Black Macbook, super drive fail = sad day. need advice, thanks

Hi there,
I have recently confirmed with 90% certainty that my superdrive has failed after 14 months (meaning no more warranty <sad />). I have tried burning CDs and DVDs. CDs burn fine, DVDs will not burn. they error out within seconds of starting the burn with an unknown error via disk util and finder, toast etc. i have reset PRAM, dusted unit, etc etc. the one thing i have not tried is different media. I do not suspect this to be issue as this unit has been able to use this media previously. I am not ruling this solution out, however to me it seems unlikely.
This brings me to my point. I am looking at replacement superdrives and they are a touch more than i wish to spend.
Will any slot load drive do the trick or does it have to be an apple specific part? New egg has slot load drives for as little as $40, superdrives range from 80-200 dependent on where you look.
Thanks for the insight!

You need the 9.5mm height drive for the MacBook. You can get them for about $65 on eBay.

  • Super drive failed

I am trying to burn my photos to a DVD from my mac book 10.8.5 When it starts to burn the disk is ejected and the message "burn failed Super drive failed didn't respond properly" Does anyone know what could be wrong or what I can do to fix this?
I am trying to take some photos off the computer and store them maybe there is a better way to do this.....

First you might try a different brand of disc, sometimes macs can be picky about DVDs.
You also might try resetting the PRAM
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Finally if your SuperDrive  has indeed failed, mine did, you could either use an external hard drive to move your photos to or purchase an inexpensive USB DVD burner, par tally any brand will work.

  • IPhoto '11- super drive failed.  It won't burn to disc.

iPhoto '11 won't burn to disc...says super drive failed.  It goes through preparing to burn and then, immediately shows "finished" and spits out the disc.  I had just finished burning another successfully.  I talked with apple and we repaired permissions for iPhoto.  It worked fine during the test, but didn't after that.
    Thanks for any help.
    Sheila

Yes.  Successfully burned to a disc.  Not only is it doing that from the top tool bar menu, but the information it shows at the bottom of the screen (MG for the burn and how full the disc is) is not accurate.  The iPhoto info shows 3.7 MG for the pictures selected, but the burn info at the bottom shows some other amount and says not enough space on the disc.  And I'm using a 4.7MG DVD!  So, now, I'm just making a burn file on my desktop and burning the disc from there.  It works fine.  However, I'd still like my iPhoto program to be working the way it's supposed to, so I can use it that way.

  • Black MacBook hard drive and RAM upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my black MacBook- 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I would like to increase the RAM - (currently have 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) and would like to put in a new hard drive -( currently have 150 GB) I am wondering what hardware to get.
I think I would like to increase the RAM to 4GB and the HD to 500 GB. anyone have strong opinions on increased memory and/or hard drive? There seems to be enough info out there on the actual upgrade process, but am not sure what to actually buy for this upgrade.
    thanks

  • Macbook hard drive fail....I think?

I have a Macbook that when booted just displayed a folder icon. Thru searching I believed the hard drive failed.
80gb drive fails "verify disk" so I ran "repair disk". It says it repairs but always fails again on verify.
So I purchased a new hard drive (500 gb) Installed it and when I tried to partion it it appears as a 3.6 TB drive??????  So I returned the drive and got another only to have the same issue?
Is it the drive? Some other part? Please help?
    Thanks!

What is it you need - Windows installer disc or something else?  Your question is unclear.  Could you be more specific?

  • Mac Book Air Super Drive fails to respond

The external Super Drive stopped responding today. I have tried the drive on another computer and that one doesn't see the drive either. Is there a way to manually eject a disk that is in this drive?

Have a look and see if the drive is appearing in the system profiler as a USB device. My original superdrive was faulty out the box, and while it was showing up in the system profiler, it wasn't mounting, nor visible in the filesystem, nevermind in the finder window.
The drive would accept a disk, and I could hear it spin up, but nothing happened, and the eject button didn't work.
If I remember correctly, I found restarting the macbook with the drive attached forced it to eject the disk.
I took the superdrive into my local Apple store (Cambridge, UK), and they replaced it there and then.
    Hope this helps.

  • Hard drive failed, now I need to re-purchase iTune's library

My father's hard drive failed and now his iTune's library is gone. I have two questions.
    1. How can I buy a list of songs from the iTune's music store? I want to avoid re-purchasing individual songs and albums; it will take forever.
    2. Is there a valid way to recover the songs that are on his iPod nano? This is only a partrial solution if it can get done.
Thank you in advance for any insight.

If he still has the library on his Nano, hope is not lost. There are programs that will allow you to copy from the iPod. I've heard of Yamipod and iPodRip. You could Google those and give it a try. Not sure if they work on Nano, but I would think so.

  • Macbook Combo Drive fails

I have an out of warranty Macbook and it seems that the combo drive has failed. It will spin briefly and then spit out the disk including the original install disks that came with the MB.
Is their any at-home troubleshooting I can try before taking it in to the Genius Bar to see what they can do?

    Hi Tamara,
Unfortunately, there's very little in the way of troubleshooting for a failed/failing optical drive. There isn't any software level tweaks and any hardware ones out there would more than likely involve opening the hood up. I've seen of some very limited scenarios that using one of those "cleaning" discs actually works. Unsure, though, how good those really are for most cases.
Regarding OOW pricing, through the store, inquire at the retail store you choose if the "in-store" repair is cheaper than the OOW flat repair depot repair. Might be able to save yourself a few bucks.

  • Macbook super drive reads ok but won't burn cd- noisy

my macbook is 2 months old. it reads cd's and dvd's just fine.
but i tried to burn an audio cd and it gets stuck in the initializing mode
and then makes this awful sound. it does not eject the disc. i have to quit the burn process and then eject the disc. i have tried using different brands of discs,
all that seem to work fine in an older ibook i have.
    is this drive defective?

I'm getting the same issue. What somebody else on these boards referred to as a "coffee grinder" noise when burning a CD-R. All I have right now is a stack of Verbatim 52x CD-Rs, and some work and some don't (the ratio is about 1:1). I need to find other media to try out.
I've never had this issue before in the year that I've owned my MacBook, and I've burned many, MANY discs.

  • My drive failed and I need to install CS6 to a new drive letter

Every time I try to reinstall CS6 the installer selects the old location, which is not there and so it has zero space.
    Install fails.
Installer does not allow me to change the location.
The location of the temporary files is ok. I changed that with no problem, but after the extracting and the actual installation, the install location is unchangeable and wrong.
    how can I change it?

It seems like the installer is still picking up traces of the product that were installed earlier. Please try the following two links and suggest if that worked or not.
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
"Error 1327 - Invalid Drive [drive letter here]" When Installing Acrobat, Photoshop Elements, or CS3 Suite

I had my photos recovered and put on a new external drive. How do I re-map lightroom to find the photos on the new drive?

  • TS1389 I have a Windows 7 computer.  When my MacBook hard drive failed, I purchased a PC.  I have 100 iTunes songs that were purchased that will not play on my new computer.  I completed each of the recommended steps in this article and the songs don't pl

Apparently, this issue is a common one.  I have also tried importing songs from an iTunes on an old pc I no longer use.  I am still prompted to authorize my computer when I attempt to play 100 different songs.  After entering my password, I receive the message that the computer is already authorized.  How can I resolve this issue?  I previously contacted Apple and they were unable to assist me in resolving the issue.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" Battery Life - Need Advice

Hi. I bought my first ever Macbook Pro Retina 13" a few days ago. I am mainly going to be using it for college work, listening to music and watching youtube videos in my spare time. And browsing the net of course.
I was wondering what is the BEST way to charge my laptop in order for me being able to use it for a long time when its not plugged in? Do I let the battery go all the way to 1%? I did that the first two times and I am worried because I've heard its bad. Or do I let the battery drop to about 20% EVERY TIME and then charge it? Or do I charge it whenever I need to and only let the battery drop to about 20% a few times a month? I am really confused. Ive been on many different forums etc and everyone is saying something different. As I said, this is my first macbook and I don't want to ruin the battery life.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Super Drive, upgrade to 10.4, memory, software?

    I have a 700MHz eMac running 10.3.9.
I know if I want to upgrade to 10.4 I have to max my memory and install a Super drive then try to find the 10.4 disks for sale.
My question is, will I need some new software to run, recognize or whatever is need ed the newly installed Super drive?
But then, maybe trying to upgrade this soon-to-be 8 years old computer is a waste of money?

You don't necessarily need a super drive. You just need a disc drive that will read CDs & DVDs. A combo drive will read CDs & DVDs + burn CDs. A super drive will read CDs & DVDs + burn CDs & DVDs.
Tiger install DVDs are in short supply. Tiger is no longer available at the Apple Store *but may be available for $129 by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753)*. For other sources, do a Google search for MA453Z/A (10.4.6), MA190Z/A (10.4.3) and M9639Z/A (10.4) . Also look on eBay. Be sure & buy a retail version (black with silver X) and not a model specific version (gray) (See Can I use another Mac's system restore disc on my Mac? ). Expect to pay (possibly a lot) more than the Apple list price of $129.
Also check these web stores: http://www.lacomputercompany.com/cgi-bin/rpcart/index.cgi?command=dispitem&type= sku&sku=19521 http://www.allmac.com/shop/index.php?cPath=5_10003
Possible Alternative if you are currently using Panther 10.3 – Do a Google search for Tiger 10.4 Upgrade DVD . It will upgrade your 10.3 to 10.4, but it doesn’t contain the full retail Tiger installer. Should be cheaper than the retail Tiger install DVD.
After you install the base 10.4.x, update to the final Tiger version 10.4.11. Here's the link for the 10.4.11 combo update http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Look at this link Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Installing Software Support Page
    http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/
You can also download the Tiger Installation and Setup Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/TigerInstall_SetupGuide.pdf
When you upgrade the OS, do it via Archive & Install. See About the Archive and Install feature http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings. Also, repair permissions before and after the install.
