BitLocker To Go encrypting 128 GB Flash Drive.

I am trying to help someone encrypt some 128GB flash drives using BitLocker To Go and have had no success.  Is there a problem with using a flash drive that large?  It is a Patriot Memory SuperSonic Magnum 128GB drive formatted as exFAT.
I have ran checkdisk on it twice and formatted it once.  Still run into the same problem.  It gets to 2% and stops.
Error eventID in event log are: 24611, 24613, 24593, 24586.  I have tried the fixes I found on MS Technet for those errors but it does not work.  I have encrypted a 1GB flash drive and it works great, just not the larger one.
Any suggestions??????

EDIT 3:02PM:  I got this to work on a Windows 8.1 test machine that I already had running.  It just took the flash drive and started the encryption after the 2% where the other machine left off.  Very weird.

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit.  I have tried it on 2 different laptops.  One has an old image that the user has been using and one with a fresh image on different hardware just to see if there was something on her machine that was stopping it from
encrypting.  I had 5 flash drives to encrypt and they were all the same.  On the Windows 8.1 test machine that I have, 4 of them encrypted with no problem.  The 5th stopped every 5 or so minutes and I would have to remove the drive and plug
it back in and unlock it and the encryption process would start back.  After they were all finished I had the user test them on her laptop and try and put files on them and they all worked properly.
I did try and run a repair on the drives and it found 0 errors and using Windows Explorer it would not let me format them to anything other than exFAT or NTFS.  I tried using diskpart and it would not format the drives at all.
I have used BitLocker To Go on other drive sizes like 16GB or 32GB and they worked.  No real sure why this wouldn't work, but it got them done regardless.  Next time I think I will try to do a clean install of Windows 7 and not use our image
and see if that does anything.

  • Filevault 2 encryption and USB flash drives in Lion 10.7.1

I have my harddrive on my MacBook Air encrypted with File Vault 2 under Lion 10.7.1  Seems to work fine until I try and backup using time machine. Its very very very slow. - its saying it will take days to back up 90GB  to a 256GB USB memory stick.
I thien tried to copy about 40GB of files to the stick and it was much faster - about 2 hours.
I thought that these files would be encrypted and unreadable on other macs? I plugged the stick into another mac and read the files just fine? I want them to be encryoted - does FV 2 support this  capability?

If you copy files from an encrypted volume to an unencrypted one, the copies will be unencrypted. Using Disk Utility, you can format the USB device as Mac OS X Encrypted.

  • Flash Drive No Longer Recognized

I purchased a new PNY Turbo 3.0 128 GB Flash Drive, formatted it as Mac OSX Journaled, transferred files to it, encrypted it, used it for about 30 minutes on my iMac, then it disappeared while navigating in Finder.
The flash drive does not show in Finder, Disk Utilities, or System Information.  Yes, show external drives is checked in Finder Preferences.
The USB is recognized in an older Macbook using a much older OS, although I can't view the contents and a message on the Macbook says that I need to put the drive into a device with an updated Mac OS.
No other user accounts on my iMac can view the flash drive.
So far I have done numerous restarts, shutdowns, and remounts, reinstalled Mavericks (again), repaired disk permissions, etc.
This is the second issue I've had with an Apple formatted and encryped flash drive disappearing.  I've put an entire Sunday afternoon reading through threads and troublshooting this, and looks like some people just accept it as another thing that doesn't work on their Mac or go try different brands of flash drives until one works.
Suggestions or recommendations anyone?  I would like to keep this flash drive (it does have the Mac symbol on the packaging) if possible.

Did you ever get a satisfactory response to this?
I too have just encountered this issue.  I have a PNY USB 3.0 128MB flash drive.  I used it successfully for several months.
Today, connecting it to a brand new Mac Mini, 10.10, it is not recognized.  It's not just that it isn't recognized... It's not even showing up in Disk Utility.  The only indication I have that the system has detected it is this log message:
    2014-10-26 12:20:55.000 PM kernel[0]: USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 09031000003796153712 0x154b 0xfa05 0x1075, 2
Also, it shows up in System Information, in the USB Device Tree, but nowhere else.
I then tried it in my Retina MB Pro (2.3GHz i7) running 10.9.5, where I had always successfully used it, with the exact same results.
It appears that the OS is failing to load the driver, or perhaps something in the USB negotiation is failing.
I tried it on a couple of Macs, running 10.9.5, both USB2.0 and USB3.0, with no luck.  My old Snow Leopard 2005 iMac recognized it, but the filesystem was too new for it to read it. (It is an encrypted USB volume).  I was, however, able to copy the raw disk image, even though that mac couldn't read it.  I am hoping to access the files that way.
Now... I just put the USB Key into another of my Macbook Pros, an old 2.33GHz Core2Duo running 10.7.5, and this machine was able to access the encrypted partition with no problems at all.
So, I conclude that this is some problem related to 10.9.x, since both USB2.0 and USB3.0 Mac's running 10.9 were unable to recognize the disk, yet a 10.7.5 machine with USB2.0 reads this disk fine.
I'm hoping to get a suggestion from someone on how to best go about finding the root cause of this issue...
    Thanks,
    Pat

  • Flash drive not being recognized

My 128 Patriot Flash drive is not seen as potential scratch disk by CS5. I reformatted it as exFAT and then as NTFS but still not seen by CS5.
                   Thanks, CMA

Check your device manager. I'm sure it's listed as a removable drive and PS only uses fixed drives for swap. If the device offers a special system driver, install it and it may be assigned as a fixed drive, if not, then there's jsut no way to coax PS into using it.

  • I want to add the Flash driver to my Macbook Air

    Hello,
I am using a Macbook Air with 128 GB flash driver.
In the Apple store, can they install additional flash driver to my computer ?
otherwise, is there any other method to buy or install additional flash driver ?
    Thanks.

Apple will not upgrade computers. You can buy after market solid state drives - see OWC for example. The upgrade is relatively simple and OWC has training videos showing how to do it as well as tool kits with the tools you'll need. While Apple won't install it for you, many 3rd party repair sites will.

  • How do I encrypt a flash drive

    Hello,
Im trying to encrypt my flash drive, but when I try it says A GUID Partitioning Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required, but I also want it to work for Mac and Windows if I can, how do I do it?

If you need an encryption you can share between mac and windows, I'd advise you to use something like truecrypt.
You create a crypted container (the name you want) that you can mount as a drive. The app itself can be stored on the key as a portable app for windows.

  • How can I open encrypted files from a flash drive?

I moved transferred files from my work PC to a flash drive and had to encrypt them using Credant.  I know the password but can't find a way to decrypt the files on my mac...

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

  • Encrypted USB Flash Drive with Lion OS X questions

Like many of us, we don't want our USB flash drives lost with our valuable data on them.  So I've used the encryption function in Lion OS X in Disk Utility to make an encrypted flash drive.  This has some limitations as I read but what I want to know is can I use this usb drive on a DIFFERENT computer that also has OS X Lion?  I don't have another mac w/ lion to test it on.
This is important to me because I've got a laptop and God forbid, but if it was stolen or destroyed, will I be able to access my USB drive with important data on it by plugging it into another mac computer w/ lion?
Also, as a follow up question - I haven't yet made an encrypted DMG file (tho I plan to soon) and place that on a usb drive for multiple platform use, but how functional is this?  Can you add and copy files within the DMG file?  I thought a dmg file, once created, couldn't change in size, MB's, etc.
Basically, I'd like to use the most user friendly type of way of securing my files and data on USB flash drives.  I have tried TrueCrypt and have it installed but I just don't prefer using it.  I like the simplicity of the former approach, though it has it's limitations.

    How about any computer instead?
Hardware based encryption is superior to software encryption which can be hacked or not available if your needs change.
This will work with any computer, and has a nice keychain so you can attach to something like your wrist or retractable key cable.

There are also hardware based encypted external hard drives with their own keys and password keypads, also work with any computer if your needs are larger then a USB can handle.

  • Disk Utility / Encryption on Flash Drive used on Windows & Mac

I am interested in using a flash drive whose contents are encrypted. I will be using this flash drive to open/trasnfer files between a Windows computer as well as a Mac. Does anyone have any solutions for running an encryptiont that can be used on both platforms.
I have come across the opensource GNU Project. Is this the best technology use? Also there are different apps for each platform that use this standard. If this is the best solution, do you have any suggestions which are the best apps to use on the Mac and on the PC side?

"In most cases we recommend you select Microsoft’s exFAT format: this will give you full read and write access in both Windows (Vista or later) and OS X (Snow Leopard 10.6.5 or later)."
That's what I've done so that the flash drive can be read in Win 7 and OS 10.6.8 and above.

  • Using blocker on my flash drive

How can I use bitlocker to password protect or encrypt data on my flash drive. I already have data on it. So is it even possible? I have a Windows 7 64bit OS  but I do not want to encrypt that C drive.  If it can be done will I be able to
open the flash drive from Fedex"s USB readers for purposes of printing? .
    Thanks

can I encrypt after the fact? Will I then be able to continue to use it on the FedEx readers?  Thanks again for your help.
    Hi,
What do you mean by "can I encrypt after the fact"? Once a USB is encrypted, you will need a password to unlock the drive if you want to access it.

  • USB Flash Drive (with password protected Disk Image) copies files very slowly. Why?

I'm backing up some data onto a 32GB flash drive that I've put a password-protected Disk Image onto, and am copying this data into, but it is achingly slow. It's taking hours to copy just 500MB!
I have another 64MB flash drive that I have set up the same way, but this one copies files very quickly. I can't spot any difference between them in Disk Utility/System profiler.
For the record, the process I've used for bothe drives is reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then created a new Disk Image onto each drive (just a bitsmaller than the maximum size of the drive to enable it to fit) with 128--bit encryption.
Does anyone have any idea why the 32GB drive would perform any differently? I am using the same USB port on my iMac for each drive, but am getting very different copying speeds. It's driving me nuts! Many thanks.

The drive seems to be working fine if I copy files onto it outside of the Disk Image file (there's about 200MB of free space left over after I added the DMG). So I can only deduce from that that it is something specifically to do with the DMG itself. Though, as mentioned, I compared the DMG on my (fast) 64GB stick and the DMG on this problematic (slow) 32GB stick in Disk Utility/System Profiler (and I originally set them up in an identical way, as far as I am aware), and they seem to be the same. But one is performing achingly slow. Even dropping a file into the mounted DMG takes a few minutes to even think about it. It's very odd.
