BIS services on Z10

Hi
Currently i am using BB 8520 curve and using Airtel BIS services. I want to know whether these BIS will work on my new Z10 and if not then what is the option.
Also please tell me if i use normal gprs what is security for mails and other data. Is the mail service will be the same as in the case of BIS like push mail from blackberry server.
Please help

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BIS is no longer required for email functionality, though there is some debate as to if BBM requires BIS or not (I think not, and that BIS is entirely eliminated, but the carrier must still provision things correctly for BBM to function). BlackBerry has implemented ActiveSync for email, and it no longer uses BIS as the interface between the email server and the device. The device no directly interacts with the email server via ActiveSync. I do not know what security exists...I believe that if you have BES, higher security may well be usable (likely server set, and requiring BES10).
In some cases, it has actually been reported that leaving BIS attached to an account when shifting to a BB10 device actually prevents many functions...requiring the carrier to remove BIS from the account, which allows the BB to then function correctly. I do not know if this is the case with your specific carrier or not.
In general, all that is required is a generic data plan...but you must ask your carrier for anything specific.
Good luck!

Ok but will BBM still work without BIS?
Yes, generically...but only your carrier can tell you anything for sure as they are in control of all of your services. There are many "flavors" of BIS, and some carrier folks still refer to BIS even when they don't actually need to assign BIS for BB10 devices. Such is the nature of a brand new, and very revolutionary change to how BBs function for the carriers. But the carrier does need to configure your account with them correctly so that you receive the services to which you are entitled.
    Lunabel wrote:
Also my Carrier tells me that i do have a unlimited data plan, but its my fault that i get charged because they say that i use APN and i bypass their blackberry network.
I tried leaving APN empty, but by default it puts my carrier's APN, and if i leave it empty it just doesn't let me save.
Also if i use a incorrect APN, i stop having internet.
Its like they don't believe me that i can't leave APN empty.
So i think i will just get a normal data plan but i don't want to lose the BBM.
They need to tell you exactly how all of that needs to be configured for their network and services. For instance, on mine, I cannot even change anything about the APN settings...AT&T's network is configuring those for my device, and locking me out of controlling the fields. So they are responsible for ensuring that information is correct to provide the services I am entitled to, at the costs my service plan dictates.
Everything I've been told is that BB10 devices will receive BBM but do not require a BIS service plan to do so, that a generic data plan is all that is required. But, each carrier controls their network, so yours needs to tell you what must be configured so as to provide you access to the services you are entitled to at the costs your contract dictates.
    Good luck!

  • Activating BIS service in china! Help!

I am hoping someone can fill me in with the general info needed to activate BIS service.
I just moved to shanghai and went to get my BB activated with a service plan. I was told to get a sim with a data plan first then sign up the BIS service online. I did what I was told but after 3 hours (that's how long they said it would take to work), it wasn't activated with BIS. I called CS. They said they already did what they were supposed to do, which was to activate APN. The only reason they could think of was that my IMSI# wasn't provided to the BIS group. Long story short, I got the ImSI, called BIS group and provided the info. After they fiddle around with it, they said it should work...obviously, it doesn't! They asked me to call CS again to double check if ApN was activated and it is.
Now they are investigating as to why it isn't working. I don't think thy have the slightest idea why it doesn't. I want to use my BB so if you guys have any suggestion, I would greatly appreciate it!
A little additional info: my BB worked when I was in hong kong. I manually input the APN setting in my berry. I also tried to register the Host Routing Table and it's still empty.

    shogun308 wrote:
My unit is not being sold in china at the moment. I will worry about that later once I can get on BIS.
That's actually my point. If the carrier does not directly support the specific model number of BB, then their system may not deliver to the BB the required Service Books in order for BIS to function. I have no way to know if your new carrier falls into this category or not.
    shogun308 wrote:
I used a PayGo plan while I was in hong kong. last I checked in hong kong, BIS wasn't active since I only purchased 1 mth of BIS service. However, the sim card/account still had credits on it so I could make phone calls. Would that be a problem? If so, how do I unregister it? Is this something I could do personally via RIM website or RIM tech support? Or is it something china Unicom can handle.
If this is causal (I cannot know for sure), then the place to accomplish the un-registring is the carrier that has it registered. RIM can do nothing since the carrier controls their own systems.
Before proceeding, please try this, with your new carriers SIM installed in the BB, and please first test that you can correctly use all of your voice-level services before doing the below steps:
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for an "Activation" or "Registration" message to arrive on your BB...there should be just one.
    2) Resend Service Books
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Please wait for one "activation" message for each configured email account (if any) to arrive on your BB.
If there are Service Books left over from your prior carrier, you may have to manually delete them. Sorry, I can't guide you in any greater detail as I've no idea what their SB's might look like...but, if you delete all SB's, then resending them should generate new and proper SBs from your new carrier.
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Good luck and let us know!

  • BES vs BES/BIS Service - Restrictions?

    Hi
I have a BB Curve 8900 and I have BIS service on it.  I have friends and colleagues who have BES service on their BB Bold 9700.  Company IT Policy restricts them from adding me on their BBM.  They receive my invite and accept it but it goes into the void.  I am also able to send them PIN msgs and they receive it but they can not reply to them.
My service provider provides a service called BES/BIS where both BES and BIS are provided.  I have taken this now and still have the same problem as before.  My question is, if my friends subscription is changed to BES/BIS will that allow them to communicate with me on the BBM through the BIS?
    Thanks.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Nope. The level of data plan that one has only defines the level of services that can be made available. With BES, if an IT Policy restricts some of those services (e.g., BBM and PIN messaging), then those services are simply not available on that BB. So, changing plans will have no effect on this service being blocked by the IT Policy for as long as that IT Policy exists on the BB.
    Good luck!

ALL pricing is a matter for the local carriers to set...BB does not force any pricing models onto the carriers, they decide for themselves what they will charge. In some markets, BIS has never cost more than a non-BIS data plan. In other markets, it has always commanded a premium price. Each market is different, and controlled not by BB, but by the local carriers.
    Cheers, and Good Luck!

  • Bringing BIS back to z10 possible ?

Hey all now I 've searched all over the internet to find any method to get BIS to work again as old devices but unfortunately its  gone !!  its really worth disappointing.
my question : Is there any way to bring it back by software update or something ? hope that blackberry find any solution for this
another question : now the Z10 APN default is BlackBerry10.net and the old APN is blackberry.net what is the difference ?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Again, you are asking for BlackBerry to give you BIS...when it's actually the carriers that control all services and pricing to their end users. Hence, your requests would be better directed toward them, I should think. If enough carriers pressure BlackBerry to enable an option of BIS-type services for BB10, then they might actually listen and do so. Just do still keep in mind that pricing will be 100% out of the control of BlackBerry...that is up to the carriers.
If BIS truly is a deal breaking requirement for you, then you should not even be on BB10...you should be on a legacy device, which continues to use BIS.

  • BIS for BB Z10

    Hello
I'm gonna buy  a BB Z10 as a gift but it's going to be used in Kosovo where network operators don't support Blackberry Internet Service(BIS). I've been told at carphone warehouse that it might not get connected to the mobile internet because of this.
Can anyone tell me if this phone can or can't get connected to mobile internet, cos if not then there is no point buying one.

    Hello lulichaki
BB 10 devices are using generic data plan. No need BIS or Blackberry data plan which that plans is for BB OS 7 or earlier models.
With generic data plan in Z10, you can browse Internet, bbm, email, whatsapp and others.

  • BIS Plan on Z10 (vodafone)

    Hello All,
I am new to BB z10. i want to know if this device support BIS Monthly plan of 399 from vodafone or not?
    Thanks
    Rajesh

On most carriers you can use a BIS plan if you already have one with your previous device however you won't get the compressed data that BIS offers.
So to explain it differently, a regular data plan is all you need but if you have BIS it should work on your Z10 (but it has been known to negatively affect the operation of some BB 10 phones so beware).
I hope that answers your question.

I was told that if I write here, someone will give me a link
to my providers setup for my wireless phone.  I use
ATT.  I have logged in there to their wireless setup and
it has been virtually useless in resolving my problem.
I even "chatted" with an ATT service person, who said
they could help me with none of my issues; that I must
go through Blackberry for my answers.

I really, really hate this Blackberry phone.
    It is terribly unnavigable.

First of all, do you have and pay for a 'BIS' plan on your service??

Do you see the BlackBerry logo?

  • Problem with Data or BIS services on Z3

Hi I have  got  a new  Z3 phone as a replacement for my old 9220. The same SIM works well for BES and Data /Internet on the 9220 but not on z3.  Checked with the carrier they plan is active and in new Z3 device it displays "e" only. Have been struggling to get this worked for last 10 days. No luck. Any suggestions please. Regards

It has been told me (see this post : Z10 without BIS just a kind of pale iPhone copy) BIS was not available for Z10 due to carrier request, thus I sent my Z10 back to my carrier and turn live my old 9860. One question remains: if carrier ask BBY to stop BIS service for Z10, why or when will they ask them to do the same for ALL bby ? Or the information I've got is just bull$ or one day or an other we all be catch in the trap ...
can someone confirm if this is true or not ?

  • Z10 on a normal data plan (not BIS)

After researching whether the Z10 operates on a normal data plan and not a BIS, and of course it worked perfectly on Wi-Fi without a SIM card, just wanted to make sure it is compatible with a normal cellular data plan, I went for it yesterday, and yes, everything worked except for BBM, heck the BlackBerry logo disappeared from the home screen. I contacted my carrier, and they shocked me, they told me it is not possible not to have a BIS with the Z10, and they were surprised I was able to browse the net and send/recieve emails, and they said they cannot support me!!
So why did I do this? A normal data plan is cheaper here in the UAE, my canceled BIS gave me 500Mb for 79AED, and the normal data plan gives me 1Gb for 50AED. Is there any workaround for this before I revert back?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hey ya3goub,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
BlackBerry 10 smartphones require a normal data plan from your network service provider.  However the network service provider must support BlackBerry 10, if not some BlackBerry services will not work.
Also BIS data plans are not available for BlackBerry 10 smartphones.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • Question about swapping SIM cards on a Z10

Hi, everyone, I am a non-Blackberry user who works in IT support.  One of my clients uses a Blackberry and has often asked me very complicated questions about how to do various unusual things with his device.  At the present time, he is considering switching to a Z10, which would be set up using ActiveSync.  He wants to know if he could swap the SIM card without having to go through the setup process again.   My client travels a lot, and wants to use a local SIM card on an upcoming trip to a very remote area.
I've not been able to find an answer to this anywhere.
This is his exact question: "I just got it from a friend (ATT version) and I am trying to see if I like it enough to switch to it as my primary phone.  Blackberry z10 asks you to sign in with your blackberry world ID when you first set up the phone.  Question: Would you have to do it again if you put a different simm into it?  With iPhone, it makes no difference so long as the device is unlocked—you can then exchange simm cards as often as you want.  Would it be the same with an unlocked blackberry z10 (I know it's not possible with the bold 9900 as System 7 ties your ID to the simm card).  In short, in blackberry z10, could you exchange the US simm for another country's simm without having to wipe the phone,  etc.  "
If anyone can shed some light on this for me, I'd be very grateful.,  Thanks!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    The key issues are thus:
Ensuring that the device is truly carrier unlocked
Ensuring that the specific device model is compatible with the radio frequencies/technologies that the desired carrier uses. There are 4 different Z10 models:
    http://www.bbin.in/en/2013/03/03/4-types-blackberry-z10-models-fits-better/?utm_campaign=4-types-of-...
If both of those are OK (separate research of the desired carriers would of course be necessary), then it is indeed a simple matter to change carriers. For example, I changed from ATT to TMO by simply changing the SIM...no need to WIPE or anything, and my same BBID came along just fine. You should, however, always obtain a properly-sized SIM card from the carrier -- there are plenty of reports of folks trying to use "cut" SIM cards and experiencing errors.
With BB10, it's actually simpler than with legacy BBs. Legacy BBs used the BIS service, which required receipt onto the device (from the carrier data network) of Service Books so as to activate the various services that the user subscribed to. When changing carriers, it often could be that a latent Service Book from the prior carrier causes issues when shifting to a different carrier...and that's where WIPING and such came into play, so as to cleanse the device so that the new carrier could deliver all of the proper Service Books to the device. With BB10, there is no BIS, and there are no Service Books...so all of that complication is eliminated.
    But, as always, YMMV.
    Good luck!
