Bitlocker to go unable to encrypt a drive

Hi All,
I am trying to enable Bitlocker to go in our domain. We are running Windows 7 Enterprise. All the devices have the TPM module installed and all fixed drives have been encrypted using Bitlocker. The encryption happens as the machine is build using SCCM 2012.
I am now trying to enable Bitlocker to go. I have set the gpo's as instructed
http://www.grouppolicy.biz/2010/01/how-to-use-group-policy-to-save-bitlocker-to-go-recovery-keys-in-active-directory-part-1/
As soon as I put in the USB drive I get an error when Bitlocker tries to encrypt the USB drive
"Bitlocker Encryption cannot be applied to this drive because of conflicting GPO settings. When write access to drives not protected by Bitlocker is denied, the USB startup key cannot be required." Contact sys admin ......
Is this because the hard drives are already encryted and there is a clash with the bitlocker to go encryption?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
The link you pasted above is mainly about "how to save “BitLocker to Go” recovery keys in Active Directory", did you want to achieve this? As I know, to set Bitlocker To Go, we just need to insert the removable drive, then turn on bitlocker,
type the passward.
And it is obvious to understand the cause of the error message, you have denied the access to write to the drive which is not protected by Bitlocker, so we're absolutly unable store an usb startup key. but what confuses me is that why there's an usb startup
key here, we usually use usb startup key when the device doesn't have an imcompatible TPM

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Bitlocker, Windows 8 and self encrypting drives

I am trying to install a Seagate Constellation.2 self-encrypting drive with Windows 8 for use with Bitlocker. Articles that I've read imply that Bitlocker will recognise the SED.
There's no problem with the installation but there is no indication that Bitlocker sees it as anything other than a normal drive.
If I try to encrypt the full drive with Bitlocker, it's obvious, from the time it takes, that it is software encrypting it.
I have read the article about 'encrypted hard drives' and note that it says that SEDs are not the same thing. Frankly, I don't understand this and neither do other people on the web who have written saying that SEDs are now supported by Bitlocker.
Can you help with this please?
    Thanks

The constellation ES.2 and ES.3 drives will not be able to be used as hardware encryption with Bitlocker on Windows Server 2012/8 they will just show as normal hard disks as your seeing and then you can use Bitlocker software encryption.
The reason they don't work is because Windows Server 2012/8 requires a OPAL 2 compliant drive and the Seagate constellation ES.2 and ES.3 drives are not OPAL 2 compliant drives. This is common across all vendors at the moment I was told, so until someone
releases a OPAL 2 compliant drive you will only be able to use bitlocker software encryption.

  • Unable to unlock external drive or repair (but can change password)

I have a Freecom 1TB USB 2 external drive with a single partition with Filevault 2 encryption enabled.
The Mac Air detects the drive and prompts for the password to unlock. Prior to this problem it was retrieved automatically from my Keychain (entry still there). An incorrect password immediately gives the window shake. The correct password results in either a prompt to re-enter a password after few minutes or considerably longer.
Disk Utility (run from a standard or admin account or in recovery mode)  appears to Verify and Repair the drive fine, but when the partition is selected I get:
    Verifying volume “1,000”
    Checking storage systemChecking volume.
    disk3: Scan for Volume Headers
Invalid Volume Header @ 0: incorrect block type
Invalid Volume Header @ 999709908480: incorrect block type
disk3 is not a CoreStorage volume
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
The Repair option is not available.
Earlier I was getting an "Unable to examine /dev/disk3: Resource busy" message on Verifying the partition.
Earlier I also got a message in the details of drive Verify or Repair in Recovery mode of "transaction group 12: cksum mismatch", though the final result of the Verify and Repair stated the drive was okay.
Oddly I seem to be able to change the password, but nothing else including switching off encryption. When the later is attempted it appears to accept the password but then stops stating there was a problem (no other details).
I have a second external drive with Filevault2 enabled and this connects fine although a password is prompted for even though I saved it to my Keychain previously.
Suggestions very welcome! Preferrably to fix or if that is not possible ways to potentially retrieve some of the data.

I'll answer my own question, which may help others.
I found no solution and reformatted the drive.
Not sure if my question was poorly worded but after no response I tried one of the main paid support sites. The expert who took up my question didn't seem at first to be aware of encrypting external drives under Lion. No viable solution was found, so I gave up and reformatted the drives.
This is the third time I have had issues with the stability of OSX formatted external drives, so enough is enough. I'm sticking with FAT32 (the 4Gb limit isn't a major problem) for all my drives except my Time Machine drive. No encryption on that drive either.

  • RDS 2012 Encrypted USB drives

So we are about a week into our RDS 2012 VDI roll out. We have made 100% thin clients, in fact we have even replaced the shell. unencrypted flash drives work just fine. They mount up and redirect. However encrypted flash drives are giving us problems.
It works if we drop back into the thin client and deencrypt but since we replaced the shell our end users can not do this. What options do i have here?

    Hi,
Firstly please explain what you want to perform. Additionally are you using BitLocker Drive Encryption on your server? Have you used RemoteFX feature on your server?
“Drive redirection does not provide low-level access to the redirected drive. As such, the following are not supported in the remote session: Managing BitLocker-encrypted USB storage “(Quoted from article).

  • BitLocker To Go Autounlock Problem on RAID1 Drive

I have a PC that I've been using BitLocker on for several years (first with Windows 7 and now with Windows 8.1).
    The motherboard is
equipped with a TPM.  I have an SSD boot (C drive) and RAID1 HDD data (D drive).  My children started noticing problems a few months ago.  They couldn't access the D drive.  At first I thought I had a problem with how I'd configured
Security on folders on the D drive, but I recently moved everything off the D drive and reformatted it.
During the re-configuration of the D drive I noticed that this drive was detected as a removable disk by BitLocker rather than a fixed disk.  I entered a password for BitLocker and setup the drive to autounlock.  I don't recall if this has always
been the case with Windows 8 or not, i.e., being detected as a removable disk?  Or if I somehow changed something in the BIOS or RAID configuration that made Windows 8 think this was a removable disk?  I haven't double checked all the settings yet,
but perhaps something is set to make the drive hot swappable and that's why Windows 8 designates this as a removable disk?  Although I have another computer with a similar configuration, but a different RAID controller, and the HDD on that controller
is hot swappable.  But I'm not having this kind of a problem with that computer, i.e., if a Standard user logs on first after a reboot they can read / write to the D drive.
When I first installed Windows 8 on this PC I moved the Pictures and Videos folders to the D drive.  It may be that it was only when the Music folders were getting too large and I also moved them to the D drive that my children started noticing problems?
Perhaps they weren't trying to access Pictures or Videos that often?  And perhaps autounlock of the D drive has never worked on this computer the way I would have expected?  For about a year we didn't have this problem with the D drive.  That
made me think another possibility is that a recent Windows 8 update might have changed the behavior of BitLocker?
What I've recently discovered is that after a reboot if I first logon with the Administrator account then the D drive is unlocked and anyone who logs on afterwards can read and write to the D drive.  But if after a reboot the first person to logon is
using a Standard account (one of my children) then the D drive is not accessible.
When setting up the D drive to autounlock I would have expected that to happen regardless of who logs on first.  I'm looking for assistance in how to get the autounlock to work on the D drive for every user.
But if this is some limitation of Windows 8 when BitLocker To Go is in use then I'd appreciate anyone who can help me understand why the RAID controller / drive seems to be detected by Windows 8 as a removable drive rather than a fixed drive.  I'm confident
that if the HDD were a fixed drive then autounlock would function as I expect.
I have another computer with a similar configuration.  But I am using a different RAID controller and a different type of motherboard.  I did not specifically check, after I noticed this problem last night, but I think on this computer the HDD
must be a fixed disk and that's why autounlock functions the way I'd expect?
    Thanks for your help.
P.S.  The SSD drive (C drive) is also encrypted with BitLocker.  I am able to reboot the computer and logon without any problems.  So on my C drive BitLocker is working as expected.
    Theokrat

As I suspected ... there is still a problem.  So I'm still looking for a better solution.
I booted the computer and no one logged on.  I then used File Explorer from a second computer (both running Windows 8.1).  I could see the C drive and Public folder (which is on the D drive) from the second computer.  I was able to connect
to the C drive without any problems.  When I tried to connect to the Public folder I got an error message to the effect that it was "inaccessible."
I then used Remote Desktop to connect from the second computer and logged onto the first computer.  Now that someone has logged onto the first computer I was then able to access the Public folder.
A second problem I've found has to do with using Microsoft Essentials for backups.  In a similar manner if the computer boots up (or perhaps is awakened from sleep?) the D drive is not seen by Essentials and thus not backed up.  I also found that
the next time someone logs on and the D drive is seen Essentials thinks a new drive has been added.  Which means I'd need to constantly update Essentials in order to keep this computer backed up.
The two problems I'm hoping to fix are:
    a)  Why does Windows think this RAID1 drive is a removable disk?  This is causing BitLocker To Go to be used when encrypting the drive and thus causing me other problems.
    b)  If I cannot get this RAID controller to be detected as a fixed disk is there a way to ensure the D drive is automatically unlocked?  No matter whether anyone logs on or not?
Thanks for any assistance you can give me in resolving either of these issues.

    Ok, some questions:
    1. Did you enable mysql in php.ini?
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/LAMP#MySQL
    2. Did you read / follow the torrentflux installation guide included with the installation?
    (if not, check here: http://www.torrentflux.com/)
    3. I have not worked with the package from AUR, the package form the official site (again, http://www.torrentflux.com/) works well for me. Did you try this?

  • Unable to Load USB Driver in LV for Total Phase's Aardvark I2C adaptor

I have tried to instal Total Phase's Aardvark I2C USB driver for LabVIEW on two computers and two versions of LV (8.5 and 7.1) without success. The Windows driver seems to be working fine as their command center gui terminal-esque program works without a hitch, but the LV DLL doesn't seem to work.
Attached is the very simple vi to find connected Aardvark USB devices (aa_find_devices). It always returns the same error code, 8002, which resolves to:
    AA_UNABLE_TO_LOAD_DRIVER
    -2
    unable to load USB driver
    From their documentation: http://www.totalphase.com/docs/aardvark_datasheet/sect005/#s5.9
This looks like perhaps the LabVIEW DL, "aardvark.dll" maybe having a versioning issue. So my question is this: Using LabVIEW, how does one debug dll dependencies and resolve issues like this? Do I need the source code for the lib?

    Dear Joe,
Let me start off by apologizing for the inconvenience you
have gone through.  I am an engineer at Total Phase.  We are
working on fixing this issue for our next release of the
Aardvark LabVIEW Driver.  This forum post was only brought
to our attention today.  In the future, you can also let
Total Phase know about these kinds of issues by emailing
[email protected]  We are very responsive through
    email or phone.
The problem you are experiencing has to do with versioning
issues between our DLL and USB driver.  Specifically, DLLs
before v5.xx must use the older version of our USB driver.
By replacing the DLL from our latest version of Control
Center, you have effectively upgraded the DLL that the
LabVIEW driver is using and made it compatible with v2.xx of
    the USB driver.
The most likely reason that smercurio_fc did not see a
difference between the DLL in Aardvark Control Center and
the LabVIEW driver is because he is using an older version
of Control Center and correspondingly an older version of
    the USB driver.
The reason that we have not packaged the LabVIEW driver with
latest DLL is due to the fact that a few functions have
changed their function prototypes (for example aa_open_ext
and aa_spi_write), and the VIs have not yet been updated
accordingly.  Although updating the DLL solved your USB
driver issue, it introduced this new issue.  If you try to
use these certain VIs, LabVIEW will error out.
We are currently working on updating the LabVIEW drivers to
work cohesively with the new DLL and USB driver, and this
should be available soon.  If you need immediate
availability to the functions with new prototypes you will
have to change it manually.  The other recommended option is
to simply revert back to the DLL that is packaged with our
LabVIEW driver and downgrade the USB driver back to v1.xx.
I will make sure to post again once the update is released,
and I once again apologize for the inconvenience.
    Best regards,
    Etai

  • Windows 8/8.1 devices, BitLocker and Exchange Activesync "Require encryption on device"

Recently I've been testing a change to our Exchange ActiveSync Policy , "Require encryption on device". This works fine for  Windows 8 phones, all iOS devices and some Android. However, W8 tablets with BitLocker on have an issue getting Activesync
    email.
Is BitLocker considered to be insufficient Encryption for an Exchange Activesync policy which enforces: "Require encryption on device".

    Hi dude -d,
"Require encryption on device Select this check box to require encryption on the mobile phone. This increases security by encrypting all information on the mobile phone."
Here is a link for reference of this policy
View or Configure Exchange ActiveSync Mailbox Policy Properties
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123994(v=exchg.141).aspx
Considering this policy is to increase the security by encrypting the device ,there maybe some conflicts here if the the device has been protected by the Bitlocker .This is just my own assumption.
To understand this policy more deeply ,it is recommended to ask for help from our Exchange Forum .They are more familiar with this policy and they may have more resources to help understand this issue .

I have loaded a custom dll into siebel server but it is throwing error "SBL-CSR-00500: Unable to create a Driver object from driver C:\Mydriver\cti.dll with Media-Type-String CTC Phone ".
It has been long time without any progress.
    Please help
    Thanks

    Hi tomhowell,
According to your description, my understanding is that you got an error when you created a site from a custom site template after migrading SharePoint 2010 to your server.
Did you have the original solution file of the site template? Please re-deploy the solution to your SharePoint site, then create a site from the new site template, compare the result.
Also use  SPDisposeCheck to indentify the memory leak:

  • Encrypt External Drive with TrueCrypt / PGP Signature

I want to use TrueCrypt to encrypt an external drive. I understand the new version of FileVault can do this but I prefer not to upgrade to Lion. I'd rather wait till Mountain Lion comes out later this year.
For those who have used both...Just wondering how TrueCrypt compares to FileVault in regards to encrypting an external drive.
Also, I am trying to install or execute the PGP Signature to ensure that the TrueCrypt software that I am downloading from the TrueCrypt's Web site is authentic and has not been hacked.
How do I run or install it? I double-click on the PGP Signature file, a window pops up and says it cannot find an application to open it. I even tried removing the ".sig" from the end of the file name and it say it cannot open the disk image.
There are instructions on the TrueCrypt web site for Windows users but none for the Mac users that I can see.

If you want better, more reliable security on a external drive, you should get a self encrypting external drive, these have a hardware based encryption, either a physical key and/or keypad to enter a password and do all the encryption/decryption on the drive itself.
No need for software means you can take your data to any secure machine and the computer thinks it just another drive. Software can become unrelaible or glitchy, subjected to updates/tampering. Hardwired requires physical possession of the device.
Also there are smalller portable USB thumb drives like Iron Key that also self-encrypt and have the advantage of being quickly discarded upon a threat.
