Bit Of An Odd Question.

Hi Everyone, I have a bit of an odd question but my friend gave me his old version of photoshop cs5 with the product key i was wondering if i could register it under my name at all?

If that copy has been used in any upgrade path, then it is no longer valid.
Also, Adobe has paperwork, that must be filled out, to transfer ownership of valid licenses. I would have your friend complete that paperwork for the gifted copy. Adobe Customer Support can get them the necessary paperwork. Once, that transfer could be done via FAX, but not sure what the process might be now.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Bit of a strange question regarding security and internet connection

This is a bit of an odd question so bear with me for a moment.
I sold my old G4 to someone I didn't know yesterday. While he was looking at it to make sure it was working I allowed him to plug my ethernet cable in (connected to both a netgear router and a cable modem) and go online to install an application on the computer he was buying. It did't take long and I didn't actually see what he installed but after he left and I plugged back in to my mac pro, my internet connection started suffering. It started by being very slow and then timing out with servers. I reset the modem and even bypassed the router but the connection did not improve and eventually I could only get a self assigned IP address with no internet, although the modem appeared to be fine.
Aside from finding my I.P. address at my location, is there anything else he could have compomised security wise, either in the name of harvesting some kind of info or just creating a problem in the cable network when I let him use my connection on the g4?
I think that most likely I'm being a little paranoid but the timing of this is a bit strange. It literally went down hill just after he left.
Today the cable company is reporting a wider internet outage than just me but I just though I'd throw it out there to see if there are any security wholes exploitable when someone uses your internet connection (I would think and hope that there are not).
    thanks a bunch

Well, in the closing the stable door approach it is a good idea to do a complete erase and install when selling any computer. There's lots of references to this and even one about removing a certain file so when they start up they get the brand new Mac greeting window. If you do not erase the drive using the secure erase feature in Disk Utility then with an $80 investment plus an empty spare drive the purchaser can likely recover any files you had on the computer recently if they consider it worth the effort.
I suspect the internet issue is not related to this, especially since your ISP commented about problems.

  • Odd question

This is kind of an odd question.
We have a webcam that we would like to stream video to.  We have the wiring in, and it runs into our network.  The problem is that the network is rather complicated and for some reason the signal from the web camera is getting lost. We need to know if it is an issue with the camera itself or with the network.
And I was thinking to myself, here we also have this verizon netbook with mobile broadband.  If I could plug the webcam / ethernet system into the netbook and could get an internet signal, then I would know the problems we are having are an issue with the network and not the camera.  At which point the solution would be to just get a second independent fios line.
So the question is this... is there any way to treat the netbook kind of like a router.  Plug an ethernet cable in, install some software, forward a couple of ports and that is pretty much it.  It really doesn't matter if it runs slow or not, because this is just about testing some systems.
    Thanks

Using the netbook for the configuration you are requesting is not supported. Only hotspot devices support a similar setup to a router. Examples of these devices would be the following:
    HTC Droid Incredible
    Motorola Droid 2
    Motorola Droid R2D2
    Motorola Droid X
    Palm Pixi
    Palm Pre
    Samsung Fascinate
    MiFi 2200 Intelligent Hotspot

  • Odd question: retrieving a serial number

This is an odd question, and I can't find anywhere appropriate to ask it. Is there any way I can look up the Apple products that are registered to me? I had a MacBook stolen last week, and I need the serial number to report to the police on the odd chance that they find it. I can't seem to find the serial number anywhere in my files. Can I get that info from Apple? If so, how?

Try calling Apple for that info. I don't know of any place on their website that you can retrieve that information.

  • Bit of an odd upgrade question (not iPhone related I swear!).

Alright, so here is the situation. I will be the first to say I suck at figuring out the hows and whys of these things. I am hoping some of you are Verizon gurus and can explain this all to me.
Right now I am rocking an HTC Touch Pro 2, nifty phone, for its time it was a beast, lost its edge to the Droid behemoth these days though. Anyways I am looking to upgrade. I was mulling around the idea of an iPhone but have decided against it. I did however go to the page and plugged in the information to buy an iPhone, despite my new every two/upgrade period still being six months away it said my line was eligible for an upgrade and was going to give me the promo price of $199/299 to get locked into another two year contract. I also recall recieving a text a while back saying I could do the same thing for the Droid X.
My question is, is this promotion limited to certain phones? I really have my eye set on the Thunderbolt and I am wondering if when that phone hits it will let me lock myself into a new 2 year contract for the promo price of that phone like it would have the Droid X and iPhone.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Sounds like you ARE eligible for your annual upgrade (are you the primary, or only line on the account? IS you base plan $49.99 or more per month?)
You can get the 2 yr promo pricing on a new phone, you lose any additional $30 or $50 credit you may be eligible for, and there is a $20 upgrade fee. For some, it's worth that to get the early upgrade at 12 months rather than 20 months on a 2 year contract.

  • Bit of an odd RAM question...

So, on one of my Mac Pro's, (first-gen), I was replacing the PC2-5300 DIMMs with some new pieces, and I came across something I'd never seen before.
The stock modules, (512 DIMMs), had a very thin layer of, what seemed to be, oil between the actual RAM board and the external heatsinks. All four had this, and it all seemed to be the same amount in the same locations.
I checked the system, and everything else was normal. Did Apple add some sort of oil-based coolant to these DIMMs? I've never seen anything like that before, if they have.
    Thanks everyone!

laughs I wish I could get some of that quantum lubricant for my car.

  • A very odd question about accessing cube via HTTP PUMP

    hi there:
Everything was fine a couple of days ago when I used excel to connect to cube. Today, when I use excel -> from Other sources, I can select the AS database but can not see the cube at all... The odd thing is that if I choose to use Existing Connections
which contains the connection to the CUBE before, after put my user id and password, I am able to connect and navigate cube data.
There is a role for the AS database and myself has been granted as Full control ( administrator).  I've also switched to SSMS and access cube over there directly, no issues at all.
Question: why excel is not allowing me to see the list of cubes for an AS database???
    Thanks

    Hello,
How have you setup permissions for the HTPP access. If e.g. IIS and SSAS running on different machines, the permissions settings are a little bit difficult. So may a different user is used and that one may don't have permissions to access the cube.

  • SLES10 SP4/OES2 SP3 32 bit Clean Install - Basic Questions

    Hi everyone.
I am now an expert in installing the above software and ending up with a server which does not work as we require. Must be something I am doing wrong. Hope someone can spot it.
Have installed and supported Netware servers for 25 years without major problems. Decided now to move to SLES because Novell say we should and we need Groupwise 12 to replace GroupWise 8.
The operational environment we are targeting is an 80 user edirectory/NDS based single tree, single context containing two Netware 6.5 SP8 HP Proliant servers running uncomplicated file and print services , NSS volumes, Groupwise 8, DHCP, ifolder, Quickfinder and the like, spread across the two servers. It all works a treat. Client PCs are are all XP Pro with Novell client software.
The idea would be to replace one of the two Netware servers first with a SLES/OES server and then the second Netware server with a second SLES/OES server and move GroupWise functionality to one of the SLES/OES servers. Ideally users would continue to log on using their eDirectory accounts without noticing anything was going on in the background.
The test environment we have set up is a 5 user NDS/eDirectory single tree, single context already containing a single Netware 6.5 SP8 Proliant server running file and print, NSS volumes etc and Groupwise 8. Into this tree we are trying to install a 32 bit server with a empty 36 GB SCSI disc running SLES 10 SP4 with OES2 DP3 as an add in, with NSS data volumes.
Because it only takes a few hours to do we have repeatedly run the SLES 10/OES2 install (probably about 9 times!) with minor variations to see whether we can end up with a properly configured SLES/OES server but there is always one problem or another.
The major problem we have is how to configure NSS data volumes on the SLES server and how to allow users to be validated against their eDirectory entries and knowing whether the test server is 'good to go'.
The process we followed for each test install, after checking edirectory was clean and removing any entries placed in the tree by earlier attempts to install the SLES server in the same tree were:
    1. Boot the SLES 10 SP4 32 DVD (downloaded ISO and burnt DVD) and selected Installation.
    2. Followed the prompts on time zone and language etc and selected i386 OES CD (also downloaded ISO and burnt) as the Software Add-In.
    3. Loaded SLES DVD and OES CD as and when requested
    4. At the Partitioning stage we selected the EVMS proposal, and at the Software selection stage selected the base software, file server Role, Documentation, DHCP, eDirectory, iFolder, iPrint, Quickfinder, NSS and LDAP.
    5. Miscellaneous errors would appear or not appear during the eDirectory stage (eg LUM error, or iFolder error) but the eDirectory stage would still seem to complete OK and get ticked.
    6. The system would then reboot and appear to come up OK.
HOWEVER, we are not convinced we have created a fully working reliable server.
    and
SPECIFICALLY we are unable to create NSS volumes and we cannot logon users via their eDirectory accounts.
NSSMU shows a single device sda (33.92 Gb) and three partitions sda1 (70Mb), sda2 (31.91GB), and sda3 (1.94GB). sda2 seems to contain all the 'spare' space on the disk (type Linux LVM) but says there is no spare space to create our NSS partitions.
iManager cannot see any devices to configure NSS data volumes on the SLES server but it connects OK
NSSCON status seems to show NSS to be running
    EVMSGUI shows /dev/evms/lvm2/system/ro at 10 Gb, /dev/evms/lvm2/system/sw at 2GB and /dev/evms/sda1 at 70 Mb
    So my questions are:
    Does the above look right?
Why cannot we get at the spare disk space to set up NSS volumes? Did the EVMS proposal grab it all and if so how do we get it back?
Did not selecting the EVMS partitioning proposal do everything needed to run NSS?
[There seems to be some suggestion in the several hundred pages of SLES, OES and NSS Guides, Installation manuals, Configuration manuals etc that we have studied over several days, that we now have to edit a fstab file to make it work properly (Really? in this day and age where clicking on Setup.Exe will configure a fully working Windows server) Is that so? Is there anything else we need to do?]
How do we get the users to access their NDS accounts to log into SLES and Netware?
How do we know the server is OK for operaational use and 'works' ?
    HELP!!!

You are partially correct. Admins who used NSS on NetWare likely did
install NSS on OES Linux but I suspect they used a separate drive for
NSS either by installing an additional drive, by carving out a chunk of
space on their RAID array and assigning it to a separate LUN, or by
running OES in a VM where storage space on a single disk/array can
    appear as separate drives.

    Semantics!
    IDEAL = Recommended; EVMS != IDEAL; EVMS != Recommended;
IMO, Novell recognised that they had to provide a way for customers to
install NSS on a system that only had a single disk and provided this
procedure as a workaround. By the way, they also support 2-node
clusters but they aren't recommended either. I have also seen cases
where a supported configuration was deemed no longer to be supported as
NTS became aware of additional complications.
My point (and Simon's and ab/Aaron's) is this: Just because it is
supported doesn't mean you should do it. If we can agree on this point,
I'll try to help you to get it working. The last thing I want to do is
give others the impression that by helping you find a solution we think
    this is a good idea!!!

Yes, NSS requires the volume manager to be EVMS and not LVM!

But you have not left *any* unpartitioned free space!

Let's look at the default proposal. This is *not* what you have.

A single (SATA/SAS/SCSI) drive will be known as sda (/dev/sda).
/dev/sda1 is the first partition. In the example and in your
configuration this is the /boot partition. In both cases it is 70.5 MB.
/dev/sda2 is the second partition. The partition uses LVM so logical
volumes of various sizes can be created within the partition. The total
size of all logical volumes cannot be larger than the size of the
    partition.
    In the above example:
    /root is 10.0 GB and swap is 1.1 GB. This leaves: 14.9 - (10.0 + 1.1) =
3.8 GB of additional space within /sda2 which can be used to create
    additional logical volumes. Furthermore sda1 + sda2 use only ~ 15 GB.
Only 15 GB of the disk has been allocated. The remainder of the disk is
*unallocated* and *unpartitioned*. Presumably, it was left that way so
that the space could be used for NSS.
In your case: sda2 is 31.91 GB
This does not follow the Default EVMS Proposal for Devices over 20 GB
in Size. Either YaST did not allocate space according to the default
proposal or you changed it. Either way, sda2 (+sda3) consume *all* of
the available disk space. It is no wonder that there is no space
    available for NSS!
    > What do you reckon???
I reckon that something went wrong along the way. If you did not
specifically change the default allocation yourself, then consider this
one example of kinds the things that can happen when one tries to
exploit seldom used, but supported, features!
It looks like it is time for yet another installation. This time, make
sure you leave enough unpartitioned space on the drive for NSS and let
me know how you make out.

  • Odd Question - Temperature Tolerance of W530/Bedbug Removal

    Hi all,
I've owned a W530 for more than a year. I can include more detailed specs if necessary, but for now it has a Samsung 840 250GB HDD and 32GB of RAM. Currently there is the HDD that shipped with the W530 in the ultrabay.
I've followed this forum for some time now - I have two much older thinkpads, a T60 and a z60m as well. The advice here has been extraordinarily helpful time and time again. It's truly a wonderful resource.
    So my question:
I live adjacent to an apartment which has recently been confirmed to have bedbugs. Mine has been inspected, and found clean. However, the other day I found a dead bedbug and my girlfriend has some suspicious looking bites. Given this set of circumstances, I am assuming we have some.
I've made arrangements to stay elsewhere, and have undertaken a laborious process of ensuring that all items taken will not have any unwelcome travelers.
However I am at a loss as to how to ensure that the laptop is not carrying anything. Heat greater than 120 degrees F, sustained for a period of time, will kill any bedbugs or eggs (it's how we ensure that the clothes being taken will be clean).
If turned off, can the W530 be exposed to such temperatures (possibly up to 140) without damage? If not, are there any other suggestions?
Thanks again for any help anyone is able to provide.
    Solved!

  • WINDOWS 7 64 BITS OEM LICENSE LANGUAGE QUESTION

    Hello to all,
My company have bought some HP desktops without any OS. This was because we have some OEM licenses for windows 7 professional 64 bits that we bought for a virtualization project that did not suceed and the licenses were never used.
We want to install those OEM licenses in the desktops but we found that the dvd that came with each license as the OS in Portuguese and we would like to install the OS in english.Since we do not want
to take any chance and not be 100% legal with Microsoft my first question is if we can use on those desktops the OEM license for windows 7 professional 64 bits Portuguese language that we have but have the desktops with windows 7 professional 64 bits English
language OS.That takes me to the second question that is if we can use one windows 7 professional 64 bits english dvd to setup the desktops.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Best Rgs,
    Ricardo Mendes

    Hi,
As far as I know, in windows 7, only the Ultimate and Enterprise are support multiple language.
Windows 7 language packs are available for computers that are running Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972813
And if you want to use OEM license, you need the OEM disk from the manufacturer to install windows.

  • Odd question about transferring.

Ok, about 2 months ago I had no problems moving my iTunes library from my old computer to my new one. So with that bravery I just tried moving iTunes and my library from where it had been to a new bigger drive, and I ended up losing huge chunks of my library. Now, my question is, I still have what I had previously sync'd onto my Pod, is there any way to transfer what is in my iPod "into" iTunes?? Otherwise, I'm going to end up losing a whole day re-importing my CD's back into my library, not to mention lose what I had purchased from my iPod. I had just purchased 2 new TV episodes but in order to get them onto my Pod, I have to sync, and if I do that I'll lose what I have there. Help!!!

*is there any way to transfer what is in my iPod "into" iTunes??*
The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
One last thing if your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an iTunes with a different content. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7.3 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever retrieval method you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Odd questions re: timecode generator

    Hello
I have a rather weird question concerning a workflow that im sure most on this forum do NOT use.
I have an edit consisting of animated qt .movs, 1280x720 @ 24fps, with NONE compression. Hefty, lossless files. There is also audio, though this is inconsequential to my predicament.
This edit needs to go out to someone @ 720x480, letterboxed with running timecode on the bottom bar. It needs to be compressed to a QT .mov with MotionJPEGA compression.
So, heres my current method, used many times, but highly quirky and VERY slow.
First I take my 1280x720 footage into a 720x480 sequence @ 24fps with mojpegA compression, obviously causing all to need rendering down. On top of that, I put color bars (black), cropped to the correct size, to letterbox the animations at the top and bottom of the frame. Then on the lower letterbox bar, I apply a timecode generator filter.
The problem comes here. With the filter applied, I then stretch out the clip its applied to, in a track over top of my animations to the end of the sequence (like 17 minutes long). Then everything gets rendered down (over the period of like 3-5 hours) and we have a clean, 720x480, letterboxed and timecoded sequence. Fantastic, right? Well, inevitably, a change will be made prior to export and a single couple of seconds will need to be updated under the bars and generator. As soon as anything under those tracks is adjusted, WHAMO, it needs rendering again, for the ENTIRE sequence.
is there a way to go about avoiding this gigantic hurdle? I need the ability to make changes to individual sections of a large, rendered sequence, without needing a full, fresh, and extremely lengthy render-down.
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    matt
    mac g5

It's the code generator that's doing you in. Is there any way to avoid applying it until you know there are no more changes? Or working in shorter sections?
I can only guess that you're off-lining something for conform later, or prepping for a composer, or whatever.
Aside from maxing out the ram in your machine, I don't see a way to speed up your process; but what if you change your process somehow? For example, open the clips in qt, export as dv in your codec and put THOSE in your timeline?
    This might shorten your render.
You might also consider pushing back a little bit with the others involved in the production with you and all sit down and figure out another better way to do what you need.
    This probably isn't much help...

  • 32 bit or 64 bit - that is the question ..

Im planning to install windows 7 on my macbook but I do not know if I should have 32 or 64 bit version of Windows.
    I have a 2.9 Ghz Inteel core i7
I might use Boot Camp or Parallels.
Thanks for any input to my question.

Always use a 64-bit Windows 7 or 8 version, unless you need to run an application that does not work in a 64-bit Windows edition.
A 64-bit version works better with new Macs, so you can use all the processor and all the RAM, getting better performance and allowing you to run more apps at the same time.
If you are not sure whether you want to install Windows in Parallels or Boot Camp, see > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321

  • Blu-Ray bit rate (and other questions)

Hi, just getting ready to try out my new blu-ray burner and I had a couple quick questions regarding outputting via compressor, thanks for any help and advice:
    1) What's the recommended average and max bit rate assuming file size isn't an issue?
    2) Can I put multiple videos on one blu-ray? From what I can tell it's only one per disk...
    3) The blu-ray template wants audio and video from one source, correct? Or can I drop in a quicktime video and a separate audio track? (For instance, I have a surround sound mix that was done elsewhere while the video was edited and output from an Avid)
    4) Will compressor accept Avid DnxHD quicktimes?

I assume you mean to create a BD with Compressor.
    1. 34mbps, if I remember, is the max. Just let Compressor calculate the average and max. With a good source, an average above 24mbps won't make a difference of quality, in my opinion.
    2. No; you have to have a single movie all assembled in FCP first. But you can use chapter makers to mark multiple original movies.
    3. One source only, correct.
    4. I don't know.
