Bizarre pattern on screen

I have a white 13 inch MacBook that recently developed a strange pattern on the display. The pattern includes approximately 1/4 of the screen having an irregular shaped white blob with some straight solid colored lines coming from it in a random pattern. The pattern does not appear in the TIFF image if I do a screen capture using Grab. I have noticed that the screen also changes randomly depending on the angle of the rear hinge. Am I safe in assuming that all of these problems are due to a defect in the LCD screen? I will get a replacement LCD if that is the case.

Hi.
The problem you speak of sounds similar to my problems, just in an earlier stage.
I've made a thread about my problems, which have helped somebody else with the same problem too:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10596883#10596883
The problem is either the Screen (expensive) or the LVDS cable. Both can be replaced by you, if you follow youtube videos, and the parts can you get cheap on eBay. I choose to get it repaired by a Private Apple mechanic, and gave almost 1/3 of the Macbook's value for it (2000dkr)
Hope it helps.

  • Startup screen: bizarre patterns & flickers

I'm on my work's G5 flat screen iMac, X.3.9, 1.8ghs with 768 mb ddr sdram...
Over the past week, on startup, it chimes as normal and several kinds of things happen.
    1. a grey screen with a load of code, then a black square basically telling me to shut down and restart.
    2. a grey screen with the apple logo, but a scratchy flickery screen, like on old black and white TV set.
    3. a plain colour, usually green or orange with 1cm small dark horizontal dashes across the whole screen.
The past couple of days it does a combination of the above, and it takes about 3 shut downs/restarts to get to a normal start up. During the day there are no problems at all until the next morning when I start up.
Anyone recommend anything? Nothing too techy-speak, just simple instructions will do. All I've tried is PRAM, but it made no difference.
    Thank you
    Loo

Hmm. I'd say so. If you take all the memory out and clean the contacts on the motherboard (Q-tip works best) or just blow some air through them and then reseat the memory, that could help. System test is pretty darn reliable, but I'd just give that a shot before you end up buying a new stick of memory.

  • Intermittent problems with strange patterns on screen

My new (refurbed) 17in Intel Imac starts up periodically with a strange pattern running at 45 degrees across the entire screen (little multicolor boxes or rectangles) then the screen goes to all blue and freezes with no further activity. I have run the hardware test, reset pram and disk utility with no solutions. It will still boot up perfectly about every 3rd attempt. I'm running 10.4.10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using a backup afterwards, described in this article:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If the screen has still this pattern, the issue is hardware related and the phone needs to be serviced. In that case it might be enough to let Apple replace the screen.

  • Is my i7 MBP GPU malfunctioning?  Strange pattern on screen?

Happens in the morning after the computer has been sleeping all night.
    Diamond shape artifacting I guess?
Computer runs for about 3 minutes, then screen gets a strange pattern across it, then locks up.
Looks like this after the hard boot.

After I leave it on for a bit and let it warm up reset the power then it boots like this.

After it gets to the desktop things are really crashy and don't load properly, so a 3rd boot is needed.
After 3 reboots the problem goes away, so what ever it is I assume needs to warm up before it works right.
Its obviously hardware related, I suspect my logic board / GPU need to be replaced?
All this happens as soon as I move to Mexico where there are no Mac service places around!
Anyone know if mac will ship replacement parts for user serviceable components?

Unfortunately, this does have the look of a hardware problem, probably having to do with a graphics chip. Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? You might get an error code which would indicate where the problem is.
There is a way to contact Apple in Mexico--you might want to do that and see what options they can offer you:

    Good luck!

  • OS 10.6.8 Upgrade causing wave pattern across screen

Just installed OS 10.6.8 upgrade on my MB Pro 15".  On restart the display showed a wavy pattern of light and dark areas across the bottom of the screen.  Re-booted again, and same pattern showed up.  Rebooted a second time, but cleared the PRAM at the same time.  On completion of reboot, screen turned black and keyboard lights came on.  Computer completely locked up.  Conducted a hard reboot holding the off/on key down - and computer rebooted clean, with no further problems of a wavy screen.

[this is me replying to my own post]
Just spoke to a very helpful person in Apple Support and am posting what I learned in case it helps others. The person I spoke to encouraged me to go to the Apple Genius Bar of a retail store in order to have the computer tested. Apparently there is a "known video issue" with some MacBook Pros that the OS 10.6.8 upgrade reveals. That is, the problem has been there all along but something about this upgrade makes it apparent. I'm scheduled for a Genius appointment later today and will post anything useful I learn.

  • Bizarre Photoshop stuff - screen blanks on adding guide, etc...

I rummaged around, but didn't see any discussions of what I'm seeing, which probably means it's something bizarre and unique to my system, but...
    Windows 7 64-bit Professional, I7-920 running at 3.7 GHz, 12GB of DDR3 memory, several SATA 1 or 2 TB spindles, ATI 5770.  LR4.3, Photoshop CS6.
Generally, working on images from a Nikon D300 or Nikon D2X, both in .dng format, so nothing big or new to CS6.  Dell 24" primary monitor for just the image, cheap 22" monitor for all the palettes.
I'm having a couple bizarre things happen, and hopefully y'all can give me an idea where to look...  These are ALL INTERMITTENT - don't happen on every image.
    1.  On some images, when I zoom past approximately 50% the screen changes to the white/gray checkerboard instead of the image.  I put in a topic a while ago about this one, but despite making a few changes, this is still happening.
    2.  On some images, when I add a guide, as soon as I move from the ruler to the image area, the area blanks and I can't see where to put the guide.  If I move back into the ruler, the image re-appears.  If I release the guide in the image, the image re-appears.  But as long as I'm dragging the guide, the image is blank.
    3.  On some images, when I go into puppet warp, as soon as I add a pin, the image zooms so I can't see the entire image.  Until I cancel the warp I can't zoom back out.  As soon as I cancel the warp, my image returns to normal....
I absolutely know I didn't have any of these happening prior to upgrading to CS6.  ALSO, when it became available I installed the current driers for the ATI 5770 (10.12 or 12.10 or whatever it is).  Unfortunately, LR4 has some kind of problem with the current driver so I had to go back to 10.8 (I believe).  BUT, I have exactly the same problems with 10.12 that I have with 10.8, so if it's a video driver I'm not sure what SHOULD work.  Also, since I didn't have the problem with CS5, and the drivers don't change all that often, I had to be using 10.8 then too...
I previously had CS6 getting as much of the 12GB of memory as possible, but after recommendations in the LR forum, I cut it back to just slightly over what was recommended.
Even so, CS6 consistently uses at least 7GB when working on a image, and frequently the combination of LR and CS6 will use 10GB or more.
I'm not sure where to start on this, what to turn on, what to turn off, what to resize/change/fold/spindle or mutilate, so thoughts?

What you describe sounds like problems with the latest display drivers.
The driver version numbers you're listing are not accurate.  2012's drivers all start with 12, those in 2013 will start with 13, etc.
12.8 is the most recent version that works acceptably well with Photoshop.  If you installed 12.10 or one of the newer betas, you will have to have UNinstalled it first, then you would have had to reinstall 12.8.  It's important to make sure enough of 12.10 has been removed from your system to ensure 12.8 will work properly.
If you work with their tech support folks, ATI / AMD themselves propose a method for fully uninstalling a version of their driver to ensure it's been fully removed that includes a run of something like Driver Sweeper to clean out remnants their own uninstaller misses.
Myself, I've found that simply uninstalling 12.10 or 12.11 using its own uninstall facility seems to have been enough, but I wouldn't bet that that's true for every system.
Beyond that, try the different advanced modes in the Photoshop Edit - Preferences - Performance - Advanced GPU dialog (e.g., try Normal or Basic), making sure to restart Photoshop after each change.
Though it seems pertinent, it's really not consequential whether a system worked with Photoshop CS5.  The newer version makes more demands of the GPU because more functionality has been migrated to the GPU.
In summary, I use 12.8 (with a Radeon HD 7850), and I have found it to be reasonably stable and functional.  I suspect that because of the path you took to get to where you are you may have a combination of two driver releases installed.

  • Won't start up and has pattern on screen

Mac Pro running 10.6.8 won't start up and stalls out with just a funky pattern on a white screen. I have been able to do a Safe Boot and have run permissions tests/fixes but it still won't restart properly afterwards...  arrggggh

Clone it to another drive, in part to NOT use the old system for now, and weed out any and all 3rd party background drivers extensions and processes. Or do a clean install, install as much as possible from original master copies/installers.
And move all the data and media to another drive. All but your home folder library so your boot drive is only the system and apps and that small 3GB user data.

  • Even vertical stripy pattern on screen

    HELP!
I'm sorry if this is an 'old' problem for some of you but it's just happened to me so...
I'm getting a rather unusual vertical stripy pattern on my screen. The stripes are about 1 cm wide and evenly spaced. They're also on every window I have open. Shutting down or Restarts don't make any difference - they stripes are permanent.
Whimper...I'm also a poor student and really need to find a cheap way to fix this problem!
    HELP!

Thank you very much macuser08, I certainly do! So I hope you understand this code!

    Thanks again

  • Checkerboard pattern on screen instead of move

I want to watch a movie I have watched many times before.  This time it works fine on the screen but when I turn on Air Play the screen turns to a checkerboard pattern though the music audio runs.  Never had this happen before.
    Ideas?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache.
The Firefox cache temporarily stores images, scripts, and other parts of websites while you are browsing. <br>
Note: ''This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to.''
To clear cache and cookies, do the following:
#Tap the menu icon located at the top right corner. This is the icon with 3 bars. On older Android devices you'll have to press the hardware menu key and then tap More.
    #Tap '''Settings'''.
#After that, you will be taken to the settings screen. In the settings screen, look under the section '''''Privacy & Security''''' and select '''Clear private data'''.
#You will then be taken to a list of what can be cleared. Select the following 2 for deletion:
    #*Cookies & active logins
    #*Cache
#After those have been selected, tap the '''Clear data''' button to actually clear the cache and cookies.

  • Using pattern on screen

    Hi experts,
How can I create a pattern on a screen. For example I created a SCREEN 100. On the screen I have an input field. I want allow to write in the input field if it is according to a specific pattern.

    Hi,
First you would have to define the Particular Pattern wich you want to confirm with, say for example
    data g_pattern type string 'CF+H'.
In screen 100 in PAI---validate the input field
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    * To validate input
      FIELD g_input MODULE check_input.
    MODULE check_input INPUT.
         IF  g_input CP g_pattern.
    *     code
        else.
    *    Raise message to input as per the patter
        endif.
    ENDMODULE.
so if user input 'ABC123FGH' IT will be true.

  • Moire pattern on screen

Ther is a moire pattern on my screen. Why?

    Hello
simple way to try diagnose a visual problem is to take a snapshoot of part of screen you think is defective
    - if your visual problem not appear on snapshoot file could be a screen problem
    - if your visual problem can be see on snapshoot file could be a vram / mother board / graphic card problem
to take a snapshoot use cmd-shift-3 or cmd-shift-4 , that create file on desktop
second way is to plug an external display see if problem is same or not

  • Chunky bit map pattern on screen and will not start up

Please help! My MacBook Pro started doing this thing about a week ago where a chunky bitmap pattern would appear on the screen and the computer would freeze, but you could still see the screen behind the pattern. Somtimes this happens after running awhile. Sometimes it happens right on start up. Sometimes it works fine for a day or two. Now I cannot even get my Mac to start up!! You see blips and lines on the screen the second it lights up. The apple logo appears and you see the spinning wheel, then the screen turns blue and is still full of squares, lines, etc. usually in a diagonal pattern. Something is VERY wrong, but I dont' know what. Since I live in Jamaica, shipping is very expensive and there is no Apple store to bring it to. If the machine is fried and needs repair, how can

    Hello!
This would be easier to diagnose if we had more info about your MBP model. There are a number of variants and each may have its own issues.
Do "About this Mac..." from the Apple Menu and then click "More info..." in the resulting window. That launches System Profiler and the first page will identify your specific model. For example; mine looks like this:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B05
    SMC Version: 1.16f10
    Serial Number: xxxxxxxxx
Post that info, being sure to delete the serial number like I did. That info will precisely identify which MBP you have and, hopefully lead to assistance.

  • Macbook Pro displays a diagonally patterned screen

My MacBook Pro will begin to boot when the screen suddenly becomes distorted by an alternately patterned gray screen. I have performed 2 safeboots and after them, it seems to work fine for just a few (3,4) boots after that. One time when it booted successfully, the screen's background light began to flash very quickly until the screen was distorted again like in the beginning.
I've tried cleaning the PRAM and the NVRAM also but it did not fix the problem.
Can somebody help with this? Does anyone know what's causing the problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
By-the-way, it won't even turn on right now. :-|

Looks like graphics chipset problem. Please take it the Apple store and see what can they do for you.
    Best.

  • 2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on the screen

2008 mbp boots up with weird pattern on screen then says needs to restart but won't restart. Saw something about nvidia graphic card went bad and apple was replacing for free. Is that something apple is still doing and does that sound like my issue?

I know this is an old post, but people reading it may be interested by these two links:
    http://totalpoop.com/apples-2008-macbook-pro-nvidia-graphics-card-recall.htm
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
I got this problem with my previous 2008 Macbook Pro, and it appeared just after the recall ended! Here in Canada, Apple is charging close to $500 to replace the motherboard (and the graphics card). Recently, I discovered a computer chop in Montréal where they told me they can replace the GPU for $200. I left them my computer and will get it back in a week or so. I hope it will fix the problem.

  • Debugging the "Pattern" functionality

    Hi,
       Have a look at this:
       /people/puru.govind/blog/2006/11/17/trick-debugging-insert-statement-screen
Is this the only way to achieve this?
    Regards,
    Pooja

    Hi Uwe,
Finally it is good for something!
Thank you for that hint. I always thought it is not possible to enter debug mode from a popup - now I can!
I think meanwhile I understand the meaning of "pattern" in the blog: It is just this pushbutton you can use to insert staments for CALL FUNCTION, MESSAGE and so on. The author want's to tell us how we can analyze the code of this functionality without stepping through the debugger until the pattern popup screen comes up. OK. Although I'm convinced this is not the only way to find out how the pattern functionality works.
Anyway, I think the 'drag-debug-icon' may be quite helpful.
    Regards,
    Clemens
