Black bar running down my screen

Just today the below started happening on my screen:
For absolutely no reason, it was just being used as normal and when I moved slightly it just flickered to this and wont go. The worst thing is my AppleCare ran out about 2 weeks ago , I have an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow but can anyone shed any light on this in the meantime and any hints on how to approach the Genius' etc.?
Thanks in advance
Lindsey

First I'd like to say that there are places that charge a lot less than $300.00 to fix that. You can find some of them on Ebay. I saw one for screen replacement that was  about $130.00.  The easiest way to test that is to have an external monitor to plug in. The macbook has a mini dvi port on the side. So you need a monitor with a mini dvi plug or an adapter from vga to mini dvi. If it's the screen or as I suspect the backlight, with an external monitor you will not have the lines.

Just did latest update and noticed on the reboot a thin black line running down the left hand side of the screen 8cm in apex.

Sounds like a problem with the display. Contact your local Apple Store or AASP and make an appointment to have the display looked at. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

  • Vertical black line running down imac screen

This morning i noticed for the first time (wasn't there yesterday) a thin black vertical line running down my 21' imac screen.
    Any suggestions?

Take a screen shot & view that in Preview, move the Preview window around, if you see 2 black lines it a Video card/VRAM problem, if the line does not move moving the pic around then it's the LCD or cable.

Having an intermittent issue where my iMac blanks out on me. On restarting I get several bands running down the screen with pixels jumping around within the bands, then the white screen of death and nothing... This happens intermittently and usually restarts OK. Happened again three days ago and wouldn't restart for two days (again the bands/pixels etc) but now operating fine? Any ideas whats wrong with my iMac and what the solution may be? Also gets very hot from time to time, particularly if I'm playing music/watching youtube/movies for extended periods. Mac is 3.5 years old, running OS X 10.6.8, processor 3.4 GHz i7 memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3

If you live near an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment to have the computer tested. Supposedly there is no charge for testing. Use 2nd link if not near an Apple Store or aren’t in the US.

  • HP 5button comfort mouse-wired. mouse pointer runs down the screen by itself.

Hi all, I have recently lost control of my mouse. The pointer runs down the screen and I am unable to click accurately on
any buttons etc. I have uninstalled and reinstalled without success. My system is Win 7- 64 bit. I have been told this is a driver problem. If so, how do I fix it? Incidently the mouse works perfectly on my Vista laptop and my XP desktop so the
mouse is not at fault. Any help will be gratefully received.  RegT

  • Squiggly line running down my screen

I've just noticed a random squiggly line* running down the screen on the bottom half center of my iMac (Intel Core i5 27 inch) screen. I don't believe I'd noticed it before, had this iMac for a few months now. It's very light, more noticeable when the screen happens to be dark but it's definitely there. It's not ON the screen, almost seems like its pressed between two plates if the screen were made of two plates. Tried different screen savers and desktops, it's most definetely there. Haven't had this iMac 6 months, am I still under warranty? And what with the squiggly line??? Anyone? Thank You! MG
*imagine a particularly intoxicated snail traveling from point-a to point-b and the line it would leave behind. THATS what it looks like. And no, a nail hasn't been anywhere near my iMac

"Squiggly line"? Only an Apple Tech can tell you. You have a one-year warranty. If you bought Apple Care, you have longer coverage. In any event, call Apple, tell them what you see, and when you bought the computer. It's really a matter for them to resolve.

  • 2008 Pro has flashes of black bar at bottom of screen

I'm getting flash of a black bar the full width of screen and height of dock at the very bottom of the screen.
It flashes quickly twice about every 10 seconds.
I just got the box last night.
    It has an 8800GT card.
Didn't notice it last night, but left in on all night to format a hard drive with multiple passes.
I've rebooted and the condition persists.

Think I have a clue. I have two monitors connected to the 8800GT.
I had the card set to 'mirror mode' and I had my 2nd monitor turned off as I was attempting to clone my main hard drive, no need to burn the electricity.
When I turned on the 2nd monitor, the menu bar appeared 1/4 way down the screen, so the hole screen was pushed down by 1/4 and there was some garbage at the top of the screen.
I took it out of mirror mode with both monitors turned on, and the problem went away (I may have also rebooted).
    Some driver issue with 8800GT.

There is a thin blue line running vertically down my imac screen a little to the right of the centre. It disappeared for a while - i think after I tapped a certain key - but then re-appeared and will not go away. What is it? How do I get rid of it? Mark

  • First day... Lines running down the screen.

    Sigh.
So I get my BRAND NEW, 2.0 GHz Black Macbook today, and I'm wondering if something is wrong with it.
In looking at my screen, it appears that there are lines panning downwards, like it is progressive scanning. (They're a lighter color, and don't appear to be normal)
The lines are horizontal, and run from top to bottom and at the right angle it's obvious that it is going on.
Just wondering if I should take this in and it is repairable, or if others have experienced this problem or what...
    Man this *****.

If you have a new machine (within 14 days) and you're having a problem, you should be able to have Apple replace it for you. I have heard of other people experiencing similar problems (albeit only a few)... but if you feel your machine is clearly behaving in a way it should not, there is no reason not to bring it back to Apple and have it replaced.
