Bitmap graphics print poorly in PDF

For bitmap graphics, I find that the online version has to be
shown at 100%. When the true image is bigger and I specify a
smaller size, the image "crunches" in an illegible way. So I make
the image size correct for showing at 100%. But this same image
comes out ugly and often unreadable in the PDF version. This
problem occurs not only with screen shots but even with Visio
diagrams saved as GIF. How are people handling this problem?

ID @ 100%
PDF @ 100%
The PDF always looks this way, irrespective of the magnification. You can even see variations in size of each dot along the vertical line.
I've tried outputting from ID with and without compressed line art, and have adjusted Acrobat Pro to smooth (and not) for LCD screens. No dice.
One other thing: don't know why there's a size difference between ID and the PDF. Both set 100% @ 96 DPI. Odd.

  • Placed PDF Printing Poorly

Recently did an ad book that had a color inside back cover...it was a supplied PDF that I placed in my InD (CS6) doc, then supplied printer spread PDFs to digital print shop. The ad came out with drop shadows way out of position; ruined the ad. The printer blamed my PDF. I'd used the standard high quality printing export option when exporting the InD doc to PDF.
I tried printing the same PDF page on my color printer at office and it was fine, no problem at all.
Any ideas? See attached for side-by-side comparison of PDF the way it was furnished to printer alongside a scan of the page the way it was printed. The one on the right is the way it should've been printed.
    Thanks.

Peter, you mentioned:  He doesn't use/support InDesign (still a Quack shop).
I'll bet the "printer" placed your PDF in Quark for printing/imposition purposes.
This is a well known issue and has been going on forever. Even Quark has acknowledged issues with Quark 10 and has multiple updates.
I'll also bet that the "printer: has an older version of Quark with even more issues.
Ask them if they placed your PDFs into Quark for printing.
They may give you a honest answer, but they may not give you the complete truth, since this would mean that the issue was on their end and require a free redo of the job which costs them money.
Quark had a Best Practices: Transparency guide for QXP 8.1 which show the following:
And this was about a problem with placing a native QXP drop-shadow box over a picture in QXP
If they were having problems with elements that were created within QXP, I shudder to think of the issues they would have with PDFs created from other programs and placed in QXP

  • InDesign freezes when printing to a PDF and have Outlook open

I am not a patient person by nature. So, while I am waiting for my InDesign document to collect all its info before asking me where to save my printed PDF, I go compose an email in Outlook. When I do this, the dialog box for me to browse for the folder I would like to save the PDF to and the Outlook window disappear. What is going on?

This type of issue probably relates to the amount of system resources and virtual memory used by each of the programs - i.e. InDesign and Outlook - but not to bugs particular to either one. Outlook (including Outlook 2007) uses a tremendous amount of virtual memory (possibly up to a three gigabyte limit) and by extension, real memory when you have a large number of messages in your active InBox or whatever folder(s) are open. Similarly, when printing or exporting PDF, InDesign calls in a number of resources, especially the Adobe PDF Library and the Adobe Graphics Manager, that also have a tremendous hunger for virtual memory space, especially if you are working on a very complex document. When I've seen this type of problem or better when I proactively want to avoid this problem when I know I am exporting very large, complex documents, I close down Outlook and often save my InDesign document, close InDesign, and restart InDesign. Sometimes, rebooting my system minimizes this problem. And it is possible that you have specified too small a paging file or have run out of disk space for paging files if you let the system handle this matter automatically.
My perception is that with my migration of my main system to Vista 64-bit with a larger amount of main memory and larger available address spaces, I haven't recently seen this problem reoccur.
By the way, I've seen similar issues if you have InDesign and Photoshop open and then try to open Illustrator - it simply craps out without any rational message. Open Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop in that order and Photoshop won't hog the systems' virtual memory.

  • Printing versus Exporting PDF differences

I'm trying to export a pages version of business cards (Avery5371 format) to PDF so I can have it printed at Staples.  Interesting enough, the results I get differ between using Print>PDF, and export to PDF (which differ by the quality selected).  In general the use of Print includes all pieces of the page at some sort of level of quality, but use of export provides different (wrong) outputs for each resolution.  So it seems that the pdf conversion software is different for these functions and the new export function doesn't work.  Anyone else have any insight into this problem?  Do you know the quality of the print pdf function on the scale used by export pdf?

Printing should produce the same result as Export > PDF > Best
ie bitmap resolution is unaltered in pdf output except for the system generated transparency which by default is 72 dpi.
It did using Pages '09 and previous versions of OSX, but many things have changed in Mavericks and Pages 5.2.
My suspicion is that Pages '09 probably still does the better job in Mavericks but I haven't done the comprehensive test of all options yet.
…when I have the time and take the sharp blow to the head that will convince me Apple isn't a lost cause.

  • Printing an External PDF

I have a highly graphical PDF with a PRINT button on it. I want to be able to have it print an external PDF from our site that is a simple Black and White version.
Looking for some help to do this...
    Many thanks!

Printer control from within a PDF? Not possible unless you use Javascript and even this can be restricted or is very likely completely deactivated in the PDF viewer.

  • Framemaker 8 Embedded Graphic prints as a Gray box

Sometimes when I save my book as PDF, an imported graphic prints as a gray box in the PDF and then corrupts the framemaker source file.
It loses the graphic (an imported .WMF file) and substitutes a gray box.
Framemaker 8.0p277 on Windows XP SP2.
Has anyone else seen this problem ?

If it is imported by copy or as an OLE object, then it is known to happen. Try importing by reference.

  • How do I make color headings black, but color graphics graphics grayscale in my PDFs?

My documents have blue headings and color graphics. I leave all the colors in my web PDFs, but for press I need black headings and grayscale graphics. The Convert Colors function in Acrobat gives me grayscale on both. To get black headings for press I've been printing a second PDF from FrameMaker with Spot Color as Black/White, then doing Convert Colors in Acrobat to get grayscale graphics. This means I must make two PDFs from FrameMaker: one for web and one for press.
Is there any way in Acrobat 11 to convert my blue headings to black, while converting graphics to grayscale?

    >You can produce a grayscale PDF by printing to a Postscript file,
choosing Output > Color > Composite gray, and Distilling the PS file
(assuming you have the full version of Acrobat).
If you have a full version of Acrobat you can do that in one step by choosing AdobePDF as the printer. :)

  • Printing and Signing PDF Security Questions

    Hi,
I noticed one of the PDF security features for Acrobat 8.0 is to set the printing permissions between "None", "150 DPI", and "High Resolution". However, when I print between two PDF's with 150 DPI and max resolution, I honestly can barely notice the difference between the two (the 150 DPI is "slightly" worst, i.e. letters are slightly more jaggedly). I was wondering is this normal, as I was hoping the lower setting would make the printout hard to read, not just a "quick-print" (I used a Laser Printer with 1200 DPI). I don't mean to make a big deal out of it, but I personally do not think this a very useful feature from a security standpoint.
Secondly, I'm having trouble creating signable PDF's. I basically want the file to only allow a user to sign, and nothing else, so I set the "Changes allowed" to just "filling in forms and signing existing signature fields". But doesn't seem to work, because instead I have to set it to allow "any except extracting page". Only then can I sign the PDF, but then this also allows it to be changed (which I don't want). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing? Any help is appreciated!

It's a very common question, and as Michael says there's not a lot you can do. Even doing the imposition yourself is unlikely to help, as most commercial raster image processors (RIPs - the software which turns your document with its fonts, graphics etc into the pattern of dots needed to physically generate the image on the printing drum) need unencrypted files.
If the print shop has an ad-hoc workflow which supports encryption (such as printing direct from Acrobat in the way desktop users do), there are plugins for Acrobat to handle the page imposition; but it's not something native to the application and the printer will have to give you very precise directions as to what layout to create. Many print shops won't entertain that idea unless there's an overriding commercial reason, as it's too much hassle for them to deal with errors in the client plates. Worth asking, but I doubt they'll agree to it.
Given the need to send unsecured files to an external contractor for printing, your "protection" is in the form of the contract, not digital encryption. The former can be settled in court if they break the terms, the latter can be bypassed in ten seconds and you'll probably never know. If the files are truly too sensitive to send to anyone, it's time to get yourself a laser printer - these days the machines many local print shops rely on are in essence a color photocopier, and you can rent them for about the same price.

  • Brother laser printer not printing Acrobat 8 PDFs

My beloved Brother HL 5250DN laser printer was not printing Acrobat 8 PDFs, and since installing CS4 it won't print PDFs OR InDesign files. Help!
The PDF printing problem started suddenly about 6 months ago. Now, as I mentioned, it won't print from Acrobat 9 or InDesign CS4. This is greatly compromising my graphic design job search, as the Brother is my little workhorse! What could this conflict be? Why does it seem to be getting progressively worse? Thanks for your help, all!

If you haven't thrown away the DMG file yet. You deleted using wrong application.
    Use Printer Utility.
open Printer Utility and remove the instance of your printer.
    Remove from list.
now open the Printer Driver File you download. look and see if there is an Uninstall. If so, run it. On HP Drivers if you hold down Control or option key it will change from installer to uninstaller.
Now this time Install driver let it install everything.
Now open Printer Utility and have it to locate Printers. Your Printer should pop up in list. Now choose and make it the default Printer for system.
Now open Acrobat, (if you have Acrobat 9, hope and pray, you don't have the no show printer in page setup) in setup choose desired printer the choose type paper,  (8.5X11 letter)  then choose orientation Portriat.
Now click on Page atributes, and click on Save as default. This set the default setup Acrobat will go to when first opened.
Now open a PDF and Try.
Repeat with inDesign, note: Using your printer, only prints already created PDF's does not create Pdf's.

  • After sofware update, computer wont print or create PDFs

On Thursday the computer asked to install updates to some pieces of software, one of them being Adobe Acrobat. I installed the updates. During the installation there was some error message, but it seemed like the updates were installed fine. However, immediately following this, I find that I'm unable to print, or create PDFs (export a document to PDF format from Quark).
In Word, the error message I get when I try to print is "Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected in Print Center. You may need to print again or adjust your printer settings". I went to the Print Center, and the printer is present, and selected as default.
In quark, when I try to export to a PDF the error message just reads "Unable to open Printer".
HELP! My GF is a graphic designer, she uses this printer for her work, and shes about to kill me. I dont know where to start to figure out the problem.

P-Funk, it is always good practice to Repair Permissions before and after any major upgrade or updates. From the Application/Utilities Folder open Disk Utility, select First Aid from the upper tabs and your hard drive in the upper left hand column. Now run the repair and see if it solves the issue.
If not, boot up from the install CD, once it mounts (X window) go up to the Main Menu under Installer and open Disk Utility. Select First Aid on the right tabs and your hard drive on the upper left column, now run the Repair Disk. If it does not repair run it again. Now select your start up volume in the right column and Repair Permissions. Now quit DU then go up the Main Menu under Installer to Change Startup Disk, select your startup volume and choose Restart.
If this does not solve the issue you may need to go to the Abode site and download a new copy of Acrobat Reader.

  • Printing problem with .pdf

27" iMac (2012), OS X 10.9.1, Canon MF4770n laser connected by ethernet cable through AirPort Extreme, HP C4200 connected directly via USB
The Problem:  I received a .pdf file via e-mail and downloaded it.  It consisted of a series of forms in unknown original format.  I needed to print them out, sign them and return them.  I opened .pdf in Preview but when I tried to print it, I got only blank pages from the printer.  The printer seemed to be operating normally in all other respects.
    What I have tried:
    1.  Successfulloy printed material from other applications using the same computer and Canon printer.
    2.  Successfully printed a different .pdf file from Preview using the same computer and Canon printer.
    3.  Successfully printed the offending .pdf from Preview on the same computer and the HP ink jet printer.
    4.  Successfully printed the offending .pdf from Adobe Reader using the same computer and Canon printer.
Since I was able to print the .pdf using Adobe Reader, this problem is not critical but it is rather mysterious.  Any suggestions would be appeciated.

Using ASK.Com - my favorite web browser - does not require you to download anything to use it just enter the url -
    I entered the following:
Why is my HP laser printer printing slow
Below is just one of the documents - this one is HP support.

*just a heads up - whenever you have problems with a printer
    1. stop the print queue on your system
    2. shut the printer power off for about a minute to clear any  printer memory
    3. turn on the printer
    4. start the print queue
*also - using ASK.com have also found answers on this site without the struggle of going through searching this site.

  • Is there any way to disable the popup message I get when I print to a PDF?

When I print to a pdf by selecting the Adobe PDF Converter as my printer, I always get a popup in my tray "Your PDF file 'document name' has been created".
This is annoying when I printing a bunch of different documents at a time.  I know the PDF has been created because it opens up, so why the popup?
HOW DO I DISABLE THIS POPUP???
    Help!!

If you're talking about the balloon tip that appears in the tray area, I don't know of a way to disable it for just Acrobat, but you can for all programs by modifying the registry: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307729

  • Unable to Generate Printed Documentation in PDF Format

This past week I started having a consistent error when attempting to generate a Printed Documentation layout. This error reads "Internal error encountered,  Failed to generate Printed Documentation."  Prior Printed Documentation builds on this same project completed fine. Nothing was done to the Help project between the times when this worked and when it no longer was able to create Printed Documentation.
I receive this error even if I generate an entirely new "blank project" build, and then attempt to create a Printed Documentation build from this new blank project.  Researching this error, I see this has been a reoccuring problem with this product for some time. The few threads that list the problem as having been "fixed" provide resolution steps that have not worked in my case. Right now I am waiting for our IT Helpdesk people to re-install the Suite. Hopefully this will resolve this problem.
Additional information on this problem - PDF Printed Documentation is failing - the HTML build works fine. If I select just a .DOC Printed Documentation output, this also works correctly. The resulting Word document looks good, although hyperlinks do not work within this Word document. I have reloaded Office 2003 as a troubleshooting effort, but this has nbot resulted in any change in symptoms.
The entire error text is enclosed below, although several other people have also done this in past entries. The few lines that read "Warning, and then report a style issue is NOT the problem here. As stated earlier, when I do this same Printed Documentation build on an entirely new "blank project" it does not work, and the Output text in that case does not contain any such "Warnings" about Styles.

If I select ONLY the Word DOC Output format in the Printed Documentation
setup, the output is created without an error (output text below).  Links do work within
this Word document (a symptom change since installing patch 8.0.2).
When I use this Word document to create a PDF (using the Adobe PDF
printer driver) a PDF is successfully created, however no bookmarks are
created in the bookmarks panel and none of the links in this PDF work
(although they are created looking like they will work, i.e., blue
    underlined text).

  • Excel sheets with defined print areas to pdf

    Hello
I am trying to convert an Excel file with multiple sheets and defined print areas to pdf using Automator. The problem is that the action "Convert Format of Excel Files" prints everything on all sheets (even information outside the defined print areas).
Does anyone have a solution to this?
    Thanks!

  • I am trying to print all the PDF pages in a range of 5 pages but can only print one page at a time . . . It will print the current page, but not all or pages 1-5.  Can this be overcome?

I am trying to print all the PDF pages in a range of 5 pages but can only print one page at a time . . . It will print the current page only, but not all or pages 1-5.  I need to go to the next subsequent page and command to print current page; continuing with this procedure until all pages are printed one at a time. Can this be overcome?

You can use printPages(1, 5), however I need to know how you print current page.
