Black MacBook (early '07) Hard Drive problems?
I appears that my hard drive is taking a dump. My desktop will stay lit, but the icons and finder as well as the top bar just start flashing an everything from that point is inaccessible. Just over two years now. battery is great still plenty of disc space left. Time for a new Hard Drive?
I was told that Newegg is a good place to start. Should i go for the same specs as it had to begin with, 120 GB @5400 rpm? Or shall i upgrade? WHat brands am i looking for? I jus' need help. thanks everyone.

It's probably a safe bet to say that it's time for a new HD. Typically, when the S.M.A.R.T. status is labeled as such it would indicate that there is something wrong with drive. More often then not, it's a mechanical failure as the S.M.A.R.T. status is not designed to detect software/data corruption.
What's the status of the data on the HD, is it backed up somewhere? I'd recommend if possible to try and access (and thus transfer off) as much as data possible. Although I've seen a few cases of a false positive with S.M.A.R.T. status (the HD in Mac Mini has been "failing" for almost a year now), a drive replacement will no doubt save you a lot of headache and frustration later on.

MacBook Pro 15" Hard Drive Problem.
Hello ... I have a MacBook Pro 15" which recently died on me. When I turn it on, on the "gray" screen there is a blinking folder in the middle. Snow Leopard never boots up. I thought that my hard drive died, bought a new one for it. Replaced it and when I boot it from leopard to install it on the new drive, when I was asked to select the volume in which I want it the new OS, there was no drive that I could select. Therefore, I am stuck in that step. I used an external enclosure to see if the drive was faulty, but it came up on my iMac. I also placed the old hard drive on an enclosure, and it came up fine on the iMac. So, looks like it is not a hard drive problem, any ideas on what I can try or might be ... ? Thanks!!
Did you use the disk utility on the Snow Leopard installation disk to partition the new disk. If you don't do this the installer does not see the disk.

My 13" black macbook keeps having hard drive failures -- I'm on my third hard drive
The first one lasted 2 years. It failed within the special warranty period that Apple offered because so many computers like mine were also having hard drive failures. I didn't know about the special warranty they were offering, even after contacting Apple and telling them about my problem and describing the exact symptoms of the problem they were fixing for free. Thank you for that. So I went to a local store and paid ~$130 to have it fixed. This time I was paranoid about not moving my computer, and if I did have to move it, make sure it was off. Then without warning, it happens again less than 2 years later. I would expect a computer hard drive, especially one that is taken care of as well as mine, to last more ~20 months (less than 2 years) TWICE. It seems that this is a problem not with the hard drive but with the computer. I'm pretty upset that hard drives are now basically disposable -- I'm afraid to use it now unless absolutely necessary, otherwise I'll feel like I'm making its clock tick closer and closer to the next time it fries the hard drive. For as much as I paid for this computer, I expect a bit more than that. Unless there is some magical fix to this, I can safely say my next computer will be a super cheap net book.
Does anyone have any more info on this, any ways to avoid frying more hard drives, or has any one had any luck resolving this issue with Apple? I greatly appreciate any help. Every drive has an MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) rating in the thousands of hours, but that is an average (half will fail sooner, half will fail later) not an absolute longevity guarantee.
I've used an original (Apple-OEM Fujitsu 120Gb 5400rpm), a Hitachi 320Gb 7200rpm, and currently a Seagate 500Gb 7200rpm drive in my mid-2007 MacBook. I replaced the 120Gb because I was running out of room. I still use it as an external backup for certain files. The 320Gb Hitachi failed after less than two years, but had a three-year-warranty, so it was replaced at no charge. I'm using the Hitachi replacement externally to clone my current drive in order to test OS X and software updates before installing them 'for keeps' on my working system.
A solid-state (SSD) drive might be less prone to mechanical failure, but that is still no absolute guarantee that it won't EVER fail, and SSD's are still about double or more the cost of mechanical drives.
The best thing is to simply be prepared for the eventual failure with a strategy for frequent and reliable backups. -
I've used this MacBook for a few years without any issues. It has always had very snappy response and very few problems. Earlier this week, I noticed that it takes about 4 minutes to boot up now as opposed to the 30 seconds it used to take just a week ago. Once running, Safari also tends to be unresponsive at times and slow to load. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that during boot up, I can HEAR the hard drive give off some "clicks" and faint "beeps" (for lack of a more technical description). In my experience with Windows machines, this is often a sign of hard drive problems.
With Vista, I can run a CHKDSK and fix the drive by taking the bad sectors out of the mix. I am trying to figure out how to best diagnose and repair my drive on this Mac. I tried booting from the Snow Leopard DVD and running Disk Utility/First Aid to find the problem, but this utility reports that everything is fine and dandy. I am not sure I agree.
Can someone tell me of a more powerful tool for the Mac that will fully diagnose any hardware or software problems on this machine so I can get it back to tip top performance. Is there a diagnostic utility provided by Apple? Other utilities built in to Snow Leopard? Third party applications?
As I have never had problems with a Mac before, I am in uncharted waters with regard to diagnostics so if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

You have to determine what version of Leopard shipped with your Mac. It might say on the disk. If not, put in the leopard disk and see which version it is. As stated in the link I gave you.........

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location. Select the location of your on external hard drive.

The recycle program makes it easier for you to trade in your old Mac and buy a new one. Apple has a partner that will take the old one and give you a gift card for the value -- if your old Mac is in pretty good condition and doen't have problems (passes the diagnostics).

If you change your apple password how do you notifly icloud to resync everything? Forgot my apple password, had to change it due to hard drive problem on my iphone 4 which had to be totally erased then rebouted and now works but cannot download from my computer/icloud due to password change. I just bought a new Samsung 840 Evo 250gb SSD HDD for my early 2011 macbook pro because the "professionals" I took it to said my hard drive had failed. I have searched the internet for hours looking for a solution to my problem, yet I can't seem to find my answer.
Problem: I have already installed my hard drive manually, yet I can't seem to get it to show up on Disk Utility. I want to format it to work with my macbook but the hard drive does not even show up on the list in Disk Utility. Is there anyone who can help me through this?

My MacBook Pro's hard drive is about full, can I move a lot of the data to my 3 TB Time Capsule?
I have a late 2011 MacBook Pro 17 Inch with 750 GB of space on its hard drive. About a month and half ago I bought a 3 TB Time Capsule and I know that Time Capsule, together with Time Machine, basically takes periodic snapshots of your hard drive and will rearrange/clean/delete files on your hard drive. What I want to know is that since I'm about to run out of space on the internal hard drive can I move a good chunk of the data into the Time Capsule and free up that data on internal hard drive. Videos take up about 75% of my MacBook Pro's hard drive so video's are my biggest problem. If I can't do this with the Time Capsule I guess that's a con of the Time Capsule/Time Machine.
Thank you to anyone that answers!You should be able to do that by partitioning but then how would that data be backed up? If the Time Capsule drive fails, then all of that data is lost. I would suggest you consider an additional external HDD for redundancy unless the video files are of no importance.

MBP Hard Drive Problem (Again)
My MBP is going back to the Geniuses for a HD problem for the 3rd time tomorrow, since I bought it in July. I am confused about exactly what is happening, and I would like any advice anyone might have about salvaging any of my data.
(The first two times, I brought it in because the HD died. The first time, they told me they had replaced the HD, though they hadn't. They ran diagnostics, decided it did not need to be replaced after erasing my data, and then gave it back to me. I brought it back the next day [t died that night as I was reinstalling] and they replaced the HD in about a day.)
Everything got really slow this weekend and I had "index" and "database" problems in my mail.app (twice), and my iTunes (twice). Now, the replacement HD has disappeared when I tried to reinstall the system software/repair the disk in disk utility.
This is the chronology:
I have had this hard drive for 3 weeks, installed at the local apple store to replace my factory-installed dead hard drive.
On Friday, my mail app stopped working. After diagnosing the error message (thanks to this forum), I learned that the index file was corrupted, so I reinstalled the index.
On Saturday, my iTunes said it couldn't read my iPod, so I restored my iPod, erasing all of my data (music, calendars, contacts, important documents). I continued to get the same error message.
Today, I restored it again, but I still couldn't get iTunes to write more than 2 gb of information (of the 20 gb of data). At that point, I decided I would have to send my iPod in for repairs and stopped trying.
8 hours later, I got an error message that said the iTunes index was corrupted. I started to put the music back in to iTunes, but the MBP kept kept freezing.
I restarted the machine and received the blinking questionmark. I put in my system installation disks to run disk utility and, if need be, reinstall my system software.
This is where it gets interesting:
Disk Utility can see the topline Disk Description and the SMART status is verified. But the name of the disk itself is wrong and the mount point says it is unmounted. The capacity is correct, but under everything from owners enabled to number of files and space available, there is just a dash.
Unlike my previous hard drive problem, there is no clunking, and the hard drive appears to be working. Disk Utility found the following: Invalid B-tree node size. The volume needs to be repaired. Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 HFS volume checked: volume needs repair. And that's it.
My questions are:
1. What is happening to my hard drive?
2. Is it dead or is there any way to fix it?
3. Is there any way to salvage my data? (Because of my iPod failure, I lost my calendars, contacts, important data from my last big back up 3 weeks ago, not to mention my carefully curated music collection. I have my documents backed up to gmail, but not my notes, which were on my iPod.)
4. Does it sound like an internal hardware problem or is it really just two bum hard drives (from two different manufacturers) in a row?

the Geniuses fixed the computer by doing a complete wipe of my hard drive.
They said that the directory error may have existed from before my last hard drive was installed, but I am not certain how such a thing could exist.
Because it was a directory error, I lost all of my data on the hard drive, but I was able to take the machine home with me within an hour. Since the erase and reinstallation, my computer is running much, much faster, and seemingly cooler, but that may just be my relief at having a working machine back. -

I am sure it is due to my error or mistake but I received a new Maxtor III touch as a replacement for my failed drive yesterday after connecting it I went to Maxtor one touch manager software that came with it and the drive did not appear in the window so then I opened disk utilities and copied my notebook hard drive over to the Maxtor ran permissions on each drive and then closed down my system ! today when I opened my Powerbook with the Maxtor on it gave me the grey screen 2x so I disconnected the Maxtor ran permissions again and everything was fine until i power up the Maxtor and Grey screen again! I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!
This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.

Click on the Desktop. From the Finder menu select Preferences. Check the boxes for what you want on your Desktop. If they are already checked, then try unchecking and rechecking.

Computer is balky random freezes across apps. Two hard drive cleans later (their scan reveals no hard drive problems) photo shop won't work at all, magic touch mouse inoperable and their diagnoses is corrupted data? Anybody heard of this?
Well, yes, data does get corrupted sometimes.
The trick is finding what data.
By 'cleaned' are you therefor meaning that the drive has been erased and the system re-installed?
Because that's the quickest way to deal with such a situation.
Back up the system first of course,
Add back 3rd party apps one at a time in case one of them is causing the problem. -
I recently had to replace my 2009 Macbook Pro's hard drive. I had the apple store upgrade the OS to Mountain Lion while it was in being repaired. I want to restore all of my old data and files. If I perform a restore from Time Machine, with a date prior to having the hard drive replaced, will it revert back to the old OS?
No, it won't revert to the prior OS X but you you may have third party apps installed that were compatible with Lion that may not be compatible with Mountain Lion.
