Bizarre date and time hang.. Hardware or software?

Hi all, i have this totally bizarre problem that i have never seen in my 25 years of using mac's..
Since yesterday my date and time seems to hang; it doesn't really update anymore and when i hover my mouse over i get the beach ball. Also this seems to effect the system prefs, if i start that up it sometimes hangs too.. which then effects and hangs the finder.
Last night i deleted the associated plist and cages things, zapped the pram etc, no luck with this. Also disk utility showed no problems with my drive.
So today i installed a fresh new 10.6 system which did install, but the first 2 attempts getting across the welcome&register screens gave me beachballs and complete unresponsiveness too. So now after some hard restarts i'm puzzled.. Also startup and shutdown seems slow.
As far as i can tell there is no special clock battery in these things that could cause this? So anyone any ideas? Every idea is much appreciated!
Thanks, Gerben

Welcome to Apple Discussions Gerben.
Your computer is apparently early 2008. Do you have the extended Applecare warranty? If you do you could take it to the nearest Apple-authorised service centre & get it checked out.
If not, try starting in safe mode by holding the shift key until the Apple logo appears. See whether the problem is still there. If not, it's a software problem almost certainly.
However you should also disconnect all peripherals and see whether there is still a problem. If not, then it is likely one of the peripherals is the source of the problem.
Failing this insert your original installation dvd, disconnect all peripherals and restart holding the D key. This will check hardware. If any errors are reported you might need to approach service.

  • Loses date and time after restart

It seems as if my MacBook has gotten a bit more sluggish and so I rebooted it. After the reboot the date/time went back to the year 2000. This is not normal. I am not sure if I have a hardware issue or a software issue. I have 2GB's of RAM which is not great, but should be enough for SL. The Mac gets sluggish when more apps are open which is expected with only 2GB's of RAM. But I just wonder if I am having a motherboard issue like I did the last time I had these slowness symptoms on my then Ibook G4.

Mine just did the same thing. I did a complete shutdown and when I restarted, I had the wrong date and time plus the system had lost my WIFI network password.

  • MyRio Cannot Communicate When the Getting Started Wizard Tries to Set Date and Time

I cannot seem to get MyRio to communicate with my computer. I have installed all the items on both discs and applied any updates that it asked me to do. I plug in the MyRio, the device window pops up and I click the Getting Started Wizard. The myRio is found by the computer and I click on it. It says checking software, then asks me to rename it. I do so and then it attempts to set the date and time. At this point it says it cannot communicate with the myRio and to check that the power supply and USB are plugged in, which are obviously connected since the computer was able to find the myRio in the first place.
NI MAX can see the myRio, says that it is in "Safe Mode (Software not installed)."
There may be a problem with conflicting LabViews, since I had 2012 originally before installing the 2014 packages. Does anyone know if the myRio discs are installing the full LabView 2014, or just packages for LabView 2014 that will not work without first installing the full LabView 2014? Or is there a quick fix for this?
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Mag Safe power cord sparks when connected or disconnected--whereupon the MacBook Pro 13'' dumps date and time, and all passwords, plus any/all unsaved information.

I purchased my MacBook Pro 13" from the Apple Store in Tucson, AZ, in mid-January. Since then, every time the Mag-Safe cord is jostled, not even disconnected, sparks fly from the power terminal on the computer, the computer shuts down, and dumps its passwords, as well as the date and time.
Any work in progress is also lost.
I work overseas, and Apple's advice was to give them my credit card number, await shipment of a new power supply and cord, and then, when I return the old power supply and cord, i'd receive a credit. That won't work, as packages from the US to my location take weeks if they arrive at all. There is no Apple Store within a reasonable distance. Or, Apple suggests, when I'm home on leave in mid-June, I should bring the computer to the Apple Store for repair--I have only days in which to do that, but I suppose I'll need to try. My concern is that I'll need to return overseas without my computer and won't be able to retrieve it for months, until my next leave.
This issue shows up elsewhere online. Is there a short in the power terminal in the computer, or on the Mag-Safe power cord, or within the computer itself? It's a known issue, thus I wonder why it hasn't been fixed.

  • How to eliminate date and time in image logging in vision express

I am using vision express to capture a set number of images with inline processing. I am opting to log the images to a specified folder. However, the file names of the images have the date and time appended by default. Is there a way to eliminate the date and time in the images' file name? Please help.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi
It may help if you paste your code and file to better understand what is it that you want to remove from the file. If you have the vision development module, you can certainly use the File VIs available within the vision tools utilities palette in LabVIEW to manipulate the way you save your files.
     http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371007a.pdf (Page14)
There is a good example code you can refer to within the following forum link:
    http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Labview-IMAQ-VI-for-capturing-images-and-saving-with-incremental/td-...
Also if you have access to the Vision Builder for Automated Inspection software, this application offers you that option:

  • Date and time in menu bar

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a very silly problem that is driving me crazy. I found similar problems on this forum but not exactly the answer to them.
The "Show date and time in menu bar" checkbox System Preferences will not remain checked. I have checked it 50 times but every time I close it and go back it's unchecked.
Based on some suggestions on the forum I check the SystemUIServer in Activity Monitor and it's hanging (i.e. Not Responding). I tried force quitting and restarting but it doesn't get it going. Somehow I think these two problems are related.
I also tried deleting the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file under ~/Library/Preferences and logging out and back in to go back to system defaults on the menu bar but that didn't work either.
Alot of people solved similar problems by installing OS X 10.5.2 but I'm already running 10.5.2! I'm running out of ideas here.
    Any help is appreciated.

Excuse me, my interface is in Dutch and I literally translated the name.
Desktop and Screen saver I believe, select the menu for the screen saver.
There is a box you can tick, it will display the time when the screen saver is running.
It could be displayed like 3553 instead of the correct time.
If that is the case check in another user account, or make a new user account in Apple menu>System preferences>Accounts. Does the problem occur in the new account as well?

I need to create a validation which fires on save, to ensure the user is inputting a date and timeYou could start with a regular expression to ensure that the format of the string is correct.
You could subsequently then try using a "PL/SQL function return boolean" along the lines of the following:
       declare
          dt_dummy date;
       begin
          dt_dummy := to_date(:P4_START,'DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI');
          return true;
       exception
       when others then
          return false;
end;Note the intentional use of the 'when others' clause here - this is one of the few places where I think it might legitimately be used because we know that, whatever the problem, that date format isn't right (although might consider testing for specific exceptions like -01858 to differentiate between that and something more sinister).
edit: Hang on a minute... what am I thinking? Why not just use a date picker?

  • Can I pick a certain date and time to restore my iphone?

In trying to update my iphone software with this latest update, our internet connectivity was screwy.  When it went to sync, my iphone went black and everything on the computer screen quit.  I couldn't do a thing with my iphone, it wouldn't even turn on/off so I restored.  When it restored, it did not sync with the 10:30 pm time that I synced before I started the update.  Instead, it synced with the 12:55 am time when the internet gave out.  Which means, that I have nothing on my phone... all is lost.  So I tried another restore which tried to sync it with 1:something am. OR I had the option of choosing June 2011.  Is there anyway possible that I can choose a certain date and time to restore so not all is lost?

No, you can only restore form backup using the list of dates/times it gives you.

  • How do you date and time stamp pictures and videos using a EOS Rebel T3?

I am needing to utilize date and time stamping on videos and photos in my work.  The pictures and videos must display time, a date, and reference number.  I have gone through the cd, owner's manuel and software manuel and I am unclear if I can perform this function.

While this is a relatively common feature on point & shoot cameras -- where the photo is thought of as a snapshot to document a memory in a person's life, among DSLR cameras it's not very common (I don't actually know of a DSLR that does this though I don't doubt that it may exist).  DSLR users are usually expecting a higher quality image -- so now the image is thought of more like art and less like a snapshot and the date/time in the corner distracts from the image.  Also they tend to be more advanced users who would be able to modify the image themselves so they have little need for such a feature.
The camera does record the date & time... but it's in the EXIF data (information recorded into the image file but not displayed).
SO... there are programs that will just do this.  You'll need to do a search (I found several but have never tried one so I can't vouch for them).  I think there are Photoshop plug-ins that do this (assuming you have Photoshop). These programs allow you to define the info you want printed (including EXIF data such as date/time) and you get to pick the location, font, size, color, etc. and ultimately the location on the image where you'd like the info displayed.  They then add the info visibly onto the image for you and most support "batch" use (e.g. drop a whole folder of images on it and they'll do them all.)

  • "RT Set date and time" does not set seconds in UTC mode

    Hallo,
I tried to set the time on my cRio 9012 with the function settimeUTC which is used by the "Set Date and Time" vi. But the seconds I enter are ADDED to the current time and not set as new value.
Even the vi shows this behaviour: I set up a vi in which the time is set in a loop (100ms delay) and read again. When I set local time the clock stops (as expected) but when I set the UTC time the seconds keep on running...
Can anybody help me with that problem???
    Thanks
    Florian
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Andreas,
well it does not matter if I set a time zone in the MAX or not. In my example I was working on UTC + 0 but even when I set it to my local time (UTC + 1) I get the same behaviour modified by one hour.
My LabView Version is 8.5. In in the MAX under Software-> LabView-RealTime it says that I am using 8.5.0.
I suspect  that the settime.out which is installed on the cRio is probably the root of the problem as VxWorks itself does not offer a function (at least I did not find one) to convert from broken down system time to system time in seconds. There only exist one to convert from broken down local time to system time in seconds ( mktime() ). The reverse function is available for both cases: gmtime() and localtime(). I also did not find a way to find out the offset of the local time. So I have to use the library function settimeUTC() from settime.out.
As I offered I can send you the settime.out file from my cRio for reference or maybe you can tell me how to find out what the version of the file is. It seems not to be an ELF file as I looked inside it to find some timestamp or version info...
    Thanks so far

  • TS4268 I changed set date and time automatically to "no" and I was able to activate iMessage. This seems contrary to all the troubleshooting discussions I've been reading.

Is there any definitive info on this subject?

When ATV is setting date and time, and hangs there, it usually indicate there isn't a network connection.  Is your router still working, is the Internet for all the other computers on the same network working?  Have you tried changing from WiFi connection to Ethernet or vice versa?

  • Set date and time

I recently updated the apple tv .It was fine after the update although i did not use it as i was on my way out after the update.Days later when i put in on it cant seem to open itunes.reason being network time cannot be updated.i tried sighning out and now i cant sighn in.I tried reset that just brings me to a halt on screen that says activating setting date and time.Does any one know whats going on.Is the time server down ? Or something .Itune store sighn in works well in my pc ,ipad and other devices no problem.
And i tried putting off all firewalls in router but no luck.

    Any idea guys

    HI
I have tried everything possible such as router firewall settings changing DNS servers using WIFI and ETHERNET nothing works.Waited for more updates nothing so far.The only solution is to down grade the firmware through itunes .Using now 5.0.2 works like a charm .Don't wait any longer just search apple forum for procedure and follow.Use a mac better. It takes only 5 minutes for the process. All you need is a mac or windows pc,usb cable, the type that goes behind the apple tv,(I used a blackberry bold 9900 original cable),software known as ipsw.YOU DONT NEED TO POWER THE APPLE TV WHILE DOING THIS.IT WILL LIGHT THE LED FROM PC POWER.GO TO https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4419016?start=0&tstart=0  Read procedure written by cwlown .JUST MAKE SURE FOR MAC HOLD OPTION KEY DOWN THEN CLICK RESTORE .POINT TO THE DOWNLODED ipsw AND RUN.FOR WINDOWS HOLD SHIFT THEN CLICK RESTORE .POINT TO Ipsw download and run. There is no neen to unzip or extract ipsw.I had a problem when using windows xp ipsw did not show up as an upgradeable firmware therefore could not run it.I did not want to waste time and used the mac instead.I think renaming the ipsw in windows could have cleared the problem.Another thing is after the downgrade itunes will say that your APPLE TV is restored to its factory defaults don't worry the job is done ,check your software on the APPLE TV THROUGH your tv LOCATED at general then about.SETTING up the ATV first connect the wifi or lan cable select location first THEN sign in.
