Black box behind iCal or Apple mail windows in OS 10.8.2

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I sometimes get a black box behind the window of iCal or Apple Mail. It goes away when I quit and relaunch the app. This does not happen all the time, only sometimes. Also- so far it has only effected the two Apple apps.
I only notice ir when I am moving a window out of the way and the black box (the same size as the window) is left behind.

If the issue only shows up once every five days and you can't reproduce it, I don't have any suggestions. There are a few other reports like yours. I don't know whether it's an obscure bug or a conflict with third-party software.

  • I want to highlight various words in a pages document with a yellow or black box behind the text

I want to use a highlighter in Pages. I know how to do it in steps.. but would like a shortcut to highlight various words throughout the document with a yellow or black box behind the text.. help

I got another idea. Create a style with the text and background colour you want. You can apply a short cut for that style. Beware that the styles is only for that particular document but you can import styles or you can use Save as Template and keep it as a template.

  • Black Boxes Behind Icons– HELP!

Hi! I like making my own icons and then taking IconComposer (Developer tool) and having it make me a icns file. It works great, except anytime, yes anytime, I put any kind, ANY kind of custom icon on anything, instead of the background of the icon being transparent (alpha channel,) I see a big black box behind everything. If there isn't something on every one of the 32 or however many pixels in my icon, black shows up. HELP!!!!

OOPS! I must not of turned voice over to "off" as previously suggested. All situations resolved.

  • OS X Yosemite black box behind volume GUI?

    Hello!
Ever since updating to OS X Yosemite, when changing the volume there has been a black box behind the GUI that comes up when you press the volume change button. Any suggestions on how to fix this annoying glitch?
    Thanks

Thanks! All I had to do was uncheck the little box in the Accessibility pane.

  • Why does Apple Mail window default to wrong monitor?

I have two 30" Apple monitors with a MacPro 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks. In previous systems I would have my Apple Mail open on the second monitor. Since Mavericks nothing I do will let Mail open anywhere but in its default position, which is upper left corner of main monitor. Very frustrating. I must manually move it every time I launch Mail. Any solutions out there?
fyi - iTunes window opens to the same position where I had closed it, which is on my second monitor where I want it.

I have this with Firefox once in a while. To get it back where I want it, I open FF and drag it to the display I want it on & maximize it. Then, I open iTunes on the display I DON'T want FF in, and maximize it. Open a few tabs and close the window. When I reopen it iTunes prevents FF from opening on the other display and it goes back to the secondary.
That may or may not work with Mail

  • I have a new imac with osx 10.6.8 and can't get letter box to open in the mail window with 3 columns.  I have downloaded the latest version and it also didn't open in 10.6.7.  Any ideas?

Letterbox downloads and installs and is enabled, but does not produce the 3 columns in the mail window.  I had the same problem with 10.6.7 and now 10.6.8.  The download is the latest version (0.24b9) and the forums indicated that it works with both osx versions.  I have tried deleting the letterbox plug-in and then reinstalling, but still no luck with the 3 column mail page.  Any ideas would be most welcome.  Thanks

i just fixed this on my machine running 10.6.8. the typical workaround is to add appropriate UUIDs, which get updated with each new os build, and break plugins (see here). Follow those instructions, but instead of adding the UUIDs they suggest for 10.6.7, add these (I found them on my machine running 10.6.8, and they work):
    064442B6-53C0-4A97-B71B-2F111AE4195B
    588FF7D1-4310-4175-9980-145B7E975C02
for fixing on os x version 10.6.7, this may help (though letterbox 0.24b9 should work already).
i emailed the author (aaron harnly, harnly.net) about this, but haven't heard back (a few days). to be sure, i am quite grateful, as i think we all are, for his excellent plugin, and this workaround is quite simple for dealing with updates.

  • Rotated transparent images Muse CC 2014 not compatible with IE8....  they all appear with a black box behind them.

IE 8 is supposed to be supported by muse CC 2014 but its not in the case of rotated transparent images.. Did not have this problem in the previous version of Muse.  The code did not have progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Matrix... now it does...
Had to add ie8 specific css and code to the page and use a composite image instead of the individual images to get a page with no black boxes...

I see this is still an issue even after the latest update....  Will this problem be addressed?  Right now I have to manually update the html code for each page after export.    This is a site that I update regularly so every time a change is made I have to fix each page so it can be viewed without the black boxes in ie8.

  • Where has the black background box behind attachments come from?

Suddenly I have a black box behind any attachments. It is like a text box. It has not been there before!
If I choose to print to a pdf attachment in an eMail the attachment id superimposed on a black text box with an 'X' in the corner, click the 'x' the lot disappears. But if you turn the attachment into an icon and highlight it then erase it, left behind is a black text box into which any new typed message appears.
How do I get rid of this, any suggestions well received.
    Thanks,
    David

I get this when sending invoices from Market Circle's Billings.
One workaround I have found that works is once the file and a new message is open in mail, create a new message then drag and drop the attachment over then create your message in the new mail.
I agree though - need a permanent fix soon.

  • Can't boot - black box at apple

    Hello,
I'm having trouble booting my ibook. I'm using 10.2.8. When I boot, I get past the gray screen, to the gray apple, and then after several seconds the gray apple gets partly covered by a black square. And it stays there.
It gets stuck there with the black box when I try safe mode, verbose mode, single user mode. So I haven't been able to try fsck. I have run disk utility and repaired permissions and verified the disk. I have reset the PRAM/NVRAM and the PMU and have replaced the mach_kernel. It seems my next step would be to reinstall the OS and I thought I'd ask here first.
I can boot off of an install CD and in OS 9.
This happened yesterday after updating apple software that apple recommended to update: a QT update and two ipod updates, one of which was from 06. I also installed yahoo messenger yesterday, and have deleted it, and its preferences. Obviously something in this combination wasn't a good idea.... When I rebooted after the updates were installed, I left the computer booting, and didn't come back to it for several hours. When I came back, I had the black box covering the gray apple.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

    Thanks roam.
Yes, I have run disk utility and repaired permissions and verified the disk. I've done it three times. There was never anything to repair and the permissions are now okay.
It looks like reinstalling the system will be more complicated than I thought. I have the 10.2 upgrade CDs which, I read in Apple Support, don't do archive installs. I wanted to verify this, and went to install off the 10.2 upgrade CDs, and the install program said I couldn't install because the system on my hard drive was more recent. I guess this is the upgrade from 10.2 to 10.2.8. I have no disks for 10.2.8, and no memory of this upgrade. Might it have been one of the regular updates? And so I'd have no install disks. Why wouldn't the 10.2 disks just install 10.2 and then I could update to 10.2.8 again?
So, I'm not sure what to do to reinstall. And am still wondering if I have other alternatives....
Disk Warrior? Would it be worth the $100 to try? And it's website says that you can't install it onto a system with 10.2. But can I still repair 10.2 off the DiskWarrior disks? Can I make these disks from a download to a computer with OS 10.4?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • How can I migrate from Outlook 2011 to iCal and Apple Address Book in Mavericks now that synching is no longer possible?

Now that I am on Mavericks and no longer able to sync between my iPhone/iPad and Outlook 2011 on my MacBook Pro, I'm finally taking the leap (which I should have done long ago) and abandoning Outlook 2011 all together (doesn't help that Outlook now prompts me to rebuild by Identity multiple times per day). I am hoping to export from Outlook to iCal, Address Book, etc, but I would love it if someone could check my steps.
Delete iCal and Apple Address Book content -- Because I have old data in iCal and Address Book (that was synched before I upgraded to Mavericks), I planned to delete this data as follows:
Manually deleting my multiple calendars in the iCal app
Go to Go>Home>Library>Calendars and drag "Calendar Cache" to trash
Go to Go>Home>Library>Caches and drag "com.apple.iCal" and "com.apple.AddressBook" to the trash
Go to Go>Home>Library>Application Support and drag "Address Book" to the trash
Export Outlook 2011 Calendars to iCalIs there a file format that I can use to export from Outlook 2011 and then import into iCal? I will use this file format to individually export each of my calendars from Outlook 2011 and import them into iCal.
Export Outlook 2011 Contact List to Apple Address BookIs there a file format that I can use to export from Outlook 2011 and then import into Apple Address Book?
    Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi acs4055,
As per your query I found a relevant solution for resolving this,  actually I haven’t tried the steps you wrote here in your query.  But I found a solid key answer for exporting from Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.1) Outlook 2011 to iCal for Apple mail. This is possible through Drag and Drop method via this you can undoubtedly migrate Outlook 2011 Calendar to ical format.
Hope it will assist you and you will be able to attain a desired solution.

  • I cannot watch You tube. I get a black box where the video should play with no bar underneath to

Please I don't know how to deal with this as I'm not at all technically minded. I have Windows Vista Business 32 bit operating system. I cannot watch Youtube since earlyier today, I just get the full page but no bar underneath the video screen which is just a black box now. I am using Windows internet explorer and recently downloaded latest Adobe Flashplayer for Windows Vista. I do not know any other technical information but depend a lot on Youtube as I am semi-housebound and don;t watch tv - just old tv shows. Thank you and please help me with this, as I feel lost without Youtube. I have http://WIN 10,2,152,26 Flash Player ( think the http/  isn't relevant it just appeared)

It's an Adobe 10.2 issue. All that is being said is "turn hardware acceleration off". Well 1) that doesn't work, and 2) what's the po
int of having it if it doesn't work?
Gramaqueen, I have the same problem, and it will only be fixed when Adobe fixes this issue
    Good luck.

  • HT201250 Hi, how do I restore my email from Time Machine, I use Apple Mail, I can't see a folder marked "email" Thanks

Hi, How do i restore my email when it has been backed up in a time capsule, I can see files for photos, documents etc etc, but nothing that says email. i use Mavericks and Apple Mail
Thanks - fist time using this so forgive me if I havent given enough info

The simpliest way to restore Apple Mail emails is to make sure that Apple Mail is the active application running on your OS X Desktop. Then click the Time Machine icon on the OS X menu bar, and then, select the "Enter Time Machine" option. Time Machine should open with a number of Apple Mail windows with copies of your email messages over time.

I recently purchased an Apple TV box & the App for Apple TV from the Apple store. Now how do I get it to work? I am a card-carrying technological imbecile.

If I'm understanding correctly, you have an Apple TV 2 (the small, black box version of the Apple TV), and downloaded the Remote App from the iTunes Store for your iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad, correct?  If so...
For the AppleTV setup, hook it up to your television and, if applicable, your Surround Sound system.  To do this, you'll use an HDMI cable (not included, available here) to hook the AppleTV to your Television.  The cable only fits one way, and should slide effortlessly into place.  If, and only if, you intend to use your surround sound system with the AppleTV, you will also need what's called a TOSLINK Optical Cable (also not included, available here).  This cable goes from the AppleTV to a port labelled Optical In or Digital In on the back of your surround receiver (consult the manual that came with your surround sound system for additonal help).
From here on, we'll focus on hooking up the AppleTV, then how to setup the Remote App from Apple on your iOS device.
The AppleTV needs a network connection in order to function correctly.  A wired connection is recommended, but Wi-Fi is built-in to the AppleTV if a wired connection isn't available.  With the AppleTV plugged into your television, follow the on-screen instructions for setup.  To connect the AppleTV to your Wi-Fi network, you'll need to know the name of the network you want to connect to, as well as any password needed to connect to it.  When the AppleTV has a network connection, it'll load the latest selection of TV Shows, Movies and Music for display on the main menu - that's the easiest way to tell everything's working.
For the Remote App, all you need to do is download the free application to a compatible iOS device (Any iOS device running iOS 3.1.2 or higher).  Once downloaded, go to the computer hosting your iTunes library, and turn on Home Sharing.  Finally, start the Remote App on your iOS device (be it iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch), login with the same information you setup Home Sharing with, and away you go!  The Remote App is entirely optional, since the AppleTV can be controlled by the included remote control, but it's a nice touch nonetheless.
I hope this answered your question, or at least helped put you on the path to success.  If you need something clarified, please don't hesitate to ask here.

  • When opening Apple Mail links 2 Firefox Windows Open, The top one is blank and the one behind it contains the web link page???

Whether with previous version of Firefox, or new one (3.6.4), when I open an Apple Mail link, Firefox opens 2 windows. Top window is blank, window behind it contains web page for mail link that I hit. I can't find anything in preferences of mail or Firefox to resolve this issue.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

I have discovered one solutionto my problem, which is not really convenient and is something I don't have to do with Safari 5 -- If I have Firefox open, but not a window open, then when I click on an Apple Mail link, only 1 window opens. But I don't always want to have my browser open, so this is kinda annoying. I'd rather not use Safari -- Firefox is so much better. Please fix this! Thanks.

  • Black box back on iCal Alarms

I just installed a QuickTime update and the alarm clock from iCal's alarm window is now the black box. This has happened before with a QuickTime update and it was fixed by enabling Flash: System Preferences->QuickTime->Advanced->check enable Flash box. I've tried to do this again but the Advanced pane does not have anything about enabling Flash. Anyone have any answers?

I just noticed the same thing, again -- the dreaded black box instead of an animated vibrating alarm clock that used to be there in event notifications... (the black box is quite ugly, really).
I since reviewed a couple of online sources, and it appears that Apple has disabled Flash animation in QuickTime -- either with the QuickTime 7.3.1 update. ("With this update, the Flash media handler in QuickTime is disabled except for a limited number of existing QuickTime movies that are known to be safe." Citation: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307176)
Consequently, there's no way to turn Flash on in the Advanced QuickTime preferences, as before.
Questions for you Apple employees out there: 1.) why is Apple's own alarmclock.mov file (the one we're used to seeing) considered unsafe?
And 2.) couldn't you give us a break and post another another .mov file that'll work, or give us a workaround, so we don't have to look at that nasty black box?
We'll love you forever if you can help.
