Black border with MBPro and 10.10.2 on external 3840x2160 TV (worked with 10.10.1)

Up to 10.10.1 have been successfully using external 3840x2160 TVs and monitors (Seiki and Philips) with my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) and Iris graphics.
After the update to 10.10.2, when connected to my Seiki 4k TV the MBpro now produces a black border around the active area (2cm left and right, 1cm top and bottom). Before the update, 10.10.1 used the entire width and height of the screen (and so do my other FreeBSD and chromebooks in 3840x2160).
With screen capture (Shift-Command-4) the cursor on the screen shows coordinates 0,0 at top left and 3839,2159 at the bottom right, which makes me think that the graphics card is generating incorrect timings.Fonts, as you can imagine, are a disaster in this interpolated mode.
I would really like to have this regression fixed.

Thanks for the suggestion. :-D
I figured out the problem.
Embedded in the release notes of 10.5.3 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1141) is this little cryptic statement.
"Fixes an issue in which certain attached hard drives may not show up in the Finder."
It turns out the 10.5.2 update broke some specific FW connectivity which were fixed in 10.5.3.
I started from scratch (on Father's Day - LOL) and ran the 10.5.2 Combo update over USB and it worked properly. I did rest of the updates over USB rather than risk FW issues again.
For people who require external HD bootability, this is a caveat that if your favourite interface is broken for driver (or any other software issues), it can create challenges.
My recommendation would be to use an enclosure which supports both USB and FW, which affords a better chance of success - including good FW and USB cables.

  • When I try to open a picture it does open but closes very quickly and the screen displays a black border with a white circle and a ! in the middle????? Help!!! GM

WHEN I OPEN A PICTURE FROM IPHOTO IT CLOSES VERY QUICKLY AND A BLACK BORDER WITH A WHITE CIRCLE WITH AN ! IN THE MIDDLE OF IT. WHEN IT START A SLICE SHOW THE PICTURES ARE NOT THERE. HELP!!!!

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Other than that, what version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later try
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • R9 270x ITX . Black border with hdmi

So I didnt see this posted nor can i find much info about it. When I use HDMI i have a black border and my image is not full screen. does not matter the resolution. Ive tried on both a 24 inch and a 42 inch lcd. both do this. Ive tried a few different catalyst drivers and checked the catalyst control panel for an option that would fix this. Anyone else had this issue? does not happen with dvi or dvi to vga but does with hdmi and dvi to hdmi. any suggestions would be helpful

It's simply scaling issue known from Radeons that can be fixed in Catalyst control center. I had the same with my R9 290X Lightning.

  • HP w2338h Showing black border with HDMI

I switched to using HDMI and now my monitor has about an inch black border around the screen. I can not figure out how to get it to display fully on the screen. I went into the menu settings on the monitor and 'image control' is greyed out, not available to select. I checked the screen resolution settings in control panel and it shows the settings as 1920 x 1080. Previously when I was using the VGA cable it was displaying full screen, the black border showed up after switching to HDMI.

Actually I fixed it earlier... It's an ATI 4350 card so I needed to go into Programs and Catalyst Control Center. Then I need to go the CCC - Advanced and then DTV HDMI settings and change the scalling options from 10% to 0%. I have a full screen now with no distortion. Hope this helps anyone else with the simlar issue.

  • Black border around buttons and boxes

My browser displays a thick black rectangle around buttons and dropboxes. It affects webkit browsers, luakit and surf. This is a stripped down atom desktop. There is gtk 2 2.24, libwebkit 1.8.3, standard xorg, xf86-video-intel 2.20.5 (i915), and cairo, all from the arch repo, and linux-ck-atom 3.5.3 from AUR. I have cairo but no mesa and no compiz. Adding mesa doesn't fix it. But it's possible I removed some important graphic library. Any suggestions how I might fix it?

Thanks for the suggestions. The accelerators don't make a difference, neither does today's new intel driver. I've had the same version of cairo since June (1.12.2-1 -> 1.12.2-2) and this problem is recent. As a last resort I'll try to find an old cairo package. But maybe I should look into libwebkit or gtk first.

  • Websites have a weird black border around things, and sites are white.

I think this layout problem happens in Internet Explorer for me too.
Here's some pictures of what I'm talking about:

    A possible cause is:<br />

  • Why do some photos display with a  black border round them?

I have just bought a Gen 2 ipod touch and have loaded several albums of photos on to it. Some of these photos are displayed with a black border round them and seem to be almost square instead of filling the screen, whilst others are shown in full widescreen aspect. They are taken with the same camera and I have not cropped them in iphoto so I am wondering why they are not filling the screen? Are they not being optimised properly or is there some setting somewhere I am missing?

With all due respect, Old Toad, this problem was extensively documented (with examples) in the question of April 22: "screen aspect ratio is wrong in Photos slideshows".

  • How to achieve black border around a logo

    Hello,
I am trying to do a parody of a Top Gun logo and have it done except for the border around the image. I know this is probably very simple and I've googled it but can't figured it out.
    Here is an example:
    http://www.redbubble.com/people/tgigreeny/works/7360099-top-gun-sundown-with-tomcat
I want to create that black border/background colour and can't figure it out.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    Mary

Well actually it is a bit more complex than I wrote
1 You have to outline the text and
    2. united it with the art (color bars that hbe the same color)
    3. you have to give the object a stroke and drag it below the fill in the appearance panel
4 the jet plane needs a fill of white
    5. the star needs a stroke with the stroke being draged below the fill in the appearaqnce panel
    6. then you group everything and give the group a sufficent weight stroke cover all the gaps
7 and finally you drag the stroke you gave the group below the contents in the appearance panel (that means it is behind the groups contents the logo art.
Like such ( You have to think this one out.)

  • Black border blocking top of screen

Since the iOS 7.1.1 update a black border with the time/battery/sim blocks the top of my games. Does anyone know how to get rid of the border?

How did you import your clips? From analog tapes?
    I quote F Shippey:
"You are probably see a line or two of sync pulses from the ANALOG video. They are normally masked off-screen by the overscan others have talked about. (In fact that's one reason for the overscan - to hide these pulses.)
In the "old days" - when TV sets had vertical and horizontal hold controls - you could adjust the vertical hold to make the picture roll and see several lines of such "junk".
You won't see them when the video is viewed on a TV from a DVD or DV tape. You will see them on your computer."

  • 20" display screen now has black border

My screen suddenly has about a 2" border of black on each side and a 1" black border on top and bottom. Toolbar, desktop picture, etc. all show up as normal. However, I am only able to use about 60% of the screen. In some apps such as Quicken, I can't reach the sizer because the bottom of checkbook register is now in the black part. May not even be a prob. w/the display, because altho the screen of the PC itself has no black border, the images in some apps are cropped as described above. I have tried changing display preferences and black border remains. Ideas/solutions will be v. much appreciated.

Sounds like you'll have to take it in to the Apple store for service. This happened to my wife's iPhone and they just replaced it.

  • How can I print with black border around edge of image?

I'd like to add a black border around the edge of certain images I'm printing. I know it's fairly trivial in Lightroom, but I can't see where this option is in Aperture. Is this lacking in Aperture, or am I just missing it? Many thanks.
PS -- I'm aware there are some plug-ins that claim to do this, so if Aperture can't do this, please feel free to chime in with comments on the best plug-in for this task.

Thanks, Rich. That's a good plug-in, and does cover what I need (with lots of other features, too). The problem, though, is it requires an export of the image, which I then have to either print from another application, or reimport to Aperture to print. I was hoping to find something that will either just apply the border to the print job, or that would serve as more of an Edit With . . . type of plug-in than an Export plug-in, so I can keep everything in one place. Thanks again.

  • IMovie is outputting my movie with big black bars at top and bottom that I don't want

    Quicktime: Ver 10.3
    iMovie: Ver 10.0.5
    OS: OS X Ver 10.9.4
So, let me try and explain...
I have recorded gameplay footage of my game directly from my Mac screen using Quicktime's Record Screen option. I've tried recording both in fullscreen mode (with my game also running in fullscreen mode) and a section of the screen by dragging the mouse to select a 640X960 box (with my game running in windowed mode which is displayed at 640x960 resolution).
This initial recording direct from the screen displays fine, both when I view it in windowed mode and when I view it fullscreen, with the height of the game stretching to the full height of the video area but obviously with big black borders to either side in fullscreen mode (as it's basically iPhone ratio in portrait mode).
    WindowedFullscreen
This ^^^ is how they should look.
The problem is when I try to import the movie into iMovie, mess around with some fade-ins and music and stuff and then output the edited movie via iMovie...
When I then try to view this outputted movie in windowed mode on certain sites (Kickstarter) my game footage doesn't take up the full height of the video and instead floats in the middle with big black bars at the top and bottom, which I don't want. It's fine when I go fullscreen but the problem is that when I load this video into Kickstarter it shows the non-fullscreen view of the video with this big black border and it looks really amateur.
This is what Kickstarter shows in windowed mode i.e. the way you see Kickstarter videos by default when you press Play; unless I go fullscreen and then it takes up the full heigh of the view.
Note: Windowed mode actually looks fine when viewed directly on my Mac but I know it's not Kickstarter that is causing the issue because I can see in the thumbnail preview on my Mac that the video is somehow encoded with the big black bars at the top and bottom. Also, I uploaded the unedited videos to Kickstarter just to check and they display fine. So it's definitely iMovie that is adding these annoying black borders at the top and bottom for whatever reason (and I'm not intentionally scaling the video down in iMove or anything like that as far as I know). I also can't use the unedited footage however because it has no sound and no transitions etc.
Does anyone know what night be causing this and how to get rid of it.

You are lucky to see anything - iMovie 5 is not really compatible with Snow Leopard, which only supports iMovie 6 and above.
Snow Leopard only runs on Intel Macs. iMovie 5 was never written, AFAIK, for Intel, just for the PPC Macs they had in those old days!
