Bizarre keyboard behaviour after 4.2 upgrade

Since upgrading to KDE 4.2 (from 4.1) as part of a system upgrade, my system has been practically unusable due to the bizarre keyboard behaviour within KDE.
Right from the KDM login screen, most of the keys do not work as normal.  For most letters, the key has to be pressed twice in order to generate the letter.  However, I cannot type anything with a "u" because it is interpreted as a shortcut to undo everything I have just entered!  Letter "f" has to be typed 4 times.  If I type "h" once it appears; if I type it again it disappears.  Letter "l" produces a vertical division in the window.  I could go on....
Since my password ends in "u" I even had to change the password in order to login to KDE because the "u" would delete the characters I'd already entered!  But once logged in the problem is just the same.
I have tried setting a different keyboard layout within KDE but this made no difference.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling KDE.
The problem seems to be KDE related, because outside KDE, in a system console, the keyboard works absolutely normally.  And it doesn't seem to be related to the individual KDE user, since as I said, the problem is present as soon as the KDM login screen appears.
Has anyone got any ideas please?

Thanks for the suggestions.  Although they did not prove to be the answer, I have now overcome the problem.  I suspect it was a one-off caused by corrupted data, probably in the xorg installation rather than KDE.  I removed xorg then reinstalled it - some of the pkg files were corrupt and had to be replaced.  Then I had trouble starting the X server at all, and had to reinstall several library packages.  The system is running more normally now, though I think there are still some data corruptions in there and time will tell whether the installation is salvageable.

  • Bizarre X behaviour after boot

    Hello,
I've recently done a fresh install on a new desktop, encrypted root with btrfs. I've installed minimal packages: base base-devel, xorg-server, xorg-xinit, xf86-video-nouveau, xf86-input-evdev, awesome, firefox and urxvt. Everything boots up fine, no errors.
When I startx (as a user and with a skel .xinitrc), the window manager loads and everything appears to be ok. However, launching firefox the UI becomes semi-unresponsive (I can't click any buttons, enter a URL etc.), but if I restart X everything works fine. I've also tried with openbox (nstead of awesome) and the same problem occurs - I can open a menu, launch firefox and shortly after the UI becomes semi-unresponsive, including the Openbox UI. I am just using firefox as an example, even loading just a urxvt will cause similar behaviour.
systemctl status shows no failed services
    journalctl shows no errors
My initial thoughts were something with dbus was not configured correctly. But I've exhausted the dbus and systemd wikis and everything appears to be correct.

  • Tecra 8000: Strange keyboard behaviour after reassembling

    Hi,
after reassembling the single keys to my keyboard from Tecra 8000 the keys have a strange behaviour. For example if i press the key 2 the display shows '82' or 'q'. if i hold the key longer, the display shows '2222222222222....', the right sign for the key.
Do you knwo, what i can do?
i had to reassemble the key because my little niece took all the keys off.
    thanks for your answer,
    Butch

    Hi
I agree with Daniel. There is some technical problem and only thing you can do is try to clean the contacts. If there is no success you should replace the keyboard. This unit is older one and I am pretty sure that you can find a cheap used keyboard.
    Bye

  • Not responding to keyboard/mouse after windows 10 upgrade

Hi, I upgraded my home computer yesterday to Windows 10. I came to work today and are trying to use my logmein for some offsite testing. I can connect just fine and see the desktop of my home PC, but no mouse or keyboard activity is responding. Even the "ctrl-alt-delete" function of the LogmeIn client does nothing. Has anyone experienced similar issues? And if so, is there a solution to this? I am running Windows 10 Enterprise x64 both at home and at work, and yesterday it was working fine when connecting from Win 10 Ent. at work to Win 8.1 Ent. at home. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Regards Dan

  • RDS Session Random Keyboard Behaviour After Unlock

    Hi,
I've got an issue which I'm pretty certain is related to the RDC client but I'm at a loss as to how to fix....
Server 2008 R2 running RDS, Desktops running Windows 7
    - User has RDS session full screen, they lock PC with ctl-alt-del, then unlock, typing on the keyboard results in random characters. Disconnecting and reconnecting RDS session resolves issue.
I though I had the cause pinned down to bug in the RDC client, starting in Shell v.6.2.9200 and still present in Shell v6.3.9600. By removing these updates, rolling back to Shell v6.1.7601 the problem went away. But the users are now reporting the issue
    again.
I could reproduce the problem on my laptop with Shell v6.2.9200 but after rolling back and forwards again the problem has gone. I'm aware there has been some RDP related updates over the last week or two but I haven't been able to confirm if they are relevant
    yet.
I've spent a lot of time looking in to this but can't find anything related, such as other people reporting same issue.
Anyone have any ideas or info or anything?
    Thanks, Jon.

    Hi Jon,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Which are the different updates has been installed recently?
The issue might occur because the remote desktop ActiveX object does not deactivate the focus of the remote desktop session when the focus is lost. Because the focus is still activated, the remote desktop ActiveX object cannot set the focus of the remote desktop
session again when you change the focus back to the session. Please try to download and install hotfix and check the result.
A remote desktop session does not respond to keyboard input or mouse input after it loses the focus in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2579381
in addition also suggest you to try with RDC 8.1 new version for Windows 7and check the result. Apart from this, also check beneath thread and article.
    1. Windows Key "stuck"
    2. Windows key "stuck" in Remote Desktop...
    Hope it helps!

  • Keyboard issues after upgrading to Leopard

Seems there's been quite a bit of discussion about this topic already but it's been confined to laptops and I haven't seen a solution yet. I'm seeing the same problems on a desktop computer using either a wireless or USB keyboard.
After upgrading to Leopard, my keyboard would occasionally stop responding to keystrokes. I have seen this happen on both an Apple USB keyboard and my Logitech wireless keyboard. With either keyboard, the letter and number keys would stop responding but keys like the CapsLock and Delete keys would still work. I have seen this happen when using Mac Office 2004 (Excel and Word) and Safari. With Excel, when the keyboard stops responding, if I click on a different cell, the keyboard comes back. I did update to 10.5.2 and I do have the latest version of the Logitech software but the problems still persist.
Strangely, I have only seen this happen on my MacPro but NOT my MacBook. There is a difference on how each machine was upgraded to Leopard though. On my MacBook, I did a clean install of Leopard on a new hard drive and then migrated my docs and apps from the old drive. On my Mac Pro, I did an upgrade installation over Tiger. Fortunately, I cloned my hard drive prior to installing Leopard so going back is an option and so is doing a clean install followed by a migration which is what I did on my MacBook.
Is there a fix for the keyboard problems? Am I going to have to downgrade back to Tiger?

Thanks for posting this. I thought I was alone in the universe. I have the problem with my mini, which came with Leopard installed. The USB keyboard will stop working in Word or Entourage ('04) and I have to close and reopen the document to get the keyboard going again. Thankfully, my mouse still works when this happens, so I can use it to close and save.
It seems to sometimes be triggered when I switch between applications, but I haven't been able to replicate it consistently. It is particularly bad when using find in Word. The find window will go dead and I have to close it and reopen it to do another search. (Though interestingly, I don't have to close the Word doc.)
    It's irritating.

  • Keyboard problems after upgrade to iOS 8.02

has anyone else had problems with the keyboard obscuring the screen since upgrading to iOS   8.02?. I cant see what I'm typing.

    Hey Dizzy blue,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iPad after updating to iOS 8.0.2. If you have not yet already done so, let’s try restarting or resetting your device:
If the issue persists after a restart, let’s see if we can isolate further by backing up and restoring your device as new:
iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
After erasing and setting up as a new device, your device is now in a factory configuration. Test to determine if erasing and setting up as a new device resolved the issue. Content on the device may have caused unexpected behavior.
If the issue is still present, you may want to contact Apple Support.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.

  • IPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade

I upgraded to OS4 on Saturday July 10th with no problems. On Sunday (July 11) I used my iPod quite a bit. I was at a friend's house and the battery was getting low so he charged it through his computer. It charged completely and we continued using it the rest of the day. I plugged it in to my PC to charge it Sunday night and it was not recognized at all (for charging OR for syncing) through any of the USB hubs. I asked my friend the method he used to charge it that day and he confirmed it was via computer. Monday night I tried charging it through a friend's iMac. It charged halfway, though it still wasn't recognized. Tuesday morning I tried to charge it on the same computer and I got the "too much power drawn from the USB hub - HUB deactivated" message on ANY of the HUBs. It still doesn't work on my own home computer (though it HAD been working Friday night and Saturday morning pre-OS4 installation).
I'm personally running Ubuntu 10.04 but obviously only was able to charge the iPod on that system. Anytime I want to sync or download music I restart to Windows Vista (and iTunes).
I do also have apps installed, but nothing new from the previous OS - (I know that blaming third party apps is a common cop-out answer for apple techs).
I hope this wasn't too confusing. My real problem is simply described by my subject line: iPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade. What follows is simply everything I've done to troubleshoot. The only thing I haven't tried is restore...because my iPod isn't even recognized by iTunes.
I would greatly appreciate any help or stories related stories/situations. Strength (and hopefully solutions) in numbers!
    Best,
    Dan

Assuming you haven't got the cords mixed up with another, older iPod, it sounds like you have a couple of problems:
    1. Your computer's USB ports have quit working. Reboot your computer and see if they reactivate.
    2. Your friend's iMac generated that message because you tried to charge the device from the low power keyboard USB port. iPods need to be charged off one of the main USB ports or a powered hub.
    3. iPods not being recognized by iTunes can be caused by 1) wrong cable; 2) non-functioning USB ports; 3) iTunes not being the correct version for the iPod OS; and finally 4) Apple Mobile Device Services driver is either stopped, missing, or disabled.
To troubleshoot a problem with Apple Mobile Device Services, see the Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1567

    Hi All
Upgraded to Snow Leopard today and then shortly after a successful upgrade, also upgraded Aperture to 2.1.4 via software update.
It now crashes almost immediately after launch giving the output below. It would seem that the "library not loaded" part would be the cause.

  • Bizarre Screen Display After MacBook Pro LogOut

Like many on this forum, I've had LogOut issues with my MacBook Pro -- specifically, having the screen resolution drop after logging out of any account -- the only way to correct the problem being a reboot. Many posts have offered fixes from discarding corrupt plists to changing other system preference settings. My understanding is that the problem can be solved by upgrading to Lion, though many stated that the problem could be solved by upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6.7, which did not work. I'm running 10.6.8 on a 17" Macbook Pro (mid-2010) and have still had this problem.
Compounding matters, yesterday, I downloaded and installed the latest Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.3; Security Update 2011-006; Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 6; Thunderbolt Software Update 1.0 and several native Mac App updates. I've repaired permissions and rebooted and now when I log out of any account, I get a bizarre screen -- not a reduction of resolution per se, but a reduction of the entire login screen... as if the image has been reduced by 25% or so... with a big blue border around two sides. See below:
    AFTER BOOT-UP:
    AFTER LOGOUT:
If upgrading to Lion would solve the problem, that would be great but I run several media-production apps and third-party hardware/software interfaces that are not quite onboard with Lion so I have to wait for a Lion Upgrade until my essential programs and hardware/software interfaces are completely Lion-friendly.
Surely there has got to be a way to get rid of this problem while still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    Anyone?

Your appointment at the genius Bar for an evaluation is free, in warranty or out.
They can explain why it wiggles, tell you whether that is normal or not, give advice about what you can do to reduce its annoyance, and fix it if it is not normal. That is what they are trained to do, all day every day.
There is no expectation that every time you visit they will find a way to make money off you, like a car dealership.
The Genius Bar service exists because Apple wants you to be a happy customer, if possible. If you are willing to make an appointement and come to them (spending your time and energy to do so) they will work with you for nothing in an attempt to solve your problems, whatever they may be.

  • Ipod sync error "copy disk failed..read or written to" after 7.3 upgrade

This happened immed. after 7.2 upgrade and it "magically" went away after about a week. Now, after 7.3 it is happening again. It will only sync up a few songs at a time, a podcast here an there, before giving the error message. Got rid of any potentially corrupt files, tried other usb ports, did a restore, did everything recommended for this error message. This is 5th gen video ipod on a g5. Why does this keep occurring after iTunes upgrades, and what to do about it?

i just got a 30gig and was trying to load it with
music and getting the same message. what finally
worked was unhooking a usb hub and just hooking only
the ipod and keyboard to the back of the pc. now i
have to figure out how to get the rest of my usb
equipment hooked back up so it won't interfer with
    the ipod.
    Try a powered USB hub...
