Bizarre behavior by Address Book

Two days ago, Address Book started opening Flash Player and loading a particular .swf file whenever I use the popup menu (with ctrl key) to "Send Email". This is on my Macbook Pro 2.33 ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 gb ram.
While not critical, it's a bit of a pain. Anyone have a suggestion?
Cheers.

Have you done a Get Info on that file to see if Address Book shows as the application for opening it; if not, check that and change it to whatever application you need to open that file. If that's not the problem, your Launch Services database may be corrupted and need to be rebuilt.
You can do that with an AppleScript or by downloading Onyx, selecting the Maintenance button and checking the box labeled LaunchServices. You should quit all other applications before running.

  • Address Book Merge results in *Crash*

My goal is to 1) eliminate all duplicates in my Address Book and 2) sync the fixed address book across all devices via iCloud.
In 10.7.2 I select "Look for duplicates" and the Address book finds like 8000 dupes.  I select MERGE. It starts to merge...but then Crashes.
    What should I do?

Peter, that is not a solution -- try selecting the same contact again from spotlight and you'll get the same "Import" dialog box, asking you what you want to do.
The expected behavior from Address Book is to open the existing contact.
No other application does this from Spotlight that I'm aware of, and after 7 years of OS X, this is still very, very annoying.
I wish there were a fix -- I'm activley looking and will report back.

  • Spotlight search for Address Book contact results in import query?

This bug is happening frequently lately, wheby I perform a Spotlight seach for a contact that is in my Address Book, and then when I select the contact in the search results, Address Book is selected and the app asks me "Are you sure you want to import 1 card?"
Anybody ever see this problem or how to resolve it?
    Thanks.

  • Address Book Changes Main Account Name . . .

    Hello,
Lately I have been noticing a very strange behavior in Address Book/iChat/Mail (they all reflect the problem once it happens).
I have my first name as "XYZ" (for example), and my last name is left blank. Then, out of nowhere, it fills in the first letter of my last name, and correctly too!
    Where is this coming from?
Could it be autofill from Safari? Or something in Mail?
This also then appears in my iChat handle (which is clearly linked to the Address Book, because when I go into the Address Book and delete this letter from the last name field it disappears from iChat instantly as well).
    Anybody?

I discovered that it is coming from Apple Mail. When you have your name in Apple Mail in the "Previous Recipients" it somehow gets grabbed and transfered from there. When you remove it from the "Previous Recipients" and then set your Address Book how you like your name to be, it sticks!

  • Address Book Not Working, Tried to Restore still Not Working

My address book isn't working. You can see what it does by clicking the link to the screenshot below. All menus are grayed out. and when i go into preferences It freeze's then I have to Force Quit. Thankfully I have Back up files of my address book. But even restoring them doesn't fix the problem. I'm thinking the actually Address Book program is messed up. What should I do???

    K Rock XP,
You may want to try the plist replacement one more time. Make sure that you use the restart option.
Replacing individual OS X applications is rarely productive in correcting application problems. Unless there is some reason to suspect that you have adversely affected the installation, for now you will be better off pursuing another course of action. Can you correlate the appearance/lack of function with any other event?
If you create another user account, can you duplicate the behavior of Address Book in that new account?
If Address Book functions in another account it indicates that it is not a system wide problem, and you may benefit from following the troubleshooting procedures listed in Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption, by Dr. Smoke. Once again, let us know what happens.
    ;~)

  • Why after so many updates does address book keep getting stuck?

Address book is easily the most troublesome app in OSX. My current frustration with it is that it keeps getting stuck in endless loops, requiring it to be killed and restarted, and most likely introducing more errors in the database that make for more troubles, and so on ad nauseum. Really, Apple; couldn't you make an address book that "just works" by now? Maybe it should have been kept simpler?

I'm pretty skeptical of attributing this to anything peculiar to my current environment. I've observed continuous bad behavior by Address Book as long as there has been Mac OSX in the early 00's, often involving its interactions with Mail and Calendar. For the longest time, it couldn't undo, which made for some nasty mistakes.
But here's my report. I see a few red items that appear to reflect outdated things that haven't been removed or the continuous OSX complaining about Flash player versions. Let me know if you see something problematic...

  • Address Book quirky search behavior in Snow Leopard vs. reg. Leopard?

Address Book in 10.5.8 Leopard always allowed quick location of an entry by typing the first few characters of the last name. Gets me the precise name or close to it. AB in Snow L. doesn't do the same. In SL when typing same first 3-4 characters, AB finds a matching first name. Not what I want! Did Apple change that feature, or do I have a problem? I have several machines, some w. 10.5.8, a new one with 10.6.3. Addition of new Snow Leopard also messes up MobileMe sync of Contacts between the different computers (always resetting data on the MBP 10.6.3) The courtesy of your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
I'm having exactly the same problem.
The search now works on the last name only if it is displayed before the first name, which was not the behavior before Snow Leopard.
Thank you for your help ...

  • New unwanted behavior - Mail.app causes Address Book.app to open

    Hi all,
For a long time now I've had an email rule that formats email items a special way if the email is from a person in a certain address book group. It has worked great.
Lately, (sorry, but I don't know specifically when this started -- it has been at least a few weeks) when I get an email from someone in that special group, Address Book starts up. This did not used to happen, and I don't want it to happen as it is useless and distracting.
Does anyone know what might have changed in recent updates to cause this behavior change? Alternatively, and better, does anyone have any ideas on how to make it stop without abandoning my formating rule?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Hi Kirk.
Do your rules involve the use of AppleScript, or any Mail plug-ins, or something like that?

  • Weird Address Book Sync Behavior

I want to sync my contacts in Apple Address Book to my iPod. I have all contacts selected in iTunes. After syning, when I go to my personal contact on the iPod, all I see is an email address. Curious thing though, it's not an address in my Address Book. Also, I have several family members in my Address Book, all with the same last name and my weird contact with an email address which is not in my Address Book is the only family member which is transfered. I deleted all my contacts on the iPod ( 30gig) and resynced with the same result. Is there a latent backup file the iPod is accessing? Where is it getting my contact with an email that's not in my Address book? It's not transfering phone numbers, correct email address or spouse information or work numbers? Just an old email address. Weird.

  • Weird Address Book enrty Find behavior

Yet another oddity I just noticed with the Finder version of Spotlight:
I type the first name of my sister into the main Finder window Spotlight search field. The results show, among others, her entry in Address Book. In the default group view of the results, this initially shows up listed by her full name. However, if I do any of the following, it changes to the metadata cache name, the one with a long string of hex numbers & the "/ABPerson.abcdp" suffix:
    •Scroll the window
•Change from group to icon or list view
    •Select her name
•Switch to any application or any other Finder window
Even odder, if I click the "Repeat Search" curved arrow button, the results revert to the full name listing ... usually.
    Anybody see anything like this?

    anyone?

  • Strange address book behavior

I'm trying to create an address book group using the method described in http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=153676.
I was able to do this about a week or 10 days ago, but now when I try, AB will not take the dragged addresses from Mail. No little plus sign, and the address bubbles simply snap away and back over to Mail.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the issue? I'm on a Unibody Macbook, with 10.6.1.

ok, good point, thanks. but as the OP says, in leopard you could simply drag a bunch of addresses from the "to" field and drop them onto address book. i don't understand why this feature was removed. I suspect this was not intended and is a bug.

  • Bad Address book behavior

    Hi all,
Yet another problem with address book in Lion.
The latest issue is that I am no able to get Address book out of Edit mode when I edit or create a new card.
The "Done" button is completely missing and the "Save" pull-down menu option is greyed out.
This used to work properly, but no more.
    Any thoughts?

    Hola Hacky...
Yupper, just tried trashing everything having to do with Address book in the ~library/preferences folder.  No change.
I also notice that I can't add anything in the notes of the existing cards.  Something is definitely not happy in AB.
    Thanks anyway,
    Matt

  • Address Book - Department Field Behavior

I have an Exchange account hosted by Rackspace. I can add a contact within Outlook or Outlook web access, and I generally include the department field.
However, when I check the contact within address book, the department field does not display. I can click edit - department is in the template - but still no data display.
Funny thing is, I can enter the department field within address book, and it does display in Outlook/OWA.
It seems to be a data retrieval/display issue, as the field obviously maps the same.
    Any ideas?

I don't have any ideas, Jack, but I do have the same problem. It's something that just popped up—one of those things that seemed to work one day and not the next. The data is there, it's just not populating the field in Address Book. Strange... and annoying.

  • Bizarre address book problem

About 80% of my address book entries have lost their phone numbers. Names remain, but no numbers.
Unfortunately, I didn't know about this problem until the machine went through a full cycle of of online and offline backups, so all three of my address book backups along with .Mac all have the same catastrophic problem!
I have used Macs since 1984 and am quite knowledgeable about backup, software, etc. I cannot begin to understand what might have happened.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Try something to see if they are really lost or just temporarily(?) invisible:
    1. Launch Address Book, and export one of the entries, that is missing its phone numbers, to a .vcf card
    2. Launch Terminal.app
    3. In Teminal.app, type cat, but don't hit the return (⏎) key just yet.
    4. Type a spacebar character after "cat", and still don't hit the return (⏎) key just yet.
    5. Drag the newly created .vcf card into Terminal's window; now type ⏎
    6. Are the phone numbers still in there? Hopefully, they are.
    7. Back in Address Book, go to Peferences (⌘,)
    8. You should see several icons across the top of the preferences window: General, Template, vCard, Phone, LDAP, and Sharing. If you don't see these icons, click on the oval-shaped (capsule-shaped) button in upper-right-hand corner of the preferences window -- that should make them become visible if they are not.
    9. Click on the Template icon. If "phone" not shown there, goto the pulldown menu and see if it is a selected field (if purportedly an active field, it will be grayed out in this menu)

  • Some of the entries in my address book show birthdays one day/year earlier in Ical. I cannot change this except by putting in the birthdays a day/year earlier than they are. Why is this happening only for some entiries and not others?

Some of the birthdays I have entered in Address book appear in my Ical one day and one year earlier than the date I have given. Eg. I have entered a birthday in Address book as 23 March 2011 and it appears in Ical as being on 22 March 2010. Other names have no problems. There are only some that do not appear with the correct date and year. Why is this?  Has anyone found how to correct this strange problem?  I have Time Zones ticked.
    Bronze2011

I'm having this exact same problem, but it's doing it with a bunch of birthdays. I also did 0001 when I didn't know the birth year, so I went back and did a more current year, but they still aren't showing up where they should be...or at all. It's completely bizarre.
