error. I read somewhere you can disable himem in config.sys file but the file is blank and i'm not sure what to add. This could be a kernel command to go around this too.
Symptoms with usb legacy support enabled:
vga=773 results in black screen and locks keyboard
locks up at checking if initrd..... (memory failing me, there was more to that line)
disable it seems to work fine, no usb at post or grub until linux boots. within xorg the mouse lags very bad (PS/2 and USB). everything else works and seems upto speed.
thanks in advance if anybody can help.

ok nevermind the above post, I found a utility to make a bootdisk that works from bootdisk.com all my problems went away and am typing this from enlightenment as we speak.

  • Y2P - Installed Energy Manager before the BIOS update: problem?

So, my yellows are still not the best of yellows.
I installed the Energy Manager and then saw that there was a BIOS update that you were supposed to install before EM.  Whoops.
Removed EM, rebooted, and reinstalled, rebooted.  Yellows look a little better, but still a little mustardy.
    Thoughts?

  • N500 Bios Update Problem

Hi, I have just updated my N500 with the 1.03 version of the BIOS, and right after, the computer just won't start, it goes as far as the start display of windows XP and then a bulk memory error makes it re-start. What can I do, or how do I come back to the original BIOS.
    Thanks

Thanks. I will look into Winplash for installing the BIOS update under DOS.
Meanwhile, I have a related question:
Has anybody installed successfully Lenovo's latest BIOS update version 1.07 for the N500 under Win XP ?
The little that its documentation says about ver 1.07 is that "...it corrects for "some problems" and expands functionality..."
I suppose that if they already are at version 1.07 only five months after 1.03 came out, it may well be that one of "the problems" was that earlier versions were indeed misconfiguring the BIOS and causing users to return their N500's for refunds or exchanges. LOL, this could be why I could buy mine 6 weeks ago from the factory refurbished and already equipped with BIOS ver 1.03.

  • MSI z77a GD80 PCI-e running at 8x and Bios update problem

Hi guys, first of all, sorry for my bad English, this is also my first topic, i recently bought a new PC, the spec is:
    i7 3770k @4,3ghz
    Corsair H80
    MSI z77a GD80 bios 1.2
    GTX 680 lightning
    8gb ddr3 1600mhz cas9 G.Skill
    1TB HDD WD Caviar Black
    Asus xonar DX
The problem is, since the first bios, i can't run my PCI-E at 16x, i know when my card is idle the PCI-E goes to 1.1@4x , but when it's in use, it turns to PCI-E 3.0@8x   , I'm also waiting for bios updates to check if it solves my problem, but when i try to download the new version 1.3, the download fails ( I'm trying to download with Live update 5 )m is there somebody that can help me solve this problem pls?
    I've tried until now:
Replace the card into the first PCI-E slot again
    Clear the PCI-E slot
Update to bios 1.1 and 1.2 ( 1.3 is not even downloading )
Set PCI Gen 3 from Auto to disable, and it keeps running with PCI-E 3.0@8x
    Thx for any help !

As per the manual, the VGA must be in the primary slot to run 16X. BIOS setting for graphics 3.0 should be set to Auto.
    Do not use Live Update for BIOS updates. Too many borked boards are the result. Use the forum's USB method;

Just curious. If I installed Add-on card that run at PCI-E 4X on 3rd slot (2nd slot is empty) what's configuration will apply ?

  • KT4 Ultra-B BIOS Update problem

Well, I runned Live Update BIOS and found out that I didn't have the newest version. So i downloaded the newest (1.4), and followed the instruction for the installation. After it was installed, every thing seemed okay. Untill I started the PC, then I got an 'error' message:
    CMOS Settings Wrong
    Press F1 to Run SETUP
Press F2 to load default values and continue
I checked the CMOS Settings, nothing I could find was wrong. So everytime I start the PC I have to press F2, or else it won't start, it will just jump back to that message. This is not so much of a problem, but when I have to use the default values from now on it _IS_ a problem, because default FSB is 100MHz, and I loose alot of CPU. I now have AMD Athlon 1500+ 1,35GHz because of that BIOS update. What I really should have is AMD Athlon 2200+ 1,8GHz.
So anyone that could help me with this problem ??

There is a reason why it did not work.
When you buy a board and put a CPU in it, the board may not detect the CPU correctly,
So if your cpu was a 1470Mhz Athlon and the board detected it as 2.2Ghz what would happen?
The CPU would try to run at 2200Mhz and blow up
So manufacturers such as MSI set the CPU FSB to 100Mhz, must modern CPUs run at 166Mhz so by having it at 100Mhz you prevent the board from overclocking the CPU.
Do you see how that is a safety feature?
Now when you flash a BIOS you clear all your settings and the board gets reset to the safety defaults (100Mhz). This also happens when you clear the CMOS using the jumper, thats why it did not work
I assume someone else originally setup the motherboard and CPU settings for you?

    Hi buddy,
You should check the forum content or with other words, use the forum search firstly before you ask something. Failed BIOS update is not unusual and can happen always. The forum contains already a lot threads about this and the only solution is contacting an ASP. The guys have professional tools to recover it.

  • Thinkpad Yoga BIOS Update Problem after installing Windows 10

Hi all, I've been reading tonnes of threads here trying to solve my problems (which seem to keep getting worse) to no avail. I'm reaching out to anyone that can suggest some help before I end up bricking my yoga by accident or running it over on purpose. I'll give you a timeline of the events. The machine in question is a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 12.5" 20CD-0032USIntel Core i5 4200U 1.60GHz Processor4GB Ram128GB SSDWindows 8.1 64 Bit preloaded (recently upgraded to Windows 10) So the saga begun just a short two days ago. I had some spare time at home and decided to download and install my free upgrade to Windows 10. I backed up all of my important documents etc to OneDrive as I intended on performing a clean install. Said clean install went flawlessly with Windows 10 installing the first time with no issues or errors. Since I had performed a clean install, all my previous apps, including the stock Lenovo apps, had been deleted. I had anticipated this and only really desired to reinstall the app that automatically adjusts the screen orientation when folding the cover back. So in an effort to find this app and any Windows 10 related updates that may be available I went to support.lenovo.com and used the handy Lenovo Bridge app to automatically detect my hardware and suggest relevant updates. While combing through the suggested software I noticed a BIOS update that noted added support for Windows 10. How great, I thought, that Lenovo would have a BIOS update ready so quickly once 10 became ready for mass consumption. I went ahead and downloaded the exe version (not the bootable CD due to the lack of CD drive on the Yoga) and ran the BIOS update. As I ran the update the laptop was plugged in, and no errors were presented, a success message appeared and indicated a reboot was necessary, after a couple seconds the system rebooted itself. Enter nightmare level 1. As soon as the system rebooted, I fired up IE about to look for more updates and......BSOD stating that there was and issue with a driver, after another reboot BSOD again with a completely different file name stating driver file missing or corrupt. Sorry I didn't write any of the file names or errors down. At this point I'm thinking that something is not jiving here between the BIOS and OS. So I tried running repair, and recovery and each time I would end up with a BSOD of some design. It was at this point I made a USB with the Windows 10 x64 ISO from Microsoft in an attempt to run the repair utilities from the USB. Again to no avail. Enter nightmare level 2 After attempting multiple tries at recovering Windows 10 and getting multiple BSOD's through the process I decided to use my Windows 10 USB to simply reformat my hard drive to eliminate any traces of my now apparently corrupt OS and do a fresh install of Windows 10. This appears to have been a significant error on my part. Now I have no OS (BIOS is still intact so at least I think I have a not-bricked motherboard) and everytime I try to boot Windows 10, or 8.1 for that matter, from a brand new USB stick I get constant BSOD's.Sometimes I get as far as the Preparing installation files 22% but am interrupted by a BSOD error at some point. So I am pleading for some help here. To me it seems like the BIOS update was the issue. I was not smart enough to have checked the BIOS version before updating so that I would know what to roll back to safely. What would you all recommend for a rollback and how do I go about doing one with no OS on the machine. I know I'm asking for a tl;dr here but appreciate any advice offered. I really dont want to get to nightmare level 3, which I guess would be a bricked laptop and a bill for a new motherboard or laptop. The BIOS I currently have is GQET45WW (1.25) -Garrett

Thanks for the reply ColonelONeill, It turns out that Lenovo uses an obscure PERL disk image called "eltorito". As such the directions in the link you provided did not work as most common tools (WinZip, 7zip, and WinRAR) cannot extract the image file from an eltorito iso file.  I instead just bucked up for a $50.00 Asus USB CD drive and burned the iso for version 1.25 and 1.24 onto discs. I then disabled the setting in the BIOS that prevents rolling back to a previous version and flashed to 1.24 from the disc. While this appeared to go successfully, as soon as I tried to boot from my Windows 8.1 CD I start receiving BSOD's again during installation. I then used the CD with 1.25 to go back to where I was in case it was simply a bad BIOS update at the time. Most of the BSOD's are driver related (qlfcoei.sys) which I don't understand since there is no OS other than what is on the bootable CD (or USB I've tried both) Is there anyone with a stable install of Win 8.1 x64 or 10 x64 running on a 20CD0032US that can tell me what version of BIOS they are running? My next step is to go back to a version that someone else can verify is working. Thanks again for any help.

    Dokie!!
IMHO if your not having a problem, you don't need to up date the BIOS. That is a very serious procedure and can end in a bricked PC if not done exactly right.

  • R705-P42 BIOS Update Problem

I just bought a R705-P42 from the Microsoft Store.  Immediately upgraded the 5400rpm hard drive to a cloned Seagate Momentus XT 500gb hybrid drive to improve the speed.  So far, working great, with very impressive speeds on startup and with most programs.
Discovered the Toshiba Service Station utility the other day, and tried to update the bios.  With both 1.70 and 1.80 updates, I get the same message:
Error: Preparing to update was failed.
Given image file is not compatible with this computer.
Any ideas on this?  Should I attempt to do the BIOS update via an alternate pathway (outside of Windows 7)?  Do I need to swap back the original hard drive for the update process, then switch back?  I also added some memory, too, but have already tried to go back to the original sticks for that one.  Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Kevin
First, this is a peer support forum. As such, Toshiba techs do not openly offer advice, comment, or acknowledge posts here. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the forum is at least read by some Toshiba tech(s).
On that note, in double checking everything, I noticed that on March 2, yesterday, Toshiba has posted a BIOS update v1.90 for your model. Before we ask Jim (our Administrator) to get Toshiba to double check that they have the right BIOS file(s) available for download for your system, why don't you at least try this version 1.90
    ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.90
Again, my advice is to download the BIOS update to your desktop. Double click on it, and create the bootable CD to update & backup your BIOS. Then reboot with the CD in the drive, and boot off the CD. Update and backup your BIOS, and, if the update runs, your machine will probably shut down after. Then restart off the hard drive into Windows.
If this doesn't work, and you get the same message, I would suspect that the 'Microsoft Store' where you bought it has changed the RAM or something, that is causing this message.  However, Googling your exact text strings from both error messages you have posted, only results in your post. No one else, ever appears to have posted these error messages anywhere. However, syntax and spelling are critically important.
    Let us know.  Good luck.

  • Equium A60 BIOS Update Problem

    Hiya All.
I wonder if this Community can help me?
I have been trying for ages (weeks) to try and flash my BIOS with an upgrade for my Toshiba Laptop. It is a Toshiba Equium A60.
I can get it to load Windows 98 (except that it tells me that the USB devices wont work because of conflicts in the BIOS)
My friend has exactly the same Laptop, and the BIOS Version is V1.9 and mine is V1.65  To me, this very simply means that mine is out of date!
I have downloaded the newest BIOS Version from Toshiba’s website, and they say to execute the .exe file by using 1.4 Floppy Drive. This I do not have !
You can also execute this file in Windows, except that in Windows 98 it tells me I have an error!  “Failure_DLL DetecChipset”
I have Googled this, and the only website that has the same error code is in German! And although Google will let you translate it, it don’t tell me anything!
As a last resort, I thought I could burn a CD, make that into a bootable disk, and add the Toshiba file to it.
Tried this with BartsPE but this is based on Windows XP and I cannot load XP, it gets as far as the XP Logo, then freezes. This is why I suspect the BIOS requires an update.
So, after more Googling, I have finished up at this website, hoping to make a Boot Disk, with the Toshiba Flash Files attached, but it has to be done in “Windows 98” and not XP
So………… that is my problem, anyone have any ideas please?
My mail if you wanna suggest any fixes   [email protected]

    Hi Conrad
Can you please tell me why you made BIOS updates? Did you have any problems? I use my unit almost two years and I didnt make any BIOS update till now. If everything works well it is not necessary to make any update except for some Microsoft updates that make OS safer. Dont make any update if it is not necessary.
Anyway, I am very confused with your issue. Normally Recovery DVD must not be updated. BIOS updates are useful if there is some hardware conflict or problem and not problem using OS or any software.
It will be interesting to know why you make recovery procedure every time after BIOS update.

  • G580 bios/update problem - no updates for years

    Hi there.
    I have a G580 i5-3210M @2.50GHz with 8gb ram running on Windows 7 64-bit. The model # is 2189.
I have had enormous problems updating drivers on the pc for a while, and I can give specifics of errors/drivers if that helps. One big problem I've found is using diagnosis software CPUID CPU-Z, my motherboard comes up as "Manufacturer: LENOVO", "Model: INVALID" / "00000000INVALID". I'm not sure how this contributes to my errors, but it definitley worries me.
Well, during a late night search for an updated BIOS, I found and accidently installed 5ecn96ww (v.9.01) BIOS update, which is for WINDOWS 8 and not WINDOWS 7. The system wouldn't start, so I went into the BIOS and switched onto Legacy Mode, which has allowed me to use the laptop normally (to my knowledge).
Long story, short request: How can I get my laptop back to factory settings (including factory BIOS) and start over with a fresh windows 7. Does OneKey Recovery reset the BIOS as well?
    Thanks.

    hi ahmedgad,
    Welcome to the Forums.
    Can you try to:
    1. Boot into the BIOS by repeatedly tapping F2 on startup
    2. In the BIOS, navigate to the Boot Tab and set UEFI to Disabled or Legacy then press F10 to save and exit. When
the computer reboots, check if you still get the errors and/or if you're able to boot into Windows.
    3. If same problem, leave the changes that you made on Step 2 and attempt to re-install Windows via a Windows 8 recovery drive or OneKey Recovery button (note that this will wipe the computer to factory settings)
    Let me know your findings,
    neokenchi
