Bizarre problem: Safari down but Skype works

Very strange issue with my MBP. It connects seemingly fine to my work network, but Safari, Mail, and any other internet applications fail to access the net. Skype, strangely, works totally fine.
The network works fine for everyone else (and my Blackberry) so I don't think it's a router issue.
Initially, I suspected it was a AirPort issue, as on my list of networks, the network isn't showing the lock that denotes a secured network, even though the network is secured, and when it's worked successfully in the past, it's always displayed the lock. However, I also tried connecting to the router via ethernet and exactly same set of problems exist.
Network diagnostics seem to think everything's fine and that a successful internet connecting exists. I've tried changing the IP address via manual configuration (currently DHCP) with no joy, and have also tried deleting the network from the trusted list and removing its password from Keychain before connecting again from scratch, also without any success. I've also tried flushing the DNS cache.
My gut feeling says it's some sort of DNS connectivity issue, and Skype is connecting to the net in a slightly different way and therefore is unaffected... but as to how I go about actually fixing it, I'm stumped.

- What error message are y ogetting?
- Frist try another network. Maybe the network is blocking those sitee.
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- Go to Settings>wifi>the connected network and change the DNS to Google's 8.8.8.8
In the future saying :ive tried everything" provides use with no information as to what you did try. If you truly tried everything there is not way anyone could help.

What Extensions do you have installed in Safari, and is Glims one of them?
Try turning them all off in Safari>Preferences>Extensions and also in Glims (if installed - I think it has its own set of Preferences) and then test.

Connection down - but now working

Just a little positive for a change. Came home Thursdays to see my HH3 with a yellow broadband light. Rebooted everything and it seemed to be OK for a little while, then disconnected. It then kept doing the same, the DSL light on the modem would start flashing then remain steady for a bit and eventually it just kept flashing.
My wife called support and got through fairly quickly. They did a line test, called back and said an engineer would need to come out. The earliest appointment I could get was on Saturday but I was going to be out all day so the next available would be today (Tues). Not much that could be done with the bank hols. BT called to confirm the engineer appointment for this morning and they turned up early and swapped the modem out. Apparently engineer said there had been a faulty batch and mine was one of em. And we should be getting a rebate for the days it was down.
So not all problems are a massive endurance test.

Can't Access Internet or E-mail but Skype Works

I am no longer able to access the Internet using Safari or Firefox and cannot send or receive e-mail using the Mail application. However, Skype works which indicates there is an Internet connection. Attempts to ping Internet locations fail. I also have a Windows XP computer which is able to connect to the Internet using the same Internet connection as my MAC. I am stumped on this one.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any help is appreciated!!

Error 8 in iChat....but Skype works - any suggestions?

Hi everyone.
I'm having trouble connecting to contacts I have been able to reach before. I have moved and am connected to a network someone left open somewhere in my neighbourhood..... Everytime I try connecting to a contact for a video or audiochat ichat writes the error message at the bottom. I'm not having any trouble whatsoever connecting both audio and video through Skype though.... Does anyone have a good suggestion?

I didn't read the report, but I'd have to say that if you don't have any control over the network through which you're connecting, the chances of solving the problem are not good.
You probably would be better off trying another Internet connection or even getting one of your own.

Why does flash no longer work in viewing SnagFilms or Hulu under Safari Browser but still works for Netflix. And, where can I receive directions on how to install the PPAPI Plug In for Flash Player for Maverick 10.9.4.

Until recently, I was able to watch both SnagFilms and Hulu within the Safari Browser successfully. In both movie sites, I no longer get video and am asked to download Adobe Flash Player (which I already have 14.0.0.125) but my system indicates that Plug-In PPADI has not been installed? Where to go to find this correct download? When consulting with SnagFilms and Hulu, it was recommended that I download and watch in the Chrome Browser, which is successful. However, I don't like the idea that I must run a second browser to do stuff on my Mac. I don't have any issues with watching films under Safari within Netflix. I am so confused. What about the security issues with respect to running google products--do I need to be concerned if this is the only method for accessing my movie sites.

The problem is that your Flash Player is not current. Check this to see what the current version is (vs what you have) and here to get the latest version. There is supposed to be a major security issue in the version you've got so Apple is blocking its use. In any case, don't get Flash Player from anywhere except Adobe.

Safari fails but Opera works

I am trying to reach a web site using Safari on my iPhone 3GS, but it fails to connect (although it worked a month or so ago). When I try to reach the same web site using the Opera app it successfully connects.
Any ideas as to why and how to get Safari working? Updating OS didn't help.

so forms[0].myform is duplication - looking for the form twice.
When debugging javascript, I would suggest writing into the address bar like this:
javascript:alert(document)
javascript:alert(document.myform)
javascript:alert(document.myform.myelement)
It executes the javascript directly from the address bar. Building up the javascript expression, you can see where you take a "wrong turn"

Adobe flash player download stops and asks me to close safari, i have shut safari down but it still won't complete and install

I'm trying to download adobe flash player for my IMac so I can watch vidios on you tube. It gets half way through the install and then it stops and asks me to turn off safari, I close safari and press continue but it pops up again. Please help. Regards Nick

     Press the "Delete All" button
     Install Adobe Flash Player.

    Follow the prompts.
    Click "Safari" in the menubar and select “Quit Safari”.
    Restart computer. Relaunch Safari.
2. Allow Plug-ins
    Safari > Preferences > Security
    Internet Plug-ins > "Allow plug-ins"
    Enable it.
    Press " Manage Website Settings" button for more options.

Safari stopped, but firefox works

Hello,
I use safari (2.04) and camino (1.04)as my
browsers. Last week suddenly both stopped connecting
to the internet.
camino error is as follows:
"The connection was refused when attempting to contact the proxy server you have configured. Please check your proxy settings and try again."
safari error is:
Safari can’t open the page “http://apple.com/” because it could not connect to the server “apple.com”.
I have downloaded camino again and it still does not connect. I can not find safari downloads.
However Firefox (2.0) works fine.
I prefer to use camino / safari. Any help in
solving this matter is appreciated.

You're welcome. Not sure what triggers the "proxy" designation during the update, however, whenever you see the "proxy error message", the Network Proxy setting is the best place to check first.

Gmail access fails on safari. But it works when i login as administrator. Please help!

I am unable to use gmail from a regular user account on my iMac.It fails with an error string that ends with "... becasue Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server "accounts.google.com". "
I have tried resetting safari and it does not help.
I have tried adding DNS entries based on some discussion board suggestions and that does not help either.
I am able to access gmail as an administator on the same machine though!
Please point me in the right direction, please! Thanks!

You may have to take the computer to the Apple store to have the computer checked out.

I am having a DNS problem with my computer. My laptop connects to the internet and my skype works normally but when i try to surf the web it says "DNS Look up failed".

I am having a DNS problem with my laptop. It connects normally to th e wifi internet but when i try to surf the net it says "DNS Look up failed"
This problem only occurs when with the internet at my house. whenever i connect elsewhere my computer works normally. My ipod, iphone, tablet and other friends computers work normally when they are connected to my internet. i use dmy neigbours nework a couple of times from my house and it wrks normally.
Also when i turn my laptop on or off i can browse for a few minutes or seconds before it fails again. My skype works like there is no problem
WHAT I HAVE TRIED TO RESOLVE IT
I have tried changing the DNS, i used open DNS and google free DNS and it still didnt make a difference.
I have rebooted router many times, nothing
I have changed my home router, nothing
I backed up my computer, resored everything it to factory setting and put everything back on; still nothing
Run a diagnostics at 'Best buy' and they say nothing is wrong; but i know there is something wrong with the DNS
I have tried different "sudo" type of codes on my comupter from stuff i got online and nothign has proved fruitful yet.
i tried using safari, Google chrome and firefox, all not loading

You are correct. Airport Extreme Skype works, but not mail or Safari? Port issue?

So I have a weird issue with my AE.
Often the internet will just go away...Safari will not work, iChat will not work and mail will not work. Today when it happened I noticed Skype was still logged in and working. I hadn't noticed this previously since I just this week installed Skype. When I am having an issue with my MacBookPro the MacBook in the house also has the same issue so it can't be my computer.
I also don't think its comcast because of the whole Skype working fine thing. Also when I "borrow" someone elses wifi connection everything works...mail works, Safari, etc...
So it must be something with my Airport Extreme. The only thing I can think of is some port issue. The AE has the lastest firmware from a month ago or so...
This tends to happen about once a week for a few hours and then it suddenly gets better for no apparent reason. The AE is in a cabinet in the entertainment center so it gets a bit warm in there sometimes but this morning it was pretty cool in the house and it still did it so I don't think its heat related...
Any other thoughts?

naw i'm back in the states now so it's pretty much no longer an issue. thanks though! If you know anything about mirror agent and logout issues you could look at my other question in using mac OSX Tiger called "mirror agent & failed logout -- HELP!"
