Bit rates in Compressor using H264

I have an HD media player that can only handle files up to 4GB (fat32). I need to compress 30 minutes of 1080P HD footage to around 3.6 GB. The problem I keep running into is the complex footage in the finished video.
I'm trying to create a H264 file with a variable bit rate and a maximum bit rate, does anyone know how to do this using compressor?

Thanks Thomas, I'm working with Jeff on this project. With your settings it does't quite work, The Data Rate is not really a peak constrained VBR, but its more of an average bit-rate. I've tried setting the Data Rate to 16000 kbits/s, but I'm not getting the quality output I need for some scenes.
Some scenes don't need more the 8000 kbits/s but others need more like 25,000 kbits/s. With the Automatic VBR I'm getting a mostly what I need, except one scene want to peak at 80,000 kbits/s. The player is limited to 30,000 kbits/s. Also like Jeff stated before the file size of the video must be less than 4GB so it will fit on CF card formatted at FAT32.
I need to be able to set a Average bit rate at around 15,000 kbits/s, with a Max peak at 28,000 kbits/s. Any one with ideas on how to do that?
To put this simply, we need the best possible quality with these specs.
*Codec: H.264*
*File size: <4GB*
*Average bit rate: 15,000 kbits/s*
*Max bit rate: 28,000 kbits/s*
Thanks

  • Compressor bit rate question

I put together a 28 minute bike video and I am having some dvd playback issuses (for some dvd players, not all). For some reason the video pauses and skips in the middle of the video. Is there a recommended bit rate to export using compressor? I just export with the default setting on 120 min, 4.0 - 7.5 bit rate at best quality. I read somewhere you take a risk if your bit rate is over 7.0. Any thoughts?

When we first started supplying DVDs to the public we had quite a few issues with some dvds not being compatible. It was never very logical but the rule was that the more expensive the machine the more likely it would not play. In fact some clients actually prefaced their enquiry with the words "I am afraid it was a very expensive machine and we have been told it can be a problem"! Often also they were Sonys.
However I have to say that we have not had this problem for a couple of years now and had just assumed that everything is much more compatible now. Many people who watch Hollywood movies only, do sometimes get problems when they try to watch a copied movie for the first time - remember the process is different (and also that they do damage a little more easily than the pressed ones). It is always hard to convince someone who has watched movies without problem that it may be their machine. Nine times out of ten they would send them back and they played ok on numerous machines back here and we would send them another and it would be fine. Who said this was a science?? Your only other alternative might be to play out into a stand alone recorder and try that but you will lose your menu structure.

    Hi,
I have exported two 10 minute HDV movies as mpeg2 files, using Compressor, with the default bit rate setting of 6.2/7.7 mbps. When I try to burn a DVD, I get the "bit rate too high error message". I've used the same settings for these files before, and no problem. However, after I made minor changes to these files in FCP, and then tried to export - no luck. Should I try to export reducing the bit rate in Compressor?
    Janis

A data rate of 160 or 192 is usually good, you should set Dialog Normalization to -31, preprocessing to none and dechecking Copyright Exists and Content is Original also helps prevent glitches (I had that drilled in my head awhile ago, like in DVD SP 1 time and sort of just follow it as a matter of course, pretty sure it still holds true through DVD SP 4 and Compressor 2, at least it has for me.)

  • IDVD 4 Best Performance bit rate

I've read on these forums that using best performance, iDVD encodes video at a 7.3Mbps bit rate.
Is that including audio, or is that just video?
    In other words is it 7.3 + 1.5 (audio) = 8.8 Mbps?
    or is it
    5.8 + 1.5 (audio) = 7.3 Mbps?
    Thanks!

where did you get that information about the 7.3 bit rate?
I used the Bitrate Viewer ($0 or $30, it runs OK in Virtual PC) for the ~7404 kb/s = 7.2 Mb/s value (that was the average from 15, 30 and 60 minute content lengths but the original values were very near each other).
    http://www.tecoltd.com/bitratev.htm
I got the 7.3 Mb/s value by extracting a 1 minute .m2v segment (i.e. just video, no audio there) from the longer VOBs: it was always 54.6 MB/min or an average of 57282275 B/min = 7.28 Mb/s.
I have also used Digigami MegaPEG.X but not with those iDVD files. I vaguely remember comparing some Bitrate Viewer's results to those from Digigami MegaPEG.X. AFAIR the results weren't exactly the same but they were similar.
    to analyze some mp2's
You mean "to analyze some MPEG2's", right?
    average bit rate = 2.559-4.144 Mb/s
Really? That sounds VERY low! Can it be true?
DVD's video bitrate is up to 10036 kb/s (=9.8 Mb/s) and usually it is about 4-6-8 Mb/s. 4 Mb/s is already quite low for high quality output (SVCD is 2,4 Mb/s).
    How long were your test clips? My iDVD 4.0.1 test clips were 15, 30, 60, 70, 75, 90, 105 and 120 minutes.

  • Maximum Bit Rate help

I have been trying to find the best bit rate settings to display from a USB drive on an Xbox 360 or PS3.  I found the recommended settings but the maximum bit rate that I set it at, is always exceeded during playback.
For example if I am using the h.264 codec with the bit rate settings of VBR and the maximum bit rate set for 10 Mbps, my bit rate will always spike way higher then 10 Mbps during scenes with more movement.  A scene where I'm pointing my camera out of a moving car with houses going by displayed a bit rate of 38.8.  In case anyone is wondering I use the bit rate counter on my PS3 to find the bit rate at any give time.
Now When the bit rate spiked at 38.8 for that scene, it dipslayed fine on my PS3, but when played back on my Xbox it stutters a little at that moment.
If I use a CBR of 10 Mbps the bit rate still goes quite a bit over 10 Mbps but didn't approach 40 Mbps like it does when using a variable bit rate.  When using a CBR it played back flawlessly on both devices but there was a little drop in quality.
Is there something I am doing wrong or is this just how it works?  I assumed the target bit rate is what you are shooting for and the maximum bit rate would never be exceeded.  Is that not the case?

I took that it could be inaccurate in to consideration but when I play a blu-ray back the bit rate usually fluctuates between 25-35 Mbps so I assumed the readings were pretty accurate.
I'll try the VLC player as you suggested when I get home.  Does it show you the bit rate during playback, the average bit rate, or what?
Also if I set my maximum bit rate to 10 Mbps should it never exceed that?

  • Bit rate preference

Do you prefer keeping your music at a specific bit rate? I use to keep all mine at 128kbps so I could fit more onto my iPod, but I soon found out that when I played those files on my stereo (loudly, of course) that there was a fair bit of distortion.
Since then if I am ripping CDs i rip them to 160kbps and I will allow files up to 256kpbs into my library, on the rare occasion I was have some that are 320kbps.
What bitrate and/or file type do you use or recommend to other users?

  • Suggestions for bit rate for books on cd

    Hi
I'm trying to clear some room on my ipod. Thus far I've been importing everything at 192. I'm hoping to reimport some of the books on cd that I've put on and would like some suggestions as to how low of a bit rate I can use without affecting sound quality too much (I tried 96 and really couldn't tell the difference).
    Thanks
    Evelyn

    Hi, Evelyn.
For spoken word recordings, 32 kbps is generally considered an acceptable setting.
And, for what it's worth, that's the Bit Rate for Audiobooks purchased from the iTunes Store.
EDIT: You may also want to have a look at these suggestions: Link

  • Extremely Low iTunes Bit Rates

All of the music that I purchased from iTunes appears to have a bit rate of 128kbps. I understand that ACC files sounds slightly better at low bit rates. Regardless, this is the absolute lowest tolerable bit rate imaginable. It is only suitable for preview purposes with low quality PC speakers or cheap headphones. I can't believe that Apple would selling warmed over 8 Track Tapes.
Please tell me that I am doing something wrong.
Is the parent file greater that 128 kbps when I choose to burn a CD?
I am prepared to accept some destructive compression but 128 kbps is not functional. Converting ACC files to MP3 would result in even greater loss of quality. Converting the file to MP3 would be necessary for anyone with an MP3 incapable of playing ACC files.

I actually believe that it probably has more to do with storage space, rather than the record companies.
There's a consensus out there that people basically can't really tell the difference between 128k and 192k rips. And since the vast majority people may not notice or even care, Apple's philosophy is probably "why rip at the larger bit rate, and potentially use up 30% more network storage space, download bandwidth, etc. when most people won't notice".
I happen to strongly disagree with this sentiment, and can absolutely tell the difference between 128k & 192k rips (especially on things like Pink Floyd etc.), but it's apparently not my call.

  • Increasing bit rates to maximize available disc space.

I am loading up HD footage to burn to a dual layer SD DVD.
I have an 82 minute feature film that I burned and used about 5 gigs of space on the dual layer DVD.
Here's the issue: If I have an 8 gig dual layer disk and only use 5 gigs, I am leaving 3 gigs idle which I would like to use to get the most quality possible. The problem is that I get capped at bit rates of about 7.1 mbps average and 10 mbps maximum (this limits me to only using 5 gigs). If I can increase the bit rate, I can use the idle disk space and, more importantly, get better picture quality. The problem is that I don't know how to get beyond the mbps cap limits. Is there a way?
I hate to leave the gig space idle. It feels like I am walking away and leaving money on the table.
    Thanks
    Jim

David, the cost of the DVD is not what is driving this (DVDs are very cheap), rather the desire to get the best picture quality as possible for my movie is driving this. By using the remaining 3 gigs of space, I can put more information on the DVD, compress less, and get better picture quality.
You ask "have you tried to play this 10mb file of yours? Can't be done on 99% of DVD players." I did burn it and play it on my DVD player and it worked just fine. I just want to see if I can't get a better picture quality by using the idle 3 gigs.
As far as a blu ray system - yes I do want one. Finding one that is compatible with a mac system, burns reliably, and produces blu rays that will actually work on most blu ray players probably won't happen for a couple of years at least. Not to mention the fact that blank blu ray disks costs about $20 each, so I will be adding $20 to each festival entry fee for my movie by using blu ray and that assumes they all burn perfectly with no waste involved.
If I can't increase the mbps rate, then I suppose I am stuck with what I have. I just want to know if it can be done better.

  • Recording bit rate

I have a friend who keeps talking about 16- and 24-bit recording.  I've also seen software that talks about "32-bit real".  I'm a real noob at this, but I'm assuming the more bits the greater resolution, like more pixels per inch on an image, and I'm assuming that the 32-bit real comes in after the software does some jiggery-pokery with the input data.
We're planning to do some recording, and we're working out what computer to use.  I've done some searching, but so far I've been unable to determine what bit rate the Mac uses in recording straight in through the sound input.  I''m talking about a mike going straight in through the sound input and recording on something like Audacity or GarageBand.
I have a white Intel iMac, c. 2006.  What's the native bit rate?  Does anybody know?  Also, is it any different for later models?
    TIA, Matt

The digital noise is a factor of the number of bits. It is actually 6 * n, where n is the number of bits.
So for an 8 bit signal, the noise is 48 dB down, about par for a cassette tape.
16 bit is 96 dB down.
24 bit is 144 dB down, which for all practical purposes, means that everything else (pre-amps, et al) are what affects the signal fidelity.

  • What Bit rate???

Hi I have just finished a 55minute documentary and would like to know if anyone could advice me on what bit rate I should use when compressing (I am using Mpeg2 90minute best setting) so as to avoid jumpy images later on certain dvd players.
    Thanks a lot
    Daniel

I want to make a SD DVD. I mistakenly was looking under the HD options earlier. I just encoded a DVD with the following:
    bit rate 7.1
    max bit rate at 8.8
    mode = Two pass VBR
    motion estimation = best
    aspect ratio = 4:3
It seems very pixelated on my 30-inch Cinema display when playing it back. I did change the encoding settings after already having the video imported into the Assets and in the Track. Not sure if you can change settings after importing. Any idea why it is pixelated?
    Thanks!

  • How do you know the bit rate of a video clip?

I have video clips from my video camera recorded in MPEG 2, PAL standard definition 720x576. 2 questions:
    1. How can I find out what bit rate the video is recorded at?
    2. Knowing this, can I in PProCS4 encode this for DVD without any transcoding (assuming, of course, no effects or fades etc have been added)?
I like to keep the coding the same, to avoid the quality loss of transcoding to a different bit rate.
I use 256 kb/s audio in MPEG 1 layer 2 (pretty much standard DVD format).
    Any info appreciated.

In Ulead Mediastudio Pro, you can see the data rate of the video, and also in DVD Movie Factory select "do not convert..." etc, where un-edited clips are not transcoded, to give maximum picture quality. I dropped MSP, as Corel (having taken over Ulead) has, sadly' dropped the product, so I bought PProCS4 hoping it would be at least as capable. Alas. Having said that, in most respects PPro is as good or better than MSP, and runs fine on Vista and Win7 beta (which I am using now), so I am still happy I get PPro.

  • Use a preset, but encoded .mov file is different bit rate... why?

    Hi,
I have a few 2mins sequences from FCP5.1.4 exported to compressor and choose the preset web download .H264 800Kbps.
In the Inspector it shows the file info as:-
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated file size: 7.42 MB
    Audio Encoder
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 480
    Height: 270
    Pixel aspect ratio: default
    Crop: None
    Frame rate: 23.976
    Frame Controls: Off
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 50
    Min. Spatial quality: 50
    Key frame interval: 150
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 50
    Average data rate: 0.688 (Mbps)
    Fast Start: on
but when it finishes encoding, the data rate is far less than what it was suppose to be?
now the fun starts... this hasn't happened to every sequence, some are perfect.
I can shorten this particular sequence in FCP to say 10seconds and quickly try the preset in compressor and everything is good, I then go back into FCP and undo the shortening to give me back my full length clip and export to compressor using the exact same preset and I'll not get the data rate I want... it shows no error either.... it looks like everything worked as the preset says but checking the info it hasn't.
Sorry for the long winded explaination but it's driving me crazy, been sat here over 4 hours, keep redoing everything but no luck.
    Any help?
Could it be a bug in compressor I'm not aware of?
    C.

sorry, the above post has some text missing when I copied and pasted...
    it should read as follows:-
*I choose a preset and the inspector reads:*
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated file size: *7.42 MB*
    Audio Encoder
    AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT

    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 50
    Min. Spatial quality: 50
    Key frame interval: 150
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 50
    Average data rate: 0.688 (Mbps)
    Fast Start: on
*But the file that is created reads as follows:-*
    Data Size: *2.13 MB*
    Data Rate: *198.31 kbits/sec*
    Duration: 00:01:30:54
    Normal Size: 480 x 270 pixels
Anyone know why it's coming out different?
    Thanks

  • Compressor:  setting max bit rate for VBR audio

    Hi,
I am using Compressor 3 to transcode DV to H.264.  I want to encode the audio to AAC VBR wtih a max bitrate of 256.  Under the Settings tab, under audio, for VBR there is a slider from good to best.  what does this mean in terms of max bit rates?  How can you use this slider in a meaninful way?
There is a setting for Average Bit Rate, where you can select a value.  do we konw what the max bit rate would be?
    thanks
    dan

Good question about the slider…and I really don't know the answer. Why don't you try a test: crank it to one extreme and then the other with a representative source file and see what impact it actually makes on the properties of the respective output files.
    Good luck.

  • Dropped frames while using multi bit rates in Flash Media Encoder 3

I’m using the Adobe Flash Media Encoder 3 to stream live video to a host computer at 200 Kbps.  At the same time, I’m saving a copy to my hard drive at 350 Kbps. The live stream signal seems to be ok.  The saved stream has dropped frames.  Total bandwidth is about 615 Kbps.  I’ve looked at performance marking software to see if my hard drive is slow and to check my CPU speed. I can’t see what I need to save a better copy and still keep the live stream.
Is this just a need for more CPU speed?
The encoder is on a Dell Optiplex 360 Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 @2.53GHz with 3GB RAM.  The hard drive is a 152GB IDE ST3160815AS.  It has write caching enabled on the disk.

I saw your request for the log file in a different post.  This is one of them that was made from my encoding.  I don't see any answers in it.
