Bitrate drop in multi video chat

We've been using iChat for 3-way inter-office video chat for about a year. In the last three months or so, we've noticed a drop in video quality. The bitrate (shown in the Connection Doctor) drops from about 500kbps to 100kpbs or less as soon as we add the third office to a chat.
So, I ran some tests. I got 2 MacBook Pros and 1 iMac, all running 10.5.1, all less than a year old. I hooked them up via cable to the same LAN (AirPort Extreme routing). With any combination of 2 computers, I got bitrates between 1500 and 2300 kbps. As soon as a third machine was added, the host machine's bitrate dropped to 200kpbs or less. The other machines would drop, but only to about 500 to 1500 kpbs. The Network Activity monitor confirmed the Connection Doctor's bitrates. CPU loads were <40% the whole time. The same thing was observered whichever machine hosted the video chat.
I understand that resolution will drop when you go from 2-way to 3 or 4-way video chat, probably from a max of 640x480 to 320x240. But this is a much worse drop.
Has anyone else seen this? I'm wondering if Leopard, or one of the recent Quicktime patches, broke the multi-way video chat, since I don't think it was this bad before. Three current machines on a LAN shouldn't see a bitrate drop.
Any help would be appreciated.

iChat 4 pushes Video to the Graphics card rather that the Processor and any RAM you have.
Close each ichat
Copy and Paste the bold text below in every Terminal and hit enter
/Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
(you could do one computer at a time but that would mean more repeats)
This will in fact launch iChat and create a log of doing so.
The log will continue as you start a Chat.
This may highlight if one Graphics card is of lower spec and slowing the thing down.
The Log will be very very long.
Quit iChat before Terminal.
Save the log(s) somewhere like TextEdit
Spend some time going through them to identify when the Video chat started and when the third person was added.

  • I lost the ability to do multi-video chat

I was trying to do a video chat with a friend and kept getting a not enough bandwidth error.
After trying to get it to work, i lost the ability to do a multi-video chat. Basically it just isn't an option (same with multi-audio chat).
How do i get that back

    This is a difference though,
Achieving data rates up to 54 Mbps requires that all users have an AirPort Extremeconnect to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. Some ISPs are not currently compatible with AirPort and AirPort Extreme. Range may vary with site conditions.
Compatible ISP and telephone services required. Your ISP may not support all V.92 features. Modem will function according to V.90 standards if V.92 services are not available. Actual modem speeds lower; speed depends on connection rate and other factors.
    Just good to know.

  • 2 X person video chat for Intel Qs

Hey I know the specs required for doing a multi person (eg, more than 2 people) video chat for PowerPC processors, however I was wondering what the spec requirements are for the Intel ones... I am primarily directing this towards the Mac Mini Solo v. Duo which I am assuiming the Solo could be the only one that might have limitations (like my poor powerbook...).
SO my question is can a Mac Mini Solo HOST a multi person video chat OR is it like my powerbook and other "slower" apples that can only join multi chats yet cannot host them? AND if the Solo cannot HOST a multi person video chat CAN it at least JOIN a multi person video chat?
AND finally JUST to make sure there are no compatabilities problems, can a intel based apple multi-video chat with a powerpc apple?
    Thank you,
    TM

    Hi T.M.,
Go to System Preferences and then Quicktime.
    Select the Streaming tab.
In the drop down se the speed to match your download speed.
If it faster than 1.5meg then use 1.5 meg.

  • How many video chats can you use with this server?

I am looking to develop a multi-video chat app that's easy to
build. Can I use Stratus with this? Or do I need to use FMS.

none of the video streams will pass through Stratus. Stratus
only enables end-to-end streams. You are limited only by the amount
of bandwidth the client ends have as far as how many different
    streams can be flowing.
if you need to relay streams through a server (the to-many
case, or the end-to-end is blocked by firewalls or certain NAT
configurations cases), you'll need to use FMS.

  • Multi Video Icon Not Showing Up

I am hopping someone will have some advice for me. I am unable to partake in multi video chat conferences. One on one works great. The icon for multi video chat does not show up and I am unable to be invited into a muliti video chat.
I am not running any apps in the background that would be using up bandwidth. I have read the help and FAQ and I think I have done everything suggested to address the matter. Nothing I have currently tried has made a difference.
    Any Suggestions?

  • Skype video chat keeps knocking out internet conne...

I am using the BT Broadband Home Hub 2.0 and my BT Broadband WiFi connection is usually consistent from the time I switch my computer on to the time I switch it off.
Only when I do a video chat through Skype does my internet connection usually drop out.
I have just done a speed test through BT.com and it's results are as follows:
    Connection speed: 12.3Mb
    Download speed: 10.7Mb
    Upload speed: 0.81Mb.
According to BT, these are all good, so why does my connection drop out when video chatting through Skype?
Do I need a better broadband router (staying with BT Broadband)?
Do I need faster broadband by getting BT Infinity instead?
Or are there some configurations/settings I can change with BT Broadband and/or Skype to ensure dropouts like this won't happen.
Hope somebody can advise me on this.
    Thanks.

If you are using the normal default connection settings for Skype, then it will try to route incoming calls via your connection, which can result in dropped connections.
Look at the advanced connection settings on Skype, and untick the options to use incoming connections and uPnP. Basically untick all boxes, then shut down Skype, and restart it. See if it helps.
Its not going to work very well over WifI anyway.
There is also a software bug in the earlier home hubs, which can result in the IDS (Intruder Detection System) log overflowing, resulting in loss of DNS connectivity. The IDS tends to be very active when incoming connection attempts are made.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

  • How to multiperson Video Chat!!! HELP!

Ok, my 2 friends and I all have IMac g5, 20 Inch computers. My friend and I onlyt have 512 Mg, and my other friend has 1 g. we can all video chat one way, but when we want to add the + is gray... Can we not host multi video chats with our specifications? What do we need?
    Thank you

    Hello, Steven,
Sorry you are having problems, but the people who have been testing with me say 10.4.2 update has helped them. I see you are still showing 10.4.1.
Try the suggestion in Defcom's thread: How did you update to 10.4.2.
I suggest maintenance before and permissions repairs
    b before AND after
installing the update. See Gulliver's Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance FAQ for why.

  • Multi-way Chat is Gone

    Hi all
I can't seem to do multi-way chat anymore, anyone else experiencing this? I can see other people's icon showing the multi-way chat option, however my icon in my buddy list is as it was in Panther. I can't host multi-way or join multiple chat conferences.
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Mark

Thanks for working with me Ryan.
The above Terminal command didn't seem to work for me. I do have sufficient bandwidth, though. My current up and down speed is around 9.0 Mbps. For what it's worth, I am not running the Broadband Tuner. The result of the iChat log terminal command is at the bottom of this post.
Here's everything I know, and why I moved my entire ~/Library folder (don't worry -- I'm a developer, I didn't delete it, I just moved it out of reach for one log-in -- all is fine):
    - I installed Security Update 2005-009 immediately before seeing this issue.
    - Under my account, the icon for multi-person video chat never appears (just one-to-one video).
    - On the same computer, with the same setup, if I log out of my account and log into another admin account on the computer, multi-video chat works flawlessly.
    - Even while still successfully multi-video chat 'blessed' under the alternate user, if I fast user switch to my account, I still only have one-to-one video ability.
    - Sensing that this issue was related to my specific user account, I tried removing more and more of my preferences to see if there was one that would make my account work successfully. I ended up removing the entire ~/Library folder (all of what makes my account unique), and logging in with a brand-new, created-on-the-fly ~/Library account, which still only produced the one-to-one icon.
    - I am at a loss. What could the Security Update have changed that would only affect one user, but affect that user even after completely wiping the user's library?
Here is the result of the iChat log you requested:
    2005-12-01 11:57:17.402 iChat[287] CFLog (0): CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1103 (0x44f), port = 0x3e03, name = 'com.apple.iChat.ServiceProvider'

    2005-12-01 11:57:17.407 iChat[287] CFLog (99): CFMessagePortCreateLocal(): failed to name Mach port (com.apple.iChat.ServiceProvider)
Any ideas? Thanks so much for your interest and willingness to help. It is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • "computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat" ?

2 of us have MacBook Pros, third guy has new MacBook.
    Our MacBook's have OS X 10.5.8,
The new MacBook has OS 10.6.1.
Me and the other person can iChat with 3 other ppl,
but when we added the new guy as a buddy, neither one of us could get him to come up.
He said When the call came in, two (2) video screens popped up and if he hit accept on
either one, it would decline on our end. (this happened no matter which MacBook Pro initiated the convo)
We then had the MacBook try to initiate the 3 way and it came up with an error that said
"computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat"
I've never even heard of that.
Is this a glitch, or a setting that needs to be changed?
Seems weird that the older models do it fine, but the new one is not configured right, but maybe we're missing something.
    thx

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
You are saying that, no matter who Hosts, when they invite the 10.6.1 Buddy he gets two Invite windows ?
This sounds like he is connected to the Internet twice.
On Sending the Visible Invite iChat does not check the validity of the Return Message.
You can be logged in twice for Text Chatting so it is not an uncommon state to exist.
However in most cases this is either two apps or two computers.
When iChat gets past the Visible Invite stage as only one reply get returned for the Acceptance it moves into sending a SIP invite separately on a different port and part of this Process is to confirm where the Visible Invite went to is where the SIP return data is coming from.
If there are two connections to the Internet at his end (and there are several causes) you will get an Error 7 showing when the Video chat is ended by all parties.
Error 7 = Remote IP Invalid
The Message you are getting may point to another problem and that is he is not on an Internet connection fast enough to join a 3 or 4 way Video chat.
He needs to have at least 384 kbps as an Upload and not capping the iChat Bandwidth below the 500kbps mark. (iChat Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down)

  • Multi-person video chat

Yesterday I was able to use the multi-person video chat on iChat. Today I can't. I have no idea why. My friend also has multi-person video chat capabilities but today her video chat icon is a single-person one. Is this just a problem with my iChat? Or is everyone having it? How can I fix it?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

iChat since iChat 2.0 AV has always read the "Automatic" setting in Quicktime System Preferences as a zero (0).
It has been mentioned for a long time and in several places that it should be set to something that sees the setting as a high enough number.

  • Text chats drop while video chat

Anyone experiences that text chats drop while you do video chat? In video chat I do not have any problem, but text chats become one way after few minutes of connection. I would appreciate if anyone can tell me why this happen and how to fix it.
    Thank you,

    HI Ksugaya,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
It does seem at the moment that at times the AIM servers get swamped and drop connections.
In Group chats you tend to get many posts arriving altogether without actually being dropped.
In 1-1 chats it is difficult to judge if you have been dropped from the chat as the Buddy list is still active.
There is no real fix for this at the moment.
Try Direct Chat (Group with 1-1 only)

  • Multi Person Video Chatting

I have always been able to video chat and all of a sudden, it only allows me to video chat with one other person. I go to the connection doctor and under my capabilities, it says "Slow Network" next to "Join multi person video" and there is a red X. There is another macbook in my household and it runs fine with no problems in the network

    Hi,
iChat "reads" what the Internet Speed is as it starts up.
Lots of factors based around what is going on when iChat is Started up (end of Boot sequence as ichat is Login Item or waking from Sleep) can get a false figure written to the iChat .plist
I would start with a computer Shut down then Restart then launch iChat.
If that does not help delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat
This .plist is in Your HOme Folder/Library/Preferences which you will have to go to Manually

  • Multi person video chats

Is it possible to do a multi person video chat with a G4? I'm running a 1.6GHz PowerPC G4 with 896Mb of RAM. Thanks.

you should be able to participate in one, but not host (meaning initiate) one. i have a powerbook G4, and when i have a three way chat with my mom and brother, either my mom (intel mac mini) or my brother (imac G5) has to initiate the chat from the start.... i can initiate a two way video chat no problem, but if a third person is invited after i initiate the chat, it wont work because my computer is the central hub and isnt fast enough to juggle all them info packets....
