BIOS will NOT recognize CD/DVD

I am trying to restore a Satellite A105 with the Recovery and Applications CD, but it just isn't working.
The CD/DVD drive is working fine in windows. The recovery CD will run and I can go through the system restore prompts up until it restarts the device. However, it will simply boot back via the HDD.
I've gone into the BIOS (CD-ROM-LAN-HDD-FDD) and set it to every boot combination that puts the CD before the HDD and saved it. Nothing. The BIOS will retain these settings the next time around, so that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've tried accessing the icons on the Toshiba startup screen via F12 and selecting the CD icon. The same thing happens. The computer will restart, pause very slightly and proceed to boot from the HD again. I've tried to restart with the recovery CD while holding down C. Same thing.
As I said, the drive works fine in windows. The boot CD works as well (it spins for a while before starting but then runs fine). However, in the BIOS it just doesn't seem to be recognized.
Can someone please help me resolve this issue?

Thank you for your help. I tried to reset the BIOS to default settings, however this did not work.
Incidentally, default BIOS settings have the HDD before the CD-ROM. The Restore CD will reset it back to CD first, but to be safe I also tried manually putting it back to CD first after applying the default BIOS settings. Still no luck with that.
As far as removing the power cable connected to the CD-ROM, how would I go about doing this? I would be worried about doing anything hardware related without very specific instructions. The laptop is a Satellite A105.
With the power cable connected to the CD-ROM removed, will the CD still function and be detected?

Windows will not recognize my dvd drive in Windows 7. It shows up under device manager under cd drives, but will not list in in my computer and will not recognize it as a drive in burning applications.

I haven't installed and started testing the BETA yet, just downloading from MS tonight.I would suspect upper & lower filters, since that is the most common cause of cd/dvd problems from XP-Vista.

  • BIOS will not recognize installed CD/DVDs

System set up auto search does not recognize installed CD players or DVD RW on IDE 2 as being present. I have installed several different units that I know are working and set up passes by them like they are not present. I have checked and replaced all cables. CD unit are getting power and will light up, open and close but they do not show up during set up nor on Windows hardware listing. I have reset CMOS with no success.
I have the most current version of BIOS for this M/B. This problem started recently when I tried to change my CD player.
    1.   Product Type:  645 Ultra (m-6547 V1.X) ATX Mainboard
    2.   BIOS Version. 3.31
    3.   External VGA Type: None
    4.   CPU Type:  P4 2.40 GHz
    5.   Memory Type: 1.00 GB
    6.   Power Supply Type:  A Power 400 watts
    7.   Operating System:  Windows XP Pro with SP2

I connected a second hard drive on IDE 2 and the BIOS failed to recognize it. I also connectted a CD to IDE 1 along with my primary hard drive and the BIOS DID recognize both my hard drive and the CD but the system would not boot up under that configuration. I have uninstalled and re-installed the controller for IDE 2 and the system still will NOT recognize anything connected to the IDE 2. The only other thing I can think of is to reinstall the BIOS. Anybody have any other suggestions on how to deal with a non-functioning IDE 2?

  • Bios will not recognize the entire Hard Drive

I am running a MSI P7N SLI Platinum right out of the box. This is an entirely new build. For some reason when I go to install Windows XP, my entire hard drive space is not listed. My hard drive is 320GB and it will only recognize 130GB of it. How do I fix this problem. I am completely new at building a system so try and keep it simple please. I will admit that I am terrified at the idea of flashing my BIOS. I dont want to void the warranty nor do I want to destroy the board and have to buy a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, there is the rest of my Hard Drive. To allocate, I just right click and hit "New Partition" and follow the steps? Furthermore, do I need to make this an extended partition or primary? I am just going to use this larger partition for storing programs and games.
Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?
"Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?"
Nope, just install chipset drivers for your board.
"Oh, there is the rest of my Hard Drive. To allocate, I just right click and hit "New Partition" and follow the steps?"
    Yes
"Furthermore, do I need to make this an extended partition or primary?"
Extended. When its done right click and format the newest partition in NTFS.

  • DVD drive will not recognize blank DVDs after upgrade to Lion.

It finds burned DVD/CDs but not blank ones. Disk utility partially sees blank dvd, gives option to eject it, but will not allow eject it. Finder does not see it at all. have to restart to have it eject. Tried different DVD's (Manufactures and -R / +R, etc). Have followed recommendations on resets and have even reloaded the OS.  This problem started immediately after upgrade from snow lepoard to lion.

Repairing permissions yes. But in my head, if everything is working fine for it, just won't read Blank media, could it be a software thing?

  • Will not recognize my dvd player

Put in a new DVD player inside my Mac Pro. Sometimes it will reconize it and sometimes not. Or it will see it for the first 10 mins. then not.
    Help!

I suspect that this is a non-apple DVD drive.  Thus you will need to change one of the settings under system preferences.  Go to the energy saver and UN TICK the "put hard discs to sleep when possible".
What is happening is that the OS loses it's connection to the DVD drive when the hard drives sleep and for some reason cannot re-connect.  When you boot your Mac it will alwyas see the DVD but depending on your activity at some later time the hard drives will slee and the DVD will disappear.  This is a very long standing problem but the fix is simple.

    what can i do?

Yeah, that's not good. You could try resetting the SMC, sometimes it helps. Other than that you have two choices replace the drive, either yourself or by someone, or just buy an external drive. Considering that your Mac is 5 years old I'd go the external route. To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Windows Vista will not recognize the dvd drive in my Mac Pro

After running windows updates, Windows Vista can no longer find the drivers for the dvd drive. Any suggestions?

Thank goodness for restore points. That was all I needed to do (system repair, do you want to restore to last check point) to be up and running.
I found my problem documented as an issue with Samsung SATA + Windows 7, and my X58. Curious, as moving a working system from one motherboard to another would always end up with Samsung SATA DVD not working, but LG is fine... so looks like time to buy another SATA DVD.
This from /technet.microsoft.com exactly describes the issue:
*CD/DVDRW from TSSTCorp (Samsung) drive, after install W7 without any problem not recognized...* | Modified on 9/9/2009 4:48 PM by lmarcelo
CD/DVD/rw do not respond on the Windows 7 Professional RC 32 bit, I have an Intel G35 desktop board, and 2.3 Ghz. CPU Intel Dual-Core 2, with sata optical drive. (From Samsung) Works fine in the raw clean install, but after the second reboot in the device manager appears with a yellow triangle, so I can't read nor write any CD or DVD.
I did this several times, (Format and install), even with a new CD drive, but it's always the same. Using a 160 Gb. WD hard disk, and alternated with a 400 Gb Samsung Sata HD make no difference at all.
Problem: Can't do anything with CD-DVD drive. (Messagge in the Device System General tab Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)).
By the way, this configuration was working fine in XP Pro. SP3. Any hint? clue? same problem? any one?

  • ITunes will not recognize my DVD/CD-RW Drive as being in the right location

I have un-installed and reinstalled iTunes completely, and correctly, but iTunes still thinks my CD-RW drive is D: when it's E:, and I'm pretty sure it has something to do with putting in a new Hard Drive, so now my computer has 2 hard drives, and one disc drive, and the disc drive was originally D:, but now it's E:, if anyone knows what to do, I am very good with computers, all my friends are too, and we have all tried everything we know...

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

  • DVD Drive will not recognize any movie DVD disk in the drive - thus will not play any dvd movies.

HP G71 449WV dvd drive will not recognize any dvd disc that has a movie on it. Will not play movies, keeps saying to insert disc when there is a disc in there.  It will recognize a dvd data disc or a blank dvd, it just will not recognize any dvd movies.  I've tried the microsoft fix it, downloaded new codecs, using different dvd playback software but none of that works since the drive will not recognize there is even a dvd movie in the drive.  Computer is out of warranty.

Hello crollinsphoto1, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that you're not able to play movie DVD's in the DVD player in your notebook. I will try to assist you with this.
I'd recommend starting with this document:
Resolving DVD and Blu-ray Movie Problems (Windows 7).
Also, are these purchased DVD's or burnt DVD's?
Do the movies play in other sources? (DVD player, other PC)
Let me know how this goes.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.  This will show whether the problem is with Windows or a Hardware problem with the optical drive.

  • Will not recognize jump drive nor allow me to open DVD tray

Intermittantly, my G5 will not show my jump drive nor a CD on the desktop. At those times, it will not open the DVD tray either.
When this happens, I can go to system profiler and see both the jump drive and the CD--it's just not showing up on the desktop so I can't open them. The only way I can get the tray to open and to recognize the CD and or Jump Drive is to reboot the computer.
What is going on and why don't these show up on the desktop nor allow me to open the DVD tray.
