BIOS won't see GRUB after installation (??)

Hi all.
I've been experimenting with Linux for a couple of years now just for the heck of it, and still I don't consider myself "that good", so I decided to try out Arch myself to "test" my Linux skills. Installing on a VM is too easy, since I could do things carelessly, so now, I'm trying to get it running on real hardware.
So onto the problem. Sorry for the long intro
For now, I'm trying to dualboot Vista and Arch with the suggested layout in the guides. Overall, I have 149GB of space. Here's a screenshot of EASEUS showing my partitioning. I didn't actually make the partitions with EASEUS but with GParted. Anyway, here it is.
Everything after drive D is an extended partition, and stuff under it are logical (I'm not really sure of what I'm talking about here, but that's how I set them up )
The last 4 are in this order(since it can't be seen in Windows):
- /boot
- linux-swap
- /home
Just a few more details: I skipped the part that involves using cfdisk since I already partitioned my disk with Gparted. I moved on to the mount points thingy, and selected the first option (the one with the /dev). I was pretty sure that I only had to pick one. Then I set the partition's respective mount points. Went on with the installation and installed GRUB on /boot (sda5 in my case, in case you're wondering).
After everything was done with the installation, I realized that I forgot to set the bootable flag thingy on sda5, and so I did, with GParted. Restarted again, and still nothing --' I could still boot to Vista though when I re-set the boot flag on sda1.
Any help? Any step that I'm missing?

@Inxsible: Mmmkay, I'll try that out right now. I'll just reinstall Arch since it'd be such a hassle setting up grub without Arch booting
@Cagnulein: /boot is sda5. I checked with the cfdisk before I moved on to setting mount points
@hokasch - Thanks. Setting bootflag to sda1

My bios won't see my WD 36,7 Raptor. Everything is connected correct so i don't understand whats wrong.
can anyone help me, please?     tnx

press ctrl + f during boot up and create a raid array.
THEN you press f6 key as you described.
you need to create a raid array even if its only 1 drive.
you should also consider to change that crap psu you got.
a q-tec 400w is MUCH worse than a enermax 300w for example and they tend to blow up way to often

  • Getting an error in grub after installation

    Hi
Im new to Arch Linux, and I have tried to install Arch some times now, but I never get a working bootloader.
When I have installed grub I get this error after chosing to boot Arch Linux. I have also tried lilo, but it didnt work either.
    Booting "Arch Linux"
    root (hd0,4)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda5 ro
    [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1e00, size=0x1a2518]

    Press any key to continue...

    instead of reinstalling
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Res … oot_loader
reinstalling is wasting time you need to change your /boot/grub/menu.lst to correct settings
try following the directions in the link above
easiest is to boot into your normal Arch Linux using the Arch Installation CD kernel. Put the CD in the drive and reboot. When the boot: prompt comes up, boot with the CD's kernel, but specify the root partition to boot from
    vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5
if you get kernel panic its more than likely the wrong partition for root(/dev/sda5)
then boot up cd normally go to partition your drive take a look at what partition has been formated for archs root
or post your partition layout here & it will be easier to guide you through
    ie:
    sda1  = MS
    sda5 = arch
    sda6 = swap
im just guessing this is how you got it setup
heres an example of what you may have in your system
Name Flags Part Type FS Type [Label] Size (MB)
    sda1 Boot Primary NTFS [^A] 9483.75
    sda5 Logical Linux ext3 28887.19
    sda6 Logical Linux swap / Solaris 1028.16

  • ITunes updates and Firefox 3.0 won't open up after installation...

I really hope someone can solve this thing...
I can't install iTunes updates (from 7.1.2 on) and Firefox 3.0, because they both present the same problem: after download and regular installation, when I click on the .app to open it up, the icon jumps two or three times in the dock, then it disappears and bye bye.
At this point there is just nothing i can do, if not uninstall the newer version using AppDelete and reinstall the last working version, that is Firefox 2.* and iTunes 7.1.1 ...
As you can see i'm on an iMac with OSX 10.4.11..
does someone have a clue what is the cause of this???

what is that "archive and Install"?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
yes, i remember that i tried to log in with another account and the software worked...
Then the software is not the problem. The problem is something specific to your account. Performing an archive & install will unlikely work in this case as the reinstall will retain your user settings (I assume you do want to retain them at any rate) and that's where the problem is lurking
Is a crash report generated when the apps don't work? If no "Unexpectedly Quit" dialog window appears, check in Home > Library > Logs > CrashReporter to see if there are logs for iTunes/Firefox. If there are, can you post the text of the most recent crashes here?

  • Desktop Manager won't open up after installation

There were a couple of posts on this top back in mid 2010 but unfortunately no reply but I'm hoping someone out there can help:
Whenever I try to start up up Desktop Manager software I get a Windows message saying "... has encountered a problem and needs to close." There is some help about this problem occuring at synchronization but I can't even get started at all! I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times but to no avail. Oddly and maybe significantly, at download, says the software is 108MB but the installed software states only 99.5MB. I am running Windows XP.
    Can anyone help? Thanks

    Hi Graham,
    I'm running Windows XP 2002, SP3 version. I have a 1.75GHz Pentium processor and 1GB RAM.
Forgive me, I'm not 100% clear on your second question. I downloaded the file from www.blackberry/desktopsoftware. I use Google Chrome as my browser and I ran the set up file straight from the toolbar at the bottom of the browser rather than from where the file is saved in My Documents/ Downloads.
    Does that answer your query?

  • Grub error after installation

    hi,
i am unable to boot into arch after installing it from a usb stick.
grub simply says "error:file not found" and drops me to a "grub rescue" prompt. i was surprised because i remember seeing "grub was successfully installed" during installation.
after booting into a live cd of mint, i tried to use cfdisk which showed
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk
"fdisk -l" gives this output :
    mint@mint /mnt/sda1/grub $ sudo fdisk -l

    /dev/sda4 4264 14597 83003392 5 Extended
this is the way i assigned the partitions during installation:
       sda1 ---> 64mb ---> /boot
       sda2 ---> 30000mb ---> /root
       sda3 ---> 5000mb ---> /home
i added the remaining space as an extended partition (sda4), while in mint.
Upon checking menu.lst, i found that the boot entries took the uuid of my /root partition instead of my /boot partition (no idea of how that happened). i changed them to the correct uuid but i am still getting the same error.
i have conducted fsck checks on all 3 partitions and they are all clean (no corruption of files).
these are the files in my boot partition:
    mint@mint /mnt/sda1 $ ls
    diag1.img kernel26-lts-fallback.img System.map26-lts
    grub kernel26-lts.img vmlinuz26

does anybody have an idea as to howto fix this? i have been on linux for only 5 months now, and cant think of anything further to do, so any kind of help would be welcome.

Are you still frustrated because of cfdisk which gives you something like this:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder
Press any key to exit cfdisk
Here, I'm trying to install archlinux on a pendrive and I get almost the same error when trying to manually format the disk. The only difference is that it mention partition 0 instead of partition 3... I guess there is a bug in the livecd?
I'm having this problem with  archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso.

Try starting up with your Snow Leopard DVD and see if the disk can be repaired. Once you are at the installer screen go to the Utilities Menu and choose Disk Utility and choose repair disk. You might also want to try Diskwarrior.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't see Exchange Server after installation

I know it must be simple, but after installation of Exchange Server 2013 on Server 2012 R2 and getting the "successful" installation message, I can't find the server. It was not problem on Server 2008 and Exchange 2010.
Any ideas as to where I should go to look for Exchange?  I can't even setup mailboxes???!!!
I really am lost on this one.

    Hello,
In addition to above: make sure that Exchange 2013 is installed correctly. Check Exchange installation logs and run the Get-ExchangeServer command using Exchange Management Shell on the new server. You should see both Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 servers.
    Hope it helps,

  • Won't restart successfully after Tiger installation --- Help!

    Howdy!
I'm finally updating to OS X from 9.2.2. Everything was humming along smoothly with the installation. My computer restarted after installation, but then hung for quite a while on the grey apple screen with the twirlygig at the bottom of the screen, and then, horror of all horrors, a big circle with a slash replaced the apple... and there it stays. I have to manually reboot the machine to get it to restart to either the old 9.2 partition or from the 10.4.3 installation DVD.
From the Tiger DVD, I've verified and repaired the disk and permission (if didn't come up with any errors, but I repaired it anyway).
I've re-installed the OS with all devices except the keyboard unplugged -- nothing changed.
    Any ideas?
I'm trying to install it onto a 120 GB Maxtor internal drive that has not given me any problems in the past. The hd is partitioned for a 9 and X OS... I also still have the original 20 GB internal hd installed.
Should I try removing RAM that was added years ago? Or installing it onto the original 20 GB hd? Or will I have to try an Erase and Install? Will this option just erase the partition set up for OS X, or will it erase the entire hard disk?
    Thanks for any assistance.

I'm actually unsure if the version of Disk Utility on the Tiger Install disc can do an erase and install on one partition of a partitioned hard drive or if the erase and install wipes the entire HD; I'll have to check into that when I can. There was in the past a known issue where OS X had to be installed on the first partition of a partitioned HD; I believe that's no longer true, but the default at startup for OS X is to look for the OS X System on the first partition (if you hold the 'x' key down at startup to boot into OS X, that's the expected location). If the OS 9 partition is the first partition, that may be throwing the OS X Install restart off. You might check to see if using Startup Manager to select the second partition works. I'd also rename the partition from "OS X" to somethhing else (say "OSTen"), just to be safe.

  • My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after new software (security update 2013-003) installation-- hangs at grey screen with "software update" at top.  It also intermittently goes to sleep without my asking.  What to do?

My Mac 10.7.5 won't shut down after a new software installation (Security Update 2013-003).  It just hangs at a grey screen with "Software Update" at the top.  I have to force quit, then restart-- but the new software hasn't installed.
My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

Hi, I've just come accross the same problem... did you manage to get a resolution??

  • Computer won't turn on after Panther installation

I installed Panther successfully on my iMac G5. After I hit "restart" the computer is stuck on gray and the wheel is turning but the computer never completely turns on. I have forced it shut and tried numerous times to restart the computer but it continues to do the same thing. Any suggestions on how to get the computer to start? Perhaps it won't start because the installation DVD is still in the computer. Is there some way to manually eject the DVD without the computer being turned on?

You may be right about the disk thing. Hold the mouse click down on startup, until the DVD is ejected.
If that fails, zap PRAM. Hold down optcnd+RP on startup, and listen for three bongs before you let go.

  • Clock won't keep time after Mavericks installation

My clock no longer keeps time properly after installation of Mavericks. This problem affects all of my iMacs immediately post-Mavericks, so it's not an issue with a bad battery.
The symptom is: The clock drifts by about a minute per day. Clicking the Date & Time applet in Settings immediately syncs the clock to the correct time. So the NTP servers are obviously working. It's just that Mavericks doesn't make use of them to set the system clock unless the Date & Time applet is clicked.
I followed the advise here and used the UI to set multiple time servers. I used the recommended string: 0.us.pool.ntp.org, 1.us.pool.ntp.org, 2.us.pool.ntp.org, 3.us.pool.ntp.org
After having made this change, instead of the clock losing thirty seconds per day, now it gains one minute per day.
As you can see from the log, it executes a few time syncs correctly and then just stops. The last sync was executed back on 1/17/14 at 4:40pm:
Apparently the problem can be solved if the user knows Unix and can actually recompile parts of the operating system. This is way beyond my level of expertise.
Bottom line: Apple's OS releases have gradually been getting worse and worse and Mavericks' quality is degraded to the point where even basic operations like keeping track of time are apparently now impossible without in depth Unix & compiler knowledge. This is pretty much the last straw for me and I'm reverting back to Windows and that horrible Metro interface (it's ugly and impractical but at least it can tell time). But I can't switch out all of my iMacs overnight. I have to deal with Mavericks for a while longer. Is there a workaround to get this wretched OS to tell time properly without having to deal with cryptic Unix commands and OS recompilations?

I didn't want to recompile ntp or start messing with system files that would end up getting overwritten on the next system update, so here's the solution I came up with.
I have a cron job running every 4 hours.  In terminal, type
    crontab -e
then, on the first line, type:
    0 */4 * * * sudo /usr/sbin/ntpdate -u time.apple.com
(make sure there is a carriage return at the end)
This will sync your clock to the apple time servers every 4 hours. I have my cron set up where it actually e-mails me, so I've been monitoring the output, and have been adjusting more than 1 second each time it runs, which means I've been losing 6 seconds per day with this bug. That's bad even for a cheap alarm clock from WalMart.

    Hello, yogendra k saini
I'd installed oracle90 and 1.2.2 in different oracle homes. There was no error message. When i pressed the icon. Nothing happens.
Yesterday i installed also a 8.1.7 database on the same machine as the 9.0.1.4 database. After a reinstallation of appserv 1.2.2a everything seems to work fine.
but it is still a mystery for me why, because when i only install a 9.0.1.4 database and appserv 1.2.2.2 something goes wrong. Maybe APpserv 1.2.2. doesn't work fine with 9.0 database. That's not exactly true because i used appserv 1.2.2 for forms en reports...
