Bitmap or Vector

I simply need to know if Aperture is a Bitmap or Vector file format. It is for a project I am doing and I need to make sure my files will work for the project. Thank you so much!

Do you need vector?

  • Bitmap and vector like Photoshop?

I am new to Fireworks and have worked with Photoshop. Photoshop is primarily a bitmap program, though you can work with vector graphics in it like you can in Fireworks. How does Fireworks work with both bitmap and vectors differently than Photoshop? Is it the same idea or is there a big difference with the way it handles this?
    Thanks.

IMO Fireworks outshines PS in vector handling. In terms of the Pen tool, things are probably quite similar, but if you're creating vector shapes (custom or prebuilt) FW is a lot easier to work with.

  • Type Creates as bitmap not vector

Working in CS5.5 (Photoshop 5.1), new text is created as crude bitmap instead of vector.  Illustrator creates type in vector.  Fireworks (never really use) created higher resolution raster type.
Made a few of the changes in the self help suggestions, but it's not crashing.  Is this a reinstall issue.  I upgraded from CS4

Your using either the Horizontal or Vertical Type Tool (one of the first two on the list) and not one of the Type Mask Tools (the bottom two on the list)?
You have Anti-alias set to something other than None?

  • Converting Bitmap to Vector

I would like to change a bitmap image to a vector (eps)file. Can I take a bitmap design and change the image/design to a vector image, or do I have to trace the image and recreate it as a vector image? How do I accomplish this?
I am using Element 4.0, OS xp
    Thanks for your assistance.

"or do I have to trace the image and recreate it as a vector image"
yes, but you can't do this in Elements. The ideal program to do this would be Adobe Illustrator tho Full version photoshop also has some vector editing capabilities....it would depend on the complexity of your bitmap image.

  • Bitmap or vector based type?

In CS5, I have read conflicting info that describes type in CS5 as vector based, similar to how it is in Illustrator, and other info that describes it as being composed of bitmaps.
    1. What is it? Vector or bitmap while it is inside a .PSD?
    2. I remember way back in the early days of Photoshop, people would import their .PSD into Illustrator to add type. Is there any reason to still do that now?
    Thanks.

There are important distinctions to consider.
    As I understand things.....
Live type, is vector type, the same as Illustrator or Indesign. It contains all the vector data as well as hinting. Hinting is a technology which tells output devices not only what to draw but how to draw it, as in, draw this line fist starting from here. Hinting is exceptionally helpful when working with small type sizes (roughly 10pt or smaller). PSD layered files with Live Type will always print well because the type contains Hinting.
Files such as EPS or PDF can contain vector data, therefore if you save a Photoshop document as an EPS you get vector outlines of the type. However, vector outlines do not contain Hinting. So, if you have type smaller than 10pts, Photoshop may not be the best tool to use since small type benefits greatly from Hinting.
TIFF, JPG, BMP, etc, are raster formats without vector data. So, in these cases you get bitmap art which appears like type, not live type, or even vector outlines. The "type" is subject to pixelation just as any raster data is.
Based on the above, it's your choice what to use. Chances of the naked eye seeing the difference between 8pt type with hinting or without are slim, but it's there. As a general rule, I don't set type in Photoshop for print projects. That is, unless it's display type which is to be seen more as art than type.

  • Bitmap and Vector masks

    1. It seems that vector masks can do the same thing as bitmap masks and more. Are there some advantages to creating bitmap masks over vector ones?
    2. Does anyone know of any good examples of effects that can be created using a vector mask?
    Thanks in advance.

Groups can be used as masks, too.
Generally, I think vectors are more flexible than bitmaps; they can be freely resized without concerns about resolution. However, an advantage to bitmaps might be the ability to use the Brush tool or any of the other bitmap tools to edit the mask.
It really depends on the materials you're working with. If you have a bitmap that you want to use as a mask, then that's what you use. If you have a vector object, then that's what you use. Having the flexibility to use either is more significant to me than the advantages or disadvantages of one versus the other.

  • Converting bitmap to vector image?

    can this be done?

Depending on the artwork, yes, results can be quite acceptable - it does depend on the software used as well. Vector Magic does a much better job than most, even identifying true circles, ellipses, squares, creating nice curves, and so on, even based on low res artwork.

But to achieve a perfect result means manual work.

  • Best way to export vector animation as bitmap animation

    Hello -
we have some very complex animations that, for performance reasons, we want to have them be bitmaps at runtime. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to do this. I don't think using the cacheAsBitmap feature will help us out at all - these animations are constantly changing frames and therefore the cache won't help us much.
For example, maybe i can write a jsfl script to copy each frame and paste it into a new .fla as a png instead of as vector art, but I haven't explored that option much.
    any helpful ideas?
    thanks in advance.

    Can you explain that more?
cacheAsBitmap only caches the bitmap after the vectors have drawn, and each time the animation changes frames, new vectors need to be drawn, so the cache is invalidated.
If the animation is originally all bitmaps, no vectors need to be drawn at all - and would therefore be less CPU intensive.

  • Bitmap images to Vectored images

Is there a way really one can use to convert bitmap images into vectored images?
I ask this question in response to a problem that I have. I take photos using a camera of resolution 72 pixels per inch and then process them in a program I have written in Java. I then print cards as the output of the system processing. The picture quality I then produce is a worry. The images are blurred and they rather look like zoomed bitmap images. Its not very disgusting but its something the clients are complaining about.
I have tried editing the images in different photo editors but it still remains a question. I have tried to change the resolution of the images but still the problem persists. This the led me to thinking that the reasons could be:
    1. the printer I am using is printing at a different resolution with the resolution of the camera.
    2. the images are bitmaps and so since I am changing the height and width (propotionally though), that could be leading to distortion of the images slightly. Hence I am looking for a bitmap to vector image convetor.
Suggestions with regards to where I could be going wrong are very much welcome.
    Thanx in advance

  • How do I convert a bitmap/jpg type image to vector graphics/editable outline?

Corel Draw 5 did this very nicely but it's obsolete and I can't load it onto this machine (HP all-in-one Pavilion desktop with Windows 8).
I am working with hand-drawn images but since I need to manipulate the outline/s with a 4 - 12 pixel tool, it would be great to just be editing nodes instead.  Creating the image from scratch as a vector graphic would be a horrible large amount of work and is not feasible at this time.
Is there any way other than Corel Draw 5 to make the conversion from bitmap-type images to editable vector graphics, ie: editable nodes?
    Thanks.
PS - I don't have $700 - $1000 to spend on  software at this point but do have Photoshop Elements 11, Premiere 11 and Lightroom, plus GIMP and the usual.  Where should I start?

For occasional conversions, did you consider 'online bitmap to vector' conversions ? Do a Google search for that.
For more advanced and free solution, consider inkscape. It's a real vector drawing tool and can convert bitmaps.

  • Can we create AI template that can be rendered into vectors

    Hi Everyone.
Sorry if I am asking a repeated question.
I am trying to create a script ( or find a third party tool ) that will convert PDF/Image to vector for engraving.
Just like this page "Precision Bitmap To Vector Conversion Online- Vector Magic"
I have tried Inkscape for this but the SVG file generated by this tool is no good for engraving.
So now I am seeking solution in Adobe illustrator.
I know that this is feasible as people have done this.
    Thanks in advance.

It is possible to record actions to create automatic image traces & expand them (if necessary), then play the actions via script.  However, it can depend on the structure of your document, how you can accomplish this.  Also, the Illustrator version must be >= CS6
You can try to make a first experiment by manually using image trace to make an Image Trace art item in Illustrator and do no further action, then send to engraver.  If your engraver recognizes the vector lines in the Image Trace object, that will be most likely all you need- otherwise, you may need to add the action to expand the trace object into lines.

  • Animating a movie file using vectors

    Hey,
I'm trying to do what i do with a bitmap image to a movie
file. I just go to modify/bitmap/trace and it traces my bitmap into
vectors and makes it look all animated and such. I would like to do
the same thing for a movie file that i have. Is there a possibility
to do that in flash, if not, what program should i be using? thank
    you for your help.

One frame at the time, unfortunately. Perhaps using FLJS you
    could write a commend
to do multiple frames at the time but not all frames will use
    same setting and you
might end up redoing the setting, wasting more times.
Other programs that trace well , Corel Trace and Adobe
    Streamline.

  • Understanding vector art

If I need to use some vector clip art, but I have to guarantee that's it 100 percent grayscale with no color, I understand that I should open it in Illustrator and change it to grayscale. That's the safest option, right?
I work with a designer who chooses to use Photoshop for the same mission. He opens the vector art in Photoshop, changes it to grayscale and then sizes it to the way he wants.
If I use Illustrator to work with vector art, the advantage is that the art stays a true vector image, right?
If my designer uses Photoshop, that means that he is rasterizing (bitmapping) the vector image and once he re-sizes it, that's the size it will be.
    Am I right on this?

I would say Scott makes the point very well Illy to Photoshop is if you need to bring Illy art to be used with photoshop fie because it is better to create that kind of art in AI.
Also I do not see why you would have to resize in Photoshop you can export to psd format and choose your options at export time such as resolution.

  • Vector with InDesign

    Hi All,
    I have a question.
One of our engravers is asking us to send him a "vector" graphic of the artwork. What kind of formats are "vector" and can I do it with Indesign. The file is .indd
    thanks,
    Alex

PDF, EPS, AI. Note that any of these formats can *contain* bitmaps, but
vector information will be retained in vector format.
Vector artwork (drawings, type) consists of instructions like "start at
X=0, Y=0, end at X=600, Y=600, draw 2 pt thick black line between those
points". As such, vector artwork has no maximum resolution. It prints at
the resolution of the output device.
Bitmap artwork (photos, screencaps) consist of a grid of dot positions,
each dot position filled in or not filled in, each dot position having a
color assigned to it (or a lack of color). As such, bitmap artwork
contains a finite number of dots. That number (expressed generally as
pixels per inch) determines the maximum resolution the graphic can be
    printed at.
