Bit off topic: Storyboarding

Hey guys
What app are you using to create storyboards? Googling the idea just returns a bunch of terrible looking apps that seem just Windows based.
I can draw my own panels, then retouch in photoshop and layout the boards with InDesign, but its not ideal (just reordering scenes is a bit of a pain)
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Fede

Wouldn't hurt if the folks of this thread commented also over on the "Story" Adobe board ... trying to get somethint better out of them for us.
I did talk with one of the Story people at NAB ... he explained that Story was actually (in application) pretty much designed to fit the needs of a major cable/sat news network, and they hadn't really put that much thought into the program past that. On listening to what I wanted to be able to use it for, which is to help design my short little interview projects and web-'mercials and such, he thought for a moment, and did say that there was probably use for this with more people than they had thought there would be ... that the current limitations might largely be from a lack of imagination on their own part, as far as envisioning an actual current market that would be available to them.
It was very clear that the resources would be available only as the upper management saw an immediately approachable market.
While we were chatting, a "Sr. Manager" by badge came over to join the conversation, and we re-capped the previous comments including the Story dude's comment. The "Sr. Manager" nodded thoughtfully, and admitted that at his level they hadn't really put any thought into Story as more of a wide-use program ... period. It was pretty much thought of as for X client ... and even he admitted that on continued thinking, that is probably less than optimal on Adobe's part.
Not that he was committing any more resources to it, mind you ... sigh ...

  • A bit off topic, but what time should I arrive at the Keynote?

I'm posting this in the FCP forum because this is the only one I read. I'm attending Macworld for the first time and I have the cheap tickets for the Keynote (user's conference). I have no idea how early I need to show up to wait in line to guarantee I get into the Keynote.
Thanks and sorry for the off topic post.

Just showing a pick of what I look like...hee.
I will have an exhibitors pass, so I wonder if I can get in any later and still get good seats? HA! I will bring my lappy, to keep me occupied (I hope they have wireless access).
For iChat reports I'd need all your iChat accounts. That would be one BIG group chat.

  • A bit off topic but you have been so brilliant here before!!:))

Trying to get to a quick answer and without going into lots of detail on Network Infrastructure etc etc I am helping a charity and they have just put in a couple of new lasers so .......what might be the reason for an HP Laserjet P1505N (networked) printing a standard MS Word text document as garbage characters (mainly extended ascii)? BUT if the text is formatted to a colour however (I've been using dark red!) it prints correctly.
    Graphics (bitmaps) print OK
USB (direct PC to printer connection works fine)
So in other words down the network colour text or graphics is OK but normal black text documents are not.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated, I assume some kind of driver mix up but because of the strange workaround I thought the exact cause might ring some bells with someone (seems like a bit or a byte has lost the plot somewhere along the line (127..256 7,8 bits ascii tables etc etc)). I'm no network expert and I stopped using PC's at home about 7 months ago..........(after 20 years of very educational WAR!!!)
    Thanks for any help....rob

If the configuration you posted is correct, I seriously doubt that anyone here will be able to give you any feedback (we are Apple people, after all).
I suggest you contact HP and ask them the question.

  • A Bit Off Topic, But Can the HP Photosmart C3140 Be Shared Over a Network?

I was going to get a MacBook and since I need a new printer, this one looks good since it would be free (after the $100 rebate).
However, I've had trouble sharing HP printers over a network in the past. Would this one give me any problems. Also, if it's connected to a Windows computer, would it make a difference?

    Hey Large,
Some printers don't support network printing because of driver issues and what not, but the C3140 should work just fine.
As for your windows question. I have found it easier to print from a mac, over a network to a PC, than the other way around.
Also don't be afraid to call apple tech support when you get your macbook. They will walk you through the networking process and answer any questions you might have. It's free for 90 days so use it.
    Good luck

  • A bit off topic, but not too far

due to the lack of an autodownload for JRE 1.4 I am forced to use another method for installing it. Does anyone know a way to check what JRE version the user has using some sort of web scripting? I've seen examples of how to check within an applet or application - but I don't really want to do that.
    matt

due to the lack of an autodownload for JRE 1.4 I am
forced to use another method for installing it. Does
anyone know a way to check what JRE version the user
has using some sort of web scripting? Looking at Sun's download pages for the JRE, I can't see that kind of JRE identification, and those guys should know how to do it.
It makes sense, because if it existed, it means that it is possible by a web site to spy your system.
What is possible to have some applets running on a page, and a submit button next to where the user can answer the question, if the applet is running properly. E.g. put up an 1.3 applet with some animation and an 1.4 applet with an animation. The let the user hit that submit button where the animation plays properly.
This way the user discloses the information to your site, that's technical possible and ok. Spying is not.
I'm not sure how the latest installers by Sun work, might be some active X based spying installer, which reports the proper config. :-)

  • Using Ola's scripts..... (a bit off topic)

    I just installed Ola's scripts.
    1. On his site is this example:
    >>>>>>
    EXECUTE dbo.IndexOptimize @Databases = 'USER_DATABASES',
     @FragmentationLow = NULL,
     @FragmentationMedium = 'INDEX_REORGANIZE,INDEX_REBUILD_ONLINE,INDEX_REBUILD_OFFLINE',
     @FragmentationHigh = 'INDEX_REBUILD_ONLINE,INDEX_REBUILD_OFFLINE',
     @FragmentationLevel1 = 5,
     @FragmentationLevel2 = 30,
     @WaitAtLowPriorityMaxDuration = 1,
     @WaitAtLowPriorityAbortAfterWait = 'NONE'
    >>>>>>
I presume this is running the script manually.
    2. Under Sql Agent I also found this in the IndexOptimize scheduled job:
    >>>>
    sqlcmd -E -S $(ESCAPE_SQUOTE(SRVR)) -d MyUtiDBl -Q "EXECUTE [dbo].[IndexOptimize] @Databases = 'USER_DATABASES', @LogToTable = 'Y'" -b
    >>>>
I guess the scheduled job is a template which I can update to include many of the parameters show in point 1).
    A. Is that the correct idea?
    B. If so, what parameters do you include other than those shown in 1)?
    C. It appears that I can delete
any of the Jobs created that I don't want to use. Right?
    D. In the past I ran the rebuild index\ update stats jobs nightly. Seems that most folks on the Internet run those jobs only once a week.  How often do you run them?
    TIA,
    edm2

    Hi,
If I think correctly, you have downloaded MaintenanceSolution.sql from Ola’s site. This script creates all the objects and jobs. It creates four stored procedures. It is fine to delete the job which you don’t need.
You can download separate scripts from the below site:
    http://ola.hallengren.com/downloads.html
IndexOptimize.sql: Stored procedure to rebuild and reorganize indexes and update statistics
    Thanks.

CCVS from Red Hat (http://www.redhat.com/products/ccvs/) has a Java api.
We use CCVS but not the Java api so I can't comment on it.

  • Slightly off topic: Read-only tables pre 11g

    Hi gang
I'm just writing up a database quiz for a local user group and I was hoping I could get a bit of inspiration from the database experts.
One of the questions will be "prior to 11g with the introduction of read-only tables, how could you make a table read-only?". The answers I've come up with:
    1) Security priviliges (schema + grant SELECT)
    2) Triggers
    3) Create a check constraint with disable validate
    4) Read-only tablespace
    5) Read-only database (standby)
    6) (Slightly crazy) Create view, and instead-of triggers that do nothing (similar to 2)
    7) Write the query results on a piece of paper and then turn the database off
Anybody have any other answers, real or slightly off topic like mine please? ;)
    Cheers,
    CM.

Check constraint and trigger solutions may have problems with sqlldr direct path operations, so using it together with alter table disable lock may be mandatory depending on the needs. Especially if DDLs are also wanted to be avoided.
This topic was once mentioned on Tom Kyte's blog or asktom but I couldn't find the source to link here.

  • Will people stumble across off topic posts on a blog?

In Summary my question is this: Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across off topic posts?
Let's say I have my website with a specific subject as far as domain and title and content are concerned.
    I.E: John's Tech Blog at techblogger.com
The content is pretty much all about tech stuff.
But then I see a film I like and want to review it...and put a review on there.
    OR
I want to discuss something I find interesting on the Psychology Today website (something less mainstream).
Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across either of these or similar?
I know a bit about SEO, and know...basically the more I mention something (keyword-wise) the better. Aswell as density, proximity etc of course.
Now, because 'movie' and 'review' and the title of the movie are only mentioned in close proximity on that one page...does this mean nobody will find it?
Let's also assume I re-post these posts on 5 other article sites linking back.
So basically again: Have I ANY chance of people stumbling across off topic posts?

Most likely not to many, of course you will get a little google juice from the link.

  • MQ, eSQL and CLOBs (Off Topic)

    Hi,
Apologies for this way off topic post, but I figured someone here may know the answer to this one and save me some time digging / testing.
We're designing a middleware hub using WBIMB (MQ) v5 and have the option of
    a. Sending a message to a JMS Listener that will write an entry in a database via JDBC
    b. Having the broker flow insert the record using a compute node / java node.
If we choose option b my preference would be to use eSQL, but the database table has a CLOB column and I'm not sure whether this is supported.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help,
    Steve

Hello Huffer Many thanks for your prompt reply. I have been doing a bit more research and came across an old spec for a "lenovo" hard-disk (HDD) with 320GB capacity used in numerous ThinkPads. Unfortunately it does not include the X300 model that i have. The full details can be found HERE. The height of the HDD is 7 (SEVEN) mm. I may be paranoid but can you please just confirm that the lenovo X300 ThinkPads (see full details above) with the 320GB HDD really have a height of 9.5mm and so will be able to take the HDD 2.5" with 2TB that I plan to buy. If the height really is only 7m then I have a problem.  Then I think that i will have to go up my idea of increasing the storage space. If you cannot answer the question with 100% certitude then I will have to reopen the laptop and measure the space available but that is a pain since I am new to all this and afraid of damaging the HDD. Thanks. Cheers. Steve.

  • VirtualBox - somewhat off-topic

I know this is somewhat off-topic, but I'm hoping there's some expertise here that will be a bit more helpful than when I asked this on the VirtualBox forums.
For a coupe of years now I've been running my own private test lab on my laptop, using VMworkstation. It's been working to my satisfaction, but with all the recommendations to use VirtualBox (after all, it's free) I thought I'd give it a try. This was a few months back, and I ran into a real problem with the way VB appears to handle networking vs. VMware.
With VMware, I set all my virtual machines to use NAT. This allows me to give the vm a fixed IP address, not reveal itself outside the host OS, and still reach the internet for things like yum updates. Obviousely, bridged network would allow me to access the inernet, but would make me have to play by the rules of whatever network I'm on -- my company or my home ISP. Host only would address that but not allow me to pull updates from the internet.
Now, with VirtualBox, I couldn't get NAT to work with a fixed IP address that I assigned to the vm. The guys at the VB forum couldn't seem to understand why that was an issue. They just kept saying to allow the vm to use a DHCP assigned address and 'everything just works'.
I don't have VB installed at the moment, so can't re-run tests, but thought I'd throw this out to see if it rings a bell with anyone, and if so if there might be a solution. I still tend to believe VB will do a fixed guest IP with NAT and I just wasn't seeing how to make it work, but perhaps not.
    Comments?

So x is 2 when there is only one NAT instance active. In that case the guest is assigned to the address 10.0.2.15, the gateway is set to 10.0.2.2 and the name server can be found at 10.0.2.3.
If, for any reason, the NAT network needs to be changed, this can be achieved with the following command:
VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natnet1 "192.168/16"
This command would reserve the network addresses from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.254.254 for the first NAT network instance of "VM name". The guest IP would be assigned to 192.168.0.15 and the default gateway could be found at 192.168.0.2.
I suggest to review the documentation for more details

Sorry for the delayed response. I've just now re-installed VBox and created a 64-bit Oracle Linux 5.7 machine.
After reading yet again the networking chapter in the VBox user manual, I'm afraid I'm just as confused as ever. Perhaps if I detail exactly how I'm used to setting things up with VMware and the resulting behavior, we can see the corollary for VBox.
When I install VMware, it creates two network adapters on the host OS, vmnet1 and vmnet8. vmnet8 is used for NAT. I've installed on several machines and vmnet8 is always assigned an address of 192.168.something.1. The 'something' seems to vary from install to install. I'm not sure what controls the assigned value there, but have never really needed to explore that. My current setup is at 192.168.111.1.
Next, I create a virtual machine. There I configure eth0 to use a fixed IP address of 192.168.xxx.yyy, where 'xxx' matches the value of the vmnet8 adapter on the host os, and 'yyy' is assigned sequentially, starting with 101 for the first machine I create, 102 for the next, etc. When creating these machines, I've found I have to set the gateway and DNS address to 192.168.xxx.2.
    With that setup,
    - my guest vm can ping the host
    - the host can ping the guest vm
    - I can create an entry in the host os's 'hosts' file pointing to the guest vm (ie: 192.168.111.101 vmlnxsrv01.vmdomain vmlnsxrv01), then use that name to refer to the vm
    - I can use an ssh client like putty (on the host os) to connect to the vm, exactly like I would connect to a remote box on my company's network
    - The vm can reach the internet to do web browsing, download rpms, etc.
Now, when i installedVbox, it created one additional network adapter on the host os. It is running at 192.168.56.1
I created the virtual machine, giving it a fixed IP address of 192.168.56.111, gateway and dns address of 192.168.56.2
Ping of the vm ip address from the host returns 'host unreachable' doesn't work either direction
    C:\Users\ed>ping 192.168.56.111
Pinging 192.168.56.111 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.56.1: Destination host unreachable.
    Ping statistics for 192.168.56.111:
        Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
    Control-C
^CSame from the other end, pinging 192.168.56.1 and 192.168.56.2 from the vm
Tried the vboxmanage, but not sure if I gave it the correct parameters.
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>vboxmanage modifyvm "lnxsrv11" --natpf1 "gue
    tssh,tcp,,2222,192.168.56.111,22"
    C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox>ping 192.168.56.111
Pinging 192.168.56.111 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.56.1: Destination host unreachable. Also at this point, an attempt to establish a putty session to 192.168.56.111 times out.

  • Forum Atom feed and the Off-Topic forum

I'm subscribed via https://bbs.archlinux.org/extern.php?ac … der=posted and I've just noticed I don't get any notification if a new thread gets opened in Off-Topic forum. I haven't yet checked if any other forum is also excluded.
I know that I can subscribe to this forum via 'Subscribe to this forum' but according to http://projects.archlinux.org/vhosts/bb … extern.php the default feed shouldn't miss any subforums, as there are no nfids mentioned.
    What am I missing?

As I recall off-topic, dustbin, and TGN are log-in so that moderation there can be slightly more lenient, since its guaranteed its only our community in the place (no lurkers)? Not part of the 'main' forums in that sense, then.
EDIT: lurkers and/or bots, which is the main point.
This is correct. We don't want someone to type "Arch Linux" in a search engine and to get, as the first link, an off-topic forum thread about some random absurdities or some TGN rant.  The same goes with someone visiting the forum to see what kind of community Arch Linux has before installing it. It's a question of giving a good first impression while still being able to have a good time.

  • Somewhat off topic, wedding lighting and wireless lav. question

Hello everyone! This question is slightly off topic, but I'm desperate for an answer. I've been doing wedding videos for some time now and it's time to upgrade my setup. I'm currently in the market for a good, reliable wireless lavaliere mic, and a good quality on camera light. I use a panasonic DVX100b for all of my footage. For the light I'd like to spend about $400.00 ish or less, but I will spend more if the price jump dramatically increases the performance. I also have about $600 to spend on a wireless lav. system, again I will pay more if the jump in price brings a considerable jump in quality. Can anyone make any recommendations?
    Thanks

Gotta go with the Sennheiser Evolution series as well. Although I can't say that the actual mics they ships with are the best, they're not bad and I've had very few issues with the range and reception.
And if you're shooting solo, aside from the mics, make sure you pick up a 2 or 3 foot XLR cable so that you have enough hose to allow you to hook the receiver on to your belt. Beats clipping it to the handle strap.
You can also get a little adapter for the DVX that will allow you to mount the mics on the camera hot shoe on the top of the handle. I'm sure you can get these for just about and wireless you buy.
