Black Macbook Video Distortion:  WazuP???

I have a black MacBook with the 2.4 Ghz Intel processor and an Intel GMA x3100 graphics processor and 2 gigs of ram.
Last night in Quicktime, all videos began to distort with gaudy colors, lines and panels with variated lines of blocks and just overall garbage.
By the time I turned it off, even my screensavers began the same behavior...
I have a good friend with the same computer with similar symptoms which Apple had said, had its graphics card go bad. They repaired it and just returned it saying that even though it was out of warranty they would cover it and otherwise it would have cost him 650 dollars.. Good for Apple.
I opened mine up, removed my ram and the contacts were completely covered with a waxy, white film. I cleaned the contacts, put the ram back in and the video problem has gone away.
Any thoughts about this being a common problem or if the distortion can be expected to come back........... or other insights about the dirty ram?
Thanks

Welcome to the forums.
The dirty RAM was not dirty. It is a contact lubricant put on at the factory. Read the following from Apple on this.
MacBook: White substance on memory cards or slots
It may be a coincidence your problem went away at the same time.

  • Problems watching movies on iTunes -- lagging video, distorted audio

Hello. I have a black MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) and iTunes 9.0.2, and I'm having some problems. It's been going on for a few weeks now, and is worse some days than others, but the overall trend has been downward, so I wanted to try to get some help before it gets any worse.
The problem occurs when I try to watch movies on iTunes. I haven't had any problems with any other aspect of iTunes, although I don't really use any other aspects of iTunes at the moment besides the iTunes Store (I don't listen to music through iTunes or anything). Anyways, here's the problem:
Sometimes, when I'm watching a movie on iTunes, it will randomly (or seemingly randomly) glitch on me. I use the general term "glitch" here because the problem can manifest itself in one of a few different ways:
1.) The picture will freeze for a quick moment (less than a second usually) and skip forward real quick to catch up, and then sometimes, after it does this, it will go back to normal and keep playing the movie correctly. Other times after it does this, however, it will continue playing the movie, but with lagging video. When I say "lagging video", I mean that the video is slowed down, as if in slow motion. The audio remains normal. This only seems to happen in full screen mode (although I don't really watch movies any other way), so when it happens, I can generally hit escape to go back to regular viewing mode and it will fix itself, although sometimes I have to quit out of iTunes and reopen it.
2.) On rare occasions, instead of the video lagging problem, the picture will freeze all together, and if I recall correctly, the application always freezes with it.
3.) Less commonly than the video problem, the audio will become distorted. This usually occurs separately from the video issue, but can occur simultaneously as well. When this happens, the audio gets really scratchy and distorted, as if it was being filtered through a low quality children's boom box microphone. iek the video problem, this problem occurs randomly in the middle of watching the movie, but unlike the video problem, this problem persists after I quit out of iTunes. Quitting iTunes does not fix the problem in this case, unlike with the video lagging. When I quit iTunes, the distorted audio remains an issue an any application I use, and I have to wait awhile for it to go away on its own. So, unlike the video lagging, this audio issue seems to exist outside of iTunes, although it always starts with iTunes.
Can anyone help me figure out what is going on here? I've looked for patterns in other applications that are open during the times these problems occur, but haven't found any. I do have Norton AntiVirus installed on my computer, and I did notice awhile ago that any time I try to watch a movie on iTunes while I have a virus scan going on, I always get a glitch on iTunes, so I stopped running those two applications at the same time a long time ago, but I still have the problem. Should I try reinstalling iTunes? If I do this, will I lose any of the music or movies or apps that are in iTunes? I would assume not, but I just want to make sure I don't need to back anything up if I want to reinstall iTunes.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Not sure why this question is labeled as "answered" since there are no answers in the thread?
I'm having the same issue with the extremely distorted audio track on itunes video. It's worst on the speech, which is hard to hear, garbled, a lot of scratchy noise overtop of it; the music tracks are somewhat better (and much much louder). This started a bit ago and was intermittent at first, now very bad, can;t get rid of it.
I have a lot of itunes video, and since it is all protected, to my knowledge it is not playable through any other player... so this is a real problem. Reinstalling itunes (9.2.1) did not help. Sometimes VLC also distorts sound (on other video), more often that's fine but itunes is not.
I would love to have a solution to this-- my video library is not much use.

  • Video distortion when outputting to QT

I am running FCP 7.0.3 on a Macbook Pro. I am editing a sequence that is 1 hour and 48 minutes. The first image is text over a field of black, the second is a tif of a logo, and the third is video. When i try to Export a QT video using FILE / EXPORT / QUICKTIME MOVIE / 'Current Settings," when it gets to the video, there is a field of green, then some pixilated video distortion, then the video seems to flicker back and forth and go back a few frames like a stuck record. I notice that sometimes when I am playing the clip in my timeline, it tends to get a little bit "stuck" when it goes from the tif to the video. It seems to jump a few frames ahead, but there is no video distortion, that only shows up when i expert the entire video. I have also broken up the sequence in to shorter clips of about 15 minutes and the problem seems to go away. Any insight greatly appreciated.

When you converted the files in Clipwrap, what settings did you use?

Not that I am aware of*. H.264 is problematic in FCP7. You either convert the footage to an FCP edit friendly format prior to editing, or you end up in your situation and do so on the timeline.
    I am using a Sony HXR-NX5U camera shooting at 1080i at 30fps,
Do you mean 1080i at 29.97 fps?
    * If you still have the files that are 15 minute subsections of the full clip, use QuickTime 7 to copy and paste them together into  a complete file, and save that file. In QT7,  Open the all the subclips as separate QTs, then in the second movie, select the entire movie, copy it, and then go to the first movie and move the playhead to the end of the clip and the paste the copied 2nd movie into the first. Repeat as necessary. No guarantees.

  • I have a 2008 black macbook and access UK tv through a purchased proxy site. I want to buy a sony bravia internet connected tv to watch the channels in more comfort. Sony tell me this won't work - that the tv cannot capture my macbook content. Any advice?

I have a 2008 black MacBook and acess UK tv through a puchased proxy. I want to purchase a Sony Bravia internet connected tv and stream the site through a tv - Sony tell me this won't work - that a latest model tv cannot capture content and sites from a MacBook - is this true???? Surely there is a solution? Any help or advice welcome.

They are correct.  The only stream you can wireless connect the TV to a Mac is through an AppleTV, and that's purchased content on iTunes, and your own homemade content that is H.264 MPEG-4 that is 1800kbps.   Conversion of commercial video to that format is illegal, and hence how can not be stated on the forum.    Alternatively, as long as the TV is HDMI, you can wired connect it to your MacBook using the same advice here:

  • Black Macbook out to Sony Bravia Question

So I just bought a new Sony Bravia 22" LCD TV. I'm excited to use the TV as a monitor for my computer, or at least so that I can play back Hulu or other such videos on the TV. The TV supports VGA in as a "PC" input as well as 2 HDMI ports. I know I need to get an adapter for the mini DVI port on my Macbook, however I'm not sure whether to go the route of mini DVI to VGA or mini DVI to DVI with a DVI-HDMI cable to the computer. I know in both cases I will need a separate audio cable so that's not the issue. The TV says that it has a native 720p resolution. I think the highest VGA resolution supported by the TV is 1360x768, but the HDMI is higher I think. Thanks for your help

I also have a black macbook and I recently purchased a 42" Sony Bravia TV and I have a few questions...
    So I think I need 3 things:
    - the mini DVI to VGA cable
    - the VGA to VGA cable (that will connect to my TV right? how long of a cable is useful?)
    - another cable for the audio...
What do I need to get for the audio portion? Someone told me to get a 3.5mm AV RCA Cable with the red/white that connect to the ports on my TV and then the headphone jack on my laptop.
    Advice? Thanks!

  • What are the typical temerature ranges for the black Macbooks?

    Hello everyone,
Posting this as a one-year owner of one of the earlier black MacBooks (Macbook 2,1 - mid 2007 - 2GHz Core 2 Duo) just wondering what the typical temperature ranges are for at idle and under load for this line of machine?
I have modified the device slightly, putting a 120GB solid state drive, toping it out with 3GB of RAM and have Lion installed on it. I use it for a mixture of general web browsing and work (which does include running a Windows XP virtual machine in Fusion 4 although again, nothing heavier than testing websites in IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari) and have just become a bit aware of the temperatures.. At idle (nothing running at all) the system is at ~40C and under load about 70C-80C, with the fan running flat out to cool it down. Watching YouTube videos does also put it up at this temperature, but I understand that Flash and OSX do not play nicely. I have opened up the device and blown compressed air into and around the fan intakes to clean it out, and most (if not all) of the time it is on a flat surface with adequate ventalation.
I'm really wandering whether these temperatures are typical for this range of MacBook, as from experience a laptop of this spec should not be getting this hot.. Also a question for anyone that would be kind enough to take a stab - would it be worth me replacing the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU with some Arctiv Silver? I'd be comfortable doing that if it would benefit my heat issues. I've had a Google about this and the results are a mixed bag..
Thanks for anyone kind enough to take a look at this!

Okay well in lieu of any answers since I posted this (I am aware it was only a short while ago) but at the rate posts get buried on here, I wanted to post my own findings.
Various posts across the we show that the white series of these MacBooks operate at around 50C-55C at idle and under load reach up to 80C. Apple says that it should shutdown at ~90C - the highest I have ever seen my MacBook get is 87C, so temperature wise:
    Idle: 50-55C
    Under load: 70C-80C
    Thermal Shutdown: 90C
With the fans being noisy when under load, apparently there are two main "families" of the black MacBook. The earlier models (of which my one is) run at the above temperatures with a fan speed of ~6800RPM being fully open and ~1200RPM being idle. The Santa Rosa MacBooks however being a later model have a much more efficient - albeit more noisy - fan module. I daresay the Santa Rosa black MacBooks are more common being the newer model.
So my findings - my temperatures of reaching 70C-80C are normal for the work I do. The fan speed being up to 6800RPM is fine - and the noise is just a trait of this line of MacBook sadly.

  • Black MacBook hard drive and RAM upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my black MacBook- 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
I would like to increase the RAM - (currently have 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM) and would like to put in a new hard drive -( currently have 150 GB) I am wondering what hardware to get.
I think I would like to increase the RAM to 4GB and the HD to 500 GB. anyone have strong opinions on increased memory and/or hard drive? There seems to be enough info out there on the actual upgrade process, but am not sure what to actually buy for this upgrade.

  • An affair with a black MacBook...

Got my 2nd MacBook earlier today and having used it for the last 7 hours, here's some of my thoughts about it...
I checked it out at the store for a few minutes, never really spent much time as I was set on the white MacBook but when I took it out of the gray cloth-like covering I quickly changed my mind, the black finish was really nice!
Fit and finish was the same as my white MacBook which is great, no complaints whatsoever. Screen checks out fine, no dead or stuck pixel that I can see.
I run /dev/null for about 25 minutes to see what temp it will go up to and it's nice to report that CoreDuoTemp shows that the temp went all the way up to 84 and the fan blasted full speed which brought down the temp to 77 then hovered at 80-81.
I listened carefully to the "moo" sound from 66-70 degrees (tried it like 5 times) and no "moo" whatsoever.
No whine either and the temp is basically same as my white MacBook. Idle's at around 48-50 degrees, with the Antec Laptop Cooler, it even goes further down 4-5 degrees.
Now, the only thing I have done so far is WIPE the system and re-installed the OS from scratch (don't ask, it's just how I am). If anyone who are having "moo" and "whining" issue would like to voluteer to see if they re-install the OS from scratch if it makes any difference? Same with the heat issue too.
I love everything about the black MacBook as with my white one but the black one is just sexy!!! though the love affair started fading away towards the end of the night as I quickly noticed finger prints all over where as my white one doesn't show any at all and I haven't even wiped it down since purchasing it Tuesday last week from the Apple store.

ps. I setup another Ichat account so I can test video conference with my self with both laptops... that was more fun than Photobooth!!!

Oily prints showing up on the trackpad.. yipes!
    Macbook 2.0 ghz with 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   PowerEdge Server, IBM T43 Laptop/Dell 2405FP

When the MacBooks first came out I immediately went to my Apple Store to check em' out. They only had a white one on display and I thought that was awesome! After playing with it a bit, I knew I had to have one but waited.
Today...I had a chance to go back and they had a BLACK MACBOOK next to the white one. So I messed around on the black one awhile and even asked an Apple Rep to pop in a DVD MOVIE.
WELL.....I started pulling my hair out trying to decide because...against all odds...I really got attached to the black MacBook but I also remember reading this thread before I went and realized I really wanted both. But like others, I can't afford 2 of them.
Meanwhile....as I played around a gentleman checking out the white one next to me had no idea how OSX worked and I helped him out showing him things. A few minutes later he told...."Well I don't need one but I want one."
Next thing I know he tells the Rep to get him a WHITE MACBOOK! I will be buying one next week but I've decided that I DO like the BLACK MATTE MACBOOK!
The smudges and fingerprints were not near as bad as many people claim them to be. I'M SO GLAD I HAVE AN APPLE STORE NEARBY!

  • Black Macbook-2.4ghz HD errors

Hi, i have the last black macbook they made before going to the aluminum body (250gb hd, and x3100 video).
Recently when trying to import an MP3 CD i got an error that said
attempting to copy to the disk macintosh hd failed could not be read from or written to
I got this error every time the cd tried to import the 20th track. Normally i would just write it off, but i only have a month left on my warranty and i want to be sure this isn't something i should send it in for before it's too late.
I ran disk utility check permissions, repair permissions and verify disk. I saw nothing strange in any of those logs, only bad permissions for firefox plugins.
Can i do anything to check the health of my drive? Should i contact Apple about this, or maybe send it in?
    thanks,
    Travis

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

You probably should repost this question in the MacBook (White/Black) forums here:

You have found your way in the forums for G4 minitowers as in the image by my name at the left. They use a very different video-out system.

  • Black Macbook, Solidworks, GMA X3100 ?

Ok, for the first time I am regretting buying this black macbook! I am looking to run solidworks 09 on my Macbook using bootcamp an XP pro, but I am having trouble getting a clear answer on whether or not solidworks 09 will run adequately with the GMA X3100 video card. Solidworks says it is not supported, but I would like to know if anybody has actually tried it, and if so, the results?
    Thank you
    Jim

What do you mean by "can't handle it"? What happens?
How much RAM is in your machine? Are any processes consuming a high amount of CPU when you do these things? You can open up Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) to check this. Make sure "All Processes" are being shown (the option is in the upper-right corner) and sort by %CPU. Are any processes consuming high double digit CPU?

  • Can I get Snow Leopard to run in 64-bit mode? (Black MacBook - Early 2008)

I have a Black Macbook (macbook4,1) with the latest firmare and OSX 10.6.4
I've tried holding "6" and "4" on bootup, and I can't get SL into true 64-bit mode. (System Software Overview: 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: No)
If I look at the Extensions, most say "Yes" to 64-bit (Intel), however, the following are still 32-bit:
    AppleIntelGMAX3100
    AppleIntelGMAX3100FB
    BSDKernel6.0
    IOKit6.0
    Libkern6.0
    Mach6.0
    System6.0
Does that basically mean that my video card is limiting my ability to run pure 64-bit? If so, does anyone know if this is something that is planned to be fixed in a future release?
    Thanks!
    Mark

Does that basically mean that my video card is limiting my ability to run pure 64-bit? If so, does anyone know if this is something that is planned to be fixed in a future release?
Yes. No. All 64-bit software runs in 64-bit. You simply cannot use the 64-bit kernel unless Apple provides a 64-bit video driver which may not even be possible for the GPU in your computer.
What makes you think you even have a need for the 64-bit kernel?

  • Aperture with Black Macbook

I'm using the Aperture trial with a new black Macbook, 2 gb RAM, OS 10.4.9. I've reviewed other posts re using Aperture with a Macbook, and have seen mixed results.
I really like this app and want to purchase it, but certain simple operations that should be smooth are choppy. Eg., when the import screen opens after inserting a card into the card reader, or simply opening or closing stacks, it is slow and choppy.
Is this everyone's experience using a Macbook with 2gb RAM? Am I missing something that could help (other than future improvements, possibly leopard, etc). I am using it with an Apple 20" cinema display. Thanks...

Thanks... I'm really torn here. I absolutely want to buy aperture, but it is painfully slow at times. I checked it out at the local apple store today, and on both an imac and macbook pro it worked fine. But on the Macbook, it's frequently slow and not smooth.
I think at least some of this would be easy to fix. For example, that import screen that opens in an animated fashion looks great- IF the hardware is sufficient. On the macbook it just goes way too slow. There should be at least an option to disable those "candy" graphics that require the better video card.
I just downloaded Lightroom to look at. Frankly, I wasn't even going to, as I know aperture will integrate well with what I do. Perhaps Apple will improve those speed issues for those of us who are "serious amateurs" and use the macbook with its limited graphic capability....

  • 1280x720 Screen Video Distorted

    Dear readers,
    I have the following problem:
    1. I recorded a screen video with an inexpensive software at work and want to edit it in FCE HD. The resolution is 1280 x 720
    2. The files created are avi files and I use skysoft converter to convert them to 1280 x 720 .mov files.
    3. I import them to FCE HD and when looking at the inspector, I see that the resolution is 1280 x 720.
    4. When I drag them into a new sequence (720p as project setting and sequence setting) I get a letterboxed view in the canvas, leaving left and right with black stripes. I can only correct this by distort the image and set aspect ratio to -38 and then scale the video again.
Why is the video distorted, although the aspect ratio seems to be the same? What am I doing wrong? I want to create the video for youtube and viewing on the computer.
Any help appreciated! Thanks a lot.

Sorry for the bad question! I found that the screen resolution of the monitor where the files were recorded initially was set to 1280 x 1024...
