Bizarre results importing imovie into final cut express?

I have filmed different interviews which were captured in imovie. I am now trying to import them into final cut express. But when I import one interview called, say, Gavin I get Karen's interview instead. The clip is labelled Gavin but the footsage is from a different interview. No matter who I import I get a completely different project and there is no rhyme nor reason to the footage that opens up.
Basically I get the wrong footage with every clip I open.
Please help before I end up in the loony bin!
Exasperated,
Clare

I bought Final cut express just after capturing all my files in imovie (having heard that it was supposed to be easier to cature and trim in imovie before sending the files to fce - is this what you have heard?). If it weren't for a solid week capturing and trimming 40 hours of film I would recapture in fce!!
I have even replaced the captured media within the scratch folder but still it opens the wrong files.
The files are labelled as the interviewees name. All the books say that you can import imovie projects into fce and then render and save as fce files.
I have tried various methods of importing, opening and even dragging a clip straight from imovie into the browser of fce - which works but opens an original untrimmed version rather than the short trimmed version and again it will be an interview of the wrong person.
I have since been turning the imovie files into .mov files and opening them in fce - this seems to work but hope there is no change to quality.
Would this be the way to go? I would so appreciate an answer!
Thanks

I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs.  Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?

Open the file in QuickTime Player. Then do Tools > Show Movie Inspector.  What does it say for Format and FPS?
At 59GB, I suspect you have either a 4 hour DV video or a 1+ hour video that was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.   If it's either of those, you can import it directly into FCE provided you select the appropriate Easy Setup first.  Your clips have to match the properties of the Easy Setup you are using.
If it's neither DV or AIC then you need to convert it to one of those codecs.  (QuickTime/DV or QuickTime/AIC)  Many people in this forum rely on MPEG Streamclip (it's free and works great).

  • Importing Files into Final Cut Express

I have a technical issue that I hope someone can assist me with...
I recieved 2 harddrives full of video clips that were shot in HD from a video production house. Here is the content on the drives: CARD 1 (folder), inside this folder there are 2 items (CONTENTS & LASTCLIP.txt) in the CONTENT folder are the following folders : AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, VIDEO, and VOICE.
My question/dilemma: Can I import these clips into Final Cut Express to edit? I have an older version of Final Cut HD that won't work with these files.
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.
    -Greg

HELP ! Anybody, please help !
As you can probably guess. I've reached the limit of my "expertise" with your files ....... ".XML" sounds familiar but you will have to hang around for someone else to tell you whether and how they can be used.
One thing I am sure about (I think!) is that the latest version of FCE will be no better than the older one you have.

  • Importing itunes into final cut express

I just bought an IMAC with Final Cut Express to do all my video editing of my kids activities. I used Pinnacle Studio on my old PC prior to this but it finally gave out. I downloaded some music CD's I had into itunes and then tried importing the music into FCE. This is not working. I have no problem adding it to my imovies but it will not work with FCE. The music format is m4a which I think is typical.
I went to You Tube and watch several tutorials from some of fellow FC users and still cannot get it to work. There must be something I have to set up in FCE to get this to work but I do not know what that is. I been looking around the program and have not been successful. Any help any of you can provide would be great. Thanks.. Ron

Hi Ron, and welcome to the FCE Forum !
You should convert the audio files to AIFF, 48KHz (aka 16-bit) stereo before importing them into FCE. Neither CDs nor iTunes songs are in that format. You can use iTunes to do the conversion.
With a new Mac and Snow Leopard you probably have iTunes9. Open Preferences, then go to General > Import Settings, then select AIFF and set Custom Settings as 48KHz, 16-bit, stereo. Save the settings. Then in your music library, select the song(s) you want to convert and do Advanced > Create AIFF version. (Note: the format you selected in Import Settings controls what the Advanced > Create menu option does.)

  • Trouble importing .mov into Final Cut Express

I have a number of video clips given to me by a client in Italy and provided as .mov files. I can view them in Quicktime with no problem. I want to edit them. I have Final Cut Express 4 and when I import the files, I can see the file listed, I can hear the audio play but I can't see the video. Is this a conversion problem of some sort? Do I need to convert it first into a different format — if so, what format and what conversion software do you recommend (I tried a couple of free ones to no avail).
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi everybody,
I've solved the problem by installing Final Cut 6 (latest version): when drag and drop the clip, the settings instantly suit to the clip properties (making rendering un-necessary).
The images are still stretched but, when I deselect "Show as Sq. Pixel" from the first of those 3 menus on the canvas display, images suddenly appear exactly as I wanted (even the images quality is exactly the same as the source).
Now the problem is Compressor (still latest version):
I've tried to convert with a lot of presets, but images are still vertically stretched and images are not as clear and sharp as the source.
    Which is the right preset??
    Thank you!

  • Importing MXP into Final Cut Express

I can't import video recorded on my Canon HF11 in MXP mode into FCE or iMovie 9. I have Final Cut import set to apple intermediate codec 1920 x 1080i 60. when i try to log and import it crashes FCE. Any ideas please?

Did you do a forum search?
There are a lot of things that might cause problems. Audio set to matrix stereo rather than plain stereo might be a problem. Having Perian installed might cause problems. Capturing to a drive that isn't properly formatted can be a problem.

  • What is the correct way to import AVCHD into Final Cut Express?

The Final Cut Expres user manual (p. 221) says to import AVCHD footage with HDV Apple Intermediate Codec: "Important: Use the HDV - Apple Intermediate Codec Easy Setup for ingesting AVCHD footage."
But, Easy Setup has options for both HDV AIC AND AVCHD AIC.  Why are there choices for AVCHD if the manual says to import AVCHD with HDV?

    The manual is incorrect/human error/typo.
HDV and AVCHD do share the Apple Intermediate Codec as all this incoming footage will be converted to AIC so FCE can work with it on a frame by frame basis.
Call up the FCE>Easy Setups and look at the options.
You will notice 6 options (FCE 4.0.1) for 1080i with differing frame sizes and frame rates.
Only ONE of these is correct for the type of footage to be captured/ingested from the camera.
You need to know what the camera settings are, then output to FCE with an exact matching Easy Setup.
These days one camera can be set to different options making this decision one based on knowing how to operate the camera menu and select the right options.
When an FCE Easy Setup is changed only NEW Sequences will reflect the change not existing ones. In fact, in many cases, if the Easy Setup and incoming footage don't match it simply won't work causing the user to curse the Apple software.
First step is to select the correct Easy Setup then capture/ingest.
For AVCHD it will be an AVCHD - Apple Intermediate Codec........................
    Example:
    Camera has shot AVCHD 1920x1080i50
Easy Setup will be AVCHD - Apple Intermedaite Codec 1920x1080i50
The above example is for PAL interlaced, that's what i50 means.
NOTE:   FCE will not work directly with p (progressive) footage so make sure your camera shoots i (interlaced).

  • Importing music into Final Cut Express?

Got "file error/unknown file" message after trying to import music into FCE. The music source are tapes I digitized using Garage Band and are now saved in my "music" folder as mpeg-4 (m4a). What to do? Do I need to re-digitize the tapes to a different file type? Do I need to convert the files? Or is there a way to import that I am missing? (I tried "import / files" and I also tried just dragging the files into the project window. The music plays fine in itunes and are individual files.
ADDED:  I now notice that when I try to "import / files" all my other audio does show up correctly when I click to "sound files" except from the music I digitized from the tapes. So, perhaps when I digitized them, I saved them as wrong film format??

We can't say as this is against the terms of ASC use.

  • Importing Photos into Final Cut Express 4

Please help me, this problem is making me feel like an idiot, I am trying to import digital photographs into FCE but every time I drag it into the timeline its's pixelated and not clear, How do I import the photo so it's not pixelated?

when you have imported the pictures do you Pan,Zoom or adjust the image in anyway? most cameras are not set up for 1920x1080 they are 4000x3000 pixels depending on your camera and you usually have black lines either side where it fits in the video window.
check your setting for the video if it is 1920x1080 then you will will have some background colour to the image where it doesnt fit properly on screen. also check what size image you have taken, some camera boast that they are 15megapixels but the real quality is subsequently less.

  • Dropping an audio track onto a PSD  file imported into Final Cut Express

I created a credits page for my video in Photoshop and then imported it into Final Cut Express (Version 1.0). I then duplicated part of an audio track from another sequence (My friend's father playing the organ), and dropped it onto the Photoshop credits sequence. It displayed and played nicely in Final Cut Express, but did not create an audio track which was visible within Final Cut Express. When I exported the sequence as a .mov file and then imported that into iDVD, it also displayed and played correctly in iDVD. But when I burned the DVD, there was no longer any audio with the credits. Any suggestions?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thanks so much for your response. I selected and copied tracks A1 and A2 from one sequence and then pasted them into the credits (Photoshop) sequence. No audio tracks appeared in the Photoshop sequence, but we could hear the audio when we played the Photoshop sequence.
There was video associated with the original organ track, and we did not lock off the video when we dropped it into the Timeline, although there didn't seem to be any problem with the video. We did not Mixdown the audio either, although no audio tracks were displayed in the Photoshop sequence. I will try both of those things and see if it makes a difference. Thanks again.

  • Imovie 06 & Final cut express

I have iMovie 06 and i am trying to import projects into Final cut express but i am having trouble, need help??

    Hi
There are no 100% way to do this.
If You want Your Timeline with edits (transitions etc) to come over to FCE in a
    still editable version.
    • Not possibly - transition, text- tools are to different
If You want Your TimeLine movie over and accept that spelling errors etc. if fixed
    and can't be altered.
    • Best way is to connect Camera and insert a new miniDV tape and Copy to Camera
Use this and You'll get best quality possibly
To open the iMovie project and drag material over to FCE will partly work but
    1. unedited raw material
    2. Audio doesn't work the same way but needs to in FCE be rendered (every time anything
    changes very irritating)
    My penny to this

  • Correct way of importing an iMovie 6 movie into Final Cut Express?

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Any correct way to import an iMovie 6 HD movie into Final Cut Express for further editing?
    I tried.
    1. I Exported the iMovie, at Full Quality and it made a Quicktime version of that movie.
    2. I then Imported this Quicktime version into Final Cut Express.
    3. The audio was smooth, but at regular intervals, the video freezes for a second (and then moves on).
    4. The movie plays smoothly back in its original iMovie incarnation and in its Quicktime incarnation. Only in Final Cut Express is there this intermittent freezing. Stop and start.
    5. I have Final Cut Express 3.5.1 and iMovie 6 HD.
    Thank you,
    - Ross

"Full Quality" QuickTime export from iMovie gives you a DV stream which will need rendering in FCE. Rather than "Full Quality," choose "Expert Settings," and then the following:
    Video
    DV-DVCPRO - NTSC (assuming you're in USA)
    Sound
    48kHz
    16-bit

  • Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Hi, Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Absolutely.  Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion).  Make sure you check the Self-Contained box.  The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added.  Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

  • Importing video files into final cut express

I am a pro tools engineer and have just dove into final cut express 4.0 to do some simple video editing.I have a cannon camera with a sd card.I archived the video to a hard drive so I could free up the card.I can not find a single piece of evidence that explains how I can import those files from my hard drive.Everything that is mentioned is comming from a camera.I also tried by the book importing a Imovie to start simple. No luck.It shows up in the directory but there is no video.Needless to say I am lost!!!!

If you still have the original video on the memory card, put it back in the camcorder. (Don't try to copy it back from your Mac to the card, however.) Connect the camcorder to your Mac via USB and try capturing the video via FCE's Log & Transfer function.
In most cases when people merely copy video files from a camcorder's memory stick or hard drive (usually AVCHD video) to the Mac desktop or a folder, they don't copy the full directory structure on the card, which is essential. Is that what you did when you 'archived' the video? Can you provide more specific info?

  • How to Encoding MPEG Movie to be able to import into Final Cut Express

I have MPEG Movie video clips that were sent to me. Title dvdMovie1chapter26.mpg (21.6MB) given to me from a PC taken on dvd video camera and compiled on CD disk. I would like to edit in Final Cut Express 4.0. I can not import in present form. Have used HandBrake and Toast 8 to encode. Divx and AVI to grainy. Have tried to make QuickTime Movie but 21.6 MB file went to 115.6 GB. Not sure how to set QuickTime options (Formats-Audio-Video Setting) in Toast 8 to encode with good quality this file so I can import into Final Cut Express. I will not have enough disk space to do all the video clips at 110 GBs or more per file. When I drag this file into Toast 8 with DVD-Video selected the file come into Toast as a Video-MPEG-2 720x480 29.97fps and Audio- Dolby Digital, Stereo 48000Hz File. Any Ideas?

How long is the movie? DV is 3.6MB/second. Handbrake is no good for this. I don't know if Toast will do it, but you can try MPEG Streamclip. You want to export to QuickTime using the DV NTSC codec at frame size of 720x480 and 29.97fps.
