Black borders and duplicate restart/shutdown options

I just started up my computer this morning and now black boxes appear around icons when I mouse over them and borders appear around lines of text - really annoying and distracting. Also, When I go to shutdown or restart, I notice that there are multiple restart, shutdown and log out options. Any ideas what I did and how to fix it?

hi there-
try going to system preferences > universal access. is voice over enabled?? if so, disable it, and it should get rid of your black boxes and duplicate options. [ 8 ) ]

  • Sleep, Restart, Shutdown loop - how do I get out of this loop?

    I installed os X Panther on mom's older iMac.
    Tonight, when it's booted it comes up with "sleep, restart, shutdown" options.
    We've selected each of these 3 items, waited, then either woke it up, waited for it to restart, or restarted it from shutdown; however, again it will eventually show a screen that only allows her to select "sleep, restart, shutdown"
    How does she get out of this loop?
    Note: There is not option to cancel the screen that has "sleep, restart, shutdown."

    Download a fresh copy of Firefox ([http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html]) and do a reinstall of Firefox on top of the current version.<br />
    You may need to do a clean install:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere (not in the Firefox program folder) and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • How can I hide the borders and keep it as an option?

    How can I hide the borders and keep it as an option?  I had someone go into the css I believe, and make it so there were no borders visible on the page (I could see the dotted outline while working on it, but when pushed, it wasn't visible (which is what I wanted).  They called it "noborders."  Since I had to reinstall, it went away.  Help?
    I have Dreamweaver CS5.5

    Try this site:  CSS Border
    Add code then type in a zero. Later add border size you want.
    examples:  border: 0px solid black;
    or
    border: 1px 000000;
    or
         border-top-style: solid; 0px 000000;
         border-right-style: dotted; 0px 000000;
         border-bottom-style: solid; 2px 000000;
         border-left-style: dashed; 1px 000000;

  • IPhoto 09 - iDVD 09: black Borders left/right AND top/bottom

    Setup: Snow Leopard 10.6.3, iPhoto 09, iDVD 09, all patches applied.
    Source Material: HiDef 3:2 pictures in iPhoto, arranged in a iPhoto slideshow.
    Export: "publish to iDVD" in iPhoto - everything works fine.
    Settings in iDVD: professional quality, Always scale slide to TV Safe area: DISABLED. aspect ratio: 16:9
    Target: Full HD TV Screen 16:9
    Result: the image quality is not great, but ok. But: there are huge black borders left/right (which is perfectly fine given the difference between 16:9 and 3:2) AND on the top and buttom of the TV - which is not acceptable by any means.
    When I start the DVD on the Mac DVD-Player, there are no borders in windowed mode, but in full screen too.
    It seems as iDVD 09 simply ignores the uncecked "scale..." preset box.
    Can anyone confirm this, any suggestions? Setting up the slideshow in iDVD/iMovie itself is not an option here, hence my dad is still struggling to get things right in iPhoto

    No, it's just in fill screen mode.

    This is not an iMovie or Apple problem but due to mixing 4x3 and 16x9 material
    It's 2:3 Material (DSLR Pictures), so this won't help.

    You can try to make this the other way around. Start a WideScreen project and
    now You will get the bordet around the 4x3 material instead.
    Only solution is to crop or enlarg one of the material types to get it right.
    As I stated before, there HAVE to be borders for the 2:3 Material on a 16:9 Screen (unless you do some heavy cropping). But I can see no reason why there should be borders on top/bottom of ANY material. As I see it, it's a problem related to a disfuncional "adjust for TV" setting, not the aspect ratio.
    Thanks anyway.

  • 'Install Updates and Shutdown' option not appearing for Windows 8.1 users

    Windows 8.1 users are reporting, and I have verified, that they are not being prompted to install Windows updates while shutting down, even though the updates are downloaded.  Here are the relevant Windows Update gpo's from a sample Group Policy Result
    for a typical user on one of our Windows 8.1 workstations:
    (Note: The "Specify intranet Microsoft update service location" is the last policy in the updates section, and the value specified there is not relevant to this question.)
    These same settings when applied to Windows XP workstations used to prompt users to install updates at shutdown.  That is, the default shutdown option was "Install Updates and Shutdown".  That was a great workflow because all client workstations
    were shut down every night and the user didn't have to worry about updates installing while they were using the workstation.  All client workstations are now running Windows 8.1 Pro and the only way updates are getting installed is by manually pulling
    up the Windows Update dialog and initiating updates from there.  That is even worse than automatic updates that install during business hours.
    I do notice that
    a notification that updates are available appears in the login screen, but one can not take action upon it from there, and most users don't know how to find the update screen once they sign in; and
    once updating is begun, then the Install Updates and Shutdown option becomes a default - but by that point its rather cosmetic: that is the only option (to configure the partially installed updates during shutdown) and there is nothing
    that could be done to NOT do that at that point.
    Is anyone having similar issues?  As far as I can tell right now, there is no ability to actually switch the user's default option to
    Install Updates and Shutdown in the same way as in previous Windows editions even though the GPO is identical.

    Just to make certain, you inserted the original installation disk and started the MBP holding down the C key?  Did the Optical drive reject the disk or did it just spin?  If the former, the lens in the drive may be dirty and needs to be cleaned.  If the latter, you will have to take it to an Apple repair facility.

  • Black Borders Top and Bottom in iMovies

    Hi,
    I'm editing Quicktime files in iMovies 5.0.2. with a view to putting them on line as streaming film clips. Before I imported these files into iMovies, there were no black borders around the films, non at either the sides of the screen and non at the top or bottom (I cropped them off in MPEG streamclip when I was convering the files from .VOB files to Quicktime files).
    After editing these Quicktime files I am compressing them via the 'File -share' function in iMovies. I am compressing them as Quicktime files using the 'Expert settings.' (I'll spare you all the details of exactly what setting I'm using)
    My problem is, that although there are no black borders when I import these files into iMovies, as soon as they appear in iMovies there are black borders on the clips, both at the top and the bottom (though not at the sides).
    I have tried different things during compression (such as checking and unchecking various boxes in 'expert settings - sizing options') but I still I cannot make a film that doesn't have these black borders both at the top and the bottom of the film (like what's called 'cine screen' I think)
    I want to get rid of these black borders. Does anyone know how I can do this in iMovies?
    Thanks.

    iBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi,
    Thanks for the advice. Here's the latest with my 'black borders top and bottom in iMovies' problem:
    I found out that if I converted the .VOB files into .DV files (using MPEG Streamclip) instead of converting them to Quicktime files, then when I import these .DV files into iMovies the black borders are no longer there. So it seems like the problem was something to do with Quicktime files in iMovies.
    But then there was another problem:
    After waiting quite a while for MPEG Streamclip to finish it's work of converting the .VOB files into .DV files, and then waiting a bit longer to import the .DV files into iMovies, I was ready to work on editing the clips. But whenever I added either a fade in or fade out to a clip, I saw that during the time of the fade in or out, the picture was all distorted with thin vertical lines running through the entire picture.
    So I had to do more trouble shooting:
    I went back to MPEG Streamclip to have a little play around in there. When I made the .DV files before I used the compressor setting DVC Pro 50, so I changed this to the DVC Pro 25. I made a short .DV clip using this compressor and tried it out in iMovies and there was no problem with the vertical line distortion. Just to make sure I made another small .DV clip using DVC Pro 50 as before, imported that into iMovies and again, during the fade in/out effects this distortion came back again. So it seems like I sorted that problem out too.

  • Force Quit window 'blank' and cannot use shutdown/restart in menu

    I have a Dual G5 running 10.5.8.
    Over the past 2 months I will have a situation where my computer will still work in individual applications, but
    1. I cannot use apple-tab to change applications
    2. I cannot select the restart/shutdown menu
    3. option-apple-esc brings up the Force Quit menu, but its blank
    I end up having to hard-restart the machine using the button on the front.
    Anyone have ideas on what may be at the root of this?
    I have created another user account but still get the error.
    I have a new hard drive installed.
    I have run /sbin/fsck/ -fy all is clean
    I have run repair permissions
    What next?

    Hi
    I have seen damaged/corrupted fonts cause similar issues. If you've introduced/downloaded new fonts in the last two months perhaps it's these that's causing the problems?
    Have you tried booting from the installer disk and trying for an Archive & Install and selecting the Preserve Network users and Settings option? You could try using something more industrial like DiskWarrior first?
    Whilst you have the chance make sure you have any relevant backups made and handy. Yes I know it's a brand new drive etc but you never know?

  • I plugged my macbook pro into an external monitor, then unplugged it later and now it is stuck with black borders on top and bottom and zoomed out like it is still on the monitor. How do I fix it?

    I started using my external monitor with my macbook pro and as soon as I plug it in it to the monitor it adjusts the screen by zooming out a bit and creating about 3/4 of an inch black borders on the top and bottom of the screen. But these dont show up on the monitor so I assumed it was fine. But when I took it off the monitor, the borders were still there like it was still on the monitor. Any hellp? Its starting to mess with my eyes haha.

    Hi aefulcher,
    It sounds like you had the external display set to mirror the internal display so the resolution(s) were changed to match each other.

    I am trying to remove 2 full page size black borders in my pages document and whn i click on them they show greyed x's but i cannot manipulate or remove them.   What to do?

    John,
    While the grayed x corners are showing, Arrange > Unlock.
    Now you will be able to manipulate or delete the borders.

  • After errors with disk partition, I removed Windows from my iMac. Now when I start my computer it goes into a black screen and not straight into the Mac area like it used to, unless I hold Alt straight away to give me the option.  Any help?

    Hi,
    Sorry, I'm new to the community, so apologies if I'm repeating myself.
    OK, so I tried to install Windows Vista onto my iMac with the disk partition.  Everything was going fine and it wasn't until last minute, when it was installed that an error came up saying that this can only be done with Windows 7.  After this error, I couldn't access any errors of my iMac and when I shut down and restarted my computer, it automatically logged into Windows.
    So after a panic, I rang Apple Care and the lady helped me log into my apple area, delete Windows from my iMac, and all was restored.
    However, now when I shut down my computer and boot it back up, I think my iMac is trying to log into Windows areas that no longer exist.  It loads up a black screen and doesn't move from there.  To log into my Apple area, I have to do the whole process of holding Alt immediately after I switch the power on and access the Mac drive and log in that way.
    It's beginning to become a real pain and I'm paranoid this process is going to damage my computer.  Any advice on how to restore logging-in back to it's former glory when I first purchased it?
    Thanks

    Solved it.  Thank you very much for that!
