Bizarr screen artifacts! Anyone seen anything like it?

I,m getting really wierd screen artifacts when I have lots of windows and programs open. Red and blue boxes. The move around some. They cover the screen and are not window defined, ie the seem to be oblivious to windows. Seems to go away when I close some programs. They dont seem to be associated with particular program.

MacBook Pro 17" 2.33 GHz, 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Since resetting (as mentioned in my post above) today the battery has had a new lease of life...not sure why, but there u go. I have been able to use it without hooking up to a power source for about 3 hours so far
I don't even know how to put my PC into "sleep" mode, so that wasn't the cause of my problem.
thanks for your suggestions though.
For now, the problem is resolved....just like to know why resetting helps the ipod battery or its meter at least.

  • Serious battery query - anyone seen anything like it?

    Hey,
I own a 6gb ipod mini with serious battery problems (or so it would seem). It was a birthday present that I received in mid-August this year, which makes it only 4.25 months old.
A couple of days ago (Christmas Day, actually, lol) I was warned that the battery was very low after 1 hour of playback and so plugged it into the USB port on my PC to charge it.
I had never seen this message before, as I often listen to my ipod in the car, plugged into a Belkin FM transmitter that charges the ipod while it plays - thus, my battery had just about always been at full power when it was out of the car.
This rattled me a bit, but I dutifully charged the ipod for about 4 hours, after which the battery seemed happy again. However, tonight after listening for only 20 minutes, the ipod shut down, so I plugged it back into my computer and looked for possible causes/solutions to this problem.
Apparently, using backlight and the equaliser can drain power considerably, but in 20 minutes!? It is also recommended to use an AC charger rather than charging via USB, but they are expensive things to buy...
I've also reset the ipod and reloaded all my songs back on, but i doubt that this will help.
My problem seems to be a common one, but i've never seen it occuring so soon in the life of an ipod, and was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem?
It may have something to do with my Belkin car charger, who knows?
Luckily, I am still under warranty, and can hopefully get a new battery...

  • I am trying to generate a 50kHz sine wave for ten cycles, then aquire this waveform and store it in a file, I am using a PCI-Mio 16E-4 board, has anyone done anything like this?

I am trying to generate a 50kHz sine wave output on the DAQ card and then simultaneously recieve. I am using a PCI-Mio 16E-4 series board to do this. Has anyone done anything similar. I can generate a 50k wave no problem, and recieve one, but I can not get these vis to run together? Any suggestiosn

Jrod, yes you should be able to do this, actually there are quite a few example programs come with LabVIEW that handles simultaneous analog input and output, I check the specs of the board you use, the board should be able to handle the sampling/generation rate, but make sure for 50KHz sine wave, you would sample at least twice as fast, preferably ten times the generation rate, then this puts the sampling of the board to thew limit.
The program you can try is attached here, good luck with the application,

  • Apple TV 1 stops playing music, returns to a menu screen.  Usually occurs after several hours.  Reselecting music playlist and pushing start will get it playing again.  I have not seen anything like this in the forum.

Apple TV 1 is used exclusively for music playback.  The device is often in use 4 to 8 hours daily.  I have had no problems with it in over two years of use.  In the last few weeks it has started a new behaviour.
At random times but not always, it will simply stop playing the playlist and return to a menu screen.  Playing music again requires selecting a playlist and pressing play.  The device continues working and does not require restarting or resetting.
I have browsed the topics for Apple TV 1 and have not found anything similar to this problem.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • MacBook Pro having weird black noise on the screen.  Anyone seen this befor

So I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of ram. Recently the DVD drive has died on it but more importantly it has started having weird black things on the screen and it will freeze right up. It has been doing this more and more. It will do it when I have had it running for a long time and everything is hot, it will do it when It has just been sitting there in a screen saver doing nothing, and it will do it when I have just had it on for a few min right out of my bag. I am running Snow leopard on it. I have never seen a machine do this before in my 10 years of having Apple Laptops. Anyone have a similar experience? I have a little video of what it's doing on youtube.

  • Bizarre screen artifacts occurring

Strange issue I'm having with my 2007 Macbook. Running Snow Leopard 10.6.3. The screen begins to glitch out whenever the OS displays the shadows around window boxes and I get these bizarre artifacts.
I made a Picasa Gallery to show all the screenshots I took demonstrating the problem. What do you think? Please help this is a very strange thing that appears to happen almost randomly. Rebooting fixes it temporarily.
    http://picasaweb.google.com/nickux/MacScreenArtifacts?feat=directlink
So far I have reset the PRAM, reset the System Management, verified the disk (it checked out ok), I also made a Guest account and the problem occurred using that as well. I noticed that it tends to happen when I'm using Flash or watching youtube, things of that nature. Hasn't happened when viewing Quicktime videos, that I can recall anyways.
Monitoring internal temps with iStat reveals my CPU is hovering around 107 degrees F. Not sure if that's useful but my initial thought was that this could be the result of something, possibly my GPU, overheating. This problem occurred a long time ago- perhaps a year or so but went away. I noticed it has come back now that the weather is warm. Is it possible the heat of the room is doing this? The room is quite hot during the day somewhere between 80 degrees. Not an expert at all so these are just random theories.

I have the same problem and have the feeling that it might be related to X11. For me it seems to only occur when I run Matlab (using X11). Just letting X11 run in the background does not seem to be sufficient to make the glitches occur.
In addition I found a description of these artifacts as far back as 2006 (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=485680&tstart=105). So maybe it's not an isolated 10.6.3 problem.

  • Anyone seen damage like this before?

My son was on a school trip and was rooming with a few friends in a motel room. My son was sitting at the desk in the room, and one of his friends was sitting to his left on the end of the bed with his MacBook Air in his lap. The power cord was connected to the MagSafe connector on the left side of the laptop, and it was plugged in to an outlet by the desk where my son was sitting, with the cord stretched across the walk space between the bed and the desk. Someone knocked on the door and my son got up to answer it. My son's foot caught the power cord, which should have simply pulled the MagSafe connector loose. However, my son's friend is claiming that the cord somehow got caught in between the two halves of the laptop and caused the damage shown in the photo. This is even harder to fathom since my son was moving in the direction away from the small gap between the two halves of the laptop.
The laptop didn't get pulled from his friend's lap, hit the floor or anything else. He's just saying he heard a loud pop sound when the end of the cord pulled through the gap. Of course, the issue is his friend's dad wants my son to pay the $200 he was quoted for the repair. Is it plausible that the cord could do this kind of damage, especially considering it didn't fling a computer as light as an MacBook Air across the room?

It's definitely a fake MBair.  No apple dealer would touch it.  Compare with a real 1st generation machine.

  • Has any one ever seen anything like this?

This randomly pops up on my computer and freezes it, I erased my hard drive then restored, and it happened again.  I went to apple store and they kept it for two days and did the same thing, then said if it happens again its probably something in my library, and as soon as I got home it happened again so I'm obviously putting whatever it is back on, when I restore from time machine. Can anyone help???

I thought it had worked, I have been really busy with work so haven't been using my computer much. I thought it was good, but two days ago it started happening again. Could you please help me with instructions to do the things you recommended. I would be so grateful. Below is the error message detail.

  • My 4s lost sound on text alerts, music and keyboard clicks but still plays ringtones and alarm sounds.  Took to Genius Bar but they said never seen anything like it and to buy a new one.  Help please, need fix to get all sound back!

Lost partial sound, speakers work but keyboard, music, text alert does not except on headphones, please help!

If you've had it for less than a year, then it's still under warranty.  Take it to an Apple store or an authorized service facility.  See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434

  • Has anyone seen an app shimmering?

Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a screenshot, but I went to the app store to download xcode, and it said it was already installed. I opened the app launcher and scrolled through to find it. When I found it, it was shimmering. Like it had little stars all around and behind it blinking all over the place. For the life of me I can't reproduce it. Has anyone else ever seen anything like it? google comes up empty.

It's normal, apparently to get your attention when a new app has been downloaded:

  • Screen is "half out." Anyone seen this before, anything I can do?

    Hello,
I am a first time contributor to the Apple Support Communities. I have a 2006/2007 era MacBook pro that the screen is half out. I would like to get this fixed for my wife to use as her desktop, but I would like some guidance before I take it into a Genius Bar. Has anyone seen this before? Is it an easy (inexpensive) fix or is it not worth it (given the age of the machine). Any help would be beneficial. The machine runs awesome, I can use it, as long as i use the top 1/3rd of the screen.
    Thank You,

  • Please help! We got a used Mac Mini and we don't have the former owner's password, so we can't install anything like flash player.  Does anyone know how to get around this?

Please help! We got a used Mac Mini and we don't have the former owner's password, so we can't install anything like flash player.  Does anyone know how to get around this? I don't know how to wipe the hard drive, and the support online doesn't seem to work.

    As posted previously:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
If installing Leopard the process is similar in some respects.  If you wish to begin anew then after selecting the target disk click on the Options button and select the Erase and Install option then click on the OK button.  To install over an existing system do the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

I open iWeb but the main window doesn't open/appear on screen. The little windows like the inspector and font windows appear. Can anyone help?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

My colleague recently synched his phone and now has a full keyboard on the lock screen.  My lock screen keypad is set up like phone keys (alphanumeric).  He's wondering why his is different, and he also now cannot unlock it.  Anyone have this happen?  He came to me yesterday and I noticed that his iPhone 4 still had old software (version in the 4's), so I advised him that he needed to synch it up to get the iOS 5.1.1 version.  He synched and now can't get back in.  He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine.  Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.
