Black Home Hub Speed

I have one of the black hubs which has been ok apart from the constant drop in speed over time. This has occurred ever since I signed up to FON and if I power cycle the hub the speed is restored back up to 7+ every time. If I look in the Devices on the hub when the speed has dropped I usually see lots of other devices which aren't mine, such as IPhones. I am presuming its these which are connecting temporarily via WiFi and are taking my bandwith but the hub does not appear to re-claim the bandwith when they disconnect from the hub. Anyone confirm/deny this?
The really annoying part is having to physically climb under my desk and unplug the hub as it has no reset switch. I have a friend who is emigrating to Oz in 2 months and they say I can have their hub 2 when they go and that has the reset switch on the side...
Am about to maybe recontract but dont want a hub 3 as the BB Talk does not work and we have 3 hub phones around the house.

you can always take the HH3 if offered/negotiated and keep as a spare - you are not forced to use it

I wantd to get into my 2.0 Home Hub Manager (the black home hub) to see the settings.  I have searched all over the bt site and I keep being referred back to   http.//bthomehub.home/   BUT when I type this in, I get back,   page not available, moved, not working.  Does any one know if this bt page still exists, has moved, broken down etc.  or any other page that will take me to my hub.  I have my password to take me into 'Settings' if only I can get there.  Bejay

You can register most DECT portable phones against the home hub bas station, if that is what you are trying to do.

  • My Mac is wired to the home hub but I also want wi...

I have today commissioned my black Home Hub to my Mac and it is working perfectly.  But my son has a PC laptop (Vista) and wants to connect to the internet using my Home Hub whilst my Mac is still connected.  I am sure this is possible but I don't know how to achieve this without affecting my own wired connection.  We tried to connect by entering my wireless key but all it said on his laptop was "the settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."  I previously had a Netgear router that he was able to log into with another ISP, but should this affect a new connection on his laptop?  Basically is it his laptop or my hub that's the problem? Hope someone can help.

To connect wirelessly you would need just one wireless access point like the home hub, the 220v does not have the wireless facility. You would only need one wireless router on your set up.
To connect wireless just have a check out at This link it shows how to connect most type of BT routers, for You need no special programs for an apple, as long as you have airport on the MAC as that is what is used to connect wirelessly

  • Newbee Needs Help. BT Home Hub Wireless connectio...

    Dear Forum,
As a newbee I thought I would ask the masses. I have a black home hub 2. It is hard wired to a number of PC's in the house, plus it also provides a wireless connection reliably most of the time. Occationally, every day/other day it refuses to provide a reliable IP address. My wireless is set as follows:-
    Channel 11, WEP, 64 Bit.
    Current firmware
    Version 8.1.H.J (Type A)
    Last updated
    08/12/09
I can attach fine normally, but then it fails to connect (on a know working machine) after a reboot. I get the error "Limited or no Connection". This occurs with Pc's running VISTA, and Macs?
The only resolution I have found is to RESET the hub. Then all devices attach fine. If I disable wireless on my portable and re-enable it, it also fails. Once in a failed state its only resolution is to RESET.
    Can advice?
    Many thanks
    Mike

you might want to change the wireless settings of the hub to 802.11 b/g to see if this makes a difference, also can try change the wireless channel as well to see if that makes a difference

  • Home Hub 3 with low sync speed

Excuse a newbie who's somewhat jealous of people complaining how they only get 8Mbps!
A combination of factors means that for months I have been getting a sync of 2624-3040, which equates to a profile of 2000-2500 and resultant download speeds of 1650-2250 using my old Voyager 2091. Then about a year ago, after fitting an I-plate etc. etc. I was achieving fairly consistent downloads at 2200 - so I asked for BT Vision. I can't comment on it, because almost immediately my download speed dropped and my profile was set back to 2000 so Vision was a waste of space. This didn't correct over time, so at the end of September I called up and an engineer came to test my line, swapped me to a new pair due to earthing issues and said I might want to replace my trusty old voyager. All this disruption still had negligible effect, so around Xmas I obtained a Home Hub 3.
Bad to worse - in the last week I have had to reboot the HH3 at least 5 times (so I'll never get to the end of my BRAS training period) and whereas before I could watch Iplayer etc. 95% of the time, now it seems incapable of streaming for more than half an hour, before the speed drops below an acceptable limit. I'm close to junking the HH3 and going back to the Voyager.
Is this normal? I've read about the HH3 dropping speeds on contention - am I seeing the issue because this makes my speed unusable? (A drop of 1Mb on an 8Mb speed might be annoying, but for me it's fatal!) or do I have a rogue hub .... in which case, what do I do?

Results fresh in as you'll see - internet froze again 20 minutes ago and forced ANOTHER reboot.
With regards to your standard questions - as you'll see from my earlier post, I had a BT engineer in with me for over 4 hours in September, so all the "normal" tests were done, internal wiring checked, quiet line test was done from the master socket, he even swapped me to a new pair with better earth. There are 3 extension and the NTE5, all filtered. .... oh and neighbours with another provider achieve 2K+ constantly.
I am not now connected to the NTE5, but the engineer cut the bell wire and it has an I-Plate anyway (belt & braces!). During tests with him and for 3 weeks after (without a reboot) the router was connected directly to the master socket and it made no difference, except weakening the wireless signal to my office. So I am again connected to my office extension socket, as before, and the move had no discernable effect on sync since October.
So I'm not really expecting much on sync,  live in a rural area, 2.5 clicks from the exchange (ADSL/POTS) but have a line length of over 4Km using the normal calcuation, probably with lovely aluminium along the way.
I'm just gobsmacked that the new Hub appears to be unfit for purpose, drops the download speed at the drop of a hat and freezes up on a regular basis .... so this is my final fling before jacking it and probably joining my neighbours with a provider who CAN offer an improvement.

  • Home hub 3 orange power light and speed problem

Hi, I have posted this again as I think I posted in the wrong place last time being new to the site!
Hi, I have a Home Hub 3 Version A. Orange power light constantly on.
I came across this site while looking for answers and quickly registered to post this.
I have tried all suggestions including a neighbours power supply (Version A as well) to no avail.
    Background to help with replies.
I have been had option 3 since 2003.
In that time I have had
    H H 1 (failed)
    H H 1 replacement (failed)
Netgear – weak wireless and does not like Vodafone suresignal
    H H 2 constant dropouts
    Back to Netgear
    H H 3 Version A lasted 24hrs
    Back to Netgear.
For the last 5 months we have been having line problems, regular dropouts.
BT Openreach have been out 4 times, changed virtually everything and traced line back to Exchange.
The last engineers conclusion was line at my home is capable of 12meg and was being throttled as he called it to around 6meg.
He suggested trying a H H 3 and contacting BT for line to be opened up.
    For two reasons.
With a faster speed line fault would be easier to locate.
Line was capable of so much more.
Several LONG calls to BT answering all the format questions first, (to be fair 0800 so no cost) each time first being told my speed was within contract stated speeds, then after my explanation regarding BT Openreach engineers views I was told an engineer would be contacted to improve line speed.
    Needless to say nothing happened.
The frustrating point being each new call generated the same response – NOTHING on their system to show a previous call had been made by me.
Hence the reason for this post.
I feel the helpline, whilst free, achieves nothing except a long time on the phone answering repetitive questions answered before.
I am loathe to phone again as I will undoubtedly be told there is no record of any previous calls or action and I want to resolve the H H 3 Version A problem so it can be used.
    Any help appreciated

Hi John46 and thanks for the reply.
    Can't try H H 3 it is dead.
i saw somewhere on the forums when i first found you about a route that simplifies action from BT.
Have looked since and cannot locate it.
Do you know where it is?

Thank you for pointing me to the test, even if I had a game with Java before I could use it (New PC)!
As I read the results I am under 8meg. Openreach engineer said line was being 'throttled' as it was capable of circa 12meg this distance from the exchange. I am meant to be on 20meg contract.
    Chhers,
I will watch out for a reply.
Any pointers on the H H 3 complaint route would be appreciated, i am begining to think I imagined it!!!

  • Home Hub 3 Speed Issue

Some 6 weeks ago I had an issue with losing my internet connection completly, and eventually after a long session with the help desk I magaged to reconnect using the direct port on the main phone socket. However since then I have had a speed issue and Ive been only getting speeds in the order of 2.3Mb.
However running the BT speed test tells me that the connection to my Home Hub 3 is running at 8.13Mb, but the connection to my computer is running at 2.18Mb.
I have tried every thing  I can think of. Followed all the advice to improve the connection but nothing works. Reseting the Home Hub, reseting the factory defaults. I've closed down every program running in the background, disconnected the rest of the hardwired network, fitted a new shorter cat 6 cable. All to no avail. The speed still stays firmly at 2.18 to 2.15. down and 0.37 up.
Could their be a fault with my Home Hub?
    Thaks for any advice.

  • Xbox 360 / home hub 3 ethernet speed issues

    Some advice/help needed please.
I've connected by xbox 360 (slim) to my home hub 3 via Ethernet but it is connecting at random speeds.
Some days it connects at 100mb (which I would expect it to connect at), other days it connects at only 10mb!
I've tried using different ports on the back of the hub, making sure nothing else is connected but sometimes to no avail.
I know the xbox is 10/100 compatable and tries to connect at the fastest speed available but I just don't understand why sometimes it connects at 10mb and everything I try it refuses to connect any faster!
It's not like a pc where I can go into the network adapter to try to force connecting at 100mb.
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks

  • Downloading at maximum speed causes BT Home Hub 3 ...

    Hi there,
We have a BT Home Hub 3 which to be honest, is awful. Everytime someone downloads something from a source with good servers (e.g. I can DL it at the maximum speed my line allows), it prevents anyone else on the network from loading anything at all. We can roughly get 2.1MB/s, but as soon as this is reached, everyone else is kicked from the network.
How can I prevent this? It's ridiculous that everytime I want to download something which doesn't have the ability to cap the speed, I have to let the download finish, reboot the router, usually at least twice.
    Really dissapointed in BTs services.

this link show many posts of hub3 wifi problems https://community.bt.com/t5/Other-Broadband-Queries/BT-home-hub-5-wifi-keeps-dropping/td-p/1447659

  • Speed variations and needing to reset Home Hub

Hi everyone.  Just a quick post to say i have had infinity for almost 12 months and apart from the odd hiccup now and then i have been extremely pleased with the speeds and service
I recently upgraded to Infinity 2 just like many others and am now seeing the same problem that a few others have posted about....i.e. at seemingly random times my speed is dropping from approx 60 Mb/sec to more like 3 Mb/s.  If i reboot the home hub then the speeds immediately return to normal!!
Just wondering if anyone has any further info as to why this seems to be happening to myself and a few others.....( only happened since the upgrade )
Not a big deal really and i am still more than happy to be lucky enough to be able to get Infinity in the first place

Hey, a lot of posts on here have been about this very issue.
I still have to be 100% convinced it's a hub fault though, but getting a replacement can't hurt. Why am I not totally convinced?
Well, I can go weeks without any issues at all - no real heavy downloads, no p2p, no TV stuff, no films - my speeds hold up as expected given the IP profile - then suddenly, bang, down from 55Megs to 0.5 megs. My HH3 did it a few times before my upgrade to 80/20, but I have found that a simple internet disconnect and connect via the hub manager fixes it. You do notneed to touch the modem or power cycle the hub, just go in via 192.168.1.254 using your browser, find the right section and do as above.
We should not need to be doing this and I wonder how many HH3 returns are simply being recycled back out again? Otherwise I can see there being an HH3 mountain, much like the old butter mountains of latter days!
Keep us informed as to how you go on ... if it continues, how often does it drop speed etc. It all helps us build up a picture of what might be going on. Nothing sinister one hopes ;-)
    Cheers,
Rob (and have been stable for a couple of weeks now, no reconnects needed! And no HH3 change either)

  • After installed Home Hub 5 my wireless speed drop ...

    Hi there.....

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi there.............
I have solved the problem why the speed has dropped down to 10 mb on wireless device!
For anyone in the future that upgrade to the home Hub 5 I will like to mention the reason so they know what to do:
Once you installed the home hub 5 , turn it on and add wireless device to it . When you open the browser on your wireless device Bt home hub will pop up the ' parental guide ' page for you to set up . You can set it up or click do not want it then it's will go back to the main web page !
Because some of us who use apple device such as iphone don't use the browers and use the apps so didn't know that .
So once you went through the parental guide page your bt speed on your device will went back to full speed !! All my wireless device went back to normal around 50 mb !!
I hope the above statement will help who ever going to upgrade to home hub 5 soon and will notice why the speed drop so much and what is the reason for it and don't need to mess around with your home hub channel coz just the simple parental guide set up page need to finish the setting !'

  • Setting up bt home hub with airport extreme and timecapsule

Hi I am running BT Broadband direct into a BT Home Hub (Black version) then ethernet into an airport extreme.
Timecapsule then extending the apple network and an iMac ethernet into the timecapsule
Various other macbooks, iPhones,iPads, iPods and apple tv wirelessly linked in. (and an hp multifunction printer)
The network seems very slow and unstable - any suggestions on how to tune it?
    Thanks
    Nigel

Introducing wireless repeater or bridge causes double hopping wireless. It greatly reduces speed and efficiency of wireless. I am not 100% sure I understand your arrangement. But there are limited wireless channels and the result of many wireless devices fighting each other is bad.
    1. Do you have wireless turned off in the Home Hub? Please do unless it is providing important connections.
    2. What mode is the AEBS running in? Because with BT you must use the home hub as a router, you should have the AEBS bridged. Is that the case?
    3. Wireless extending networking adds issues as stated. Get rid of this. The best method is to link the TC and AEBS by alternative.. ie ethernet is the best by huge margin. If you cannot do this in your house then use EOP adapters. They are not foolproof but if they work, they keep working with reliability and stabilty and speed that wireless cannot match. You can then run the AEBS and TC as roaming WAP, by using different channels but same SSID (wireless name), and security settings and passwords.

  • Home hub 3 and gaming

Hey all im new to bt broadband but have a quick query to ask of anyone who can help.
I live in an area where broadband speeds arent great tbh, when i lived at my parents the download speeds would never go above 1.3 mbps but i assumed that was cos they had a basic bb package with aol. Never the less though even with the poor transfer rates i almost never had a problem with lag when playing games online on my ps3( cod:black ops mainly).
I have now recently moved out and decided to get my bb through bt as they said that they can give my 10mbps for my area although they was honest and said the reality of the speed would more be in the region 0f 6 mbps but this was still very satisfactory for me.
At the mo im only getting 2mbps but im aware it can take up to 10days of my line being monitered at the exchange ( which happens to be a 10 min walk tops from the house) before they increase the speed. This im also fine with but heres my problem. At mum and dads i would almost never get lag at all even with my transfer rates being so low but now im running my wireless off the new home hub 3 and with a slightly better transfer rate than my parents house ive noticed online gaming very laggy indeed. Ive tried port forwarding but that still didnt make a difference.
Can any body else shed some light as to what could be the cause?
Thanks for reading all of the above i know theres quite a bit to read through lol

Hi arnie30uk, as Darren said gaming and wireless is never gonna be great. Have you thought about trying one of the units that use your home power cables e.g.
    http://www.google.co.uk/#sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=network+through+power+outlet&aq=1&aqi=g5&aql=...
Only thing you need to be aware of with most of these is that both units need to be on the same circuit i.e if you have down stairs sockets on one fuse and the upstairs on another then they may not work.

  • Infinity Home Hub Datasheet

Hi does anybody have a datasheet or technical details on the new Infinity Home Hub.  I used to have the old one (black curved one).  This was wireless N, but as it only has 1 aerial I could never get more than 130mbps using wireless, so I changed to a Netgear router with 2 aerials and can get up to 270mbbs which I need with our house.
So I was wondering what the wireless spec of the new HH is?
    Thanks
    Duncan

    Hi Duncan,
    In This.- http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/wireless-routers/1283386/bt-home-hub-3/specifications
    it mentions
    Stated speed
    300Mbit/s
This is the BT info on the HH3 http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10477/~/user-guides-for-broadband-hardware
If you have a look around the forum you will notice a few recent posts where people are disappointed with it's wireless performance and have replaced it.
Example in a link on this post.- http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/No-wireless-network-capability-with-BT-Infinity/m-p/294071#M1...
