Black band video import

why does Premiere elements 10 Get Media now give a black band over the top half of the imported video (wmv files and asf files)? I re-installed  - no help. How do I getback to normal?

This is that ANNOUNCEMENT:
ANNOUNCEMENT: Windows Update Causes Half of Display to Be Blacked Out
Hide Details
MicroSoft has issued an Update for Windows, that is causing problems with Displays. The following is from Talbot McInnis, who tracked down this problem, and offers a fix:
"MS bulliten MS13-057.  Specifically, on XP kb2834904 and on windows 7 kb2803821 is causing a problem
For us, it occurs when decoding WMV9 files.  Not all uses of WMV decoding are affected, but I confirmed that when connecting the WMV decode DLL to a sample grabber for RGB32 video, the frames arrive black on top, so that points directly to decoding internals of the WMV Decode dll.
You can uninstall these windows updates to resolve your problem."
There are several threads on the problem that this Update is causing on the PrE and PrPro Forums, so one can get more details. So far, there is not another fix from either MS, or Adobe.
Also, see this Adobe KB Article: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/wmv-files-corrupted-import-or.h tml
Good luck,

In Windows 8.1 Premiere Pro video imported clips shows up black screen in Source & Work space. Everything is updated on my PC. They say it could have been a Windows update? Is anyone else having this problem and found a solution any suggestions.. Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your help. I finally was able to contact someone from Adobe on line.. It took about 1 hour on hold but I finally won the lotto...Lol. Pr.. /Project/Project Settings/General/ I had the (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated (CUDA) and not the (Mercury Playback Engine Software Only) It only took 1 second for Adobe to figure it out...Lol.
Although I have a high rated Nvidia card that did handle the software for some time after a hack, I believe a Windows update may have altered my Premiere Pro CS6 settings.
Video card is Geforce Nvidia GTX 765M non compatible with (Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated (CUDA). Thank Ronin Edits and cvid01

  • Green/Black Band Across Encodes

I'm at the end of my rope here.  I've done so many clean installs over the past week, it's made me sick.  So the problem now, is that certain encodes from Compressor had a green band across about 75% of the screen (like a reverse letterbox).  The top strip above the band was a still image of the video, and below the band was the only video moving.
Anyway, after talking to the Pro Apps team at Apple, they recommended I do another clean install of Snow Leopard, then install all Pro Apps from the discs.  I haven't installed any 3rd party apps or plugins at this point.  I tested it out, and I'm now getting a black band across these encodes instead of green.  It occurs on encodes with frame controls on, or encodes where the sequence frame size is larger than the encode in Compressor.  All of these encodes work fine on my old Mac Pro.
I've tested the video card with TechTool Deluxe as per a suggestion from one of the Pro Apps Team members, and it all looks fine (I do know that it says it's not been tested with Snow Leopard).  I tested my RAM with MemTest, and it was all fine (although it is Crucial RAM, not Apple's).
What else could it be?  I'm calling Apple back tomorrow, but I'd love to hear any suggestions you guys have.
    Thanks,
    Lawrence

Here's the one sample workflow that produced these results:
Exported a Quicktime slideshow from iPhoto using frame size 1920x1080 and the Animation codec
Imported the QT file into FCP by dragging from Finder into the bin
Dragged the clip into a sequence, and said confirmed that FCP should change the sequence settings to match the clip
Ctrl-clicked sequence and chose "Export>Using Compressor"
Dragged DVD 90 Min High Quality setting and clicked "Submit"
    Another workflow as follows:
Opened finder and located a DVCProHD 720p30 file
Imported into FCP using cmd-i and browsing to clip
    Dragged clip into timeline
    Allowed it to change settings
Exported with same settings as above (but this export will only have green band if frame controls are turned on in Compressor)
It should also be noted that I've checked these files on my MBP and my old MP and they work fine.  Same workflow exports without problems.  I talked to Apple again, and they are submitting a log report from my new MP to the engineering team.
But I did also find another post indicating others with 12-Core Mac Pro's are having the same issues.  So the senior Apple Rep advised me that it is not Apple's job to ensure compatibility between new hardware and old software and unless a sales rep specifically advised me that FCS 2 would work with the new Mac Pro, I'm out of luck.
So I'm thinking anyone who's got FCS 2 and is considering a new MP should be warned.

  • Black bands cut off full projection with DVI adapter

I used my DVI adapter for the first time today to connect my MacBook Pro (17") to a projector. I selected video mirroring from my System Preferences and ran a PowerPoint (for Mac) presentation in slide show mode.
The projector displayed the presentation but black bands appeard on my laptop display, which cut off some of the left and right side of the projected PowerPoint presentation.
Anyone know how I get rid of the black bands and get the full image from my laptop display projected?
(FYI, I use PowerPoint instead of Keynote because it's easier for my clients. I know, I know, that's sad.)

How are you actually connected to the TV?  Does it have HDMI?  Most non-widescreen TVs would not.
I would suspect a converter is either not outputting properly, your TV not interpreting the signal properly or you have some form of Zoom setting enabled on the TV.
How does your TV handle widescreen from say cable or terrestrial TV sources ?
Unfortunately AppleTV is not designed to be used with non-widescreen TVs so there's no setting on AppleTV to tweak.

  • How can I get TV shows viewed through Hulu Plus on the Apple TV 3 to show as widescreen with black bands above and below the screen shot instead of chopping off the sides on my non-widescreen TV?

I just bought a new Apple TV 3 today so I can watch shows from Hulu Plus without having to physically plug in separate audio and video cables from my Macbook Air to the TV every time. I have a non-widescreen TV and when I normally watch Hulu Plus on the TV (though Safari on my plugged in Macbook Air as mentioned above), the entire wide screen shot is shown with black bands above and below the sceen shot since I am watching a widescreen program on a non-widescreen TV.
However, I noticed that when I watch the same show through Hulu Plus on my new Apple TV 3, the left and right edges of the shot are chopped off to make the program fill my non-widescreen TV. This bothers me because I would like to see the full shot and not just the chopped off middle portion. This is a real bummber because watching Hulu Plus without having to plug in my laptop is the only reason I bought the Apple TV. Is there anything I can do about this?
    Thanks!
(FYI: I have the very first Macbook Air that is not capable of mirroring)

Thanks for that info! Even in my time answering questions on iMovie Discussion Group, I never had a good understanding of when and how Optimize Movie came into play. I always would import as Optimized and Large Size and figured that was good enough. But knowing you got much, much more flexibility doing it the way you describe gives me a much better understanding of the different routes you can take into the Event Library.

  • Video import from PAL camcorder

I have just bought a Canopus ADVC110 which converts analog video to digital and have it hooked into my Powerbook Pro via a firewire lead.
I have my analog PAL camcorder tied into the canopus and am attempting to import some PAL video but not getting very far.
I fire up iMovie and it does indeed detect the camera but when I create a new project it appears as DV-NTSC and not DV-PAL. I have changed the 'New Project frame rate' preference from 29.97 to 25 but still no good. When I click on Import I get the video/audio but the video is VERY jumpy and in black and white and the audio is totally garbled. As the video is PAL and the project says DV-NTSC this might be the issue? I would have thought that the Canopus would remove any PAL/NTSC issues as it is being converted to digital anyway? I don't know how to change the new project from DV-NTSC to DV-PAL, again I thought switching frame rate to 25 would have done this?
So, can anyone help me get a smooth video import onto the Apple? I dont care what resulting file format is as long as I can import and play it. I don't mind buying a different video application if necessary and do have Toast Titanium if that helps.
    Many thanks,

It sounds like you may not have set the dip switches of the Canopus correctly to PAL.
See page 16 of instruction manual for the canopus ADVC110!
    (I use the same one)

  • How can I color a black and white imported jpeg?

I am new to Illustrator, and have been watching MANY videos, but just cannot seem to figure out how to color the B&W photo I imported into Illustrator CC. Do I need to do something in Photoshop first? Am I missing a step? I was able to trace the image but from there I am lost. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

How can I color a black and white imported jpeg?
In case you don't want to trace it first:
-> it needs to real Greyscale. Not just desaturated RGB
-> Do not save it via Save for Web in Photoshop.

  • Black between video clips

I'm trying to insert black between video clips and can't seem to find the option to do so. I've tried inserting a text in black with a black background, but it just outlines it. I tried inserting a 10 sec 'fade to black' transition, but you can't insert anything into that 10 seconds. The only thing I can think to do is to film in a dark room or with the lens covered and to import that.... does anybody know what I can do? Please help!!
    thanks~

Open the transitions menu (the square icon with 2 triangles to the right of the "T" (type) icon. All menu icons are located just below the right corner of your movie window. The music symbol, camera symbol, etc...
Choose the Fade to Black and drag it between the clips where desired effect should be. You can even double-click the transition once its placed into position and adjust the amount of fade time.
    Hope this helps

  • Movie files embedded in Powerpoint for Mac 2011 play audio, but only show black (no video).

I'm trying to embed a video in a presentation using Powerpoint for Mac 2011.  It successfully imports the video, but when I try to play the video in the slide it only plays the audio and black (no video).  I have tried .mov and .wmv files and neither works.  I have Flip4Mac on the machine which is a MacBook Pro 15", if that makes any difference.  The video in either format plays outside of the Powerpoint presentation and if I send the presentation to another MacBook Pro the video in the slide plays no problem.  Anyone have any ideas other than not using a Microsoft product on a Mac?

I suggest you post your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac products, as it's their software you're having issues with:

  • New Macbook video import problem.

    Hi all,
I have just gone and bought myself a new Macbook Pro and I am very pleased with it. From a video standpoint I plan to use it to import and edit HD video from my Canon HV20. The new Macbook only has a Firewire 800 port and so the cable that I would normally use to connect computer and camcorder will not work as it is 'mini' Firewire to Firewire 400. I am assuming that there is/will be a 'mini' to FW800 cable available, but in the interim I am using a Firewire hub that is connected to the Macbook by a 400-800 cable. And herein lies my problem ! Although iMovie8 detects my HV20, it will not display or play or import any footage from the tape ! It just remains on the blue import screen and although the camcorder is merrily 'playing', no footage is actually making it across to the computer. I think the issue is the Firewire hub part of the connection but I thought it best to garner an opinion from users of this forum. Help !!
    Many thanks in advance, kroguk
    PS
I will also post this on the Macbook forum, so apologies if you see this post twice

Well, I can't find my Belkin FW800-to-4-pin (9-pin-to-4-pin) cable right now ..I'm doing some "tidying up" ..which is always hopeless for finding things afterwards!.. but I DID buy the other day - in the German Mac specialists, erm, can't remember the name - a Sonnet Fast-something (..which I've just put down, and now can't find..) teeny 9-pin-to-6-pin adapter (..so small that I can't find it!..) and I've just tested that with a Sony HC1 HDV camcorder.
    Using the Sonnet adaptor..
..which is mentioned on their website at top-left here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/adapters/index.html ..on a normal 6-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable.. I just connected my camcorder and successfully imported HDV from the Sony.
I tested it twice with iMovie HD 6, in the most adverse conditions: 1; connecting to the 9-pin FW800 socket on a G4 17" laptop (..which is generally too slow to import HDV in real-time..) and 2; looped ("daisy-chained") through the 9-pin FW800 sockets (..one socket from the drive to my Mac, the other socket from the drive to the camcorder..) of an external iOmega FireWire drive connected to my Quad G5 Mac, also with iMovie HD 6. Both imports worked perfectly.
I'm also trying it as I write this - I just found the adapter again! - to import into iMovie '08 on the G5, daisy-chained through the external disc (..the G4 is too old or underpowered to run iMovie '08..) and that works as well ..though I did have to "kick" the program into starting a new Event; at first the camera transport ran, but no video imported, so I just Stopped and re-imported.
I bought this adaptor "on spec", as no previous device or adapter had worked properly for me (..converting between 4-pin on a camcorder and 9-pin on a Mac..) and this is the first to have worked, for me. But I have great faith in Sonnet, as they make the extra S-ATA driver card and other bits and bobs which I put in my floorstander G5, and that all "just works".
Ah; the shop where I bought it is ..hold on a moment.. the "m store" in Munich. (Karsten may know them: when Gravis moved from Lindwurmstrasse to Im Tal, the m store opened up right next door to where Gravis had been before) and they're at Lindwurmstrasse 5a, their phone number - they speak English, too - is 0049 89 24 22 35 24 and their website is ..aaaarggh; they don't seem to have one.
Anyway; the Sonnet SimplyFast FireWire 400-to-800 Adapter works perfectly - for me - on the end of a normal 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable, and importing works flawlessly every way I've tried it ..even daisy-chained through an external drive.
    I can heartily recommend it.
But - as always - "your mileage may vary" ..meaning that it might not work so smoothly for you.

  • I'm having trouble with video imported from my camera memory card.

I'm having trouble with video imported from my camera memory card. The video breaks up and pixelizes when it's directly imported from the memory card. That makes the video useless. Why does this happen? It doesn't do that in any other video editing software. Thanks for the help.

    More info please:
    Type of camera?
Was the card formatted in the camera doing the shooting?
Type of files the camera is set to record?

  • Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive but many are not showing up in Aperture.

Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date.  The files show up on the hard drive with import date not created date, but many of these same files are not showing up in Aperture. Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.

It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier!

  • New Photo/Video Import Lost Due to Power Cut - Any Ideas?

I am using OS X 10.9.1, and iPhoto '08, V7.1.5.  My iMac was in the closing stages of a photo/video import from my iPhone 5 when a power cut occured.  I had thought the photos would already be in the new album that I'd just created because I had just been asked the question Keep or Delete Original Photos (I  responded DELETE).  When I restarted after the power cut, the new iPhoto album contained nothing at all, and 80% of the originals had been deleted off my iPhone.  I have tried looking in the main iPhoto library and Last Import folder with no joy.  Is there anythig else that I can try please?

Quick update to say that I found them!  I convinced myself that when the power cut occured, there's no way that a few GB of media could be instantly deleted, and thus they must be somewhere on the HD.......similar to data getting stored in a TEMP folder on a PC.  I managed to access the main LIBRARY folder via Finder >> GO >> OPTION KEY and then did a search for one of the photo numbers that I knew was missing. Amazingly found it together with all the other 588 missing photos & movies buried in a folder called 26Dec2013_2 (strange considering this happened on 01Jan2014 and all the photos/media were from the period 27Dec to 01Jan).  Note that my earlier search of the entire iPhoto Library package had also proved fruitless. Not sure where that folder was actually residing, but I copied the entire contents to my Desktop and then imported them into iPhoto.  In short, I am so happy!  Lesson learned about the dangers of power cuts, especially living in a city short on energy.  I will not do that again.  Hope this helps someone else sometime in the future. Thanks.
