Bizarre iTunes Genre Duplication - Children's Music
In iTunes, I have two genre listings for Children's Music: Children's Music and Children’s Music. As you can see it looks like a slight variation in the way the apostrophe is rendered. I have tried changing the name of all of my music labeled Children's Music to another name (like Childrens Music with no apostrophe) to see if it go rid of the excessive genre listing, but they were both still present. Does the default iTunes genre list contain both the variations of Children's Music? Does anyone have a way to change this obnoxious bug?
Yes, the difference in apostrophes does make a difference. Pick the one you like, copy it, then paste into all the other ones. This ensures, they will be identical.
Just a FYI, these kind of duplicate listings are often the result of empty spaces within, or at the end of the names. The only way to spot them is to highlight (select) the name and look for extra spaces being highlighted. It is also possible that invisible/non-printing characters got embedded. These are even more difficult to spot, but that's why copy and pasting Meeks them all identical.

ITunes set to Sync no music, yet there's music on my iPhone
I've been battling this for awhile and got desperate, and yet - iTunes sync does not seem to work as I think it should.
In iTunes I select my phone, and set the Music options to:
"Sync Music" - checked
"Selected playlists, artists, etc." - checked
"Playlists" "Artists" "Albums" and "Genres" all have NO check marks.
On the iPhone 4S:
Settings / Music / Show All Music - NOT Green (message is "Only music that has been downloaded to this device will be shown.").
Sync
I still have hundreds of songs on my phone.
If nothing is checked in iTunes to Sync, and I click Sync, why doesn't it Sync - as in, why doesn't it delete all the music off my phone?
Now, the real problem was that there was one Playlist that wouldn't Sync, or download to my phone.
During the Sync process it kept coming back saying I needed 1.4Gb of additional free space. (That didn't make sense since all the songs in that Playlist were already on the phone, but no matter).
So I deleted a bunch of Apps. and that didn't free up enough space, or so the message said.
So I tried, via the steps above, to delete all my music, and yet it's still there.
And no, my Playlist, if checked, does not Sync.
One other trivia tidbit - if I check just one song in iTunes, the color bars at the bottom show almost zero blue, for "Audio." Then if I uncheck it, it shows over 7Gb of Audio. That seems backwards and nonsensical.
So, in order, my "needs" (request for help):
* How do I get a playlist to show up on my iPhone?
* Why does Syncing. with the options above, which should delete all music from the phone, leave all music on the phone?
* Why would checking one song in iTunes show that a little space would be used by Audio, but unchecking it (leaving all boxes unchecked) show over 7Gb of Audio would be there? (See question above - there's nothing checked, so it should be zero, right?)Music can end up on your iPhone in different ways, not just by auto-syncing. For example ...
iTunes purchases made directly from the device. These can remain on the iPhone even after you sync to your library (which should copy them from your iPhone to your library). Purchases made from the iPhone can remain in either of two ways I've seen -- a "Purchased" playlist that automatically gets created and the songs remain on the device until you delete the playlist and its contents (either right from the iPhone, or via iTunes). But sometimes there's no such playlist and these purchases remain in a "Manually added" state. If you look in iTunes where you set your Music sync settings, scroll to the bottom of that window and look for a "Manually added items" category. It will only be there if such items exist on your device. If you see this, select all items in this category and delete them, then initiate a sync.
As a variation of the above, if you ever did have "Show all music" turned ON and tapped a cloud, those items will be downloaded and can act like new purchases as described above, where they may end up in the "Manually added items" category. If you don't see them in this category, just for kicks turn "Show all music" ON and download one song from the cloud -- you may then see that song, and perhaps several others in your "Manually added items" category.
Another possibility -- even if you auto-sync you can still manually drag and drop music from your library to your iPhone. Such items end up in the "Manually added items" category described above. If you see these, select and delete them, then initiate a sync.
As a final suggestion, you may have to do what I did -- temporarily change your iPhone to "Manually manage music and video", then Apply the change. Then navigate to your iPhone's contents while connected to iTunes. If you see music on the iPhone, select all songs and then delete. But, you're not done -- to really make this stick, perform a backup to iTunes while your iPhone is still in Manual mode and empty of all songs. Then Restore the iPhone, load your backup back in place, which should then put your apps back on -- and no music. Now change back to auto sync, select your Music sync choices, then start auto-syncing. Hopefully that nukes the rogue songs for you ... it did for me when I first installed iOS 7, and then again after doing an iOS update. -

I've created a few custom thumbnails for my iTunes Genre view.
In the Movie section, I have a two genres - Music and Musicals - each with separate Genre Thumbnails
But iTunes will not let me use both thumbnails.
It keeps "reading" Musicals as just Music, and just uses the Music thumbnail.
Any ideas how to correct this?

I figured out how to get iTunes to distinguish between similar genre names.
I added " <key>exactStringMatch</key><true/> " to each Music related genre in Video in the genre plist.
This allows iTunes to uses all three different Thumbnail artworks for Music in TV, Music in Movies and Musicals in Movies.
However, it does not help with allowing iTunes to use two different thumbnails for IRISH HISTORY and IRISH MUSIC.

how do i save my itunes genres each on a seperate external drives? or maybe it isnt possible and i will have to use 1 huge drive?
The iTunes folder that keeps re-appearing is due to the fact that iTunes requires an "iTunes" folder to exist in its default location, which is still your ~/Music folder. That newly-spawned folder, however, is (or at least should be) empty.
What you need to do is tell iTunes that your new default is now the Time Capsule. To do this, launch iTunes while holding down the "Option" key on your keyboard, select "Choose Library..." on the prompt, and browse for the library that you copied to the Time Capsule. Hope this helps! -
Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server
Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
- I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
- I manually manage my iTunes folders
- I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
- Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
- When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
The %20 just indicates a space.
Then each song will have its own path
<key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths?Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer? -
how can i save my individual playlist on itunes on my external hard drive because i want to buy a laptop and install itunes and move all my music and playlist thats on my desktop to my laptop and almost all of my music is from a bunch of cds i own

The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

itunes has removed my downloaded music from my library. I still have all of my purchased songs and videos but the downloaded songs are missing. I still have the downloaded songs on my cpu just not in my itunes library anymore. How do I get these songs back in my itunes library?
Copy them from the other user account you were logged in with to your own account. Or if you are using iTunes 10.3 or later and live in the use, redownload them via iCloud beta. See this article for more information.

When I drag and drop music to my iTunes, it starts copying files to the iTunes folder. Afterwards it scan's for loudness and artwork. That's all correct.
But after this I can't find the music in my Library, while it is resulted as search results. Also the songs are in different playlists (newly added and never played).
Only after about 45 min-1 hour the files áre in my library, without me doing or changing anything...
I use iTunes 11, never had this problem with iTunes 10.
Someone got any suggestions? Restarting iTunes won't work...Do you use iTunes Match? People have reported this can slow the process down.

I have an iphone 5 with ios 6.1.4. I just tried to sync my phone to my itunes acct to load new music onto my phone and it gave me a message saying that it was unable to sync b/c "the sync session failed to start". It let me download all pictures, but would not let me do anything else and just kept repeating the same message. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

My itunes wont let me put music onto my iphone
My itunes wont let me put music onto my iphone or take music off. Everytime I go to sync it it says I dont have enough space but I clearly have more than enough space left. I also am trying to take music off of my iphone so I can put new music on but everytime this box pops up and I really dont know what to do.
I think you have misunderstood the message you see.
The message states that you need an additional 1.93GB as well as the 3.93GB shown in the capacity bar. So it requires a total of 5.86GB.
There are a couple of things you can try:
Click on the OK button (in that message) and then deselect the media that you wish to remove. Once you have un-ticked the Playlists, or albums or whatever, click on the Sync button again to allow iTunes to Sync. It will then remove the un-ticked items, leaving space to add the 5.86GB that you are trying to add. If you continue to see the same message, but with a smaller additional amount required, then you have not deselected enough items.
Check how much space is being used by the "Other" category (shown in the capacity bar). While there will always be a small amount of Other on an iPod, anything over 1GB is probably not correct. Usually, a Sync will sort this out. If it doesn't then you may have to perform a Restore procedure, but I suggest you use that only as a last resort. -
My itunes is currently empty with no music in the library when i try and add music by dragging and dropping. (which used to work) i try and sync but it dont copy onto my touch. Any ideas?
I have tried restoring the ipod and also re-downloading itunes.You can only drag and drop if you have iTunes configured to manually manage music. With the iPod connected to the compute go to the Summary pane for the iPod and check the box under Options that says sync only checked songs and videos.

I just installed iTunes on my computer, where I already have all my music. I went to Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and changed the iTunes Media Folder Location to where I have all my music, in the "Local Disk." But iTunes wont import all my music. Help?
Have you looked in the Music App on your iPhone? On the iPhone music is played by the Music App not iTunes.

I have set up a second iTunes user account on my PC, but when I create the new iTunes account it copies the music, videos etc from the original account and they seem to be linked, so that when I delete a song from one library it deletes from the other one.
On the online tutorials I've seen it shows that when you create a new iTunes library it should open as a blank account, but that isn't happening.
What am I doing wrong?If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

When I purchase music through iTunes from my MacBook Pro, my iPhone 4 iTunes app cannot detect those purchase to allow them to download to my phone. If I open up the iTunes app and select "purchased > music > not on this iphone" it tells me "All of your available music has been downloaded to this device." However, my purchases are not yet downloaded to the iphone and not available to download. If I go to "purchased > music > all > recent purchases" it will show me the purchases that were most recent the last time I synced my phone, but not the purchases since then.
Any thoughts on how I can remedy this and make all of my purchased music available on my phone without requiring syncing?

Fortunately, AirPlay does not cost anything as it is a streaming protocol used by Apple. Currently, the AirPort Express and Apple TV are AirPlay-ready. A number of other companies, like JBL, iHome, Denon and Klipsch are also rumored to be working on AirPlay versions of their products.
Your other option would be to get an AirPort Express and connect it to your Onkyo analog or optical digital audio input and stream from iTunes that way. I currently do this with my 10+ year old Harmon Kardon HT receiver.
