Bitstream Vera Fonts
Hello,
Installed Arch on 5 different computers and planning on world-domination with this awesome distro (!!)
However, one of the first search-queries I made in the forums was for help installing Bitstream Vera fonts. Nothing much turned-up. Being a recovering Windows-aholic, I am very fond of the high-quality, free, Vera fonts(http://www.gnome.org/fonts/).
Beyond the basic help-file in the src's, can anyone recommend the best way to install in Arch? My guess follows:
1. Get fonts: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ … 10.tar.bz2
2. Install as prescribed to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
3. Run 'mkfontscale', then 'mkfontdir' in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/
4. Copy 'local.conf' into /etc/fonts/
5. fc-cache -v
6. Now what?
Is the base Fontconfig in Arch set-up to auto-detect the new fonts and apply the local.conf or does it need some tweak'n? (we loves tweak'n)
Thanx.
Mozilla without XFT should NOT use these fonts. No-big-deal. The standard adobe fonts in Mozilla are perfectly usable--however, after viewing some pages in Konqueror with XFT/Vera fonts.....well I'm sure you'll agree it is somewhat easier on the eyes to have a little anti-alais'n occasionally.
Hmmm. If I'm not mistaken, having seen these fonts in Red Hat 9/Gnome/OpenOffice 1.1.RC1 from:
http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/gavindi … noarch.rpm
I'm wondering if the font setup in RH9 does additional 'tweak'n'(!?) It seems that either Gnome(alone) or RH9/Gnome(combo) looks even better ??? Or is the KDE in Arch not compiled against XFT ??? Hmmmm. I'm really try'n, here, to be helpful to those newbie's from across the Windows "Trail-of-Tear's" to not be discouraged by the lack of good, free, non-MS, fonts in LINUX .... especially ARCH-LINUX. Hope this doesn't seem trivial to the long-time *nix'ers. I just know how important screen-fonts are to the less-technically-inclined user a.k.a. the new potential LINUX user.
Thanx for your time and consideration.

[SOLVED] Bitstream Vera missing characters under Qt
Hey everyone!
I've installed some KDE apps (including the whole KDE on my smaller desktop), and I've met a strange and very annoying glitch. Under every Qt app the letters used in the hungarian language (ő,ű) show up as rectangles when I'm using the Bitstream Vera fonts.
On the other hand, these fonts work fine under GTK2, under gedit for example.
What could be wrong here? Have I missed an option regarding my locale, fonts or something?
BTW, my LANG variable is set to "hu_HU".
Thanks for the help!You also might wanna look at the DejaVu Fonts:
http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
though they address mainly the Chech and Polish language. I dunno if
Hungarian is covered in Iso8859-2? which is I think the target of DejaVu.

Ttf-hunky-fonts pkgbuild: bitstream vera with non Eng chars
Saw it, built it, posting it :-)
I admit it - not all characters are perfect. But this is the first version and author promised to repair it soon. Still, if you want to have Bitstream Vera TTF fonts (originally lacking nonEn chars) with additional characters ("Baltic, Central European, South European and other languages, including Maori, Welsh and Esperanto") you can try it. It can co-exist with other ttf fonts (including original Bitstream Vera). Font names are Hunky Serif and Hunky Sans.

Safari Bitstream Vera Sans font not displaying
Hello,
I have a font display problem in Safari 4.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Safari 4.0.3, and web pages which specify in the CSS file:
"font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"
are not displaying properly. The entire page, except where a different font is used, is replaced with a character that looks like letter "A" with a square around it.
If I inspect the text element, then uncheck the font-family line, all characters display readably. What could be happening?
Thanks!I was having this problem, too. I fixed it by I fixed it by downloading the font via the "Download" button at http://www.dafont.com/bitstreamverasans.font, decompressing the downloaded zip file, selecting the four ".ttf" files in the Finder, right-clicking and choosing "Open With.../Font Book.app", clicking "Install Font" on the resulting window. Then, in order to clear the font cache, I did the following in a Terminal window:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
sudo atsutil databases -removeUser
sudo atsutil server -shutdown
sudo atsutil server -ping -
Help needed on setting fonts up
I've consulted my Linux books for this, I've read the Wiki, I've searched the forum and read dozens of different threads concerning this topic; I've searched the net and read tons of different stuff there as well; I've tried different configurations and to understand, what's really going on, but the only thing that helped a little bit in the end was adding the following in my xorg.conf (strange though, I never had to do this in Zenwalk and its not there in my xorg.conf either):
Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
Option "DPI" "96 x 96"
Fact is, my fonts still look like crap and the only thing I haven't tried yet is editing the /etc/fonts/local.conf and ~/.fonts.conf, simply due to the fact that both files don't exist on my Arch system. Do I have to set them up myself?
And if you have any further recommendations what can be done to make fonts look good, they are very welcome!
Thanks in advance.Thank you!
But I guess I have to accept the fact that, for whatever reason (which is beyond my understanding), fonts look different in Arch Linux.
I've installed the ttf-ms-fonts, ttf-dejavu and ttf-bitstream-vera fonts already. I've also installed artwiz-fonts, but Xfce doesn't find them, so there must've been gone something wrong already. I've also consulted the Wiki already and read different entries there concerning fonts. I've also checked the Gentoo Linux Wiki Howto Xorg & Fonts. I've ran fc-cache, mkfontscale and mkfontdir. The only thing I haven't done yet is creating a soft link like this:
ln -s /usr/share/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir yourfontdirectory/encodings.dir
Because I don't quite understand this soft link (my font directory is /usr/share/fonts ?).
Finally, I have created a /etc/fonts/local.conf file. But neither this nor everything else I've tried up to now has helped really. Only adding the DPI stuff to my xorg.conf has changed the fonts to a reasonably size. But that's about it.
I add some screenshots to demonstrate what I'm talking about.

I'm new to Arch and finally got XFree up and running. However, the fonts on KDE look terrible and out of proportion. Tried changing all my fonts in the configuration menus to Times, which I know to be fairly clean in Windows but I still get funny looking fonts that strain my eyes. Any help for a newbie on where to go with this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks. I also have a flat panel monitor.
JSkierI've had my share of troubles with fonts, but after lots of hard work, I realized that there are ways to solve problems. I'd like to say first off that I agree fully with the bytecode interpreter being enabled. I also agree that the msttcorefonts should be installed, along with the bitstream vera fonts.
However, most people get discouraged, because the Bitstream Vera fonts look awesome antialiased, and the corefonts look awesome not antialiased. But I have yet to see a GUI that lets you configure which font families are antialiased and which ones are not. So I played with fonts.conf a bit, and to my delight, I came up with something that works for me and should work for most.
Put this in your ~/.fonts.conf :
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<dir>~/.fonts</dir>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias" >
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font" >
<test compare="eq" name="family" qual="any" >
<string>Arial</string>
<string>Arial Black</string>
<string>Comic Sans MS</string>
<string>Courier New</string>
<string>Georgia</string>
<string>Tahoma</string>
<string>Times New Roman</string>
<string>Trebuchet MS</string>
<string>Verdana</string>
<string>Webdings</string>
</test>
<test compare="less" name="size" qual="any" >
<double>16</double>
</test>
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias" >
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
</match>
<match target="font" >
<test compare="eq" name="family" qual="any" >
<string>Arial</string>
<string>Arial Black</string>
<string>Comic Sans MS</string>
<string>Courier New</string>
<string>Georgia</string>
<string>Tahoma</string>
<string>Times New Roman</string>
<string>Trebuchet MS</string>
<string>Verdana</string>
<string>Webdings</string>
</test>
<test compare="less" name="pixelsize" qual="any" >
<double>18</double>
</test>
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias" >
<bool>false</bool>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Basically this sets all fonts antialiased, but excludes the Microsoft corefonts. I have left Impact antialiased because I feel it looks better that way. But that can be changed at your discretion.
I hope this helps someone! -
I've just downloaded packages from gnome and gnome-extra.I don't know how to explain but I thought default fonts of Gnome would look the same in every distro, but here are pretty different with respect to my previous slack installation, even if I always use Sans font. could it depend on xorg configuration?
you could also try dejavufonts. They are an extension of the bitstream-vera fonts
Also, read this: (I used to use LCD packages, now I use the ubuntu ones in AUR)
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fonts
when I first started using Arch, I didn't realize just how much info is in the WIKI. You can find the solutions (with nice how-tos) to a VERY large portion of ??s you may have when starting out.
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Main_Page
Use the search feature to find pages quickly -
About every month I try to switch to Arch, and every month I give up after spending hours and hours trying to get firefox to display fonts properly. The combinations of WM, LCD vs CRT, AUR, nVidia, font packages, results in a never ending battle to get my fonts to look right. Arch needs something like hwd for fonts. I end up randomly guessing at the magical combination that will make my fonts look like a screenshot from a pro's box. but it never happens. I end up going back to ubuntu which renders webpages perfectly after a fresh install. There are too many combinations of things.
I've been told this is too many fonts:
pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-dejavu artwiz-fonts ttf-liberation
I'm now trying ArchLinux inside VMWare on XP, so I don't have to keep reinstalling it everytime I screw up my fonts. Ultimately my 2nd box will run Arch natively, once I get the fonts straight.
If the fonts look weird under VMWare (which is possible), I go back to the native box and use Clonezilla to roll it back. I try so many things I forget what i've changed, thats why I like go back to a previous image.
I'm thinking of using the tiling WM "Awesome" to test the fonts with Firefox, so I don't have any WM stuff going on. I installed GNOME on my native box, and it made all the small fonts fuzzy. I could also try OpenBox, FluxBox, or IceWm, but I can never figure out which one I like. Tiling WM's solve my lack of art skills by eliminating all the eyecandy, lol.
From the responses, it looks like I should only install the bitstream-vera fonts or microsoft fonts, then tell Firefox to use them. I thought if I load a ton of fonts it would increase my chances of the webpages looking good, but I guess that is wrong thinking.
EDIT:
I got a major improvement on my native box by using an nVidia-specific tweak, by specifying the DPI in the xorg.conf to be 96x96. I still have issues, but at least it looks a lot better than it did. I'll post screenshots once I learn how to make them.

Diagnosing Arabic font rendering problem
I have an application that is localized into Arabic. On three machines I have access to to test on (Windows Vista, OS X, and Fedora 9), when the locale is set to Arabic, the UI is rendered correctly - menus, buttons, etc. all have their text rendered in Arabic and look fine.
The person that translated the text into Arabic, however, doesn't have the same results. He's running Linux (can't remember what flavor) and when he runs the application, the Arabic text all comes out as boxes. He says this is the case for any LookandFeel he tries (Metal that hideous GTK, Nimbus).
Since I can verify that the application does look okay on some machines, I feel comfortable in thinking that it's an issue on his specific machine. My question is - how can we diagnose what the problem actually is?
His machine's default locale is Arabic, and other (non-Java) applications render Arabic text fine.
He's using Sun Java 1.6 (not sure what minor release though), not GNU Java.
(Possibly?) relevant info:
I noticed that several UI keys such as "Menu.font" and "Button.font" are using a Deja Vu font on my Vista system when rendering Arabic. He says his system does have Deja Vu fonts installed, but when he's getting his boxes displayed, it seems these properties are set to some other Bitstream Vera font.Sorry, I haven't a clue regarding a possible solution, but I thought I'd share this:

I bet my credits the fault is within the Calibri font.
You can do a font substitution for Calibri. I made the change for all users. Before anyone does this they might check, from the command line, what font is being used for Calibri: 'fc-match Calibri'
In /etc/fonts/conf.avail/ I added the file, 39-no-calibri.conf:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<!-- Replace Calibri with generic fonts
bad ligatures in Calibri -->
<match target="pattern" name="family">
<test name="family" qual="any">
<string>Calibri</string>
</test>
<edit mode="assign" name="family">
<string>Arial</string>
<string>Liberation Sans</string>
<string>sans-serif</string>
</edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>
Then I symlinked to it from /etc/fonts/conf.d/:
# pwd
/etc/fonts/conf.d
# ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/39-no-calibri.conf
Finally, I updated the font cache with 'fc-cache -vf'. -
VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760
I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS! Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760. During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs. But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse! If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell. This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.

Hi all,
Been running OpenBox with pypanel for a while and everything has been running smooth, but then I updated and had to comment the rgb in xorg.conf. Now pypanel doesn't display any text or the clock, just the icons.
What can I do in order to get the text and clock back?I'm using the nvidia-96xx. Below's my complete .pypanelrc. Using the bitstream-vera font and it has work before the update of X.

[SOLVED] VIM not displaying many glyphs
I'm struggling to get the full glyph set to display in VIM. Particularly missed are the mathematical super- and sub-script. I've worked on the problem and tried various fixes for displaying UTF-8 characters without success.
(Code block bad form? Ok T. IMHO. There's that type of post where the OP doesn't know why something isn't working and they quote a dump truck of details, even though they're not sure what's relevant and what isn't. And the longer the quote, the harder it is to figure out what they're doing wrong. I didn't want to be that guy. I was hiding the verbosity, in the event my font problems are simpler than I've made it.)

Last edited by xtian (2014-07-27 14:43:23)Linux fonts are a muddle. Consoles can only display 256 characters, maybe 512. You simply cannot display many texts in a console. To navigate through the font mess in X, you need some familiarity with fontconfig. Xft uses fontconfig to select fonts. Fontconfig documentation is not user-friendly.
Droid is a family of fonts. My installation of the Droid family includes 27 different fonts. The command fc-list will list fonts matching a pattern. I usually filter the output by piping through grep. To list the Droid fonts, file name first followed by the fontconfig name, I use:
$ fc-list | grep Droid
Your fc-match results for Droid are from fontconfig doing its best to give you a readable display. Fontconfig cannot find a matching font for the name 'Droid', so it falls back to a "safe" font, 'Bitstream Vera Sans'.
XTerm or UXTerm or URxvt
I have my locale correctly configured, I think. I do not see any real advantage for uxterm over xterm. In my X resources, I include the lines,
xterm*termName: xterm-256color
XTerm*locale: true
For good glyph coverage with xterm, I have found 'DejaVu Sans Mono' to be among the better fonts. If I truly need utf8 coverage, I use urxvt. Urxvt allows one to use a ladder of fonts. If the character is not found in the first font listed, urxvt will search through the other listed fonts until it finds a glyph that can be displayed.
urxvt*font: xft:DejaVu Sans Mono:style=Book:antialias=false:size=8, \
xft:WenQuanYi Bitmap Song:size=8, \
xft:FreeSerif:style=Regular, \
xft:unifont:style=Medium:antialias=false
Here's a screenshot with three xterms using Droid, DejaVu Sans Mono, and Liberation Mono, plus one urxvt using the fonts in the code above. They all show the same portion of Markus Kuhn's utf8 test text.
