Black jagged edges appear on footage with Avid DNxHD codec

Hello,
Currently I'm editing some GoPro footage from my vacation, and I'm editing this video in Premiere and After Effects.
When I was done editing in Premiere and exported the video as a Quicktime movie with the Avid DNxHD codec, I brought it in to After Effects.
The project in After Effects is a 16 bpc since I have to dynamically stretch the footage to make it fit in a 1080p comp (doesn't have to do with this, but the point is, I have to edit in 16 bpc in order to stretch my footage). Now the problem is, I get weird black blocks around my clipped highlights, and this only happens in 16 or 32 bpc.
Here's a screen shot I took from it:
Gyazo - 549356228a841d35b781c05c2b41011b.png
I don't know a lot about codecs and I have no idea how to solve this, so my question is: How do I get rid of these black blocks while still maintaining this 16 bits per channel?
It would be great if anyone could give me the answer .
Jeroen

I just came up with a solution myself. In Premiere, change in the DNxHD codec settings from ''709'' to ''RGB''.
When you bring it into AE again, it won't have the black edges anymore.
However, I don't really know what this does to the quality of the video, but there's not a noticable difference.

  • Power PC G5 Unable to Play .MOV File with Avid DNxHD Codec

Our client is sending us .mov Quicktimes with Avid DNxHD Codec.
It wouldn't play on our Macbook Pros, but no problem, I downloaded the codec and it ran fine afterwards.
Not having the same luck with our Power Mac G5 Workstation.
It runs on Mac OS Leopard 10.5.8.
Downloaded the codec for Leopard from this link:
    http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=263545
    Nothing changed.
I play the file and all I see is black as the timeline runs.
How should I fix this issue?

The Power Mac G5 does not have an Intel Processor like the newer macs do. Could that be root of issue?
It is a definite possibility. The link you posted indicated the Mac v2.1 component was compatible with OS 10.5.5 and later which would normally imply QT 7 with or without Intel CPU. However, the editing software applications do seem to restrict their use to "Intel only" Mac systems. For instance, Pro Tools v8.3 and higher are listed as "Intel Only" software. Did try the v2.01 QT codec component or look for anything older?

  • How do I get the Avid DNxHD codec as a compression option in my output settings?

Hi. When I was using a previous version of After Effects, I had several Avid DNxHD codec options listed here:
    - Render Queue
        - Output Module
            -  Format Options
                 - Compression type
Now using CS4, and I can't find any DNxHD codecs to use for exporting compositions as Quicktimes.
Avid website has free download, but I don't know how to get it to work within CS4.  Any suggestions please?

    Here's what shows up:
And the same thing with Premiere Pro CS6. Also I've checked QT's system folder, and there are some files with "Avid" in their names and I've checked "Enable encoding using legacy codecs" box in QuickTime settings.

  • Use Compressor to export to AVID DNXHD CODEC

    Hey all,
I posted this question at the CreativeCow FCP forum - and than I thought maybe its a COMPRESSOR Forum question - so here it is:
I have installed AVID CODEC PACK LE
Currently I use FCP to export to DNXHD and its working OK (but slow).
I wanted to know if it is possible for me to use COMPRESSOR to export to AVID DNXHD CODEC.
I need it because a lot of times I need to export to this codec (for AVID System that does the Promos)
And I don't want to use FCP for that because I want to keep editing While I'm converting.
If Compressor can't export to DNXHD can I use QUICKTIME TO EXPORT TO DNX HD?
    Thanks!

Create a new Quicktime Movie in Compressor. Open the Inspector window and click on the settings button next to "Video." Then click on the Compression Type pulldown menu and scroll up to the Avid section and choose "Avid DNxHD."
I've included a screen grab of what this looks like. http://www.box.net/shared/hzblfnsuu6

  • AECC2014 (Mac)を使ってQT(Avid DNxHD Codec)を読み込み.Mochaに送ると画面が真っ黒になって見れない

    AECC2014 (Mac OS10.9.4)を使ってるのですがQT(Avid DNxHD Codec)のものを読み込み、

Avid Codecs LE V.2.3.4

  • Avid DnxHD codec crashing

Everytime I try to export any clips using Avid DnxHD codec, Compressor crashes.
    Anyone have similar issues?

That is correct...Avid DnxHD is an additionally installed Codec, via Avid QuickTime Codecs LE 2.3.2
It was supported in Compressor 3.5.... The issue here is that it is No longer working under Compressor 4.0
    ...Anyone?

  • Is the TEXT OVERLAY with Avid DnX codec fixed yet?

You can't apply a Text Overlay or Watermark filter to Quicktimes using the Avid DnX codec, please tell me this is finally resolved in the new version...

Compressor won't natively supporrt DnX unless you have a thrid party plugin that does that with QTPro.  If you used a third party add-on before upgrading, check with that developer for an update.

  • Raid 0 for media or previews? Using DSLR footage with Avid codec Sequence for smart rendering

I am on a PC currently  using raid0 for media (4x 7200rp drives, read/write at 600) and exporting (no previews) to my sas 15k rpm (read/write about 180) previews/render drive.
I want to use avid codec for my sequence settings, will be doing smart rendering and exporting preview files for quicker exports.
My question, should I export to my raid0 since I will be exporting previews?  Or is it better to keep the same setup and just add an export drive?

Either would work but since the Media array is so much faster than the Render drive, the export times probably wont change much exporting to the Render drive.

  • When rotating a simple black rectangle, jagged edges are created. How can I fix this? (for web)

I have been messing with a simple black rectangle and when I transform it, jagged edges appear. This is the base for a logo for web. I have anti-alising checked in pref. The logo looks horrible and blurry/jagged on the edges even when previewed on several screens from pc to mac. Any suggestions are welcome!
p.s. this is also happening with text, that has been made an object (top of text seen in the rectangle.)

I don't see anything unusual. That's the best anti-aliasing you can possibly get. Have you seen another black on white hard edge at the same angle that looks better? When comparing raster images make sure you view all of them at screen resolution which is 100% zoom.
Obviously anti-aliasing of horizontal and vertical lines is the best followed by 45° angles and at your angle it is one of the worst because with this angle you have less pixel lines to render it on the pixel grid of the screen. Also the pixels of each monitor screen are different sizes and if you happened to be viewing it on screens with relatively larger pixels the aliasing will be more noticeable.

  • Jagged Edges on Raster Images in After Effects/Encore

I've been working on a project that uses movie files made in After Effects and then brought into Encore to create a DVD. The problem I'm having is jagged edges appearing on raster photo images - things like people's chins especially look jagged. All looks ok on my monitor/computer, but once I watch it on my flat screen TV I get these jagged edges. I've tried transcoding Progressive in Encore but that didn't help.
    Someone please help me!!!

Yes, it's MPEG compression, and no, there is no "flip a switch" magic cure. Probably what happens is:
    - you are not suitably color correcting your image, resulting in oversaturationthat's bad for compression
    - you have thin lines and only slightly angled edges on the photos
    - you are not using motion blur
    - you have overcranked our TV's colors
    - the TV does some image processing/ scaling/ frame rate coversion
These ad a million other things will conribute to percception of poor video, but as I said, geerally there is no simple solution here. Compression isunavoidabl, but there are of course ways to improve the results. You should do a little reading up on this. O the AE side you may improved by choosing suitabe renderr settings, using a tiny bit of blur, enabling motion blur, chnaging the motion of the items, adjusting their colors - whichever works. Again, no geeral recipe here. Good compression is a art we all have had to learn over the years ad the best advise can't replace persoal experience.

  • Avid DNxHD files with no audio in PP CC playback

I used a Pix 240 to record an EX1r in 23.98 DNxHD 145/1080 to capture some media.
In PP CC, the files playback in the player and record windows, but without audio.  The meters move, as if they have audio, but I can't hear it.  I've checked the preferences, and everything appears fine.
I can playback R3D clips in both monitors, and I hear audio.  It appears to be an AVID DNxHD file issue.
Any ideas on how to rectify this?
    Thanks,
    Curt

    Robodog,
Thanks for the tips.  I'm not sure what happened... I had rebooted a few times trying to fix the issue... nothing seemed to work.  I'm a PC, Win 7 Pro~64 bit, 64GB of RAM, SR2 Mobo, Nvidia 6000, Red Rocket,
I had checked the mapping, seemed good to go!
I got so frustrated after a few hours of trying to get it to work, I just shut the system down and went to bed.  I booted this morning and everything just worked.  No idea what happened there.
I do appreciate your efforts!  Thanks!

  • Trouble with Avid Codecs

To start, I'm using Mac OSX Mavericks.  I've got two different machines, a Macbook Pro, and an iMac. On my iMac, when I import clips that were captured on a Blackmagic Hyperdeck with the Avid DNxHD codec, I get no audio. I can open these clips in prelude, speedgrade, even in Premiere Pro CS6, and get audio, all on the iMac. I can even ipmort the clips into Premiere pro CC on my Macbook pro, and I've got audio. I've uninstalled Premiere pro CC twice, and reinstalled. I've removed the preferences folder. I've uninstalled the codecs and reinstalled.  I've tried three different versions of the codecs from Avid's web site. What am I missing?

    Hi mboogman,
    Welcome to the forums.
Have you tried to update the blackmagic drivers? Also, please check the audio hardware preferences and playback whether blackmagic is available as one of the componets or not.

  • Avid DNxHD not working with Color?

QT HD Avid DNxHD Codec working with FCP but not with Color ? Help

I will not contest the workability of AVID. I will express skepticism about the welcome an AVID codec might receive on a Mac platform, and less so on a platform/codec-specific app like COLOR.
I understand that Automatic Duck's "Use existing media" now works better with at least DV material for importing OMF into FCP. That's probably a big thing considering all the various quirks that have to be bridged. We know for sure that only a select few formats are welcome for import to COLOR, and even fewer for export. Heck, it goes berserk if you let a tif or jpg slip by. It doesn't even like the LiveType and Motion decompressor exports so much, so although it might work in FCP is NO guarantee at all that the media will be greeted warmly elsewhere.
