BIzarre!? - Peaks of audio file higher in the negative side...

I've just been recording some bass today through my Avalon 737 into a Metric Halo ULN-2....
When i look at the audio file in sample editor it seems that the peaks are noticeably higher on the negative side of the waveform. - The file 'clipped' and reached (-100) many times but only (+100) on a handful of occasions...
Is this normal or is there something wrong with the preamp or audio interface?
many thanks

Hello again,
Ok, I've done a quick test today for two things:
1. DC offset - logic analysed the tracks and said 'no dc offset found'. Although the troughs seem to be noticeably bigger than the peaks at the start of the notes, towards the end of the notes (bass gtr) the peaks were higher than the troughs. - i suppose this cancels out over the duration of the full note?
Then you do NOT have and DC voltage issues. From now on, IGNORE any and all comments on DC offset. You don't have any. This is a good thing.
2. However, I've looked at every note and each one starts with a trough when first plucked - so assume i have -ve phase in my setup from what you previously said - this is the case with both the preamps in the ULN-2 and with the Avalon 737 as a pre and using the ULN2 as just an AD convertor.
I suspect bad wiring. Check the wiring for your equipment, and FOLLOW what the mfr recommends you should use for their equipment.
MOST (99%) of gear that has BALANCED wiring, is wired as follows:
For an XLR connector :
PIN 1 = GROUND
PIN 2 = COLD voltage.
PIN 3 = HOT voltage.
For TRS (1/4" Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connectors:
SLEEVE = GROUND
RING = COLD voltage.
TIP = HOT voltage.
Cheers
Is there anyway that I could reverse the phase that's coming from the ULN 2 going into the computer?
Yes. Re-wire your setup. Someone is not playgin nice with the pinouts...
I can only assume negative phase in the audio files would be a problem if the > software instruments produce positive phase audio when playing?
Absolutely. this is probably why, when you mix, some notes sound thin, while others sound too big and boomy. And you have to do extreme EQing to correct the issue.
Does that make any sense?!
It does to me.
thanks again for all your help,
J

  • All audio files "hiccup" at the 10 second point

I've been using iTunes for about six months and have just encountered a new problem.
For all my audio files(about 2500, at the 10 second point of playback the playback distorts and clicks for about a second and then continues to play properly. This is a new problem for me, and I haven't made any recent changes to hardware or software on this machine. And...the files themselves seem to be fine and playback cleanly on Windows Media Player and other audio programs. Also, this occurs regardless of whether or not other programs are running simultaneously.
    Any thoughts?

The virus checker thing is a quick fix if it works, but mostly it doesn't except with NOD32.
It sounds as though you have tried the audio playback problems page?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
You need to be sure you are upto date with your drivers and that you are on the latest version of iTunes, but I am afraid this can be an intractable problem for some people. I never got 7.0 to work properly and went back to 6.05. But 7.1 has works fine for me.
It is normal to get a peak in processor usage around track changeover, mine goes up to about 20% briefly. A lot of accesses to the library files and preference files go on then.
Sorry I can't be more help.

  • How do you start 2+ audio files playing at the same time?

I am trying to play 2 audio files at the same time, but I cannot figure out how to start them playing at the same time without latency issues.
If someone can please explain the process for doing this using Audio Queue Services, I will forever be in your debt.
This is for iPhone, but I was getting no love in those forums on this issue.

Thanks for your reply. Apple's iPhone Application Programming Guide states the Following:
    *Playing Multiple Sounds Simultaneously*
To play multiple sounds simultaneously, create one playback audio queue object for each sound. For each audio queue, schedule the first buffer of audio to start at the same time using the AudioQueueEnqueueBufferWithParameters function.
This leads me to believe that it is possible. I have just not been able to get them to play precisely the same time, there is always delay.

  • How to prevent an audio file to play the second time the users enter the screen?

    Hi there
I have a request from my client. She wants the audio file I have on one slide not to play again when the users return to that screen. Is it possible to do that using conditions? I searched the forums but couldn't find anything like this.
    I am using Captivate 5.5.
    Thank you in advance.

I explained that both in workshops for advanced actions and in a presentation (Lectora vs Captivate) at DevLearn. In this blog post an example, with short explanation can be found:
    http://lilybiri.posterous.com/playtime-with-audio-and-widgets
The idea is to link the audio not to the slide but to an 'invisible' object (I even have a Highlight box style for that). When entering the slide the first time you show the object and audio will play, when entering afterwards it will be hidden again. This implies the use of a user variable to track the first visit, and a conditional action. If you need more info, just ask for it.
In CP6 another approach would be possible, using the new statements Play audio and Stop Triggered Audio.

  • Having problems with pro audio under Vista on the Intel side?

This article has some extremely interesting information about that and might be helpful.
    http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html
    IMac

    Is this for real?
"Since S/PDIF doesn't provide any content protection,
Vista requires that it be disabled when playing
protected content [Note E]. In other words if you've
sunk a pile of money into a high-end audio setup fed
from an S/PDIF digital output, you won't be able to
    use it with protected content.
    Very real!
I have heard the writer in an interview on a security program
and they went into all the problems this is going to cause.
There are people who have bought large screen tvs that
will not work with Vista because the company did not put
the required hardware into the device,(because they did not
want to pass the cost on to the consumer and raise the price
of their product). Not only that but the required DRM that is
mandated in connected devices is supposed to disable itself if
it senses someone trying to get around the protection.
Plus, if you create your own HD or high quality audio, who is
to say that Vista wont try and protect it from yourself!
Microsoft has bowed down to the movie industry by putting this
so far down into the core of the operating system that I see this
as a incentive to piracy and switching platforms.
Say your on a skype call and you start playing a piece of music
with DRM, your connection would probably be gone since audio
    is all routed the same.
A fluctuation of voltage could be interpreted as a attack and trigger
tilt bits that cause subsystems to reboot and denial of license to
drivers. So just a power surge could cause some of your system
to stop working not because of the surge but because Vista
    felt threatened.
The real pirates will figure out how to get around this and
it will just be a problem for normal users.
I new they were not bright but this takes stupidity to a whole
    new demension.

  • Why are Garageband 10 audio files larger than the previous version?

I was working with Garageband 10 creating note files for my iPad app.  When I exported them as aif format, the file size was 2.1 mb.  When working with Garageband 6, the aif file sizes were 1.1mb.  Since Apple limits the file sizes of apps that are submitted to the App store, I can't use Garageband 10 with its new instruments.  Is there any way to decrease the aif file size and still keep the same format?  Thanks for any help!

Since QuickTime X doesn't have any export "options" (other than dimensions) a "raw" DV Stream format should always be smaller in file size.
DV Stream is about 13 GB's per hour of recording. A QuickTime X "conversion" would use H.264 video and AAC audio codecs and should be about ten times smaller in file size.
Are you sure your files are DV Stream?
In any event, QuickTime X may not be the best tool for the job.
QuickTime Player Pro doesn't re-compress the source codec if you use a simple "save" or "save as".
A regular "save" after doing any edits will replace your source file with the newer version. No way to restore any of the edited information so you should use save as (keeping the original).

  • Keynote is an amazing tool for preparing presentations. However, keynote for iOS devices(e.g. iPad) doesnot have the simple way to add audio files in to the files. When we will have the update to add music files right into the keynote slide?

I have been using Keynote for presentation slides to be used in conducting training sessions. Though, Keynote has beautiful interface with elegant transitions to animate, it doesnot provide any way to add audio or music files into the slides in iOS devices alone. I have been waiting for the update to add this very feature, but cannot find it yet. When could we have this upate?

Send Apple feedback and tell them what you want. However, many app versions of programs are skinnied down, and that functionality may not be workable in the App version. Can't know until you suggest it to them however.
Lower right corner of this page, the contact us link, give it a try.

  • Can you raise audio level on just the left side of a stereo track?

Video with two lavs and two channels but capturing as stereo. One of the lavs is really low. Anyway to just raise that one side? I have Premiere CS5.52 and Audition 5.5 but don't see an obvious way to do what I need in either program.
    Thanks for any help.

    Jim Simon wrote:
For myself, I prefer the Fill effects.  That'll center the channels.  You'll have to duplicate the audio track and use Fill Left on one and Fill Right on the other, but you end up with easily adjustable audio.
But doesn't that leave you with two same mono tracks with the whole signal from both channels in there?
For me the easiest way is either apply the Channel Volume effect from the effects panel to the audio clip in the timeline
or, as Bill suggests, the Break out to Mono from the context menu to the source clip in the project panel.

  • Using The Same Audio Files On Multiple Platforms

When I import new audio into logic - often it will say that is creating wave forms for the display.
Q: I notice that the audio files on disk do not show an altered modified date - so where are these wave form displays being saved - on the audio file or inside the logic song?
Q: I am interested in possibly going back and forth between logic and Pro tools LE - and at different times using the same audio files for both platforms. Assuming I am not doing any destructive editing - is it OK to use the same set of files for both platforms - or do I need to make duplicates (I'd rather not)? Also, how does this wave form display get dealt with by going back and forth between the two platforms?

A: the waveform overlays are stored in separate,
temporary files - *.ovm files or something, but my
memory is fuzzy on that for now. The original audio
files are not modified in any way.
Hmmm... I've wondererd about this, too, and as best I can tell, Logic DOES modify the original files.
I just imported some stereo interleaved AIF files into a project (with "copy external audio files to project folder" disabled), and I couldn't see any evidence of waveform creation--a disk search by date revealed nothing looking like waveform overviews, and there were no modifications to the AIF file dates.
So... the next time I imported some AIF files, I checked the file sizes before the import...
Sure enough, the files got bigger by about 100K after being imported into a Logic session, even though the file's timestamps were not changed.
Looks like maybe Logic does write the waveforms into the files themselves ?
On a related note, the manual suggests that it's possible to change the "copy external audio files to project folder" setting after creating a project, but I haven't found this anywhere other than File->New... anyone know ?
    Thanks!

  • Where does Keynote store the audio files in a presentation

I have slides with individual audio files. When I import or attach the file and then save the presentation, it changes the file name to .mov extension. Where does Keynote store those files? I would like to edit the saved Keynote version, but cannot locate the .mov file!

I'm not exactly sure of what you want to do, and I'm not sure if my answer is the most efficient, or even wholly correct, but here goes ...
When you save a KN presentation (a KN doc) which includes an audio (or movie) file, you can save it 2 (3?) ways: either without or with the file being copied into the document, or as a "package". In a test file I just made with 3 white slides (title, slide with song, second slide with song) the results:
without: 3.8 MB; with: 9.4 MB; package: 9.4 MB. The essential difference, aside from size, is that if saved without, if you play the KN on another machine which doesn't have those audio files on it, the audio won't be there. To make the KN truly portable, you must save with, or as a package. (I'm not too sure of the concept of package in KN. In PP, saving as a package means you end up with a folder, which contains the PP and the media files, each as separate entities. Saving a KN package yields not a folder but a file, which looks to me identical to the result achieved by simply saving with, and seems to behave identically, as well.) The audio file you used will in any case remain where it was before you used it, but, if the KN doc is saved with, or as a package, a copy of it will go into the KN doc.
But then, what do you mean by "edit"? What do you want to edit, the KN presentation, or the audio file within it? If the former, I don't understand where the problem might be. If the latter: using the QT inspector within KN, you can change the length of the audio file (where in the song it starts and stops), whether to start it on click, or automatically after transition, or to loop it. If you wanted to do some other, more exotic audio editing, like reverbs or other effects, I'd do that on (a copy of) the original audio file (found wherever it was before) with another app (GarageBand, for instance), and then I'd replace the first, non-edited, version of the audio file in the KN doc with that.
    Have I missed something?
Message edited by gbdoc: maybe someone will chime in to clarify the difference between "saved with" and a "package"

  • Duplicates in iTunes:  Should I delete the Purchased AAC Audio file?

I show two different file types and sometimes 3.  Sometimes it will say MP3, which I assume is one that came from a CD or something.  If I need to delete duplicates, should I delete the "Purchased AAC Audio file"  or delete the "AAC Audio File".  What's the difference?

"Purchased AAC Audio" refers to files that came from the iTunes Store.  "AAC Audio" refers to files in AAC format that came from some other source, such as ripping a CD, or doing a conversion with iTunes.
If you only want to keep one file, it does not really matter which one you delete.

  • How do I get iTunes U to play all files, right now it stops after each audio file and I will have to manually select the next one.

I am unable to find a way to get iTunes U to play all audio files one after the other without me manually playing each one of them.

Best I've managed is to create a smart playlist in iTunes with the album set to the title of the course.  Have the smart playlist update automatically so that any new postings from the course are included within the playlist. After that you should be able to play the playlist and have all the audio files play one after the other.  Hope it helps!

  • How do I change the length of an audio file?

How do I change the length of an audio file without changing the actual recording?
I want to aligne start and end points to the rest of my project.

Well, yes and no. I have tried the Bounce track in place function, but it did not do what I was after. However, today I got an idea that solved the problem. I copied the region I had punched in several times. Then I used the Bounce track in place function. This made a track that was just as long as all the other tracks. Finally I silenced the audio "clips" that I had used to make the region longer. I have now 24 tracks to transfer to the Alesis HD 24 that starts, and ends, at the exact same point. This will suit the Alesis software just fine, I think.
    Thanks for the tips.
