Bios will not recognize the entire Hard Drive

I am running a MSI P7N SLI Platinum right out of the box. This is an entirely new build. For some reason when I go to install Windows XP, my entire hard drive space is not listed. My hard drive is 320GB and it will only recognize 130GB of it. How do I fix this problem. I am completely new at building a system so try and keep it simple please. I will admit that I am terrified at the idea of flashing my BIOS. I dont want to void the warranty nor do I want to destroy the board and have to buy a new one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have listed my specs below.

Oh, there is the rest of my Hard Drive. To allocate, I just right click and hit "New Partition" and follow the steps? Furthermore, do I need to make this an extended partition or primary? I am just going to use this larger partition for storing programs and games.
Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?
"Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?"
Nope, just install chipset drivers for your board.
"Oh, there is the rest of my Hard Drive. To allocate, I just right click and hit "New Partition" and follow the steps?"
Yes
"Furthermore, do I need to make this an extended partition or primary?"
Extended. When its done right click and format the newest partition in NTFS.

There are a number of posts related to access issues between Windows Vista / 7 and AirPort Disks. Two potential solutions being forwarded are: 1) Changing the LAN Manager authentication level, and/or 2) Disabling the Windows Search feature.
To change the LAN Manager authentication level:
From the Windows Vista / 7 desktop, click Start
    Search for: security
    Click 'Local Security Policy'
Goto Local Policies > Security Options
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level'
Change level to: Send LM & NTLM responses
Under Policy, double-click 'Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including RPC) clients'
    De-select 'Require 128-bit encryption'
    Click OK
     To disable Windows Search:
Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features
On the right-hand side, click "Turn Windows features on/off"
Scroll down, and de-select "Windows Search".
Press OK, close all windows and restart.
A third "solution," that has worked for me, is verify that both the AirPort base station and the Win7 PC are using the exact same Workgroup Name. In my case, I use "WORKGROUP" (without the quote marks) for this name. From the AirPort Utility, you would enter this value on the Disks > File Sharing tab. On Win7, Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System > Change Settings > Change > Workgroup

  • Disk utility & TechTool Pro will not recognize volumes on hard drive

My Powerbook G4 will not start up. This is what happens:
    1. Startup chime
    2. Hard drive starts to make a constant 'pause-click, pause-click' like a skipping vinyl record sound
    3. Then I only get as far as the flashing question mark on screen
I have disconnected all peripherals. I have booted up from install CD and used *Disk Utility* and it does not recognize the hard drive, only the CDR drive. I have booted from the Apple Hardware Test CD. All hardware passes. I have booted off the *TechTool Pro CD* and tried to run the entire suite of diagnositc tests. All hardware passes, all drives pass, but when I get to Volumes and Files, none are recognized. I have tried to get to the *Startup Manager*, but I can't get to that point either, only as far as the flashing question mark. I would like to be able to salvage data from the harddrive, so haven't tried to reinstall software and OS.
It seems to me that the hard drive is probably dead and I probably need to replace it, but is there any hope to recover data from the old hard drive
Any suggestions on what else I might try or on confirming my tentative diagnosis, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply Tom,
I mostly save my work related documents on external flash drives or zip drive media, so my most important data for the most part is backed up. However, I had gotten a bit unattentive with personal interest stuff, like photos, music etc. I'll probably think of something important months from now and realize it was only on that drive, but for now I am most concerned about my downloaded emails and email addressbook. I never thought to back those up. Makes me want to stop running Thunderbird and keep all my emails online. Anyway I have some recent business inquiry emails from new contacts that are stuck on that drive. Can't recall the exact name of the organization this person was with. Aghh.
Think there is any use trying one of those data recovery programs to see if I could extract some information from the disk?
I am realizing that I will probably need a new hard drive to get the computer running . A friend's dad who is a computer teacher (though mostly PC but has kids with Macs so he's been working with Macs a bit and learning) mentioned the possibility of putting in a new hard drive as the start up drive then installing the old one as a secondary hard drive so I can try to access my data that way. Think that sounds like a feasible option to try? Perhaps I could run the recovery within that configuration. Worth a try? Pointless?
I appreciate any words of wisdom or commiseration.
    Thanks,
    Applangel

  • How can I restore Windows 7 to Bootcamp partition - not reformat the entire hard drive?

    Hello Apple (Mac) Community,
I originally posted this question over on answers.microsoft, but no help was forthcoming. Hope someone can help me with a problem that's (almost) making me nuts! I teach graphics to college students. In brief: I run Windows 7 Pro 64 on a Mac Pro tower, along with Snow Leopard (OSX). Windows is loaded on one partition of a 1TB drive. The other partition is a Mac backup. The Mac OS is on a different drive. Everything was going swimmingly with both OS, until recently. Unfortunately, the drive with Windows showed problems and I determined that the HD was either toast or needed a total reformat. My Mac data was all backed-up. Now I wanted to backup Windows so I can easily get back to the relatively happy point of my Windows 7 experience (drivers loaded, dual monitors all working, etc.). I did some online searching and the recommendation was to create a "system image" of the existing Windows 7 install by attaching an external drive, formatting that to NTFS and selecting "backup to image" in Windows. I did that and also took the opportunity to "create a backup disc" on a DVD. (Windows recommended). Next I rebooted back to Mac OS and completely reformatted the problem 1TB disc to a single partition, zero all data, just to see if it would actually reformat. It all worked! So far, so good. Next I used Bootcamp to create two partitions, one for Windows. I then restarted using the Win7 Pro (64) install disc, reformatted the Bootcamp disk to NTFS (as required) and installed Windows 7. After all that is completed and all working, I next try to use the restore from image function while booted in Windows. I'm instructed to restart from the Win install disc, which I do. Here's where things get difficult. When I try to choose restore from image, at that point the installer asks which drives to I want to exclude... but does not show partitions, only full HDs. I do not want to reformat the entire 1TB drive. I only want Windows on the 120gb Bootcamp partition (which is already formatted for Windows BTW). I spent a lot of time online reading through articles with users having the same frustration.
So here (at long last) is my question: How can I either restore Windows just to a Bootcamp partition... using "Windows System Image" or if that can't be done... can I somehow import all of the settings, etc. from the "image" (image is on external HD) into a fresh Win 7 install? So far the "backup disc" also seems useless. I can't even boot to Windows from it. BTW Apple folks: the only response on the MS side was that some "expert" simply posted links on how to install Windows and restore... not helpful with my particular problem of restoring to a partition.
Any help would be appreciated! Hopefully some help that even a Mac user / new Windows user could understand would be better! Thanks!

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • Macbook Pro will not recognize my external hard drive

I just updated to a newer MacBook Pro.  I ran Time Machine on my old Macbook from a 2TB external USB hard drive.  When I hooked the hard drive to my new Mac, it wouldn't allow me to select it as the drive for Time Machine.  So I dismounted the hard drive and hooked it back to my old macbook to see if it still registered there (which it did).  Now when I try and hook the hard drive to my new macbook, it will not recognize it at all.  First question, why will it not recognize my new macbook, and second question, why does Time Machine not recognize the hard drive?  It has my old time machine files on it...hopefully I don't have to reformat it and lose all my backup??

My hard drive is now connected.  But Time Machine will not let me select the hard drive as my back up drive. This hard drive was used on another Macbook, so Time Machine doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive on the new one.  Do I need to reformat the hard drive? I hate to do that because I have the previous backups on there.

  • Power Mac G4 will not Recognize any Internal Hard Drives

My G4 was working fine and I wanted to install a driver for a 'Twin Turbo Mac Video Card' I had in a PCI slot but it required OS9 running. At the time, I had two internal drives 230 and 120 G running 10.4.11 but no OS9. However, I did have an external Firewire Drive with OS9 and OSX. I set my "Startup Disk" preference to boot from FW drive and selected OS9 then shut down my G4. When I powered back on I got the standard "gong" but on my display I saw a "Mac Folder and a Question Mark". I believe that means the system can't find a drive. Is that correct? I reverted back to my original configuration with the internal drives and the FW drive disconnected and I still see the "Folder and Question Mark". I inserted the Tiger DVD, held down the "C" key and it still will not boot from the DVD either. I once again tried connecting a FireWire External drive with OS 10.4.11 installed and the internal drives disconnected and still no bootup. I swapped out Memory, replaced the Motherboard and the battery and even tried resetting the PRAM. Still that stupid Question Mark is showing!! This has really got me puzzled. Any ideas or suggestions out there?

Depressing/holding the Option key at startup activates the Startup Manager (not open firmware). The resulting window shows all of the available startup volumes (hard drives, CD, DVD, etc).

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

The projector may actually be processing a 3 digit number in numerical sequence.  Have you tried your export/collection in order  sequence starting with 101?  Assuming you have fewer than 899 images you should be OK. (I had to fiddle with export sequence for a display frame which used the file date and time for sequence!)

Windows will not recognize my dvd drive in Windows 7. It shows up under device manager under cd drives, but will not list in in my computer and will not recognize it as a drive in burning applications.

I haven't installed and started testing the BETA yet, just downloading from MS tonight.I would suspect upper & lower filters, since that is the most common cause of cd/dvd problems from XP-Vista.

LR 5 does not recognize my external hard drive. It has  recognized this drive in the past. No help at any Adobe site.

My external HD  contains photos I have worked on in the past.
Additionally, I have added photos to LR5 directly onto my Mac HD. (38

Presently, in the Library mode, the Le Cie external HD is not seen in the

The only way to "see" the La Cie HD and its photos is in the "Import" mode.

Photoshop 7 will not recognize my fire wire drives as scratch disks.
Using Photosop 7.0.1 & Mac OS X Tiger on G4 Tower with AGP Graphics.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

The drives need to be formatted as Macintosh HFS+ Extended (not Windows or FAT32, for instance), and you must have full read/write permissions to them.
Otherwise, Photoshop will not let you select them as scratch disk drives.  Of course, formatting will completely erase the entire drive, so if you have anything on them you need to keep, you'll need to back it up first.
If necessary, do a Get Info (Command I) on the icon of the drive in the Finder and check "Ignore Ownership on this drive"; but first the drive needs to be formatted as Macintosh Extended.

  • Windows 7 will not recognize the ipod.

I have an ipod 4th touch 64 gig. Windows 7 will not recognize the ipod. It will make the noise of a connection and will only charge. It will not show in my computer as a hard drive. It will show in Itunes and other third party programs. I have searched the net and tried most of the advice to try and fix but will still not show as a hard drive.
Has anyone had this problem and if so is there a fix?
    thanks

I did read along the way about some of the ipods not being recognized as a HD. I just installed Iexplorer and looks like it will do the job. As long as I have something other than Itunes to see it as a HD. I use Syncios and Copy Trans and both work great as to transfer music. But to see the ipod as a HD iexplorer will do the Job.
Again my ipod 4th gen will show in my computer but only the DCIM folder and a few other with pictures, no music folder or the control folder from the ipod.
My ipad works great and another ipod the long thin ones work but not this ipod touch 4 gen 64 gig.
Any other suggestions or help much appreciated
