Bizarre garbled graphics in Safari and Finder on i7 glossy hi-res machine

*here's one in safari:*
*and here's one in my finder:*
*is this likely a software issue or a hardware issue?*

OMG! My six-month-old Macbook Pro has been doing the same thing since I bought it. I thought it was just an odd Safari bug, and unfortunately only had two weeks with it in the US before leaving for a country that does not have any Mac repair facilities. It was only then that I realized it had the capability to "migrate" out of Safari to affect the desktop. At this point it requires a restart to be able to make out anything on the screen. If I quit and restart Safari while it is still only "in" Safari that will generally arrest it. It is slightly more likely to occur if a Safari window is open when the computer goes to sleep, especially with a lot of tabs. I haven't seen it arise from any other program, but I don't really have anything more exotic than MS Office installed.
I did a search here when it first happened but didn't find anything. I'm so glad you posted this. I couldn't figure out how I was going to explain it to an Apple repair person without them thinking I'm nuts, because it's not consistently reproducible. I tried taking a screenshot but it ends up only the a shot full of pixellated squares. Now I can show them this thread...

  • Graphical Glitches- Safari and movies and beyond

I visited the Apple homepage today and watched the Quicktime ad for the MacBook Air. As it ended and the movie transitioned with the gradient field behind it, where multiple views of the Air could be chosen, there were black blocks that would flicker in and out during the transition. The same blotchy graphics occurred when switching between the different views of the Air. These glitches occurred when any image was opened in it's own browser window/tab as well. I also noticed on different websites and particularly long listed sites, like the support forums, that text would become "displaced," like pieces of graphics were copied over, duplicated and slightly off from where they should align with other text. I thought it was just a Safari issue but the glitchy text was also occurring in Mail and even the Finder. I had to restart to get it to stop duplicating and shifting text. I haven't had the black blocks occur again. Thought maybe it was a Flash issue but got more concerned when I began affecting apps beyond Safari. A graphics card issue, perhaps?
I hadn't noticed any of this before the Leopard Graphics Update a few days ago and it doesn't happen at all on my other Macs, just the Santa Rosa MacBook Pro (my other, older MacBook Pro has no issues with it). I was having that black screen after sleep issue that's been mentioned and think I've got that squared away only to find this issue.

Other topics about this very thing have stated that the problem only occurred when the MacBook Pro was running on battery power. I don't remember that being the case for me. It was after the graphics update so I'm wondering if that was the cause. It was said this issue was even seen on machines running Windows via BootCamp. But this only effects my newest MBP, not the older Core2Duo model. Some have said that the recent release of the Safari update cleared things up for them. I haven't installed it yet and still wonder why one Mac out of six I use only have suffered the issue.
I'm updating now to actually admit that after posting this topic that I've yet to have another problem with it, Safari, Mail, Finder or anywhere else.

  • Garbled Graphics every once and a while on FF 4.0

I have been using FF 4.0 for a few days now. Every once and a while while browsing, all of a sudden the graphics will freeze up and then all of the menus on FF are garble graphics (see screenshot link below). This only seems to happen when Pandora radio is open. It takes a browser exit and reopen to clear the issue. However the garbling appears to continue in right-click context menus in windows explorer. It did not happen under the same circumstances with FF 3.6.

I also notice that the context menu garbling happens to Acrobat as well, even after acrobat is closed. It takes a computer restart to get rid of it altogether.
Also, the screenshot link above is incorrect, it is:

  • CRAZY FONTS!  Garbled garbage in Safari and help files.  How do I fix it?

I wish I could post a screen shot.
Some pages in my browser, particularly in Wikipedia, display the bulk of the content in numerals that look like fractions--0 over 02 8996 to the 4th--with an occasional hyperlink (bold, blue, and/or underlined) appearing in regular Latin characters. If I copy the nonsense and paste it into anothe app like excel, it displays in Latin characters and I can read it. And that has been my workaround. But I'm getting tired of it. WHY does Safari (and today, a help system, which wasn't ANY help at all) display these fractional numbers instead of alphabetic letters? And how can I stop it? It doesn't appear linked to the font I choose to display in.

The problem is due to an underlying bug in the WebKit.framework, which is the framework Safari, Mail, and other applications use to display HTML content. The bug causes the glyphs from Fraction style fonts to be displayed in place of the plain-style glyphs, even when the web page specifies the plain style should be used.

  • Mac Safari and Finder not Working

    Hello,
I use MAC Book Pro Retina, OSX 10.9.5.
I was facing the add problem in safari. If I used to click anything a new tab used to open with the add. I used add block plug in but it didnt work. Then I thought of unsinstalling safari. So I went to application and deleted all the system files linked with safari. But as a consequence, my finder also stopped working, now I am not able to access any data in my Mac. When I restart my computer, as soon as the desktop loads, the cursor goes in wait, and it remains on wait forever. All the desktop files are not visible. Only browser ( chrome) and apps are working fine. I don't know how to resolve this issue. I want to get my safari back and also want my Finder to work fine. Please try to help me.

  • Garbled graphics

Has anyone had graphic glitches with their iPad 2?
I was play GT Racing this morning with my son. The game kept crashing on my iPad 2 with odd garbled graphics - strange colors and random triangular shapes. Much like when a logic board goes bad on a Mac.
It only happened in the GT game so I wonder if is a game glitch or a bad graphic chip. Is there a way to test this?
    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Unfortunately, uninstalling and closing other apps didn't work.
I did check the GT Racing app in the app store and it appears others have the same problem. Probably safe to assume it is a game glitch instead of a hardware problem since it doesn't have the problem with any other app.
    Thanks again for the suggestion.

  • Some PDF files garbled in Safari and PDF HD

I have a 3 page sample of a book on my website (generated from InDesign) that reads fine on the Mac Safari and other programs on the Mac.
However, the PDF will only show garbled, overlying text when viewed on the iPad Safari and PDF HD. It is not file size related as I have an 8-page newsletter nearly four times the size of file and also created in InDesign --> PDF that views just fine.
I have exported the PDF and also print to PDF as a new file and it still comes out a mess.
The graphics and music illustrations are ok, some lines of text, and titles. The fonts used are Times TT and Helvetica. There is also a IPA linguistic font used. Basically all other text in the three pages is just garbage.
Anyone else see this happening and how can I fix the situation so clients can see the sample on iPad? Can the imbedded EPS files in the document be what is fouling things up? The illustrations are essential for the sample from the book.

I have this same problem in all PDF readers and Safari.
The problem exacerbates itself when a PDF document gets zoomed in or out.
I have some large, multi-page PDFs that are fine and some that aren't.
I even have one or two page PDFs that exhibit the same issues.
I can't see any pattern to whether a PDF will view correctly or not.
I have reported this via Apple iPad feedback.
You may want to do the same to let Apple know tis is an issue on some iPads or iOS software.
    Here's the feedback link

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Safari and firefox 'cannot find the server' for every other page that i navigate to, unless I turn Wifi off and on. How do I fix this?

Safari and firefox 'cannot find the server' for every other page that i navigate to, unless I turn Wifi off and on. Once i reconnect to the network, the page loads, but after loading a few more pages, the same thing happens all over again.
This happens each and every time, on different Wifi networks, in different locations.  On the other hand, I don't ever encounter this problem when I tether my laptop to my mobile phone's 3g/2g network using Personal Hotspot. How do I fix this?

    Try this DNS server ...
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch both your browsers to test.

I would like to add to the Safari toolbar on my ipad 5 IOS 6  machine. I have searched the web and find some instructions to do this but the words and pictures do not match what I can see. I am beginning to think this is not a capabilty of the ipad 5 but perhaps for a Mac computer running Safari. Does anyone know if it is possible to add tools to the toolbar on the latest version of iPad OS & Safari Browser? If so please tell me how. Thanks

You cannot customize the Safari toolbar on the iPad.
What you can do on the iPad is go to Settings>Safari>Always show Bookmarks Bar>On and that will add a bookmarks bar on to the Safari browser.

  • Strange graphics issue when looking at JPGs in Safari and Preview.

I am having an issue in Safari and Preview under OS X 10.4.11. I have the exact same issue in both Safari 3 and 4(beta). The blacks on JPG images aren't black they are a dark brownish grey, all other colours show up properly. If I open the same website in Flock everything looks fine. If I download the image and open it up in Photoshop the image also looks fine. To make it even stranger if I open the image up in photoshop and re-save it as a tif file and open the tif file in Safari or Preview it looks normal. It just how it's handling JPGs!
See the following link for an image showing the issue... note the dark brownish grey colour around the watch:
    http://c77ilw.blu.livefilestore.com/y1p66KB-yBArvIBleY3s1wGZ8EgAyxRd8VLnJ9XA9zJz gPUgIBbvM5aSqPz59g1nC5TehmACKYCw/Picture%201.png
Now look at what it's supposed to look like:

Any ideas? I've tried googling everything I can think of about this issue and haven't found anyone with the same or similar situation.

I believe it to be an issue with how Safari and Preview are displaying colours under OS X, the strange thing is about 4 weeks ago I had not problems with Safari displaying these types of images and can't think of any settings I changed around that time. Safari under Windows does not show this issue and it is not showing the issue on a different Mac running Safari under OS X 10.4.11 either, so it has to be a setting somewhere that inadvertently was changed I think.
Again it is only showing on black and near black colours no other part of the image is affected.
Below is a link I made in photoshop comparing a screen grab of the issue (top half) vs a downloaded copy (bottom half) of the image with raised curves to accentuate the difference for those who may have darker gamma settings and are having trouble seeing the problem.

  • Safari cannot find the server and question mark in blue square

    Hi
I consistently have problems with safari displaying the message safari cannot find the server. The version I have is 5.1.8 and I installed a security update today (23.3.13) hoping it would solve the problem. After refreshing the page a couple of times or restarting safari everything works as normal but this is an ongoing issue. I also have problems with images loading on sites. They appear as blue squares with question marks. I have tried most things people have said on the net but nothing is working.
    Please help!
    Thanks
