Black (and white, and purple) boxes around application buttons[SOLVED]

I've recently had issues with my Intel graphics chipset (i915) ignoring the alpha channel of application buttons, either rendering the backgrounds for them as black, white, or occasionally purple, depending on (I assume) what the RGB channels are set to. the effect is purely cosmetic, but very irritating.
I blame something in the Intel graphics software stack, as when using the ATI card in my laptop (switchable graphics ftw), the problem goes away.
I'm using xmonad with the axiomd gtk2 theme. Screenshot of the strange behavior
Edit: The same behavior does not happen in qt apps.
Edit #2: If I switch to using xfce4 instead of xmonad, the problem also disappears.
Edit #3: Apparently, having DISPLAY=0:0 causes the intel chipset drivers to ignore the transparency, but not radeon. I removed said line from my xinitrc and my icons have returned to normal.

How do I get the color of the address, in the address box, to be all black on white, and not part of it to be gray on white, and part to be black on white?

Right now, the address line in my address box, at the top of the page, begins "https://support", all in light gray, followed by "mozilla.com", in black, followed by "/en-US/questions/new?product=.......etc.", all in light gray on a white backround, so it is almost unreadable. You can set the pref browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled to false on the about:config page.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website. 
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page. 
*Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
*Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
*Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

Make the purple box around text and icon of a button go away?

I have noticed that the first button of a group (or the last one pressed) displays a purple box around the text and/or the icon of a button. I don't want this. How do I get rid of it?

Have you tried setting the colour that you want manually? Or perhaps setting the setOpaque() method with false?
Not entirely sure what you mean...what look and feel are you using? Is it the Metal LAF or something else?

How can I turn a picture black and white and keep some objects in color?

I have seen some pictures that are black and white, and a few objects (flowers, dresses, hair bows, etc) were in their original color. I was told you could do it with Photoshop, but I cannot figure out how. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest way to do this (and there are lots of ways) is to create a hue/saturation adjustment layer above your base image. In the dialogue box, push the saturation slider all the way to the left. This will make what you see monochrome. Now select a brush and click on the layer mask next to the layer you just created. When you paint on the mask in black, you will block the desaturation effect of the layer and reveal the original color on the layer below. Paint in white to reverse this effect.

Why when i convert to black and white and change, contrast, exposure etc and get it right in preview i open it and its brighter and looks different to the preview?

The images also look different in preview and when i upload them to adobe Revel but when i put them back in photoshop they look Ok.

I convert, in raw to black and white and add sharpness and clarity theirs and a few other options Temp etc if need be. Then i open them into photo shop as black and white. There i place around with the exposure setting but as you do it you have the preview button clicked so you see what the finished photo will look like. When i hit change normally the photo changes and looks like it was in the preview.But now with out changing any settings in photoshop, as i change the photo the preview is different when i click ok to make the changes. This comes and goes in photoshop and its getting a bit frustrating as i do a lot of black and white photos and have been doing for years but i am having this problem over the last 6 months.
No i haven't changed colour settings i have photoshop on the preset settings.
'Preview" when you are changing contrast etc their is the preview option so it shows in photoshop what the changes will be. But what i see when i am changing it is different when i open it. make be a point brighter or not as contrasty as i see it as i am changing the settings.

It flickers/fades to black and white, the video lags on ocassion, and the image moves u and down constantly. i own a sony trintiron CRTV and it is not the tv because the tv does not do this on other inputs. Is this an SD TV set? Or does it have HD capability? How is it connected???
If it is an HDTV and you are using component connections, I suspect you need to verify the X1 box is outputting the correct resolution. Using the Comcast remote press EXIT EXIT EXIT 480. If that works and you know for sure you have an HD capable TV then press EXIT EXIT EXIT 1080

How do I make one part of a picture black and white and rest color?

I am working on new campaign for Vi-spring orange county. I need to take a photograph of a woman with a bare back sitting on a mattress and make part of the picture in black and white and the other part in color. I then need to insert an outline of a spine on top in a bright color. I would really appreciate some help on how to start.

I think what we need is a little more information.
When you say you want to make part of the image black and white, do you want to make certain areas of the image black and white or just do away with certain colors in the photo. You can do a selective color and get rid of all but one color ie. A red rose in a green field, take out all the green in the image and the red in the rose is the only thing that has color. Or you can take out one color and leave the rest of the colors in, so basically the oppsite of what I just explained.
If you want certain sections of a image black and white ie. a room with a bed in it make the whole room black and white and keep the bed in color...you need to look into masking.
If you want to do masking I can find you a tutorial for it, but I need to know if i'm on the right track.

Go to Settings>General>Accessibility and turn of either Invert Colors (iOS 6) or or White on Black (earlier iOSs).

As you can see, the chord colors on that cable are red, green, and white. The places where the chords go in on my DVD player are yellow, red, and white. As you can tell, they don't go up. I connected them so the audio works fine, but the movie shows up ONLY in black and white, and the screen is split right down the middle. On my iPod, the 'Video Setting' do not fix this. I also have the iPod Classic 80 GB, for reference.

I am new at this and I just installed the Premiere Pro CS6 and I got it working, yay!! I imported a clip and in the preview it looks fine but when I place it in the sequence and look at it it becomes black and white and is upside down. How do I fix that?? (I´m not sure about the if the terms I use here are the right ones, hope you understand me)

Hello - I have Lightroom 5. I have imported a color photo. I am trying to use the Adjustment Brush to change the background to Black and White and leave a portion of the photo in color. When I begin painting the photo with the Saturation at -100 I don't see any changes to the photo. I push the "O" key and still nothing. I have tried to reset the photo, restarted Lightroom and still nothing. Please help.

Set Flow and Density of the brush to 100
Reduce it where you want the effect to blend.

How to make a movie half black and white and half color

Is there a way to take a full color video and make half of the video black and white and the other half full color? For instance imagine a line down the center of the video, on the left the video is black and white, on the right side it's full color. Taking that concept if an object or person moves from the left to the right side of the screen, thus crossing that invisible line they automatically switch from black and white to color.
Almost like a video mask overlay.. Is that possible in iMovie?

When I do that it only makes a short portion (the top video) color somehow it shortens the clip to 2 seconds, I tried to edit for the full 47 second clip (just a sample to play with) but it keeps going back to 2 seconds for the top video.
Any other ideas? I do have Final Cut Pro as well as Adobe After Effects as well, but I just figured iMovie would be easiest way to do this simple effect...
