Bitlocker on Windows 7 - External drive recovery with unlock password

Hi,
I am in the unfortunate situation where I have a 3tb external hard drive that I have 2 partitions on. The smaller, 250gb partition was encrypted using bitlocker for work purposes. Now that I have left my previous job, I wanted to decrypt the drive and use
it normally.
While trying to decrypt, the laptop ran out of battery, and the process was interrupted. In the morning when I tried to unlock the drive, I keep getting the message "Bitlocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion"
Unfortunately, I do not any of the recovery keys (which were in the old work laptop). However, I have the password that I normally use to unlock the drive.
My question is: Is there any way I can use the bitlocker recovery tool to salvage my data using the normal unlock password?
Second, on the off chance that I can, do I need to output the data to an entirely new drive? If I use the option to output to an image file, will that still overwrite all the contents of the output drive?
Any help would be much appreciated. Please let me know if there is any more information I can provide. Thank you!

Hi,
Have you tried using manage-bde command to decrypt this partition?
manage-bde -unlock Volume -pw *********

How do I get my Mac to recognize external drive filled with 5 projects, created at Apple Store? I created 6 hrs worth of projects on computer in apple store with my external. came home my computer did not recognize it at all. went back to apple, they said oh click the news reel bottom left that will do it, came back home and nope....not recognizing it, in fact it says no events exist on this disc. I want to get the 5 projects and put up on vimeo tonight. ugh.

    Hi Tom,
I'm so impressed with how you help everyone solve their problems. I will do my best here, but my husband will be home soon and knows how this large external is formatted.
How late do you all work there? I'm on east coast. Is the screen shot you wanted? I opened up external and
    this is what I see.
Drive is connected to usb in back of computer. N

  • How can I retrieve the password hint of an external drive encrypted with FileVault 2?

    Hi,
I'm running on 10.7.3, I have an external HDD that is fully encrypted with FileVault 2.  When encrypting an external drive, FileVault 2 doesn't provide a recovery key, but it gives you the opportunity to give a hint at the time you enter the password.  My question is: how can I get this hint?
I'm asking because I can't mount the drive anymore.  I keep getting prompted to enter the password, and although I believe I'm sure what the password is, it keeps getting refused.  The weird thing is that I have never been asked this password because the drive has always been automatically mounted after reboots, I guess because the password was in my Keychain.  I have no idea why it no longer auto-mounts and none of the passwords I tried worked.
In Disk Utility, when I tried to "verify" the locked volume, Disk Utility logs an error in system.log with no other user visible action.  I filed a bug with Apple about this (#11286871) but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.  The error logged is:

Even if you succeed with the difficult instructions to do this, if you are running Mavericks (10.9.x) on your Mac, count on it to start over with a whole new backup of your Mac, so you will have two separate backup files for the Mac on the Time Capsule.
Realistically, few of us ever need to go back months or years to retrieve a file from Time Machine. My recommendation would be to keep the external hard drive around for a few months until you have a good backup history established for the Mac....and then delete the backups from the drive and use it as a spare hard drive.

  • Boot Camp with Win 8 Can't See The USB External Drive [MBR with NTFS, Fat32, HFS Partitions]

Hi. When I boot to Boot Camp with the latest Apple Windows Support drivers can't see my USB Flash Drive, DVD and OS X volumes but not my USB external drive that has an MBR partition scheme (using iPartition from GUID) and in there it has different volumes [HFS when I boot to Snow Leopard, Fat32, NTFS]. What can I do with Boot Camp to make it see my USB external drive and why isn't it seeing the USB when it can see the USB flash drive both use USB?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Buy Paragon NTFS for OS X $20.

  • Will this external drive work with my macbook?

I'm thinking about investing in an external hard drive, is this one compatible with my original Macbook Pro?
    http://www.amazon.com/Iomega-Portable-External-Drive-34945/dp/B003D3NDD2
(side question, I've never used an external HD before. Will it just mount on my desktop and I drag and drop files?)
    Thanks in advance.

Yes it will work . Most HD are preformated for windows machines so I would definitely reformat. More info: http://db.tidbits.com/article/10307
Might want to think bout partitioning if you have the space. Maybe one partiton is for making a bootable clone with carbon copy cloner. http://www.bombich.com/
I do not believe 10.4 is time machine capable- otherwise I would recommend that as well.
Backing up is a good strategy. Congratulations for making the step!
Yes drag and drop into your empty partition.
    Hope this solves your problem

  • Another external drive issue with Frontrow

I've already looked at these treads,

But they aren't really everything. I have an external drive that I have my Movies, TV Shows, and Music on. I changed the location in iTunes, and everything imported fine. My AppleTV sees all of them just fine. However Frontrow won't. I can put an alias in the Movies folder as described, but then I don't see anything in the TV Shows menu option in FR. Sure they are listed under the movies, if I put a shortcut in there for them. I want Frontrow to work just as it did when all my media was on the local drive, how do I do that?

    Hello Brett!,
A rule i usually live by when purchasing externals, is to firstly check the file format (many are factory formatted in NTFS or FAT32) and if that is the case then change them to HFS+ using disk utility. That is of course if you intend to only use it with your mac, for example i use an external formatted in FAT32 and it works on Windows and Mac.
Secondly its a good code of practice to make sure the drive spins up, as that is the easiest way to check for a dodgy powersupply.
Thirdly and hopefully finally, if those tips don't work then try mounting it on another mac or pc and see if it is detected in any form, that'll tell you if there is a connection issue.
    Regards,

  • Read my external drive files with Apple TV

    Hello,
I just got yesterday the latest version of Apple TV and I am looking to be able to read files using Apple TV on my external drive, including MP3 and video files.  I'm a novice with iTunes and Apple products and I'm on Windows 7 with my computer.
Can anyone help me?  My 1st goal is to keep everything on my external drive to avoid filling my hard drive.
    Thanks for the help.

What you need to do is add media files to itunes from the external drive 'by reference' which will note where they are but not copy then to the internal hard drive.
Please note these files have to be in the correct format (h264) or they won't stream.  If they're not you'll have to convert using something like Handbrake.
To add files 'by reference' change irtunes Preferences > Advanced tab and untick the box which talks about copying to iTunes when added.

  • Mounting external drive encrypted with Luks

    Hello guys,
since I'm using Luks for my whole system I'd like to backup it on my external hard drive that should be encrypted too.
So I used the following commands:
    cryptsetup -c aes-xts-plain -s 512 luksFormat /dev/sdb
    cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb external
    mkfs.ext4 /dev/mapper/external
I'm then able to mount it with
    mount -t ext4 /dev/mapper/external /media/external
But I want to automise that, means my external drive should be mounted automatically by system (I guess it's only via udev possible?) after it was plugged in, without any passphrase scan and with complete user access, not just root.
    How could I achieve that?
    Thank you for your help.

2go drives are always bound to a user login when used with the "automatic unlock" option. That means, they get unlocked when you logon. As the server service starts before logon, the device is not ready to be shared, yet. Normal and expected.
You can only setup a scheduled task that restarts the server service after logon (trigger: "at logon"), that would work.

  • External Drive Stolen with Time Machine Back Ups

    Hello,
Sorry if this has been posted before. I scanned through a few pages of posts and didn't see anything.
My home was burglarized and they took my G5, Cinema Display and my 500GB external drive with my Time Machine backup data. My question is: How secure is the data on the external drive? Can the theif just plug in the drive and see all of the files or does TM password protected? My G5 was password protected to log in to it. Does that log in transfer to the TM files?
    Thanks!
    DH

As Donald says, the data can be accessed.
Your backups are as secure (or insecure) as your Mac -- if someone steals either, they can get at your data fairly easily, if they know what they're doing, unless it's encrypted.
It is harder to get at Time Machine backups on an external drive, because Windoze can't read it; you'd have to use a Mac (running Leopard or Snow Leopard) to access it.
But most theft is not for your data; it's to resell the hardware.

  • Booting system from an external drive; Folder with Question Mark

Hello all. I am trying to setup an external USB hard drive as a bootable device for my Tiger install. This is on a Core Duo Mac Mini. I have successfully partitioned it using GUID into two partitions; A small 5gb partition for the minimal OSX install, and the remainder for data. I installed OSX onto it via my included Tiger discs that came with the Mini, no problems. However, when I try to boot from it I get a Folder icon with a question mark in the center. I can boot the Mini normally and browse the external partition. It shows no problems. Disk Utility also shows no errors on the drive. What have I missed?
For any who are curious, my goal here is to use NetRestore to make a backup image of my main Mini hard disk. Then by booting to the external USB drive, I will be able to restore the backup image (stored on the data partition of the external drive as well) to the internal Mini hard disk.
Mac Mini Core Dio Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just letting everyone know that I am still unresolved on this one. I have tried it all; Zero-overwrite erased the external drive before partitioning it, used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the boot disk, you name it. Every situation leads to the same result; no ability to boot from the USB drive, It just acts like it can't read it. Are there "undocumented" problems booting from USB on Intel macs?

  • My repaired macbook now has Yosemite. I have my photo library on an external drive loaded with Aperture 2. Now unable to do anything.

My "photo management macbook" crashed and when it was repaired it was upgraded to Yosemite. This macbook is used exclusively for photos using Aperture 2 (I also have a new Pro retina and an older macbook as well, with Yosemite and Lion loaded respectively). I have my photo library on an external drive and it was loaded using Aperture 2. Now I cannot use Aperture, cannot see photos, cannot upgrade to Aperture 3.6 and so cannot migrate photos to another software package, which I am going to have to do this year sometime.
What can I do to get Aperture working and migrate my photos?

On Yosemite you can only run Aperture 3.6, but that will not run on Lion.
If you want to get Aperture running on your photo management macbook, restore it to the previous system from the last backup you made before the crash occurred, if you have a full Time Machine backup.  If you want to keep the Mac on Yosemite, try to restore the older system to an external drive and boot the Mac from that drive, when you want to work with Aperture 2.
Otherwise your only option would be to buy the upgrade to Aperture 3.6.

  • The new 10.4.1.10 will not let you make CD back up?  The last time my computer fried my external drive went with it so I would prefer a hard copy.

Can I go back to an older verson on iTune? Last time a power surge fried both my computer and the external drive so I prefer a hard copy.

Apple doesn't provide a way to downgrade iTunes.
You can consolidate your iTunes Media Folder, and then burn it to a DVD with some multidisc CD/DVD burning app.

  • USB External Drive issue with 10.5.7

Just as infos : i have experienced a weird issue regarding my external USB Lacie Drive. It has been recognise by 10.5.7 as a SAMSUNG drive. I use this external drive with time Machine for backup. Everything dispite that seems to work, but can't take the risk as i didn't noticed improvement in my system of Logic with the new OS, i have decide to downgrade.

thank you everybody for your replies, but as i said i went back to 10.5.6 and everything works perfectly here. Yes under USB (system profiler) the drive is well recognise by the system, it's only under 10.5.7 that that drive was listing as a SAMSUNG. Anyway, i will give another try to 10.5.7 in few weeks, as i am in a middle of the projet (CD for a local artist), it might be wise i stay under 10.5.6 as it works well on my system.
PS (as i said earlier the drive was working well under 10.5.7 but just listed as a Samsung drive). I am not be the only one ?
