Black Macbook runs very hot after installing MS Office 11.5.7 update

I don't know if the two events are causally related, but my black Santa Rosa Macbook is now running scorchingly hot (74 - 85 degrees C) after I installed the MS Office 11.5.7 update tonight. Won't cool down. When turned off for twenty minutes, then re-booted, it begins to run very hot again within a minute or two, despite SMC fan control being on.
Activity monitor says a kernel task at the root level is using 160.46 gigs of real memory and 1.24 gigs of virtual memory; something called "mds" also at root is eating 43 megs of real memory and 733 megs of virtual; a "database daemon" under my user name uses only 23 megs of real memory but over a gig of virtual, and "netupdateagent" which may or may not have something to do with Intego updates uses a whopping 2.9 gigs of virtual but only 6.9 of real memory.
I have tried to copy and paste the columns below. Any advice greatly appreciated.

In Activity Monitor...click the CPU tab...at the top of that page choose 'All Processes'...are there any processes using double or even triple digit percentages?
Also is Spotlight indexing?....click the magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner...

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • MacBook Air late 2010 very hot after installing Mountain Lion? Can i back to Lion?

My MacBook Air, late 2010, is very hot and the vans are going too speedy after installing Mountain Lion. Can I deinstalling Mountain Lion and returno to Lion? What are the steps for this deinstallation? Thank you.

Technically, there is a way, but it is definitely not something I would recommend, as downgrading isn't usually supported/encouraged.
I found a website that has instructions but it clearly states it's not for the inexpert, so proceed at your own risk.  Also, I don't think you can download Lion from the AppStore anymore?

  • New 100GB 7200rpm drive in My black macbook now very hot macbook

so guys i upgraded my macbook 2.0ghz black hard drive with a 100GB 7200 rpm harddrive made from Seagate Momentus that i got from other world compter now my computer is very hot any one has the same experince

The key phrase in the barefeets review is "Assuming the factory specs are accurate" the wattage is the same. This gets into the same argument on processor power and comparing design criteria versus actual usage.
The review of the Seagate 5400.2 drive in my earlier post has actual power measurements and it shows the 5400 drive using 3.3 watts under "Seek Normal". I think the factory specs are used for power supply sizing actual power consumption is difficult to find. The review that I reference here is for one sample drive and may not reflect the performance of all the drives. I just don't know. On average a 7200 rpm drive uses more power than a 5400 rpm drive or a 4200 rpm drive.
I bought a 5400 rpm Samsung drive for my wife's Tibook. It ran hotter than the original 4200 rpm drive and she had me remove it.
Unfortunately there is just not as much information on the internet on real usage of 2.5" drives. The web site Storage Review does a pretty good job with 3.5" drives but does not really cover many 2.5" drives.

  • Worried: Found my retina MacBook running super-hot after being in my bag for hours

    Hi all
Just a bit worried about my new rMBP (2.6GHz, 16GB RAM). I put it to sleep by closing the lid at work, then putting it into a very well insulated padded sleeve, in my bag. I then went to the doctor and came back 2 hours later.
I opened by bag, first I found it strange that my whole bag was really hot! like it had been next to a radiator.
Then I realized it was my MacBook. I opened up the sleeve and it was running full throttle, the fans going like crazy, and the whole thing was so hot I could barely touch it. There was a 'warm' smell, I'm hoping not burning as such, but it had a distinct hot smell to it. Unsurprisingly the screen was blank (it had crashed or something) as the whole thing was clearly suffocating to death. I turned the whole thing off manually and waited for it to cool.
I've got it up and running again, but I'm a bit worried that I've damaged the processor or similar. I've no idea why it woke itself from sleep and why it was running so heavily. I can't imagine it's good for the machine to be running so hot in my bag with no ventilation whatsoever.
I might have to resort to shutting the machine down fully before packing away now, which isn't very convenient, but seeing as there is no sleep LED indicator on the new rMBP, it's not possible to see whether the machine is properly shut down.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is my rMPB defective or might I have damaged my machine?
    Thanks
    K

    sanjampet's advice is entirely correct.
Here's what happens with overheated machines like yours; monitoring can't hurt. Load a free program like iStat to keep track of the health of your fans. Any damage, if any, would be more long-term, resulting from weakened solder. It's impossible to know what might happen with this computer, since it's a first generation MBPr.
My immediate question is this: what caused your machine to switch on at full throttle? If it happened once, there's a good chance it could again.

Good brand and a little cheaper:

  • Numbers runs very slowly after installing Yosemite ?

    iMac (20-inch, Early 2008)
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
After installing Yosemite, all my Numbers spreadsheets respond only very slowly (e.g several seconds to click open a cell or scroll to a new line).
I have updated to OS X 10.10.2 with no improvement. Has anyone else had this? Can anybody tell me how to fix it?

I have stumbled on the apparent solution to the slow Numbers issue. When I upgraded old Numbers files to the latest issue of software, and opened them from the hard drive (instead of via the original dock icon) everything worked normally, and the new dock icon [ 3.5.2 (2118) ] remained in the dock when I dropped the old one into the Trash (removing it from the dock). Incidentally, I noticed that for each Numbers file that I upgraded, the file size was roughly doubled.
Being a non-technical user I was a bit surprised that the upgrade to Yosemite didn't take care of this sort of issue, but perhaps there's someone in the community who can enlighten me ?

  • Macbook running very slow after Archive & Install

Hey everyone, I needed to reinstall my OS the other day so I used archive and install because I needed to save Ableton Live files. My problem is that now the computer runs horribly slow. Any application I open takes about 20 seconds to load and I get the rainbow 'wait' wheel constantly. I am hoping all I need to do is repair my permissions but i would like some better advice
    Thanks.

How much free disk capacity do you have? You need to maintain a minimum of 15% of total disk capacity as contiguous free space. Check to be sure that everything is in place, then delete the Previous Systems Folder. That should instantly free up a bunch of space.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro very slow after installing Mountain Lion 10.8.5. - Solutions?

    Hello, hello
After waiting quite a while - I paid the relatively small amount, and got myselves a new OS.
But I am very disappointed of the speed - I see that this also was a problem with OS Lion?
Please assist me. Perhaps others have this problem as well?
    Some info:
    - 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7 processor
    - 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Also
    - Sometimes I run the Parallels Desktop 6 and 9 software, does this affect specs of the new OS?
Hope to hear from you guys.
    Sincerely,
    Harald

With only 4GB of RAM, how much do you have devoted to the virtual machine running under Parallels? Even if it's a small amount, it's going to make page outs and swaps used very high. From my perspective, 8GB of RAM is the 'sweet spot' for running Mountain Lion.
I'm assuming that you've a 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pro? If so, you can speed things up by installing the maximum 8GB of RAM. Go RAM shopping at Crucial or OWC.
Other than upgrading your RAM, the only thing that you can do to speed up your machine is to install a SSD. You can also check the SSDs at Crucial and OWC and decide if one is right for you.

  • My MacBook Runs Very Slow After BootCamp.

Today i decided to install a windows partition using bootcamp. At first I didnt'g give the partition enough memory so i deleted it and partitoned it once again. After going back to OSX i noticed a huge difference in performance. Everything ran incredibly slow and took a long time to process even the simplest tasks. Thinking it would solve the problem i once again deleted the windows partition. I rebooted and things got a little better. I then tried to repair disk permissions and again had little results. Whenevr i have itunes open or try to open it, it causes big problems and everything slows down. The same thing happens anytime i try to play an audio file on any player. However if i keep itunes closed and don't try to play any music things run decently, still slow but decent. But in order for things to stay this way i have to constantly clean my RAM up. If i don't i get left with around 10 MB of RAM. I checked the activity monitor and seems that coreadiod is using up the RAM. The process is staying around 115% of CPU usage. This happens even when everything is closed and i am idle at my desktop.
This is a big problem and i can never have more than about 3GB of RAM free and even then it quickly drops until i'm left with just MB's. My MAcBook is a 15 in. retina MBP with 8 GB of RAM. Before the bootcamp OSX always ran super fast with no problems. There is only one thing i can think of that caused this problem. In my windows partition i downloaded various media players including itunes and winamp. I was trying to basically share my itunes library on the OSX partition over to the windows. To do this i changed the itunes media folder location to the one on the OSX partition. This did not accomplish my task but it did keep that file directory. Also with windows media player i added the same itunes media folder to the list of folders for WMP to access, this also did not work. In winamp i added the same folder and it read my music no problem. I think this is where the problem lies seeing as itunes and playing audio files seems to leave my computer almost unfuctional. The odd part is it doesn't even have to be an audio file in my itunes library, a file completely seperate that i didnt try to add to the windows partition causes the same issue.
I'm not too knowlwedgable on this so i have no idea what else to try. Any help or any suggestions as to what to do would be greatly appreciated.

After looking into the problem more, it turns out everything works great until I open itunes. itunes does not open and if i force quit it, that is when coreaudiod starts taking all of my RAM.

  • HP Truevision HD running very slow after installing windows 8

    Hi.
I have hp 1000-1140TU Notebook PC.
It came with Windows7-Home Basic and CyberLink YouCam worked smooth on it.
Since i've installed windows8, and installed Cyberlink YouCam for windows8, my webcam is running really slow! There is too much lag. Please help?

    Hi,
Did you verify that all of the required drivers were installed after the Win8 install was complete?
You can check that by clicking on the search charm and then typing in Device Manager and clicking on the device manager icon that appears.
    Best regards,

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

  • MacBook Pro mid-2012 running very slowly after upgrade to Yosemite

    Problem description:
MacBook Pro mid-2012 - installed Yosemite, and the system now crawls. Webpages have very delayed responses, can take 30+ seconds to react to typing or selection. I turned off FileVault, that did not appear to help. Emptied the trash, removed some obsolete fonts. Any help for what else to try would be much appreciated.
