Bizzarre issue with phono cable

Hi guys,
lately, when using my Mac Mini, i have a phono extension cable linked to a pair of standard Apple earbuds at the other end. When i listen to music or video through these earphones with this set up, I get background music going on in the earphones. When nothing is playing and there is no sound coming from the mini, you can still hear a faint sound of music and a bit of chatter. Im not sure, but it sounds like im picking up radio stations?!
Any ideas?

You are picking up radio stations. The extension lead is acting as an antenna. You may want to try a different high quality cable.

  • 42SL417 Connection or Compatibility Issue with Explorer Cable Box 8642HDC

I have the TV listed above and recently switched to Brighthouse cable.  Intermittently my TV loses the connection to the cable box and the input information (1080i, 720p, etc) comes up across the top of the TV and the picture resets.  I had the cable guy out and he said that there was a compatibility issue between the TV and the cable box.  I didn't get all the information since he talked to my wife, I was at work.  I don't believe that this is the issue, but wanted to check to see if this was a known problem or if anyone has had a similar experience.  My firmware is 2.2.2, which I believe is the most current.  Any thoughts or ideas?  The best I could get from my wife was that the box was trying to communicate with the TV to maximize resolution and the delay creates the connection problem.  Before I call the cable company back, I wanted to get some opinions.  My thought is that there is a signal problem since the internet had connectivity problems as well.  He changed the cable on the internet connection and said that would fix that, but I can't believe they aren't related.

That is indeed the latest firmware.
You may want to perform a factory reset, as described on page 44 of your user's guide. After the reset, ensure your TV is off and unplug it for a few minutes. All your settings will be reset, so you will have to set up the TV again.
You might also want to try disabling CEC (page 39) or auto aspect ratio feature (page 47).
I don't know for sure that any of this will help, but these are your best bets. Unfortunately, if none of this helps, I'm out of ideas.

  • Strange mac mini sound issue with HDMI cable

I connected my mac mini to my Panasonic 44 inch HDTV with a DVI to HDMI adapter. I didin't get sound through the cable like i expected. Then I connected a 3mm to RCA jacks adapter to the analog HDMI port on the TV and still no sound. Strangely, when i switched resolutions from 1920 X 1080 to 1200 X 720 the sound started working through the audio ports. It works on every resolution except 1920 X 1080. Any ideas why this is so? Or how to fix it?

First off, the DVI standard makes no provision for carrying sound. That is why you didn't hear any sound when making a DVI-to-HDMI connection from your mini to your TV through the adapter. I am assuming there must be a setting on your TV that is snuffing the sound input from the mini rather than the mini not outputing sound at 1920x1080. This would be easy to prove. Just pull the audio minijack connector from the mini's sound out and I'm guessing you will hear sound coming from the mini's speaker.
Is it possible that, on your TV set, you have associated 1920x1080 with an expectation of HDMI input? Maybe the TV is expecting to find digital audio over the HDMI input and somehow that association is only with that one resolution. Then when you drop resolutions it is looking for sound over the analog port instead of over the HDMI port. I'm just guessing here, but it's something you can check.

  • Issues with Cox Cable and mail server?

I need an accurate port to send mail. I have never been able to use my mac mail (send or receive) and my cox mail (worked for both at one point) on entourage (cox) my outgoing mail does not work, however, it will receive mail? I am using the latest version of Leopard and I disabled my firewall? Cox wouldn't help me they said to just contact apple? I have the correct pop server (pop.east.cox.net) and SMTP server (smtp.east.cox.net). This is really bothering me so if someone could help I would appreciate it. I currently have my mail set on port 110 for both outgoing and incoming.

  • Does anyone else have an issue with lightning bolt cables prematurely wearing out?

Between me, my wife and my sister in law I have bought 3 iPhone 5's and two of the cables is starting to wear out and the third one is worn out already. Is there a known issue with these cables that causes them to wear out prematurely? We bought two of the phones at launch and one in January. The one we bought in January is the one that wore out first and the launch ones are starting to go bad. We don't use the cables in a way that would cause them to wear faster than usual, for the most part the chargers sit by our night stand waiting to be used at night. My cable is the one that travels the most and is probably in the best condition. Is anyone else having this issue. Is this covered by the warranty?

The cables have either the host iPhone warranty or if purchased separately have a similar 12 months warranty

  • Notebook screen issues with green stains

    Hello:
    I currently own an
    HP G62-355DX Notebook PC
    [Personal Information Removed]
    P/N: XH068UA#ABA
    running Windows 7 64-bit
All of sudden (not gradually) green "stains" appeared on my notebook's screen as 3 circles one around the other, sort of like a "bulls-eye" and when I try to run a program in full-screen mode the screen goes bezerk and nothing is readable. I thought it was an issue with the cable connecting the screen to the main-board but I've been told the issues would be different.
These green "stains" or pixels affect any program running or the screen itself, even the Windows 7 starting screen and the HP logo when the notebook is turned on by making the letters on the bottom-left corner unreadable.
After contacting HP at Peru, where I currently reside, I was told the model was not sold here and that I had to contact US support. They said that it could be an issue with the screen itself that could require maintenance at an HP office. And also told me that it was unlikely for remote support to be able to fix the issue.
It is still not over a year before I got the notebook so I'm guessing the warranty is still available.
Would I be required to e-mail the computer back to headquarters in hopes of it being repaired? Is it possible that it could be dealt with at your offices at Peru (I will still be residing here for quite some time).

    Axel,
I'm afraid a new SSD won't be different from your bad USB stick. I had similar issues over USB with both a (no-brand) stick and TWO 64gb Kingston SSDNow's (running Kubuntu 12.04 with Kernel 3.11, ia_64): it all runs exceptionally well (wanna know how it feels like booting in 5 sec?) for a few days - then suddenly you find yourself facing that dreaded (initramfs) prompt. You ask yourself: why? Did I upgrade grub lately? Did I upgrade the Kernel? I don't recall so. Ok, let's fix this... insert favorite live cd, boot, fsck...what???? THOUSANDS of errors??? Hundreds of files and directories corrupted, and the system is unusable - Reinstall everything from scratch onto another drive.
Rinse and repeat: did this 3 times. Then I found this analysis:
    http://lkcl.net/reports/ssd_analysis.html
I also suspect USB power interrupts more abruptly than SATA power, at shutdown - basically aggravating any power interruption damages. So now I'm going to:
    - buy an Intel S3500!
    - add commit=1 to my mount options in /etc/fstab
    - edit shutdown procedure to add a 5-10 sec pause after unmounting drives.
    Just my two cents.

  • Can I configure a wireless home network with two cable routers (both with separate connections to the same cable company)?  Issue is poor signal strength even with multiple Airport Expresses added to the network.

I have a wireless home network consisting of a time capsule, two airport expresses and a cable modem.  Even with this configuration I get a very weak signal in much of be condo - the walls, etc. are solid concrete. I want to see if I can add another separately connected cable modem and connect one of the existing airport express to it by Ethernet cable.  If so, this would give me two wired hubs and greatly improve signal strength. I do not know if this configuration will in fact work or if I will just wind up with two, separate and unrelateable networks.  Unfortunately, there is no way to run any additional Ethernet cable and I doubt simply adding more Airport Express will help. Thanks.

Try Ethernet over Power adapters.. these are very popular for your kind of environment.. being able to make non-wireless link to another area where you can setup a wireless access point.
Airport Express are not great for wireless power.. if you really have issues with wireless strength in a bad environment apple stuff is not the way to go.
    The comparison chart here.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/58-2_4-ghz-dn?see=P_F
This is their worst test location you can also see averages.. the latest airport extreme.. is there a long way down.. and that is a much better wireless device than Airport Express.
The Ubiquiti power AP is small cheap and designed for precisely this duty.. useless in an apple wireless network.. you will need to run ethernet or EOP adapters back to the main router.. but if the normal omni directional antennas don't provide enough signal you can get directional ones.. I suspect you can cover your whole apartment with a pair of these and high gain directional antenna.

  • Time Warner Cable wideband broadband slowness issues with Motorola sbg6580 router

I recently purchased Time Warner Wideband broadband cable for Internet service. 50 Megabit down and 5 Megabit up. When I run the speedtests, I can see the full speed measure, but I stil see issues with browsing and getting connected to VPN.
I had Time Warner Cable come out and replace the router. I still had the same issues after the replacement of the SBG6580 router. There are no updates to the firmware on this router.
I consistently see slow web page loads and problems while on VPN. I found posts on the web saying that this router's firewall was not compatible with Apple's computer products. Even with this firewall turned off inside the router, I still had the same slowness and misc issues.
I finally just changed the router into a gateway using the Rg Passthrough (which automatically turned off the NATP). I added the Time Capsule's MAC ID to the bypass section on the Router. I set up my Time Capsule to act as the main router with a cable running from the Motorola router to the Time Capsule WAN port.
The web pages and VPN are extremely faster. So the root cause is with the Motorola SBG6580 router obviously. I always got the full speed on the Speedtest.net web site, but now everything works fine with this change.

Dude.  You are awesome! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad you posted this solution.  The fact that you took the time to post even AFTER you figured out a solution shows how thoughtful you are as an individual.
Its amazing to me that someone would comment adversely becuase they feel its in the wrong forum.  If it affected their life as it does mine then they would get it.  Amazing how people cant see past themselves.  Who cares what forum its in if its informative? Worse case just move it to a different forum.  We need more people like you and less like them in the world.
Thanks Im gonna try the solution right now!

  • Static on my line - issue with cable in my neighbor's yard

After a bad rainstorm in January I started to get extremely bad static on my line and it was unusable.  I contacted Verizon to schedule a repair.  A week and a half later the technician came out, did some work and appeared to fix the problem.  A day later it rained and the problem returned.  Another repair request.  Another week and a half.  This time, the repair person called me and said that there was some issue with water getting into the line.  He thought the problem was in my neighbor's yard, but he was having an issue getting into the yard.  I'm not sure why as she is home all day during the weekdays.  He also mentioned that he made some sort of repair with a circuit in the office.  Again, the problem "seemed" to be fixed but soon returned.
What else can I do to get this resolved?

Rain and older copper telephone service have always been an issue with one another, so it might be an especially hard problem to fix once and for all.   If you want to do "your due diligence" then double check with your neighbor as to when a good day and time would be where the technician could go in their yard.  Get their number for contact, and when you file another report make sure to give them both your numbers, and let them know the neighbor is giving access and right of way to Verizon to do the repair.   If it's FIOS then it would be unusual that the problem is outside (not impossible) but real unusual.  SO if FiOS is in your neck of the woods, you may want to just upgrade, it will likely fix your problem if it's really outside in the yards and the streets.
Also - when the static comes back, MAKE SURE it's coming from the street.  It most likely is, but go ahead and make sure.  Take your phone to where your outside Verizon box is located, open it up and plug it in (standard telephone test jacks are inside the Verizon box, they sometimes call it a NID)
If you get static even when plugged in at that box, then yes it's an outside problem that they need to fix.
If it's clear when you plug in at that box, then they don't need outside access, the trouble is inside your house.
    Hope it helps.

  • Routing Issue with 3550 Switch

I am having an issue with routing with one of my Cisco 3550 switches.  I know the 3550s are EoL but some of us have to work with what we have.
I am using a 3550 on either side of a Layer 2 link.  The Layer 2 link is 2 Extreme Summit X-440 switches with Microwave between the switches.  I have a VLAN configured on both switches and tagged on the ports connected to the Microwave.  The 3550 switch on each end is configured for IP routing but I cannot pass traffic between the switches.  If I unplug the switch on the local end and plug in a laptop, I can ping the switch on the remote end and access devices at the remote end.
I know this should work because I am doing the same thing over another Microwave link and Layer 2 link using another 3550 and a HP ProCurve at the remote end.
Here are the configs for each 3550:

Ideas?  Anything stand out as grossly wrong?  I have worked on this for 2 days and am at a loss.
    Thanks
    Jamey

Sorry for the delay in replying.  Other items at the office took priority over this project.  I tried that and no change.  I pulled the switch from the remote site and took it back to the local end and connected the switches with a crossover cable and everything works fine.  I have pretty much determined that it is an issue with the config in one of the Extreme switches.  The config in those look pretty normal but there are a few things I am unsure of.  Guess I'll see if there is a similar site for Extreme gear.
    Thanks

  • Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet

Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet. The 2wire will keep resetting. When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.

  • Cisco 3650 Issue with 1231 AP

    hi all,
i've got an issue with a new cisco 3650 48 port wherein older AP 1231 keeps on disconnecting.
the connection is just a simple trunk.
    #sh run int g1/0/47
    Building configuration...
    Current configuration : 62 bytes
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/47
     switchport mode trunk
    end
    1231 is working fine on a 3560.
could someone advice if anything else need to do on 3650?

    pre,
i don't think it's a cable issue. correction on the working AP, it's supposed to be a AIR-SAP1602E.
this AP is working on the 3650.
i've searched and i think the AIR-AP1231 isn't supported on this switch platform.

this new switch isn't friendly. first, i had the issue with PVLAN and now this :(
