Bitlocker partitions disappear from laptop SSD

Hi,
I upgraded my laptop with a 512 GB Crucial MX100 SSD. The first SSD starting pausing for a minute or so every so often, then longer and longer. Finally
after a couple of days, the data partitions disappeared and were coded as RAW.
I replaced the SSD with the same model and restored the partitions leaving 100GB free space after the C Drive and left the last partition un-encrypted.
Today, the three bitlocker'd partitions are wiped again. Instead of saying RAW, they say nothing, just 0 for used and free space with File System
blank, but that might change if I reboot.
I left 100 GB unused for garbage collection (20%) and future emergency space, and other than doing "quick" formats, then bitlockering, then
loading data, there has not been much disk activity.

The wiped drives were bitlockered, but C: didn't get wiped. T: and M: unlock automatically during the boot and H: unlocks manually.
There is no TPM in this machine so encryption is done at the OS level.
As far as I know, there hasn't been any power fail as the machine was left on last night and came out of hibernation OK this morning. I do not know when the drives messed up this time but they were OK yesterday. Windows Defender
says it is up to date.
Any suggestions as to which of Bitlocker, Win 8.1, the laptop (Aspire 3830TG-6415), or the SSD could be wiping the partitions?
I was wondering if it could be some mess up with TRIM between Windows 8.1 Disk Formatting, Bitlocker, and the SSD's automatic garbage collection?
Thanks, Bob.

Update:
It’s still too early for me to tell what is actually causing the problem. I found two great articles at Anandtech (X-25-M SSD and SSD Anthology) and decided to approach this differently. The problem may arise out of improperly formatting and then bitlockering
the partitions.
Before this, I really did not know much about the details of SSDs, particularly Garbage Collection and TRIM, or that the drives themselves needed unallocated space and idle time to unclog themselves. I now think there is a possibility that there may be a
firmware bug in the MX100 or a problem with respect to formatting Bitlocker volumes in Windows 8.1, which combined with a naïve user (me) can confuse the drive. Again, I am positing this as a possibility.
In the past, I have ALWAYS performed a full format on any HDD I ever used, in the machine that it is supposed to live in. Rather naively, I did that with the first SSD ten days ago. On top of that, I bitlocked the partitions after initialization and before
use. Except, once I might of reformatted and re-bitlocked a partition.
I now know that this would be a no-no in the SSD world, especially if TRIM was not working correctly for full formats, or time was not given for the SSD to perform a garbage collection, or Bitlocker did not pass TRIM commands correctly.
Since all the SSD sectors were used in the first drive, and all were written to possibly at least twice in a short while, the drive had a lot of page cleaning to do.
I suspect now, that somehow I might have managed to overload the MX100’s ability to garbage collect the bitlocker partitions and as a result, with something going haywire, the index to TRIMmed or garbage collected SSD pages got messed up. The drive, if this
is the problem, then managed somehow to clean its blocks AFTER I had restored data to them, thereby wiping data, resulting in completely NULL pages.
With this in mind, I reconfigured the partitions yesterday and left more unallocated space. I quick formatted the partitions, Bitlocked them, waited for a couple of hours, then restored data. There is now 108GB of unallocated drive space, plus another 54GB
of free space in the U drive (162GB) against 72GB of new, encrypted partitions. So far they have held up today. I do not know if this is really needed, overkill, or what.
Normally, with unencrypted volumes, there is enough unallocated file space that the SSD has lots of pages to work with. With fully encrypted volumes, they only have their own reserve to work with.

  • Calendar info disappeared from laptop and then from handheld

Please help- I have a new TX and today i noticed that my calendar entries were missing from my laptop palm application so i figured i would hotsync it ( after telling it that handheld rewrites computer) and almost all of my entries on my handheld disappeared.  I am trying to reconstruct it but i can't find it in archives or backup.  Can anyone help?  thanks.
    Post relates to: Palm TX

I'm not sure what happen why you lost all your calendars when you hotsync your Palm. I will try to help you restore your calendar data.
    About the file 1142K.
Before we touch this file make a backup copy. Also you said you just rebuild some of your calendar data, let's make a backup copy of those data that you had created.
Open the Palm Desktop software and select the Date/Calendar icon on the left to view your calendar data.
Click on File > Export and give the file name and remember where you are saving the file, ie. calendar.dba (we need this file later after we restore your 1142k file) and click on export.
    Close the Palm Desktop software.
Using windows explorer, rename the datebook.bak located in your C:\Program Files\Palm\(your userid)\datebook folder to datebook.dat (hoping the datebook.bak file is not corrupted).
After you rename the file from datebook.bak to datebook.dat open Palm Desktop software and select the Date/Calendar icon and see if you had restore your lost calendar data.
If successful, you need to "Import" the backup file (calendar.dba) so you will still have the ones that you had rebuilt.
To Import, from Palmdesktop click on File > Import and locate the calendar.dba file, select the file and click Import. Verify your calendar and make sure you can see the one that you rebuilt.
    Good luck and post back...

  • Gspeed ES Pro RAID keeps disappearing from Mac, have to re-initialize!

    UPDATED VERSION:
MAC PRO KEEPS LOSING CONNECTION TO RAID DRIVE.
After 9 months of organizing a documentary film edit on an external RAID drive (12TB, Raid 0. Yes, I have 2 layers of backup), I purchased the PNY Nvidia Quadro 4000 video card for the primary edit. Soon after, I began having boot up issues. The screen would freeze at various points during the startup process, requiring manual power-downs.
Over the past two months, my computer has lost communication with the RAID 3 times, forcing me to rebuild it from my backup drives (10TB). One tech at Diskwarrior said my computer lost the partition, and that the 1s and 0s had been largely replaced with gibberish.
The Raid becomes unrecognized by my computer in one of two ways:
1-    After two days of copying data back over to the raid (rebuilding it), I get an error code -36, saying a file cannot be read or written, then the Raid partition disappears from disk utility and the next time I start up the computer says it doesn’t recognize my drive. The ATTO configuration tool (the card that attaches my raid to the computer) sees the drive, but my computer does not. I have to re-initialize it and start over again.
2-    The Raid will go from being recognized to not being recognized when I reboot one day. Again, I have to re-initialize and rebuild.
I removed the PNY Graphics card and put in the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 it came with. On day 2 of rebuilding the RAID, I got the error -36 and the Raid disappeared from disk utility again. When I opened the raid folder, which seconds before had 10 TB of data on it, it read as zero items. So the PNY Nvidia card was NOT the problem.
Apple has worked on the computer 3 times, running extensive hardware tests, but the same problem persists. At one point they said my blackmagic card was the problem, and more recently they said I probably have bad ram. I tried separate ram (the old 6GB my computer came with), and my computer seemed to begin booting up okay, but one day later I had the -36 error, the RAID couldn’t be recognized again and I lost the data during another rebuild. Apple even replaced the Ram Tray, but the same problem persists.
G technology says my RAID’s hardware is fine, and ATTO, who makes the Raid card, says it looks fine to them too. This does not mean they are 100% not the problem though.
Yesterday as I was attempting to rebuild the RAID again, I saw the -36 error come up, and files stopped copying. I immediately made a screenshot and noted the time.
Today I spoke with a really cool tech at Apple named Ron who helped me investigate the Kernel log, and this is what it said (the RAID is called FadingWest):
    Dec  6 17:05:36 Jesses-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: hfs_swap_BTNode: invalid forward link (0xbb739311 >= 0x0000df00)
    Dec  6 17:05:36 Jesses-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: hfs: node=2717 fileID=4 volume=FadingWest device=/dev/disk3s2
Dec  6 17:05:36 Jesses-Mac-Pro kernel[0]: hfs: Runtime corruption detected on FadingWest, fsck will be forced on next mount.
Ron believes my problem is with the RAID card. He thinks it’s dropping the connection. So I’ve got an RMA going with ATTO for a new one.
Here are the final things I can troubleshoot at this point:
    New RAID card (ATTO)
    New RAID drive (G-Technology)
    Motherboard / PCI lanes (Apple).
    NEW COMPUTER (Apple)
Any ideas are appreciated. Here are the items in question:
Mac Pro mid 2010 2x2.66 Ghz 6 core Intel Xeon OS X Lion 10.7.5
    G speed ES Pro (G Technology) – 12TB @ RAID 0
    ATTO R680 RAID card

I found this on another help site, I think it's the trick:
there are 2 halves to the Dock. With a bar in the middle.
on the left side, there are 2 sections. the furthest left are the icons that will stay in the dock, then on the right side of the left half of the dock, are the temporary icons, the ones that just stay there till the program is done.
You can freely move a temporary icon to the left and it will be come a permanent icon.
I am reminded of the wizard of OZ here... you could always get to firefox... you just had to click your mouse (and drag an icon)..

  • HT4818 I have installed bootcamp that worked properly.  Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another OS X 10.8.2 and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. How can I boot Windows again and keep both

I have installed bootcamp by the bootcamp assistant and worked properly.
Then I have partitioned the OS X 10.8.2 and installed another Mountain Lion System and I have got two MAC boot options and Bootcamp disappeared from the Option menu. However, Bootcamp still remained in the Startup Disk in the System Preferences. When I tried to boot Bootcamp using the Startup Disk it did not boot and received a message that there is no bootable device. I have not lost any data and can read Bootcamp partition from both OS X systems. Please advise how can I boot Windows / Bootcamp again? Thank you.

Recommendation 1: Use a VM for this. It's essentially a giant C.F. to do this with native booting, and is potentially fragile.
But if you're going to ignore that and do this anyway, realizing that it can break anytime in particular with OS upgrades, and that it's very difficult to impossible to resize the three volumes once you've installed the systems:
    1. create three partitions, setting each to be the size for OS X copy 1, copy 2, and Windows respectively. The Windows partition needs to be set to MS-DOS format (actually FAT32) which later in the Windows installer you'll reformat as NTFS. Do not use Boot Camp Assistant to resize/partition the disk, it simply won't work for this use case.
    2. install OS X copy 1
    3. install OS X copy 3
    4. Use gdisk (available at sourceforge) which is a command line only application, to create a new hybrid MBR adding only the last partition (Windows) to the hybrid MBR and setting it to be bootable. As a concequence you will not be able to see/share either OS X volume from within Windows. The Windows NTFS volume will be visible from within OS X.
    5. Install Windows to the only partition its installer should see (confirm size), you'll need to format it NTFS first, and I suggest using the fast format option if available.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive.  Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box.  DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key.  That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives.  Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

  • My Bootcamp Partition has disappear from OSX and its impossible to activate

    Hello,
i`m using Bootcamp with Win XP, and now the partition has disappear from the desktop of OSX. When i use the HD-Diagnostic tool i can see the partition as unactivated. Trying to activate is not possible. But the partition seems to be working, because i can still start Win XP when i reboot and hold the "alt" Key. Then i can choose between OSX and WinXP and it goes fine. Is there a way to activate this partition in OSX? Because i want to delete WinXP from my Apple.

    Hi
To remove the WinXP partition you have to run Bootcamp Assistant (Application/Utilities) again, it should give you the option to (not sure of exact words)Remove Windows and Return to one partition.
This question should have really been asked in the Boot Camp Public Beta Forum. The first thread in that forum is called Uninstalling Boot Camp but gives the same instructions as I have.
