Black and white (single-user mode) screen showing up intermittently

Don't know if this is a bug or a feature, but sometimes when I log out or shut down, I'll see a brief glimpse of the computer screen writing the processes in white letters on black, similar to what you would see if you boot into single-user mode. Is this normal? Only lasts a second or two.
Thanks.

  • Cisco TANDBERG Edge 95MXP Black and White display Presentation mode

    Hello, was wondering if anyone would know why our Cisco TANDBERG Edge 95MXP only seems to work in Black and White display Presentation mode, it is a new problem and we have checked the cables and it seems to be okay. The camera works on the screen in full colour.

    You need to eliminate the monitor, cabling and presentation source first of all, this is quick and easy to do if you have a monitor tester, but if not...have you tried bypassing the Edge 95MXP and connected the presentation source directly into the monitor? Still b/w?
    Tried different presentation source? Still b/w? Try another cable and do it again. Anything else in the circuit, i.e. DA, switcher etc?
    What input are you using on the monitor; HDMI, DVI, VGA? Is it b/w on all inputs? Any converters involved, i.e. HDMI to DVI etc?

    My new iPhone 5 has black and white lines on the screen. It's not been damaged. I've tried turning it off but this does not solve the problem? Please help. I can't find my answer on the Internet.

    By far the most common problem hardware-wise seems to be scuffs on the aluminium. Yours is the first report of a faulty screen I've seen.
    If you use the same Apple ID on both devices it'll sync whatever you want it to - music/apps/photos/messages/etc.
    I've just switched from a Galaxy S3 to iPhone 5 (having already owned an iPad for a while) so I'm in a similar position!

  • Screen resolution at boot time and in single user mode?

    Hello!
    I remember back in 10.3.8 or earlier my Mac booted right away in 1280 by 1024 pixels screen resolution, thus avoiding the video mode change when showing the progress bar.
    I didn't manage to get it back to work this way.
    Reset NVRAM ( a zillion times!) didn't help, nor did setting the screen mode from the admin or root account.
    I'd really like to have it back!
    It's no fun working in single user mode on 640 by 480.
    I know this has been working with the original ATI Rage 128 and with the Radeon 7000 PCI I built in 3 years ago.
    Any ideas?

    Powermac G3 b/w Rev. B   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   RAM: 896 MB

    Not sure if this is related enough, but I just wrestled trying to restore from time machine too, trying to reinstall 10.5.8 after putting a new HD in my MBP, 2006 vintage.
    That took sooooo long to get back to where I was before swapping disks; what did the trick was ordering a free copy of Snow Leopard install disk (free due to Apple trying to push people from idisk to icloud) which was rushed FedEx (yay) and which allowed me to access Time Machine where my ancient original OSX install disk had not.
    And all it took was 2 weeks of cursing!

  • HT4061 I have black and white lines on my screen what is up?

    My screen is displaying black and white lines. How do I fix it?

    Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. If that doesn't fix it, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar as it sounds like you screen has given up.

  • System freezes and restart after user login screen shows up

    The interesting thing is thing is that the same thing happens on the bootcamp partition. Every time I turn on MBA mid 2012, when the login screen shows up, the computer freezes and than turns off. Same problem when I boot into bootcamp partition, the computer turns on, pass through windows logo and after the login screen shows, it turns off.
    ...forgot to mention that it's running osx 10.9
    I figure out that I can log in with Sage Mode. Every time I log in with Safe Mode, the error popup message shows up saying about the error and its log. There is the log:

    Any ideas?

    Problem solved... Figure out that in Safe Mode, the bootcamp partition is unmounted. So I thought that it could be the problem, when the login screen shows up, I guess the system was trying to mount the bootcamp partition and for some reason the computer was restarting. That's why the computer was turning off when I was trying to log in into Bootcamp partition also. So I wiped my bootcamp partition and resized the OSX partition. Now I can succesfully log in my user with out a problem

  • Determine if layer is black and white (or desaturated)

    Is there a way to programmatically determine if a layer of a PSD is black and white?

    What mode are the images you want to check in anyway? CMYK, RGB …?
    I suppose there are several options to achieve it.
    • Iterating through the pixels with a ColorSampler would take too long for larger images, I guess.
    • The Histogram would be unreliable because the numbers for each value in each Channel could accidentally be identical.
    • But hiding other Layers, duplicating the image (mergeLayersOnly), changing to L*a*b, reading the a- and b-Histograms, closing the copy, un-hiding other Layers should work.
    If the a- and b-Histograms are all bunched up around 127 (some tolerance could be set) it should be a desaturated Layer.
    // check layer for 0 saturation;
    // 2011, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop;
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    hideShowOthers ();
    // duplicate;
    var theCopy = myDocument.duplicate("copy", true);
    theCopy.changeMode(ChangeMode.LAB);
    // get histograms;
    var theA = theCopy.channels[1].histogram;
    var theB = theCopy.channels[2].histogram;
    // check histrograms;
    var check = true;
    check = checkHistogram (theA, check, 0);
    check = checkHistogram (theB, check, 0);
    // close;
    theCopy.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    // re-show;
    hideShowOthers ();
    if (check == true) {alert ("layer is desaturated")}
    else{alert ("layer contains color")}

  • ASAP Single User Mode Problem

    Hello,
    When I try and enter single user mode I see scrolling words and then it pauses for about 5 seconds then some more scrolling then exits itself before I can type anything.
    On my other mac it stops scrolling and lets me type.
    Does anybody have any solutions?
    Removing Ram is not an option and I have cleared the PRAM

    If any peripherals are connected when you try to boot in single-user mode, disconnect them and try again. Otherwise do as follows.
    Back up all data.
    Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Mac not booting normally after running '/sbin/fsck -fy' in Single user mode

    HI, I tried to log in to single user mode and run the '/sbin/fsck -fy' command. This command failed. So I rebooted my Macbook pro by 'reboot' command. On bootup I hear the chime shoud and can see the Mac Symbol but never reach the login prompt. The round circle keeps rotating over the gray screen and nothing happens.
    Then I again hard rebooted mac book and entered single user mode. I ran again '/sbin/fsck -fy' many times and after many attempts the command stuck and never returned.
    Then I tried using the recovery method to reinstall MAC OS X. It asked me to choose the Harddrive where to install MAC OSX. But the option of "macintosh HD" was disabled and message was " hard drive locked".
    Please help me how to boot my MAC normally :'(

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    Boot in Recovery again and open Disk Utility. Then, choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and repair the hard drive. If it is repaired, restart and OS X should start correctly. If not, you will probably have to format the hard disk.
    You only have to use that command when you have problems with the Mac OS X volume filesystem that they couldn't be repaired with Disk Utility, and as this command got stuck, probably damaged the OS X volume filesystem

  • Black and white printing with a mac

    I recently switched from a Dell Windows PC to an iMac with OS 10.9. I am using my old HP 6500e 710a Officejet All in One.
    I typically print most of my documents in black and white which was available on the Windows 7 driver version.
    On the iMac OS 10.9 driver version, I can only print in black and white in "draft" mode.
    Based on another posting I saw on this forum, the drop down menu for another HP printer (I think 8300) had the feature to select B&W printing in any quality. Also, it had "grayscale" selectable.
    I appears that my driver version V2.4.0-2 does not have the full compliment of options. HP needs to update this OS 10.9 driver.
    Can anyone HELP!
    This question was solved.

    happytohelp01,
    I received a response from HP Support pointing me to the following Apple software driver on the Apple support website; HP Printer Drivers v.2.16.1 for OS X.
    It was at "http://support.apple.com/kb/dl907".   Once I loaded it, I was given the following instructions:
    Step 3: Change print settings
    1. Open the document that you want to print
    2. Click on File  and then Print
    3. Make sure the correct printer name is selected.
    4. Below the Orientation option, there is drop-down menu. Select Paper type/Quality (Refer to the attached screenshot)
    5. Click on Color Options.
    6. Select Greyscale under Color
    7. Click on Print.
    You can create a Preset using the below steps so that you do not have to change the settings every time you print.
    1. Click on Presets menu
    2. Click on Create new Preset
    3. Assign a preset name
    4. Confirm to create the preset.
    Next time, you can select this preset name to get the settings that you have made.
    This allowed me to print in B&W at Normal quality.

  • Exporting to PDF: Text as black and white only possible?

    Hi!
    I do have a large document where 30% of the pages do use colors 70% plain text. I'm asked by the printing company to export the text only pages as plain black and white PDF's. They showed me the function on Windows and Word. Is it possible with pages, too?
    If it helps, I do have the Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium (with Acrobat).
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Yes it is but you have to fix your text so that it is styled to black only.
    Click in the text and go command a (select all):
    Menu > View > Colors
    Click on the sliders icon at the top of the pallette and choose Grey Scale Slider and then the 0% swatch.
    Resave any styles you have used and fix any text or objects that are not part of your main text.
    You can also open your pdf file in the ColorSync Utility found in your Utilities folder inside your Applications folder and apply Filters > Black & White

  • Black and white squares

    Hello everyone,
    I was on my mac browsing the internet and all of a sudden BIG black and white squares on my screen and this very loud noise so i had to force the computer to shutdown. can anyone please shed some light on this, is there something wrong with my mac its the first time its happened.

    Yep. That's what they call "artifacts." In fact, it seems a textboox case of an overheating GPU:
    "A common form of serious GPU artifact is a checkerboard pattern which covers the entire screen." (http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html)
    Do you hear the fan running? Try downloading an app like smcFanControl to speed up the fan. The noise you heard the first time could have been the fan going full speed OR the fan breaking --which in turn could have caused the logic board to overheat.
    Placing the mini on a metal surface or on a laptop stand --preferably one with a fan-- may also help, at least for now.
    Ideally, though, you should take the mini to the Genius Bar or an Apple certified technician.

  • Booting in Single User Mode

    Hello All,
    Just want to prepare ahead of time for possible server-down cases where a drive fails etc. What I want to do is find out a bit more about how the boot sequence is completed.
    If for example the primary boot partition was to become corrupted, is there an easy way to boot from the cdrom and enter single-user mode? From there I could mount a drive, bring up the nic, and transfer files etc, as needed.
    Normally with the bootprom on Sun hardware the stop-a then boot -s cdrom would work. What's the comparable command for Solaris 8 x86?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Cutting for black and white photo.

    I am VERY new to this elements 6.0 . I am trying to convert color photo of a face but want to keep the eyes blue but can replace only one eye in the photo. Can anyone help me!!!!! Please!!!

    Christa,
    It's not really clear what you are trying to do. I'm guessing you want to convert a color picture to black & white but retain the color eyes. If so, here is one way:
    1. Add a Hue/Saturation layer and move the Saturation slider all the way left to remove all color.
    2. Set the foreground/background colors to their default black & white values.
    3. Zoom way in to enlarge the eyes. With the Brush tool paint with black to reveal the color, with white to remove excess color. Type "x" to toggle between the black and white.

    If that is not what you want to do, please explain further and what steps you took that you could do only one eye.
