Black and White Tips

Hey,
I'm going to be shooting a short film with my Canon HV20 in 24p/ black and white. I've gathered that it's best to shoot in color and then apply black and white filter in post. I've also gathered that lighting is crucial.
1. Does anyone know of some good literature or video that educates on the art of lighting HDV for black and white?
2. Is there something else that I should be prepared for?
thanks,
Trey

If your final product is going to be B&W then I suggest you shoot B&W.
Lighting for B&W is different than Color for starters. Not sure if your HV20 can do this or not, but if it can go for it.
Here is one person's approach for a stylized B&W shoot for HDV

Under the Effects-Lumetri Looks-Desaturation choose a B and W effect. Then add the luma corrector from the Video effects-colour correction section. Adjust the brightness and contrast to get the effect you want.

Keep the temperature down, usually by boosting the lowest default fan speed to help.
Also FBDIMMs on Amazon I have run at 59*C versus the 72*C+ of prior modules so adding less heat into the system.
There are kits you can modify the card's fan and add copper heat sink pipes. You may be fine and not have to buy a new card and continue with the 8800GT.
The X1900 was a huge problem with dust and therefore with heat and making the fans work harder - but never able to cool the interior, so the card had to be removed and dust inside the card's chamber 3-4X per year.
My Mac Pro 1,1 even without the X1900 would warm up the area during winter after 3-4 hours of use - the exhaust on these is very hot. So monitor the temps and fans and I would  install SmcFanControl - I have always had it since 2007 to keep the fans default at 800-900 rpm along with Hardware Monitor (or use another) to monitor all the system sensors.

  • How do I print in black and white with HP Deskjet 5740?

I have just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. With Snow Leopard, and an HP Deskjet 5740 printer, I could choose to print in draft or best quality, black and white only or in full colour, and had various other options. Now I am not offered these options in the print dialogue: the printer always prints in colour and I cannot choose whether to print in best or draft quality. I would be grateful for any tips on how to recover printing options. Many thanks.

I have a different HP, but see if this helps:
You can also select Greyscale, and even only the Black Cartridge:
(you can save it as a Preset)

  • Solution for printing black and white in acrobat

    Hi,
    Here was the problem :
I was trying to convert my colored pdf file to black and white but nothing was working. Others were having the same problem too (such as http://adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5454d ) and the topic was already archived so I could not post the reply.
I tried also to print as black (as it can be found at the bottom of the print button in the acrobat 8 ) but it just made my whole document black.
    So, the solution
TO convert your color pdf to black and white and save it as black and white pdf do the following (I am using acrobat 8 )
    1. GO to file > Print
    2. Choose pdf from the printer
    3. At the very bottom there is a button called "advanced" in the middle of "printing tips" and "summarize comments". Click the advanced button
    4. In the advanced option, under output - there is an option called color and the next to it is written "composite"
    Change it to "composite gray"
    5. press ok and it brings you back to the main printing window
    6. Now if you press ok it prints your file to black and white.
Hope this will help some people.

My biggest challenge is printing pdfs of schematic diagrams where color is used to signify "layers" in a drawing.  Hardest one to read is "yellow" on white for lines or text.
I found a solution, however it may apply to my specific printer only (Sharp MX-2300N).
From  the print dialog, select "Properties" next to the printer name.
From the priter properties popup, select the "Main" tab, and check "Black and White print".
From the "Color" tab, make these selections:
Color Mode:  Select "black and white"
Color Adjustment:  Check "Text to Black"
Color Adjustment:  Check "Vector to Black"
Other printers may have similar configuration options.

  • Printing in Black And White

I'm using iPhoto '08 7.1.5 and trying to print a color photo that I made black and white and it only prints the blackest blacks and the whitest whites, but nothing in between, giving me a partially printed picture. Is there some kind of setting that will allow me to print the entire picture in black and white? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Check the various printer setting panes from the menu in the print window for one that has a grayscale checkbox or setting. . For my Canon the grayscale box is located in the Quality and Media section. For my Epson printer it's in the Print Settings section under the Color menu. Select it and try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • How to get black and white effect in photos

    Hi There,
I have always wondered how people get to add black and white effect in a photograph. Anyone with tips and/or videos to show how this is done?
    Thanks in advance.

Start with a raw image for detail, you can adjust anything here especially shadow and highlight detail, the second button). You can then use the adjustment layer of black & white. Start with auto, but how pull the sliders around is different for each phot. If you still want to enhance certain areas I suggest color balance (under the black and white) for shad, mids, highlights.

  • Mixing Black and White effects and color to one picture in iPhoto

is there any way to combine these to effects to have part of a picture black and white and another part color?

No, not with iPhoto. You'll need a 3rd party application like Photoshop Elements which can select areas in a photo and desaturate it, leaving the rest in color like this. This is another example of what you can do with it.
    Do you Twango?

  • Black and white photo printed sort of pink...what's wrong

I  have a HP 7520 Photosmart all in one printer.  Has been printing fine until today. I was trying to print an old black and white photo. It came out sort of pink.  Have tried all the tips I could find. What is wrong?

The black ink is pigmented and not compatible with photo paper so when printing on photo paper only the color and photo inks are used. A pinkish result would indicate that cyan is not printing properly.  The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the issue.

  • How can I create a black and white image similar to what I see in the "Replace Color" tool?

Hi all, I'm just wondering how I can create a black and white image similar to what I see in the preview window of the "Replace Color" tool. See attached screenshot for clarification -- I need the grass to be black while the soil is white or vice versa. Any tips?

One way is to use Select>Color Range
Make a new Color Fill Layer>White
    (Layer>New Fill Layer>Solid Color)
Put a new color fill layer below>black
Just invert the layer mask on the top fill layer for the opposite effect.

  • B8550 Print Black and White Only

Is there a way to print in Black and White only on my B8550?
    I use a MAC w/ 10.6

    Hi oldstrings,
You can change the print setting to print in grayscale(using black ink only).
I have extracted out the printer setting tips for both windows and mac.
Alternatively, you may refer to the below user guide reference link.

  • Can't import Scanned Black and white photos to iphoto

Issue : When importing a *Scanned, Black and white, jPG* image to iphoto get an error message
Error message stats " The following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)
Solution: Im not an expert but I think it's the scanner driver and the color profile it uses. Changing the color setting to RGB or color or changing the file type from JPG to Tiff may help. If you have already scanned the photos or if changing the settings do not help the follow the instructions to fix the photos.
    1. Locate the Remove.app Script
Location is : Macintosh HD - Library folder - Colorsync Folder - Scripts folder- Remove script
    2. Select all of the photos and drag and drop the photos on top of the Remove script. The photos will immediately be ready to import to iphoto and will still be the same location they where dragged from.
Tip: place the photos in a folder on the desktop then select all ( command-A ) the photos with the issue. This may make it easier to drag and drop onto the Remove script

    Gail:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The reason you're getting that black thumbnail and full sized image is that iPhoto does not support the grayscale profile Dot Gain 20% that grayscale scanning embeds in those photos. You're best bet is to scan them as color. They will still look the same but have the RGB color mode and sRGB color profile that iPhoto can support.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. • Black and white to rgb

I have some black and white photos that I scanned that iphoto will not recognize because I believe they are black and white.
Is there any way to convert them to the rgb so iphoto will recognize them?
    Thanks
I tried opening in preview and saving as rgb but that option is not there.
I cant find a save as rgb option anywhere.

Yes. I've created a couple of Automator workflow applications and Applescripts that can convert them to sRGB. The are Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile and Embed sRGB Profile 2. They can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar.
NOTE: You will have to do the conversion of the photos outside of iPhoto and import the converted photos as new photos.

2 - re B&W - not that iPhoto will only wrk with RGB photos so even if they are B&W they need the sRGB profile
3 - to do sophisticated editing (like adding effects - i.e. grain) you need a third party editor - like PhotoShop Elements - iPhoto is a great but pretty much consumer level photo management system
