Bitmap and vector like Photoshop?

I am new to Fireworks and have worked with Photoshop. Photoshop is primarily a bitmap program, though you can work with vector graphics in it like you can in Fireworks. How does Fireworks work with both bitmap and vectors differently than Photoshop? Is it the same idea or is there a big difference with the way it handles this?

IMO Fireworks outshines PS in vector handling. In terms of the Pen tool, things are probably quite similar, but if you're creating vector shapes (custom or prebuilt) FW is a lot easier to work with.

Raster and vector..Photoshop to Illustrator

I created a logo in Photoshop (it is now a raster image), now need to enlarge it and have it printed on Tshirts and signs. Can I transfer it to Illustrator making it a Vector file, or does it need to be created in Illustrator to be a Vector file?

The difference between raster and vector graphics is far more than just resolution dependence. That's just one aspect. Just as important--even moreso in textile screen printing--is that vector artwork is built from objects. This makes all the difference in the world wihen it comes to practical production needs for "logos" and for screen printing.
For example: Okay, suppose the raster image of the "logo" is oversampled enough to avoid pixelation (which is actually less of an issue with screen printing) when enlarged to the size needed for the T-shirt. Someone's making a blunderbuss statement like "you can then color separate it" isn't even beginning to think through the practical requirements of the reproduction process. Yes, you can print color separations from a raster image. But what kind of separations do you get? Assuming a CMYK or RGB raster image, you'll get halftone dots. Halftone dots are inherently problematic in screen printing. Most common screen printing assumes line art and spot color, not contone art separated to halftones.
There are methods for creating raster artwork in Photoshop which will result in color separations suitable for spot color and screen printing separations, but it's far more involved than just designing in CMYK or RGB and then making some automagic "conversion." It requires just as much forethought and understanding of the process as building it correctly as vector artwork.
To advise you correctly, one has to know more about the specific situation in question regarding the specific original artwork and the capabilities of the screen printing house re halftones and color separations.
A similar set of considerations apply to signs (which you also mention.)
Trust me: If your focus is "logos" destined for screen printing and/or signage, and you intend to make it your standard workflow to create the original artwork in Photoshop and then use Illustrator as some kind of automagic "conversion" utility when you think you need vector graphics--then you are very much barking up the wrong tree, and are creating untold problems for yourself before you even start.

Bevel and emboss like Photoshop

Is there any easy way to get something like the 'bevel and emboss' effect in Photoshop? Short of bringing the paths into Photoshop and applying it there, of course...
I was toying a little bit with doing something like that using the drop shadow effect, but the shadow has to come on the inside... Any tips?
I would prefer to have it as a live effect - I have done it manually with vectors by duplicating/offsetting/trimming, but it is a fair bit of work...

Bitmap and Vector masks

1. It seems that vector masks can do the same thing as bitmap masks and more. Are there some advantages to creating bitmap masks over vector ones?
2. Does anyone know of any good examples of effects that can be created using a vector mask?

Groups can be used as masks, too.
Generally, I think vectors are more flexible than bitmaps; they can be freely resized without concerns about resolution. However, an advantage to bitmaps might be the ability to use the Brush tool or any of the other bitmap tools to edit the mask.
It really depends on the materials you're working with. If you have a bitmap that you want to use as a mask, then that's what you use. If you have a vector object, then that's what you use. Having the flexibility to use either is more significant to me than the advantages or disadvantages of one versus the other.

Is it possible to precomp text, then enlarge it and maintain it's crisp vector like edges?

I animated text over my company's new surgical kit, highlighting and flashing the text in sync with the different parts of the kit also flashing at the same points in time to explain the protocol. A fair bit of work in doing that. However it was a boring straght-on angle, so I precomped the whole thing and put the Power Pin effect on it for a more dynamic angle. Looks killer! I'm stoked! But wait, that text looks like it was rasterized and enlarged in Photoshop. Yes I enlarged the text slightly when I used the Power Pin effect but never rasterized it. Is this just the nature if After Effects or is there a precomping text and enlarging it while maintaining it's crisp vector like edges?

That worked except for the fact that the CR button moves things position! What is that about?
I precomped the text and the tray/art separtely then brought them into the template and pasted the same exact Power Pin effect to both of them in the same position, yet they were not lining up, as they were when I Power Pinned them together.
I adjusted that to match so the problem is fixed for now. Not ideal, but it will do. So one could say, if your going to enlarge/distort text, precomp it alone, cr it, then place it, then distort/enlarge it. Is there any plug-ins out there that can make this easier.

Unfortunately, adobe doesn't have photoshop elements 6 available for download, as far as i know, so your best bet is to either get an usb dvd drive or use an computer with a dvd drive and copy the contents of the pse 6 dvd to somethiing like
a flash drive and then copy the contents from that drive to your new computer.
Do you still have your older mac and it has a dvd drive?
You can share files between the two using airdrop or an ethernet cable.

Make sure you are dealing with the correct product for the serial number. If the serial number is for a full creative suite then you need to get the suite, not the individual application, and vice versa.
Unrelated to that, in case it helps, here is a link to another site. You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.

I came to Lightroom quite recently (in the last month!) from Photoshop Elements 11. I like the organization features in LR better, but for adjustments such as the ones that you mentioned I would leave LR and go back to Photoshop Elements 11, primarily because that is what I know. I don't use the subscription service, mainly because I already owned and installed the boxed version of Photoshop Elements 11 and adding it to a subscription service with Lightroom seemed redundant. I am sure someone in the community will (or has) comment(ed) that it is possible to whiten teeth and cure blemishes within LR, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Check out the TV Adobe free tutorials, particularly Julianne Kost's tutorials. She has a good presentation style and you might find the LR answer that you need with detailed instructions.

Anyone that buys an iMac should not have to buy "cheap". it's like putting "retread tires" on a brand new Farrari! Ugh!
To find a cheap version of PS is to locate an obsolete version only? Software surplus business may have some or check the obituary columns to see if any Photographers or Gaphic Designers have left some things behind?
Some options...enroll in a community college Multimedia class and you will not only have access to Photoshop, you'll have access to much more software for the price of the course. It will also qualify you as a student and you can get a discounted rate on the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription as well.
If you are only making "simple flyers" would not MS Word or OpenOffice software do the job for you? There are applications for that purpose and Photoshop is not the only way to skin this cat! Or you can always buy a box of Crayola's and make a pamphlet that way?
And as a bonus, you may learn something from the course you enroll in.

Easy steps
Locate the document in the Finder.
Control/Right-Click on its icon.
Select Show Package Contents
All images and embedded objects appear in ‘Data’ folder

Has anyone ever used their iPad to remotely connect to a iMac and use programs like Photoshop on their iPad?

Hi everyone,
I had an iMac at home, but I've recently taken on some freelance work and they would like me to come into the office every now and then. I don't want to purchase a laptop and I know you can remotely connect to your desktop with an iPad, but I need to know if anyone has ever done that and successfully used programs like Photoshop on their iPad. Is there lag time when trying to use the software? Or is it just not possible and I should consider getting a laptop again?

iPads are not exact laptop replacements. If you need to be using Photoshop, then buy a normal laptop computer.
Using a remote access app on an IPad or any tablet conputer to remote access your computer to operate will be quite a lot slower and clumsier than just having a laptop with a normal OS and Photoshop application installed.

There isn't a "remove color cast" command per se but there are Levels and Curves adjustments so you can effectively remove/diminish colors yourself.
