Black Macbook 13", New Keyboard?

Hello,
Where can I get a new top cover (I need to replace the keyboard) for my 13" Black Macbook?
Is it possible to fit a white Macbook keyboard? I'd assume so, but am worried there might be some cunning differences to prevent my doing so...

I cannot be certain if there are enough differences between the white and black Macbook keyboards for it not to work, but I recently replaced my white Macbook's keyboard/topcase from a version 1 keyboard (old style with open apple symbol on command key) accidentally to a version 2 keyboard (no open apple symbol and function keys rearranged). The eBay seller was told to send me a version 1 keyboard but sent me a version 2 anyway and it works quite well even though the new keyboard is supposedly from a 2008 Macbook as opposed to my mid 2007 Macbook. Perhaps its more to do with the OS recognizing the hardware than whether the hardware is compatible with the logic board if that makes any sense. I have a feeling pretty much any white/black Macbook keyboard will work with any white/black Macbook...but that's only a hunch.
As for where to get one...eBay sellers list them daily for a range of prices. Mine was used but in great condition for $30 and free shipping, but some sell new ones for maybe $20 more. Just gotta look around.

  • Make my Black Macbook like new

I have a black macbook that I would like to make to function like a new Mac. Hard wear wise it's in great condition; screen, shell, ports, etc. one would think its brand new if it wasn't turned on. I have no interest in buying a new one, as nothing sense has been any bit appealing.
Basically I'm wondering where I can take it to get it working like a new Mac? I'm willing to pay the price as long as it's shell stays the same. I've looked into doing it myself, but I'm not at all tech savvy and would most likely break something.
Any and all advice is welcome. (Just don't tell me to buy a new one, as everything that has come out in the past years has been subpar to my liking.)
    Thanks.

than it is from New England region. Only
a few hours drive; by UPS or USPS a

few days there, maybe a week from here.
So a company such as wegenermedia.com
can help you if you want a restored status
    where they test & fix whatever is wrong;
while inside there, if the hard disk drive is
old, worn, or original (old/worn) they can
upgrade or replace it. I suggested places

Given the computer is an old model regardless

  • Black MacBook case "pealing" - warranty question

I purchased a Black Macbook in New Zealand in November last year. It is still under warranty until November this year. The top case has just started 'pealing' where the right palm rest is - see:
    http://picasaweb.google.com/masaclaw/MacbookIssues/photo
Is this fault covered by the warranty?
I am currently traveling overseas and wont be able to take the macbook in to be repaired until January - this is after the warranty period expires. Is there a way for me to lodge the fault and extend the warranty to cover this (without purchasing the additional AppleCare) or is my only option to find a local Mac support company to fix the issue?
I am in France and don't speak French and am not staying in one spot for longer than a few days at a time so I'm hoping I am able to.
    Any help appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Tom

I think this is a fault of Apple's, unless you dropped the computer or something to that nature, which I'm sure you would have specified.
And yes, your only options are either to find a local Apple store on your travels and get it fixed before your warranty expires in November. Or, you could purchase AppleCare and have your MacBook be extended for three years.
    You should get this fixed.

I have a black MacBook from 2008 and tried downloading snow leopard 10.6. It told me I had to restart my computer. However once I restarted my MacBook my touchpad and keyboard were not working so I am unable to sign in. I have no idea what the problem is

You cannot download the upgrade to Snow Leopard.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Black MacBook keyboard jumps back spaces or up a few lines

My 2008 Black MacBook (MacBook 4,1) has developed an annoying tendency recently: whenever I am typing, and it matters not whether it is in Mozilla Thunderbird, LibreOffice or posts in Facebook, etc., it jumps back several spaces or up a few lines. At first I thought that perhaps the position of my hands while typing were touching something that causes this, but I can't figure out what would do that (as in what keyboard command would cause this). So, I am thinking itis something wrong with the BlackBook's keyboard itself.
    Any hints as to what?
    Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're all users here.
It could be caused by a bulging battery pack. When the battery is bulging noticeably, it can distort the keyboard/trackpad topcase enough to cause the keyboard/trackpad problem you describe.
To check, turn the computer off and remove the battery, then connect to the power adapter, and turn it back on. If the problem goes away with the battery removed, you need a new battery. Note that it can be difficult or impossible to re-install a badly-distorted battery.
While you can use the computer without a battery until you get a replacement, you might notice a decrease in performance. http://techcrunch.com/2008/11/22/macbook-performance-drops-37-percent-without-ba ttery-installed/
Replacement batteries are $129 from Apple, and less expensive alternatives are available from other sources. There are many threads in Apple Support Communities that list lower-cost sources. In my own experience, when the original battery on my mid-2007 MacBook began to bulge a bit after 4 years and 500+ cycles, without causing the keyboard problem, I replaced it with a lower-cost alternative. The replacement swelled enough to cause the erratic keyboard problem within 18 months and less than 200 cycles. So now I'm back to an Apple replacement.

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.

  • How I copied all my Outlook Express data to my new Black MacBook

    Hi there!
I just made the jump to the "Apple side" buying a shiny new Black Macbook, and having already got a lot of usefull information from this forum, I just wanted to give my little contribution...
Here follows how I managed to copy ALL my Microsoft Outlook Express messages, settings and accounts from my "old" PC to my new MacBook:
I just installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my PC and let the automated "import" function transfer all my data from Outlook Express; then I installed Thunderbird to the MacBook too (skipping all the setup procedures that start at the first run of the program).
Then, on the "PC side", I located the folder where all the Thunderbird profile data is stored: it is something like "xxxxxxxx.default" (in my case "voakmfhs.default") and is stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles"
So it was just a matter of copying all the "xxxxxxxx.default" folder from the PC to the Mac (on the "Mac side" just search for the "Thunderbird" folder and then open the "Profiles" subfolder where you have to copy all the stuff)
The last step is to edit the Thunderbird "profiles.ini" file on the Mac, replacing the name of default folder that was assigned during the installation (which you can safely delete), with the name of the one copied from the PC...
For any further question, feel free to ask
Hope this is of some help!
    Ciao for now
    Sergio

Might be RAM related if the above tip describes what happened.

  • Macbook & the new Apple Keyboard

    Hey all...
I recently started using an external monitor and keyboard for my Macbook at the office. Been doing a lot more design work lately and the 13" wasn't cutting it. I made the switch right when the new aluminum keyboard came out.
    Here's the problem...
The new keyboard is amazing and the features are great...but when I leave the office and use my Macbook without the external keyboard - all the shortcuts are screwed up.
I'm wondering if there is a way for me to have the Macbook keep 2 settings - 1 for when I'm using the external keyboard and another for when I'm not (without having to reprogram the shortcuts every single time I switch).
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Andy

    Hey...
The things I'm needing the most are the expose and dashboard buttons. Right now, there's only one button for expose on the new keyboard (the see all windows button) and it's <fn>+<f3> - on the Macbook it's just <f9>...but <f9> on the new keyboard is the fastforward button for iTunes.
I can assign <f13> - <f19> for just about anything on the new keyboard, but the Macbook only goes to <f12>.
If I set my expose keys on the new keyboard to be the same as that of the Macbook, I lose the iTunes functionality.
Does that clear things up at all? I'm starting to confuse myself.

about 5 or 6 months i got a black macbook and i have 3 years of warranty but the motherboard crashed on me out of the random so im just wondering can take my old black macbook for a new macbook pro and pay the difference?

Apple will typically allow a return within 14 days of your purchase... which is basically what you would need to do if you wanted to make an exchange. You would basically return your old one and buy the new one. As the previous poster mentioned, at this point, you won't be able to achieve this working directly with Apple. As your machine is 5-6 months old, there is wear to consider... it is basically no longer a new machine. Apple stores are not equipped to "appraise" used machines.

Try a smc, then the pram reset. If still no joy, you might want to take it to the Apple store. Also look in the headphone jack and see if there is a red light on.

As always do a back up first.

  • New MacBook OR Black MacBook

I was about to buy my first mac(black macbook) when i heard the new ones were launched(in India they arrive after 3 weeks from now). I am really confused to take a call on if i should go with my original plan of getting the black or wait for a month and get the all new one which will be a lil. more expensive.
Looking for some opinions and feedback from you guys.
    Thanks.

Take a close look at the specs for both and see if there's anything in the new MacBook that you really need. Pay close attention to the CPU (same in both), RAM (same in both), no Firewire in the new MacBook, no trackpad button if you prefer to have one (like I do, but now I use an HP Bluetooth mouse most of the time so it's less of a problem for me), hard drive and RAM can easily be upgraded. They say the LED screen is better than the LCD but I am reserving judgement until I can see one in use outside of a showroom. The cost of the new MacBook alone would be enough to put me off, and it only comes in one colour - boring metallic grey. The Intel X3100 graphics set in the white and black MacBook models is actually very capable, and can run a number of recent games quite well, just don't expect to be running Oblivion at 1920x1440 with full-scene anti-aliasing
Though the CPU clock speed and the Ram "amount" are the same, the two are actually different.
The CPU of the AL has a 1066 front side bus and the Ram is DDR3 1066 RAM
Though the X3100 graphics card is "capable" the newer 9400 in benchmark testing got framerates of 30+ compared to only around 8 frames on the previous MacBooks.
The only nice thing about the LED screens in my opinion is faster on and less power consuming. I saw a new MacBook today and I didn't see any of the contrast/ugliness that others have posted, but I'm not overly critical of such things in general and of course the showroom can be quite misleading.
If you have the money to spend and don't need Firewire, I would get the AL MacBook personally. The Black MacBook of course will not disappoint it's an awesome machine.
I thought the new trackpad was quite smart personally. It was very natural to click at the bottom as if the button was really there, though I have become more a tap to click kind of person. The new gestures for the trackpad are pure genius in my opinion as well. The four finger app switcher is cool.
But I only played with it for like 20 minutes.
    Good luck.

  • New black MacBook, USB issue

I have a friend (no, seriously) that just made "the switch" and moved to a black MacBook at my urging. It's brand new, but from day 1 he has been complaining that anything he plugs into one of the USB ports keeps dropping out randomly. He said he found on some website that this is just a MacBook issue and that the solution is to use the other port. Then today he said the other one intermittently started drop out too.
I say it's broken, he should send it back and get a new one... but I don't know enough about the MacBooks to tell him that it's a unique issue.
Anyone else seen anything like this?

    Hey guys.
I use Scratch Live also, and BTW its Serato.
anyway, this is quite the problem over at Scratchlive.net
Many of the users have run tests and have come to the conclusion that when the SL1 box is plugged into the "bad" port, that being the USB closest to the firewire cable, it is somehow linked to the track pad, and therefore goes into some kind of sleep mode. If you leave the trackpad alone, when the SL1 box is plugged into that port, let it sit for 20 seconds, then touch the pad you will get a drop out.
This is the case for both the MBP, and the MB.
The funny thing is...when we run Scratch Live in windows XP, using bootcamp...the problem is not there, WHAT-SO-EVER.
So this is obviously a Mac OSX issue.
The problem still persists and I've got the Developer versions of 10.4.9, and still the problem is there.
This isnt just a case for Scratch Live either, it happens with ANY audio interface that is plugged into the bad port.
I.E. Mbox, Scratch Live...anything USB audio interface related.
So hope this helps and check the link...its a big problem in this DJ community.
    lol.
    help?
any Developers out there that can write a code that prevents the track pad going into sleep mode?
