Birthday reminders in Ical??

I have all of my friends birthdays in Icall, but never get a reminder. How can I turn this on?? Thank you

If you don't want to receive alerts from a calendar in iCal:
Click on the calendar in question one time to higlight its name.
Go to Edit > Get Info.
Put a check mark in "Ignore alerts".
This will keep the events in iCal but prevent an alarm / pop-up window.

When I moved from MobileMe to iCLoud I choose to set reminders for all birthdays. Now, I regret that as I do not need them and they are rather annoying (I have hundreds of contacts and birthdays).
How do I change the settings so the birthdays will never show a reminder anymore? I cannot find it. I resorted to manually deleting every reminder from every single birthday in iCal. However, after I upgraded my hard disk and I set up a new system, all reminders are back.
Obviously, I do not want to go over the same procedure again. What to do?

How do I set birthday reminders without having to create a separate contact card for each person in a family?

I'm trying to set birthday reminders in iCal based on the birthday field in Contacts. But in order to create separate birthday entries for individuals in the same family, you have to set up a separate card for each person. Anyway around that?

Thank you to johnbeardy, Anthony.Ralph and Rob for your replies. The OP (I guess that's me, Maps Man) has been happy with CS since CS2. I have upgraded etc and used it successfully. Unfortunately, I have recently up graded my camera as well but CS5 would not read the new RAW files. My natural inclination was to look at a CS upgrade but Adobe effectively priced me out. It obviously is not interested in amateur hobbyists anymore perhaps because they don't produce enough cash for Adobe. Even the new "Cheap" offer they are offering is still very pricey as well as being ongoing for life. I looked at a variety of alternatives including Elements, Lightroom and DxO Pro 8. In the meantime I used a combination of Nikon's ViewNX2 to judge my uploads off camera then Adobe DNG Converter to change them to DNG and back to CS5 for the fun bit. Rightly or wrongly, I decided that Lightroom was the least objectionable both for cost and user friendliness. And I do like the results I get using it. I can now go back to coming straight out of camera, do a substantial amount of edit work and go directly to CS5 for final touches such as size and frame (perhaps Lightroom does that also but I have not yet found how! Time will tell.) It is just that I find the first part so annoying. I do not mind organisations giving us suggestions (e.g. Catalogues) I just find it a nuisance that I cannot say "Thanks, but no thanks it is too complicated for what I want." As for using it "properly" it is debatable whether Adobe's engineers have done it "properly" if they don't give that choice. After all, CS5 etc does not need catalogues to work well so why should Lightroom's catalogues be "proper?"
Obviously I will be sticking with Lightroom and I will try to find my way round the problem. I had hoped that there may have been some way to customize it for my needs but there does not seem to be.

Birthday Display in iCal

The birthdays I have in Address Book are not being displayed on my iCal calendar. The iCal preference is set to display birthdays. Also the birthday calendar is checked to be displayed in the select calendars to show tab (work, home birthdays) on the calendar home display page.
When I enter birthday in the iCal search a list shows up at the bottom of the iCal window displaying the birthday, type and title (the individuals). Shouldn't these birthdays show up as an event on the home calendar page on the birthday day? Seems silly to have to go to iCal search to see what birthdays are upcoming.
If this is true, can reminders be set to notify X days prior?

Found the answer myself!
Refresh the iCal plist file:
The com.apple.iCal.plist file is in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder.
To get to the Library folder use Finder > Go (while depressing the "Option" key) > and select LIbrary.
Quit iCal.
Drag the iCal.plist file to your Desktop.
Then log out/in or restart iCal.
Now go back to iCal preferences and they have been refreshed - the birthday check box is now available.

I am unable to import my reminders into ical. Everything I've read shows that I need to select "show reminders" under View in ical, but this isn't an option (It's not even that I can't select it. It's just not there). My reminders and calendar are all visible on icloud, just not visible together on my mac.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, no answer, but I have the same problem. I was trying to research why shared reminder lists between my wife and I, who have different AppleIDs, seemed to no longer work. We set them up originally using iCal on icloud.com and shared them per the instructions we'd found. They worked great, but seemed to be no longer working recently. I finally got around to trying to troubleshoot but in no way can get the Reminders list to show in iCal on the website anymore (just like you found). I was wondering if perhaps they were separating sharing functionality into the Reminders app but don't see it there either (nor even a Settings).
Note we still have the reminder lists on our devices (even the ones that were "owned" by the other), however when you use them, it's as if they were only your personal lists - they share only on your AppleID. Any help appreciated.

Reminders in ical

I have a reminders list synced between my iphone and my computer.
For some reason, I can't complete or edit certain reminders on my computer that I created in my iphone. If I update the event in my iphone - it will update on the computer - but I can't edit the event while working on my computer.
I think I should be able to change the event in either spot.
Does anyone have advice on how to fix this? Thanks.

UPDATE: There's no issue changing reminders using the reminders app on icloud.
For now my workaround will just be to use the icloud site on my computer for the reminder list.
It seems like the only time I have an issue is when I try to update the reminders in ical on my computer.
I checked to see if the app store had a reminders only app - similar to what's on my iphone and the icloud site - but I couldn't find one.
Maybe the issue has to do with the fact that the iphone and icloud have a reminders list separate from the calendar - but it seems odd that the reminders in ical doesn't seem to have the same funcionality.

I totally agree. I just wasted .5 hrs trying to figure out how to manipulate and sync the reminders with the iCAl. Thanks for posting this thread online, I can stop wasting my time now. Apple, please change it back or make these apps sync.
Side note. I was creating my to do list and found the ability to asign a date by draging the task to the calendar in the bottom right. Then I discovered that I can drag that same reminder/to-do task into iCal and it will be created as an event. Would be great if I could simply sync the reminders to iCal instead of draging them over though. Then when I make the change in one the other can update with the next sync. This also prevents human error if I drag and drop the reminder onto the wrong date in iCal.

I can't edit my iCloud reminders in iCal

Hi all,
I've got my MacBook set up with Lion 10.7.2, and my iPad and iPhone are now running iOS 5. I have an iCloud account set up and am happily syncing reminders back and forth. My problem though is this: I can't seem to edit reminders in iCal on my MacBook. I can edit them on the devices, just not on the computer.
I can doubleclick on an iCloud reminder just fine and its bubble pops up, but there's no way I can see to actually edit the data there. Same if I select the reminder and then choose "Edit Reminder" from the Edit menu. It looks like this screenshot:
So does anyone know if I may have set something up wrong, or if I've stumbled across a bug of some sort? Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

I tried to include a screenshot in my original post, but apparently it didn't work.
I can edit regular reminders just fine doing what you describe. However, when I try to do the same thing for a repeating reminder, the popup that comes up is not editable. That's the frustrating part.
I suspect the theory espoused earlier on the thread is correct, i.e., that iCal hasn't had real support for repeating reminders built into it yet. I can work around the problem so far by updating the reminders in question on either my iPhone or iPad, but that particular workaround is useful only if you have an iPhone or iPad.

If you are willing to wait, Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Inspired by iPad. Made for the Mac explains that a "Reminders" application will be included in the next release of OS X.

Cannot edit Reminders in iCal

I cannot edit some of the Reminders in iCal on my MacPro. I tried to figure out what's different about the ones I can't edit, and it may be that they are set to "repeat every day" - I can change them on my iPhone with the Reminders app, but it doesn't make sense to me that I can't change that on my computer. I'd like to end the repeat every day w/out having to use my iPhone.
Does anyone know what's the problem - is it fixable?

Seeing Reminders in iCal iOS7?

for some reason i am not finding any documentation on reminders and clicking "Reminders Help" pulls up a nothing available page.
does anyone know if it is possible to see Reminders that i have assigned a "reminder" date and time to in iCal?
this would be mighty helpful to me and i am not finding anything on google or otherwise.

that's a major bummer.
so - can you help me a bit more here? i am trying to knit things together a little more here and reminders has some interesting aspects to it (particularly the location alert on the phone).
also, i think i am taking your advice to go with Evernote which seems like it is a bit slicker than when i first tried it.
now i have notational velocity for sort of very data heavy lists, evernote for important lists and reminders for daily-weekly-yearly to do lists.
is there any way to get daily-weekly-yearly type /reminders/ into iCal so that i can actually see them? i mean, it seems very chaotic to have my alerts keyed to appointments in iCal but to have my to do list solely residing in Reminders - you know what i mean? i mean, i guess reminders will let me set an alert that i receive as a message (or an email or something - i forget) but it would be helpful to be able to see some kind of list of these at the very least and a /chronological/ list tied to a calendar would be wicked helpful for me...

ICloud: reminders in iCal all over the place, unable to sort

Since I have switched my .me account to iCloud I have been unable to auto sort reminders in iCal on my Mac by date as I used to be able to before the switch.
Before I had the option to sort by date when I clicked on the small triangle on the right side of "reminders". Now there are only all different icloud reminder categories shown.
Surprisingly, when Im using safari and login to ical in icloud reminders are sorted by date as I want it.
Any of you experiencing the same problem or knowing how to solve this issue?

I just talked to Apple Express service over this same problem. I went to the trouble of transferring my to-do list onto icloud Reminders - where each item can be given a priority ranking and where you are then given options for how to sort the list of Reminders you entered. I chose "by priority" of course, but you can also choose alphabetically, etc. However, of course, the point of doing all this is so that the Reminders are available on your actual device - my iphone. I then found that the Reminders list was an unsorted jumble on my iphone. Even when I tap out a Reminder on my iphone itself and choose a priority, the item remains at the bottom of the list as the last thing I typed in. Apple Express Support "explains" that the priority ranking and the sorting choices are "not supported". They offered me "an article" that explains this in detail. In other words, engaging with the Reminder function and choosing priorities and choosing sort orders is all just a cruel joke wasting your time. I would have been better off just printing off my Reminders list on paper and circling the high priority items in red ink. Oh - but you can't print it out either.
